The #1 Mistake Young Basketball Players Make

  • In this video I want to talk about a mistake I see being made by young players as they go about their basketball journey. It is a mistake I often made, and one that can be solved with a simple shift in mindset.
    Last summer, I spoke to the current basketball team at my high school. I started out my incredible speech with a simple question. How many of you want to play college basketball? I expected this to get the players interested. That they would all raise their hand and get to learn what it takes from a successful college basketball player.
    But now I think that was the wrong question. If I could have a do over, I would have changed my question just slightly. I would have asked them, how many of you love playing basketball?

    This is something my coach has been telling our team for ages, but i think now i understand more about what it means to put in the effort.
    Personally, i dont care whether i make the nba and win 4 mvps, or if i play with my mates in a local rec league. I might actually prefer playing with my mates, because i will probably enjoy it more.

    Im grateful that i came across this video. And i thankful for u giving us hoopers this advice. I was always thinking of the end goal (which was making the NBA) and i used to think that if I didn’t i would be seen as a failure. Now after recovering from my injury and seeing this vid I realize i took basketball for granted. So i just enjoy the process and the game of basketball with everything from the heart ❤🏀

    Tucker, as a younger player who isn't as good as his peers, I often find it hard to speak or have the loudest voice because I feel like my say is not valid. What can I do to combat this way of thinking? Not only does it effect me on the court, but it effects me off the court as well

    • @TuckerRichardson
      @TuckerRichardson  9 месяцев назад +2

      As far as on the court, I don't think you have to be the best player on your team to have the loudest voice or for others to believe in what you are saying. A lot of teams have emotional leaders who aren't the star player. And off the court, a lot of that is probably a lack of confidence in what you have to say. This is a really hard thing to fix, but I think one solution would be to think deeply about the people you surround yourself with. If you surround yourself with like minded people who care about you, they will listen to what you have to say.

    • @TuckerRichardson

      I guess for me, it isn't about focusing on the bad plays OR the great plays, it is about living in the moment and focusing on the next play. That is something I have gotten so much better at over the years. Now I try to worry less on how many shots I have made or miss, and just worry about staying consistent with how I attack each play throughout a game. Hope this helps!
