Lake Superior agate hunting at Whitefish Point...amidst snow and ice...the only soul on the beach!

  • Created by InShot:inshotapp.page.link/YTShare. Today we traveled from Sault Sainte Marie enroute to scenic Whitefish Point. We left at 6:30 am in the snow. The plow trucks were still sleeping on this Sunday morning. The highway was covered in fresh snow. It was a peaceful and beautiful drive in. At the beach the south winds did not smooth out the waves from the previous north winds...they were coming in strong. The winds also gobbled up the stones. Very few rocks presented themselves. However the beauty of the snow and ice covered beach made up for the lack of rocks and agates. I would guess not many agate hunters would venture out on such a day! At least not the prevalent summer hunters. I was battling a cold that struck on Thanksgiving. Yet it didn't slow me down too much. Not a single agate gem was found. But we were still glad to be on the beach! Thank you for coming out in the cold and snow with us!

Here in Australia we are coming into our summer. Thank you for taking us along on another adventure. Don't feel pressured to get to the beach when you're unwell and without a vehicle. Maybe there is a museum nearby or even carpark gravel hunting. I've heard that landscape rocks often have agates in them. In the meantime, take care of your health and your family. Say hi from me to your kids. 👋☀️

Hi Rachelle, thank you for watching! Unfortunately we dont have agates in our gravel parking lots or gravel roads or in our landscape rock...unless we import it in from Wisconsin or Minnesota. My son did find one small nice agate in a parking lot...but it was a fluke. We went back and hunted days and days and hours and hours without ever finding another! But I did find a vehicle but not 4 x 4. But for now it will have to work. My wife wants to trade me for her minivan. And I might...her minivan has higher clearance than the car I'm getting. My wife likes my car because it has heated and cooled leather seats...as well as every other option under the sun! 🌞😎

Great footage, thanks for sharing and also, thanks for not drowning out the beautiful wave sounds by including obnoxious background music like so many others on RUclips do. I love Little Girls Point, the road has improved there now, and easier to get there in winter. I always look for agates but am not very good at recognizing them, although I do have a good collection of bird-egg rocks. Happy hunting!

Thank you for watching! It's funny you mentioned the not putting in background music...because I was actually thinking that for this non agate finding trip a little music might make a better video....lm glad I didn't...LOL😀. By the way...where is little girls point?

Whitefish Point is a beautiful and historic rockhounding site...but for agates in general I can't wait to get back to Vermilion! Thank you for watching!

@@upperpeninsulabeautifulI had a similar experience at the Oregon coast this past weekend. No agates, only fossils. But, that’s what makes the hunts fun…you never know when you’re going to hit and what you’ll find :)

I just love Lake Superior! I could watch her all day. Beautiful ice art! I can see what you are talking about with the water moving in over the point in the first video I watched.
I know they say there are no tides in the lakes, but clearly, the water moves differently in Lake Superior to a certain degree

Seeing that still blows my mind...I've hunted that point for over 40 years...still can't believe it! Hoping to hike to Vermilion in a few days...I have much better agate hunting success there! Are you from the area?

Thank you so much for finding us and subscribing! The Lord works in mysterious ways! I wasn't even going to air this video since there were no rocks and no agates! But since I haven't released a video in some time...I went ahead and released it regardless. I'm so glad I did and so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the encouragement!

What a beautiful day out there with all the icy, that's cool! Winter is definitely here, have a couple inches down here and still slowly going. Your a smart man to follow the waves and wind direction for rock movement, that's interesting! I love the lake view there, sure is pretty and peaceful with the sound of waves, cool place and a great experience. I hope we get some more time to go rockhounding before the season over!

Thank you City! We just got several inches with cold temps predicted. I don't see a lot more trips this year...but I am praying for a near future warm up! As much as I study the winds and usually do pretty good... yesterday was mother nature proving she is in control and doesn't follow our predictions!

Thank you Cindy! I couldn't believe how big the waves were after the South West winds. But you get what you get! The weather doesn't always do what's expected! Did you by chance watch the last video before this one? Just curious 😉

I'm hoping to talk my wife into one of my rock trips up there before too much snow comes down. Looks like it might not be too bad this year using WeatherBug. I haven't dealt with that kind of cold in years though, may have to wait. Love the videos, keep dry and warm.

Hi Dan! 😊 I really enjoy your videos and love all the stories, information and experience you have. I do feel compelled to share with you something the Whitefish Federal Ranger informed me about concerning the Federal Bird Observatory, which is adjacent to the Lighthouse property. He said that people are not allowed to remove anything from any federal properties anywhere in the country. Places like: Pictured rocks, Isle Royal (the entire island), Sleeping Bear, and such places. It's a federal offense to remove agates, rocks, berries, pine cones, or anything, and possibly subject to steep fines, and/or jail, confiscation of anything in your possession, including your car, boat, pets, campers, anything you have with you. It's not fun getting anything back from them. They did approach Erik, (the guy who popularized yooperlites- as told by the ranger) and they stopped him before he removed anything and gave him a stern warning. The federal nature reserve border starts a couple hundred yards east of the viewing deck and continues a good quarter mile past the point. I only tell you this with the kindest of considerations and respect to you, your viewers and subscribers. I wish only the best for everyone. Good Tiding And Peace Be With You, ~Thurston~

Hey, thank you so much for letting me know about that. I knew it was prohibited to remove driftwood...but not all the other things like the berries and such. I will make sure not to remove a thing. I really appreciate your wisdom in this matter and your forthcomingness. I wish to abide by all laws. Glad I already started leaving the agates behind. 😀. I'm always looking for ways to improve my recently started channel. And with constructive criticism from viewers like yourself I aim to do better. Thank you so much for watching!

@@upperpeninsulabeautiful Hi Dan! 🙂 I know most people will refer to public domain as being from the water/surf and up to the high tide water mark, but I recommend you ask any available ranger or park staff and they will gladly let you know what is/isn't permissible. There's a big difference between state and 'national' shorelines. There are also differences from site to site. I do know the law allows a total mineral/rock removal of only 25lbs per person, per year, any allowable location. Thank you for your nice reply. ~Thurston~

The waves have me baffled too. I looked at the wind history and it showed a S/SW wind 25th and 26th. Winds looked like they were out of the South and averaged 8-10mph the day you went. Very bizarre. For winter videos, I would be interested in videos of popular/unique places (museums, businesses, trails, events) or things to do in Sault Ste Marie, MI assuming that is where you live. Just across the border is amazing too; for example, lots of great winter trails with interesting topography. I bet there are some cool places to check out that are uniquely Canadian and could share some history on area. I heard the source of the Puddingstone is Canada near this area and a lot have been found on St. Joseph island. Nobody has covered this on RUclips. Subscribers also probably don't know much about the Soo area in general.

Hey Jim...you were right about the weather! That's exactly the information I had. And thank you for the suggestions...that sounds like some great material for the winter season...you've given me some great ideas for sure! Thank you for watching and also for the helpful comments! And yes...I'm in the Sault! I should show the locks before the shipping season ends! You're awesome!😎
