  • Hi garden friends! July is a bit of a struggle in the garden for me here in Florida zone 10a. It’s very hot and humid and the perfect environment for pest and disease. 🥵🦟🐜🐌 I try my hardest not to spray and only use organic products so July and August are usually the worst months, everything is on survival mode.
    This is also a good time to see what plants thrive in the heat and I appreciate those so much! Some that love the heat are Thryallis, Crepe Myrtle, Celosia, and Black Eyed Susans to name a few.

    The crepe myrtle is pretty, I like the dark foliage. All the bugs are here because it didn't freeze last winter. I have had so much trouble this year but I also moved and my plants didn't like that.

      Thank you! That’s right, I hadn’t thought about that but it makes sense. Now that we’re a zone warmer I wonder if this will be the norm. 😫

    Hello! I love watching your garden tour videos. I'm in Chrystal River on Nature's Coast in zone 9a. I want to try my hand at putting in a small cut flower garden just for fun. Would you suggest direct sowing in a prepared bed at the end of August or perhaps prepare seeds indoors now and then replant outdoors? My first frost date is December 15th so I think I could get a pretty decent show but I am new to flower gardening and trying to learn all the things. Haha! Thank you!

      Hi, thank you! I think either way is fine. I personally prefer direct sowing if possible especially with zinnias and sunflowers.
      I do start pre sprouting my ranunculus in October, keep them inside and plant them in December.

    Hi there! First, I wanted to say that I’m learning a lot by watching your videos. Thank you so much!
    QQ: When do you trim back your Blue Salvias? And do you recommend any specific variety? I’m planning to get some of them soon.

    • @FloridaCottageGarden
      @FloridaCottageGarden  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you so much! My favorite salvia is Mystic Spires and Fashion Cherry. Mystic Spires takes well to a hard pruning, I don’t have a set schedule. I go by how the plant is doing. Sometimes when it’s really big and we have bad storms it tends to split down the middle so I prune it back, I also do it early Fall (September) because it has a lot of disease from the heat and rain. Fashion Cherry on the other hand I barely prune. I usually just trim it up a bit when it takes over my walkway but other than that I usually let it be. Hope this helps. You’re going to love adding salvias to your garden and the pollinators will appreciate them as well. Mine get visited daily by butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.

    Which agastache are you growing? I have been looking for one that can make it, and none have worked...I've tried full sun, part sun.....shade, wet spots, dry spots, damp spots....they all die within 3 weeks

    • @FloridaCottageGarden
      @FloridaCottageGarden  2 месяца назад

      It’s Meant to Bee Queen Nectarine by Proven Winners. It’s an Agastache hybrid, full sun until about 2pm. The spot you put it in needs to drain well.

    • @rootelation486
      @rootelation486 2 месяца назад

      @FloridaCottageGarden haven't tried that one, it's on my list now. I only have one spot that doesn't drain, but I do have a few that don't go bone dry in 20 minutes. Thanks for the suggestion

      Oh no, really? I answered your comment about Lady of Shalott in the video too. 😕 I tried to reply twice to your comment on my short about how your LOS barely blooms but for some reason it wouldn’t post. I was letting you know that mine for the 1st 3 years barely bloomed, it’s only until this year that it has started blooming more. A viewer also suggested to wrap the canes around an obelisk and I did, I think it will encourage lateral growth therefore more blooms.
