Hi Garden friends, Happy October!🍁🧡🍂 Can you count how many times I said "stunning" in this video? That's how excited I am about these plants I grew this season. These four annual flowers that were total standouts in my garden. They were super easy to grow from seed, and just one seed packet produced tons of plants, making them really affordable. Having these flowers in large drifts made a huge impact in the garden. My top picks are Zahara Double Raspberry Ripple Zinnias, Blue Horizon Ageratum, Atomic Purple Gomphrena, and Sahara Rudbeckia-they're must-haves for me every year. Do you have a favorite flower you love growing in your garden? Let me know in the comments! I started the zinnias indoor under growlights about 6 weeks before I planted them out. There weren't many seeds in the package, so I wanted to have more control over the germination, which is why I opted to grow under the grow lights.
Hi there, I have started gomphrena several ways. Direct sowing, winter sowing, and under grow lights. If you direct sow, it has to be once it warms up (after any chance of frost has passed in spring), and the seeds should be soaked for 24 hrs prior to sowing. Same with indoor starting under grow lights (soak seeds 24 hrs before sowing) this helps with germination by breaking down the chafe/outter shell. If you use the winter sowing method, you di not have to pre soak seeds as there will be moisture in your containers that will help with the germination.
Hi Steph.. I grew Celosia this year for the first time and it's a winner for me. I also ordered Double Zahara Raspberry Ripple based on your last video. I look forward to planting those Zinnias next year. Thanks for all you do for us viewers ❤️
I planted the gomphrena on my walkway too. I just pulled them out for some fall planting and wow, what a job. I felt like I was pulling out shrubs. It's amazing that from one small seed, you get these huge plants! Love everything you do! Going out to make a bouquet because you inspired me to do it! :)
Hi Filomena, The first year I pulled out half of them then realized it was much easier to just cut them at ground level. They will decompose, and its much easier and better than leaving a hole in the soil. Thank you so much for your kind words, enjoy your bouquet. I will sure miss our beautiful flowers over the next several months 💚
I discovered lantana and gaillardia this year and they are must haves now - My lantana was a vibrant red/orange/yellow that grew into a massive mound of nonstop color with zero attention. The gaillardia was much the same.
I absolutely love your content! I grew gomphrena this year on your recommendation and it truly is an abundant addition to my garden. Thank you so much.
My favourite flower I grew from seed this year were White Swan Marigolds. They were the perfect pale yellow. I got my seed from Johnny’s seeds. You gave me great ideas on some flowers to try next year.
My go to flower that works with rabbits, deer and squirrels are wax begonias. They never fail me. I've never grown zinnia's before and I really like the size and look of the raspberry ones you have planted. I feel they would complement them as well.
Hi Steph 🌺. What a beauty . The flowers bouquet is very beautiful and I love these flowers also I love to grow from seeds snapdragons, blue lobelia , basilic , blue salvia four o'clock flower ,vinca ,ballon flower, columbine ,and more plants and from plant cuttings like dianthus, geraniums ,dahlias roses, hibiscus ,and other plants .... Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺
I grew the Atomic Purple gomphrena because of you and they are beautiful. The aren't as full as yours and the foliage is yellower.I also grew the Buddy Purple variety and they are much smaller but with prolific blooms like the Atomic Purple
A gorgeous garden and so much information about how to grow plants from seeds. Will definitely try next season. Thank you and I look forward to your future shows.
Great plant recommendations! I especially like the color and height of the zinnias, the placement of the gomphrena - it looks to be hiding iris and peony foliage-, and the Sahara colors are giving me something to think about. I'm working on my front yard flowers. I must design around my very large collection of peonies. I have many irises too. Basically, I have flowers for a spring garden, but am still making flower beds and deciding flowers to accent these for summer and fall. The house even came with a crazy amount of forsythia that I'm keeping as a privacy hedge, and a saucer magnolia. I have full sun and don't want to water. I also don't want anything crowding the peonies and irises.
Your garden is so lovely, I made notes but couldn’t catch the name of the zinnia? Plus so glad you mentioned the seed companies where you purchased the seeds. Have you or plan to do a video on your favorite plants to grow in pots/containers?
I grew gomphrena from seed this year because of your video about them. They did so well and I dried them all and made them into dried flower arrangements as decor. Side note, my cat LOVED eating them (dried!) so I can't keep them on the dining room table. Had to put them up high where she can't reach. 😂 I've collected marigold, echinachea and the gomphrena seeds for winter sowing.
Lovely and thank you for the names of the websites that you purchased the seeds. This was my first year planting seeds I just put on ground put little dirt and watered daily. I lurched from the BRECKS, Baker Seed( something like that) and Logees I tell you everything is still blooming! The giant Zumba oh my! The hellatrop things red yellow orange oh my! I’m just so over the moon! I’m so excited I’m still searching to add to my seed stores. I’ve got tons of packages ready for winter sow because of course now I think I’m a real gardener!! Thank you to you and your husband when you are vacationing keeping my eye on the price!
I will definitely get the Zahara Zinnia seeds. They’re gorgeous and I love that they’re low maintenance. My two must haves every year are Angelinas, the Archangel variety and verbena bonariensis.
Gorgeous bouquet from your garden, Steph! Sensation Cosmos is a mainstay in my garden. It's been reseeding itself for decades! Angelonia, Russian Sage, Salvia, see-through Verbena, and Morning Glory vine are also my favorites.
I love your garden, and zinnia's are stunning. You are amazing. Thank you for sharing. GOD Bless You. What websites are you buying your flower seeds from?
I did grow the gomphrena this year and it is beautiful and still looks as fresh today as it did when it first started to bloom! The Sahara rudbeckia- on my list. I’ve admired them all summer in your videos! Thank you Steph! 😊♥️
Such a beautiful Bouquet. I’ve actually never started anything from seed but after watching your garden tours this summer I’m definitely going to give it a try.
What great choices, Steph! I’m unbelievably disappointed with my gomphrena. This was the first year I tried to grow them, and although I did soak them for a day before I direct seated them, not a single one came up. 🙁 i’m hoping to next year start them inside, hoping that will make a difference. I absolutely adore the color of your zinnias! All these flowers are gorgeous and I love the arrangements that you are able to make.
I grew gomphrena after seeing one of your videos and I LOVE it! And I think I’ll try those ageratums you grew. A must have for me would be the Pink Magellan Zinnias which are another dwarf variety although it gets about a foot taller than the raspberry ripple. But it’s full and definitely great for the landscape. Thanks for your inspiration!!❤
Your garden is looking lovely, and that bouquet is amazing! A must-have annual for my garden is coleus. There are so many interesting varieties and they can add colour to shady areas.
Those are great seed choices for full sun. I also grow your first three recommendations-will have to try the Rudbeckia. One of my favorites for shade (full, but bright shade), is Blue Lady Browallia. Similar flower color and size as Plumbago, but blooms all summer into fall. It's beautiful!
I too have found the ageratum variety your recommended to be a must have in my garden beds. I have even had them self seed which is always such a joy! I have had trouble in past years when I have attempted to grow rudebekia. Each one has developed powdery mildew, some almost immediately after setting in the ground and some succumbed as the season progressed. Did you have any issues with the Sahara variety? Thank you for this video. I appreciate you mentioning where you purchase your seed.
@@HookedandRooted I had the same question. Such a beautiful creamy white. It almost looks like a rose , but I love that’s it’s not! Thank you for answering.
Great choices. As far as landscaping zinnias go, my go to are Profusion Double Deep Salmon, perform exactly like Raspberry Ripple. My other top choices for annuals are Nicotiana 'Perfume Bright Rose', Marigold 'Coco Gold' and ALL of the feathery varieties of Celosia.
Great video!! Do you direct sow the seeds for all the flowers mentioned? When do you do it? How do you prepare the soil beforehand? Can you do videos next year when you do it?
Beautiful flowers. I had started the zinnias from seeds. I love them. The flowers that you showed us, did you start them indoors and move them outside? Or did you differently put them in the ground? Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden. 💖💚🤍👏🏼
Thanks for sharing such useful information! I’ll try applying this method to my chili plants at home. Once the plant survives the winter, do I need to add more fertilizer?"
You are so welcome! The annuals I showed in this video, aren't likely to survive the winter. However, if you do have some that do, yes, once they begin to grow again next season, you can apply an all purpose granular fertilizer.
Great video with really helpful information about the plants. I've only been flower gardening for a year and I'm hooked! Zinnias were my favorites this year - I had a colorful mix that got 4 feet tall with multiple shades of pink, yellow, orange, and white, and I had Lilliput Salmon (from Eden Bros.) that stayed more compact but still had long enough stems for cut flowers. I loved how the salmon helped "bring together" the different colors for me in an arrangement. I hope to plant all four of your favorites you listed here - Sahara Rudbecki and Atomic Purple Gomphrena were already on my list to grow. Did you start your seeds inside, winter sow them in containers outside, or plant them right in the ground? Thank you!!
Hi Steff, Your flowers are beautiful! The last flower the large salmon Rose Zinnia did you grow that from seed? if you did where did it come from? Or was it purchased locally? I absolutely love it!
Hi Steph! I grew Zahara Double Raspberry Zinnias this year because of your recommendation last year! They have been stunning all summer!! Such a good recommendation! Question: did you try collecting any seeds last year? I’m curious if I’ll get the same flowers next year if I save my seeds for next year. Thank you! 💕
Hi Mal! I'm so glad your enjoying the zinnias. I didn't try collecting the seeds because I had them growing with other flowers and its possible that they wouldn't be true to the variety due to cross pollination. They were all on their own this year, so I will collect a few to try next season, but will also buy another pack of seeds "just in case" until I can confirm my test by growing from my seeds 😉
@@HookedandRooted awesome! I will try the same! And also order more from a seed seller. You always have the best seed recommendations. I can’t wait to order more of your recommendations for next season!
Are you finding your ageratum self seeds HUNDREDS of plants? I have to hoe around mine all the time to prevent it from spreading so much. Not sure if its just my variety,
Hi Lisa, the blue horizon variety that i grew for the last couple of years has not self seeded. I wish it had. I've had to restart seeds each year. You might be correct in that it's the variety.
Beautiful. I tried the purple buddie from bakers creeks bcs I needed something for a small space, and it was gorgeous bloomed all season and is still going strong. By the way what is the red and yellow Dahlia?
Thank you so much! my friend grew the buddy purple its adorable and great for the front of a border or container. The yellow and deep pink dahlia is called "Gitz Crazy". Its really cool.
I’m putting the raspberry ripple on my list for next season. So pretty. I’m tried my hand at dahlias from seed this year and am loving the show they put on. Also love your sweater, where is it from?
This variety did not get powdery mildew. I have grown other zinnias in the past that did. The benary's giant is also great and seems to be more mildew resistant as well.
I’m curious you say you grew these from the seed did you direct so into the ground outside? And if so, what time of year (what part of May). I’m in zone 5b/6a. Thanks!
How tall do the gomphrena grow? I have a 2 ft wide by 6 ft long raised bed up against a fence. So I have to put taller plants in the back and shorter in the front. I was thinking of growing taller zinnias (30-40 inches) in the back along with the Ageratum since they seem to get tall. Will gomphrena in the front of them work? Or do they get similar height. My worry is the plants in the front blocking light from plants in the back, especially since the sun doesn’t come fully overhead on these raised beds in my garden.
Hi Maureen, You can collect seeds but its not a guarantee it will look exactly like the plant you collected the seeds from. Because they are planted out in the open its possible that they could get cross pollinated with other zinnias in my garden, and then I wont end up with the true variety of these short stature zinnias. So for these, I wouldn't want to risk it by growing a seed that would end up with a taller zinnia etc. However, my gomphrena for example, I was able to grow some from seeds I collected and they turned out the same.
Steph, on your zinnias, is each clump in front of your wall one plant or are there multiples? How far apart did you plant them? They look like a nice, bushing variety. I want to grow them next year! 😍

Hello, the atomic purple gomphrena variety i show here is about 12-18" in height. They are a good front of the border option.
Can you save the seeds of the Zahara Zinnia and get the same the next year.
I planted these this summer. I started them from seed and that is about 3 plants planted together.
Steph do you plant these inside first or do you sow directly in garden?
I have no luck with gomphrena
