So gorgeous. The blue you added at the end took the painting to another level of depth. I just love the Grand Canyon. I'll have to get out my photos from my many visits there and see what I can try to paint. Thanks for sharing, Steve!
Enjoyed this one Steve. You are spot on about taking advantage of an opportunity to plein air. Something I fail to do many times, but this is a great reminder to take time even if it's just for a short time. Many great tips in this one and some I want to try. As always, enjoy your videos. Thanks Steve!
Beautiful work as always! I also loved seeing how you clipped your portable painter to the Seamount easel! I’ve been trying to figure out how to use those two together and hadn’t thought of your simple solution!
Good tip with the glazing over gouache. Thanks. My last plein air session had another plein air artist friend set up right in front of me (and I was comfortable), so I painted her. It was a fun change to a landscape.
I have been learning water color for years now, and hope to one day paint in a more humid area, such as your neck of the woods. You are painting this in my neck of the woods, which is actually the southwestern red rocks and canyons😊 I want to see if there is a noticeable difference with different humidity. I suspect my paper is much drier here, like almost dehydrated, if that makes sense. I hope you and your family had a great visit, thanks for all you do!
In the west my husband would say that a dry/low humidity 95 is a great day. He is just one of those people it doesn’t faze him. But coming from the east it must have been a shock. it’s great you found a spot and used your great set up and painted there. Thanks for covering layering and adjusting to give your painting life.
Actually 95 is pretty common in South Carolina summers. The dryness did seem to help some but 95 in Arizona was still hot. The shock came with the 113 degree heat of Phoenix! YIKES!
@@mindofwatercolorWhen my nephew lived in Phoenix, for his summer runs he would first go along his route and tuck water bottles in safe places. He said without it there would be no way to make it. Oh, another requirement was a cell phone. You don’t leave home without it.
Thank you! I’ve been using gouache with my watercolor paintings, but I have not tried glazing over the gouache. I’m looking forward to trying it! Best of wishes!
I'm encouraged to finish a watercolor plein air i started last September. I'll finish in gouache after watching your demo. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Thanks for this awesome demo lesson! I am learning gouache and have been using Grand Canyon for studies. It’s like trying to simplify an optical illusion to paint that place!
Your expertise and years of painting really shows here. Rocks, for me are harder to paint then most stuff. I have not used my gouache in years. Maybe it’s time to pull them out.
Wonderful painting Steve. One day I would love to go to America and see the National Parks in your country. I just got your course Mastering Watercolour Landscapes with etchr, I'm booked to do The Overland Track in Tasmania so planning to use the knowledge I learn from you and do some en plein air along the way. I have to go real small as everything will be on my back as I hike so bought a small accordion sketchbook, just have to get a small palette. I'll never do the area justice, but it will be a nice keepsake of my time.
Hi, Steve! This, and your original plein air session make fascinating viewing! I had to check 100F and 90F in Celsius, and truly admire / envy your ability to paint without shade. The little ethnic house, bottom mid-left, and the church, across on the right (on a level with the 'chimney' of the little house ( 9:06 and on from there) are brilliant examples of how our human minds subconsciously translate what we see as a jumble of abstract shapes into recognisable forms. (eg your description of the pyramid). Many thanks for sharing your Grand Canyon experience with us, and the text at the end, which is so important, and hit a chord with me, as they so often do. 😊
@@mindofwatercolor Sometimes it’s okay to just enjoy what life gives you. Kinda what you were eluding to. It all came out great and you got to spend some awesome time with Mrs. Mitchell. ❤️😊
Hullo Steve, I have grand memories of my trips to The Grand Canyon! I still have relatives there. I do not have very many pictures from those trips, I do have a couple of sketches I did when I visited the rim with my Aunt!! I am wondering if you have any plans for larger paintings working from some of your sketchbook works? While these are very nice pieces I would like to see some larger painting from your works that you did in your sketchbooks. I have always used sketchbooks as places to hone my ideas for my projects, working out those pesky problems before I tried them out on a larger canvas or paper! Will you share some of these paintings with us? Larger paintings? Well this was a very nice video, thanks.
I too use sketchbooks for problem solving but have come to really enjoy them as an art form in and of itself, a growing art trend. I don't display in galleries or sell prints often so it makes sense. I will do the occasional larger work from a study. The last video I did (about limited palettes) was just such a painting. Not very large in size but a finish painting taken from a sketchbook study.
I'm so glad you showed us the complete process! It turned out to be a stunning peice of art! 😮❤
Nice colors in this painting.
So beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Captivating and unique - love it!

I just love watching you paint, just when i think it can't get any better, it does 😊 thank you Steve. God Bless
Wonderful scenery and your painting captures the feeling perfectly 💙
This is wonderful!!! What a beautifully effective use of gauche! Using the transparent watercolor washes in this way is brilliant! Thank you!!
I absolutely love your T-shirt selections Steve. Keep em coming!

Yeah I fussed with it for a while before finally coming up with this simple solution. Works great.
Thanks Steve for all the gouache techniques , I’m just at a place in a painting where I can use your advice 👍
Gorgeous!! We have been to the Grand Canyon a couple of times and it is so difficult for me to paint, but I keep practicing!
Woww!!!so,soo great!!👍fantastic!!👍🍀🙏🤗🇨🇭

Do you have a review of Mijello Mission Gouache? Thanks
No, sorry
Did you have a photo to reference at home?
