    Post Office Lawyer and Head of Legal Rodric Williams brands Nick Wallis' questions about the 'love' of the Fujitsu Horizon system as puerile but quickly backtracks under questioning from Jason Beer at the Post Office Inquiry.
    The best data that was offered by the Post Office was the 'churn rate' - or the lack of subpostmasters voluntarily leaving the business rather than any concrete data the Post Office had about known issues and reports of bugs, errors and defects with the Horizon system.

      Brit here, interesting you are looking at UK politics I wonder if it's a similar reason that I look more at American politics.
      For me it's because my anger is once removed, if I concentrated on domestic politics it would drive me insane. Much love
      from the UK and good luck in November

    so 11 thousand branches of the post office nearly 1000 accused of steeling due to horizons did they not think when they where taking 10percent of all there branches to court there was a problem?

  • @petertaysum8947
    @petertaysum8947 Месяц назад +16

    Good commentary.
    If I heard that correctly, there are/were eleven thousand PO branches, yet POL sought 1000 prosecutions. That is surely an alarming proportion.

    • @michaeldonaghy3997
      @michaeldonaghy3997 Месяц назад +7

      You're right! They prosecuted nearly 10% of their workforce. Plus the sub-postmasters who paid thousands of money they didn't owe will be even higher. Who knows how big that percentage is

    • @jeangenie5807
      @jeangenie5807 Месяц назад +3

      It is a very alarming rate, and that should have been flagging that something was seriously wrong. Every year there were a few SPMRs who went rogue, usually for good reasons e.g the shop that supports their business/ branch is having financial problems. For example, things like long term road works creating a dramatic drop in foot fall to their lo action, but the proportion of the branches being affected by such things is minor, in comparison to the Horizon and even the previous Capture system. 😢

      @@jeangenie5807Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, but I wonder if there were some sub PMs who (because of remote accessing by F) made up smaller shortfalls themselves without challenging it. Perhaps they thought it was either staff theft, or poor training, and easier to remedy without contacting the helpline. If the till is out by a small (2 or 3 figure sum), let's fix it ourselves, keep a closer watch on the new staff member, and not put our head over the parapet.

    • @jeangenie5807
      @jeangenie5807 Месяц назад

      @@petertaysum8947 That is highly likely. On the Crown Office counter we were castigated if you showed a misbalance back then for more than 25p, whether under or over. Under 25p you were allowed to take it out or top it up out of your own pocket. Over that, and especially if you were a probationer like I was at the time, you often showed the unders or overs just incase when the main balance for the office found your error. My colleagues told me to 'cook it' and show a balance. Take the money out and keep it in a cash bag, because it would probably show up the next week as a short fall. Being a very honest person, I felt I couldn't do that. I changed my mind and fell in with 'custom and practice' when I got a shirty letter from the Head Office threatening me with dismissal if I showed too many discrepancies ( no matter how small! ) in my weekly balances. So much for trying to stay honest and not wanting to cook the books! Obviously large discrepancies usually pointed to miscounted stock or cash etc., but to be dismissed for 30p or 50p seemed grossly unfair and engendered dishonesty for larger amounts, for some colleagues.

    He says about it being wrong for a sub postmaster to cover up branch issues etc - while POL were doing literally that but on a larger scale, ie covering up that Horizon had bugs and defects that caused illusory losses. So POL are hoisted by the petard of their own Head of Legal..

    10:27 Ironic that he's talking about User Acceptance, when the system he's referring to had already been used in production for more than a decade. The whole point of User Acceptance Testing is that it's done and signed-off _before_ a product goes live.

    It’s fatuous playing this numbers game.
    If 99.9% of postmasters have a ‘good’ experience with horizon but the other 0.1% are falsely imprisoned and/or destroyed then the system is defective - not fit for purpose.
    If 99.9% of postmasters have a ‘good’ experience with the Post Office but the other 0.1% are falsely imprisoned and/or destroyed by it then it, the post office, is defective - not fit for purpose.
    The awful destruction wreaked by post office personnel (remember it’s PO/fushitsu personnel that caused the damage not a computer system) far outweighs the limited (and fast dwindling) service they provide.
    Pathetically the PO weren’t even capable of playing the numbers game.

The fact that suddenly SPMs were in their hundreds stealing could only be really explained by Horizen failing . The man is so arrogant and ckearly trained by his lawyers to lie and deviate from the questions and avoid answering truthfully
