The first day of Tara Gustin's new life was spent in a lot of pain.
"I was mentally prepared for it to a degree but I was surprised at how painful it was. They say I'm doing good; I've already been out walking," Tara said.
Tara spent years getting up the courage to consider laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. The CHI Health Weight Management Center at CHI Health Immanuel (formerly Alegent Creighton Health) counseled her on weight loss options and expectations. Tara decided on surgery.
"I feel sore and tired - very tired. Today is better than yesterday. Yesterday was really rough. They extended my belly with gasses so they could move everything around," Tara said.
Tara was not only uncomfortable, the day after surgery, she was also thirsty -- very thirsty. But Tara will tell you for the first time in her life, she wasn't thinking about food.
"Initially you come out of surgery and it's 24 hours before you can have anything to drink. I can swab to wet my mouth but I can't have anything to drink. I haven't had anything since the night before last. I thought I would be starving but I'm not even hungry at all," Tara said.
And as the clock ticks by, Tara knows she's healing. Even though the pain is a little more than she expected, Tara has no regrets.
"Anytime you have surgery, you are going to have some pain. This is a little more intense than I thought it would be. It is what it is. You get past that and I would do it again in a heartbeat" Tara said.

I am day 3 after bypass, I wish I saw this video before my surgery so I would be more prepared. You are exactly describing every thing I have been through except I was late in asking for pain meds from being shocked by the amount of pain I am in. I am way better now and recovering very well.

I'm just on my 9th day of gastric sleeve surgery recovery... it was a sameday surgery, so I went home the sameday day a few hours later. I was nauseous when I woke up from surgery and vomited a bit. I was in pain the first 3-4 days, though I'm mainly so fatigued/weak and not really getting all my proper protein/ hydration like I should (fault of my own). I have family members coming sometimes helping me since I'm a single female, which this has been tough for me on my own. Been trying to up my energy though.

@@bucs7826 According to my sister in law who was staying with my wife (her sister) and I during her recovery, it was the worst pain she ever felt when she woke up. The gas had already left her stomach and was already in her chest, causing agonizing pain. The nurses had to sedate her, she woke up about an hour later the pain is a lot more manageable. And it kept becoming more manageble from there, Gas x seemed to help, and walking laps around the ward did too. She only stayed about a night. Drinking those small cups every 15 minutes and chartering around the IV pole was said to be annoying
But apparently constipation tends to be an issue for a few days after, if your doctor didn't put you on liquids a few weeks before, may as well have laxatives ready at home if that be the case.
Oh and the food and chewable vitamins are terrible. When she was finally allowed to have beans or cottage cheese or decaf coffee it was about the best thing in the world. If you get the vitamins do not go for the 2 a day ones, I was forced to participate and it was aboslute torture. Once you finish the chewable stage get the capsule versions it really helps boost morale. Lets see what else, oh yeah no matter how much you're tempted DO NOT try pasta too soon, and DO NOT eat and drink at the same time for the first few months unless with something like beans or risotto. It is just not worth the pain.
Thats about all I could remember about pain. But my sister in law had a very bad back pain issue, no bulding disc no hip imbalance nothing, but she could barely walk and sleeping was apparently very hard, but one month after ther surgery? Passes out before we do, and back pain was basically gone. Though that may have had to do with getting a new bed. So all in all it can hurt badly or not at all but it's all worth it in the end for her.

Very true. I had surgery last Friday. The pain on day 1 is unspeakable. I had the same meds you did- the pump for pain meds. I got it all day on day 1 and then barely used it day 2. It seems to go from one extreme to another...meaning horrible pain and within 30 hrs it’s very manageable. I had to stay a second night because my nausea was really bad that there was no way I’d be able to hold the barium down. Being honest...I think I was so nauseous from the pain meds. Again day one was hell but just like the video it gets better after that.

Dobbs Xbox my hospital journey has been very similar as it was for this woman. The pain from the anesthesia was really severe and I never want to experience that ever again. I was so nauseous from the anesthesia that when I’d hit the clicker (same one in the video) for pain medication, I’d instantly get the feeling to vomit but my stomach was empty and there was nothing to throw up. After 30 hours, I pleaded with a nurse to allow me to let my bed lay flat instead of recliner and shortly afterwards, all of that anesthesia gas was released. A previous nurse on day one disconnected my bed so I couldn’t lay down. I have back problems and she didn’t care that I was having a lot of pain in my back. For whatever reason, the first nurse was insistent that I stay reclined. Finally, I begged a nurses aid to replug in my bed so I could lay flat and within minutes all of that anesthesia gas started release. During my hospital stay, I didn’t look at my phone or turn on the TV because I was so uncomfortable. I couldn’t sleep because I was constantly getting up out of bed due to a full feeling bladder. As soon as I got rid of the anesthesia out of my stomach, I finally got to sleep. The night nurse was so sweet and really took good care of me.
This video is about the hospital visit. My recovery and the experiences that I had throughout the different stages have had its challenges. 85 % of your stomach is removed and it’s like having a newborn stomach so you have relearn how to physically eat all over again. The most important thing to remember is to stay hydrated and take vitamins. I drink water and empty my bladder all day long. It’s annoying but necessary.
      Best of luck.

Gab C how many vitamins are you taking and which ones? I have my surgery next month and was told it will be decided at my 1 week post op appointment but I’m curious. Also are you chewing them or grinding them up?

    • @gabc6353
      @gabc6353 3 года назад +2

Sheneitra Howard sorry. I was admitted into the hospital to have my gallbladder removed on Friday. It’s common for sleeve patients to have their gallbladders removed between 3-6 months after surgery. I had problems with anesthesia so I had a reaction. Because of I eat so little, I can’t do a BM. To complicate things I’m also a vegan. No plantbased diet here. The chewable vitamin that I take is barium fusion. It’s affordable and cheaper to buy directly from the distributor. I got this text message from them and they will send you coupons.
For order assistance, please email contact@bariatricfusion.com and we will quickly respond to your concerns.
