    I wrote out notes so it's easier to follow!
    2-3 pea sized drops 7G 7:46
    1.5 oz 8RG (1.5 oz mark)
    2.5 oz developer ( 4 oz mark)
    2 oz 8G (6 oz mark)
    4 oz developer (10 oz mark)
    Apply 1:1 10 vol & 20 vol to gray areas before applying dye.
    Apply dye 1/3 of the way down; process 20 minutes.
    Apply dye to the rest of hair; process 10 minutes.

    Thank you for this video. I'm a 42 year old natural strawberry blonde who's fading with age. And I miss my true strawberry blonde hair color. I bought the first 2 colors but plan on going back to Sally's and picking up the other you listed. Thanks so much for these tips and recommendations.

    Thank you so much for this! This is my dream hair color, and every time I’ve gone to a professional and asked for it they make me either a brunette or I get highlights? Sometimes if you want something done right I guess you have to do it yourself. Gonna give this a try so excited!

    Thank you Dawn! This video was so helpful. I am a natural redhead and I have been using demi permanent dye from Esalon. I was afraid to try something else, since red can be so tricky. I followed your steps and color formula and it turned out great. It was not as messy as Esalon and I love the color, which is so close to my natural cover minus the white hair. I love your videos and calm way of explaining your tips. I am a few years younger than you and appreciate your advice so much!

      Hi Kathy!!!
      Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me that you found this helpful. I’m so happy to hear it! Red is so tricky and can easily go wrong. When you find that perfect formula it’s such a relief! Especially when we see those whites creeping in!😝 I hope you are having a wonderful day!!

    Great video, I am not a natural redhead but have been a redhead for over 40 years my mother was a Roux rep wanted me to be a redhead when I was in my early twenties. I have switched brands. I now use Chi. I use two colors 6RR and 7 C a little more than half on 7 C and a little less on 6RR. Color comes out to be a beautiful light copper. Get many many compliments. Again great video!

    Ha Ha!! Loved the intro....cute and funny....:) I used to be blonde, solid blonde (no highlights) and did it at home myself and since I'm naturally dark you can imagine how damaging it was to my hair....A friend of mine does my hair, and it's a blessing because what she does is not inexpensive in the salon and I'd have to go ever 4 weeks just to keep up on the grays/whites...You did/do a great job and if I ever lose "my girl" I'm referring back to this so that I remember what the heck I need to do...Color looks great with your gorgeous eyes!! KathysBeautyCareChats Your hair is amazing as well. I’m so envious of such light hair. I have dark brown/ black and silver. I’m allergic to hair dye. So I’m stuck with using henna and indigo. I’m hoping with the advances in cosmetic technology they would come out with a safer less allergenic hair dye. Till then I wish and I admire.

    Hi Dawn! Your hair turned out amazing!! In between going to my hair dresser I do my own roots. But I just use the Clairol nice n easy. I have a lot of white in my hair. So now I have very light blond hair. But in my earlier years it was darker blond with sun streaks. Which I really loved. Thanks for sharing my gorgeous friend! I’m thinking about cutting my hair to about your length. It’s getting too long. Hugs 😘🤗❤️

      Hi Sally! My mom has the same color hair as you. It was darker blonde when she was younger. Now it’s white, but she colors it with Clairol. I wish I could use clairol, but the reds aren’t right. They are either too bright or too dark. Anyways, I think you might like the shorter hair. I’m loving it this summer. It’s so much easier to put up, and nice and cool when left down. Thank you for the sweet words, Sally!! I hope you have a great day!

    Such a helpful video! Thank you for doing this! Your color is gorgeous! I am going to start coloring my hair again, it is all grey, and this was so helpful. Because I have all over grey, do I need to use the 10 developer now or later when I have roots? Thanks!

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  4 года назад +3

      I have heard that level 10 is the weakest, only 3% hydrogen peroxide, so it is good if you only want to lift your color 1 shade, or not at all. The reason it is recommended for all gray hair is that it will deposit more color because gray can be resistant. I always use vol 20 on myself. I think you could do either. If you have thin or fine hair vol 10 would be the least damaging though. I hope this helps!!

    Love the sexy music intro! Thank you so much for this Dawn!🌞 I know you put a lot of work into this video. I also color my hair at home and it takes work😣 I have always used various shades of auburn/brown but with the battle increasing grey and age I finally found the perfect found the perfect shade of lightest auburn. I have always heard that we should go lighter with age to avoid harshness. A couple of times I had trouble finding it in the store and I panicked! So your video really helped me to have other options. My husband calls me 'the mad scientists' when I am cooking experimenting with recipes so trying to tweak my hair color is up my alley. Thanks!🌞 I also hair very thick hair. Your hair is beautiful!

      GLNgal9 Haha!! That intro is shameless click bait!! 🤣😂. I know exactly how you felt when you couldn’t find your color. When I first started getting grays I went to the hair salon to have my hair colored. It seemed like every time it came out wrong or off in some way. I felt like I had no options. I started experimenting with boxed dye and that was still not right. Thank God for RUclips. It really empowered me to try concocting my own mixture. There are even videos about How To Go Gray! If/when we are ready we’ll be able to find a community of helpers. Thank you for the kind words! They mean a lot to me! I meant to ask you your name. Is it Gal?

      Dawn's Life, over 40 The deep conditioner I’m loving right now is made by Not Your Mother’s Green Matcha conditioner. It comes in a good size jar and is only $8.99 at Ulta! My fave daily conditioner is the argon oil one by Soap Box. It’s a clean line of products.
      Silicones really damaged my hair. It gives a nice slip but it’s liquid plastic and coats the hair so much that it blocks out moisture. Pantene is the worst. I had to use a good clarifying shampoo or even Dawn dish soap to strip off the silicones before deep conditioning. I can’t use any skin care that contains dimethicone because it causes a rash. I developed an allergy to it. 😊

    • @mamashiraz
      @mamashiraz 5 лет назад

      I almost forgot to mention this...choosing the right conditioner also depends on your hair’s porosity. The way you tell is if a strand floats (high) or sinks (low). I have low porosity so I shampoo in very warm water to open the cuticle and use a plastic cap for deep conditioning. 😊

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  5 лет назад +1

      mama byrd Thank you so much! I don’t want to damage or dry out my hair, so I’m headed to Ulta today to get the Not Your Mother’s!! I have low porosity hair too, so I’ll do what you do. I really appreciate the recommendations and suggestions! I’ll let you know how I like it!! Have a great day!!🥰🥰🥰

    • @mamashiraz
      @mamashiraz 5 лет назад

      Dawn's Life, over 40 I really hope you like it! I looked through all the conditioners they carry and most all the high end lines have dimethicone! DevaCurl is one that doesn’t but I haven’t tried it yet...it’s rather expensive. The Soap Box brand is carried at a local pharmacy and is reasonable.
      My options are even more limited because I’ve developed an allergy to coconut (autoimmune issues) and it seems they put coconut in everything these days.
      Love year videos!! 😊💜

    Hi Dawn,
    Yeah baby! LOL 😂😂😂😂
    The colour looks fantastic! With these new highlights and that cut, I would love to see your hair styled in big hot rollers for a glam night out. I'm too much of a chicken to dye my own hair but admire you for being so creative (not to mention brave!) mixing your own "recipe". The results are so pretty. Can you use this on your eyebrows? BTW I always cut tubes open too - in order to get that very last drop. ☺ This was so relaxing watching you. I understand about the sunlit brown. It adds more dimension with a touch of "auburn". Well done!

      @@DawnsLifeover40 No, I really haven't been enjoying the heat. My car air conditioner quit working. Arriving at my destinations soaking wet is not very enjoyable. Currently, we only have windows air conditioners at our house. The bedroom one doesn't seem to be blowing out very cold air. I also have the ceiling fan running. It's still pretty humid in there, which makes it pretty hard to get good sleep. Going through Perimenopause, with hot flashes, doesn't make things any better. I'm sorry. I shouldn't be complaining. It could be wintertime, with the sub arctic temperatures that we had last year.
      Currently, the city has been replacing my road. They've dug over four feet down and have hit things which cause the water to spray up in the air. The city has turned our water off all day, on various occasions. We have been instructed to move our cars and park them at least one block away. Carrying groceries from that far away has not been very fun.
      You know what? It sounds like I have been doing nothing but complaining about how difficult things have been for me right now. If I lived in a Third-world country, I would probably be shaking my head at Americans who have to go through such "hardships."

      Gina,
      I’d be complaining too. That sounds really unpleasant. I’ve been there!!! Lots of construction going on all around me too, but thankfully the air conditioner is working. It has been so hot that we have been staying indoors unless we are at the pool.
      I just said to my husband “I hate to complain because winter was so long.” My husband said “I’ll take winter!” Haha! It’s all a matter of perspective. 80 degrees sounds perfect right about now!
      Happy Independence Day!! Stay safe (and cool).
      Love,
      Dawn🥰

    hi late 40s here, my hair is more of dirty blonde, mixed with the medium golden blonde, bleached ends, this is the color I would like to acheive however my hair is down to my bum, and I want to do all over, is that mixture going to be enough or double it?also have gray streaks on temples

    Dawn, thanks to our stay home orders I'm new to the self-color world. I did this last night and it turned out great. The formula matches my naturally strawberry blonde hair perfectly!! Question though, how often do you color your hair at home? Every 6 weeks? More frequent? Just want to know what to expect as far as longevity since this was my first time. Thanks!

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  4 года назад

      Hi Colleen! Since you have naturally strawberry blonde hair like me, you may not notice grays(whites in my case) growing in. Which is great!!! I usually do my roots every 6-8 weeks. I’m so glad this formula worked out well for you!! When I filmed my hair coloring videos I had no idea how helpful they would be during this time. I can’t wait until life goes back to normal though!!!
      Have a great day!!

      Dawn's Life, over 40 I definitely notice my hair is getting more blonde... just like you mentioned in the video. This color combo matches my natural red perfectly. Thanks for getting back to me on the frequency!! I already ordered more to have in stock at home. :)

  • @hipretty

    Hi Dawn! Do you whip up these same amounts whether you do just the roots or whether you do the entire head? It would seem very challenging to figure out the amount for just the roots. Or do you always pull it through to the ends to keep the overall color fresh...while the ends are protected with coconut oil anyway?

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  3 года назад +1

      I whip up the same amount and pull it through to freshen up the ends. You’re right, it would be a challenge to concoct enough for just a root touch up.

    Hello Dawn I sent to the Salon today and I had her out on an all over color and I'm going to stop the highlighting....once I need another color I. Going to give your formula a try...I've never done my color before but after watching this video many times I think I can do it....my grays are still showing tonight so her color must not be as good as the Wella Charm...now I have a question? since I'm going to be using your colors do I need to put it all over to the ends at the beginning for the first time or should I still half the time like you did here? Thank you so much...my grays are very few but they are coming in around the part and my temples but not noticeable

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  5 лет назад +1

      If your hair is healthy at the ends (not to porous from highlighting) I’d put the color on the ends for 10 min less than the rest of your hair when you do it the first time. Do a small section of your hair (that’s hidden) as a patch test prior to coloring your hair to make sure your hair color comes out the right color. It’s so nice to be able to color your hair in the privacy of your own home.

    Wow that opening! Very “on the beach” and looking sexy. Wella should use you as a model for their products. Your hair looks healthy with the new cut/color.
    I have used the Ion products before and they are very good.
    After coloring since it is freshly shampooed I try to wait 4-5 days before the first shampoo. It seems to make my color last 6-7 weeks. I have been using the same colorist for about 20 years and she really knows my hair & color I love. We do a quick trim of ends & bangs each time also.
    Love your finished product. Very beautiful on your skin tone.

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  4 года назад +1

      It really doesn’t fade much at all. I do avoid sun directly on my head, and use a sulfate free shampoo. I think that really helps.

      @lucyl697 3 года назад

      Also I went to a salon for a consultation, they pretty much said they would charge me $200 to tone my hair which would last probably a week. I’m not doing that, if I’m gonna use toner I’ll do it myself

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  3 года назад +1

      Oh I’m so sorry it didn’t turn out for you. Bleached hair is very tricky because it’s pourous and needs to be filled before it can properly take color.
      If not, the results are unpredictable. I would have it done professionally, or wait until healthy hair grows out. Thank you for sharing your experience.

      8RG can turn bright pinkish-red over bleached, over-processed hair. If you try again, you can try reducing the red. You can also even out the porosity of hair by dampening the bleached parts before coloring. You may just want to leave it on for less time.
      Next time, do a strand test to make sure you're happy with the color. I know no one likes doing strand tests, but it's important if you want to experiment and can't live with crazy things like having pink or orange hair if you mess it up!

    I don't understand why they can't just sell one color that you can use why do you have to buy three different colors and figure out which ones to use it makes it so complicated in my opinion? I love your hair color by the way!

    • @DawnsLifeover40
      @DawnsLifeover40  4 года назад +1

      Hi Kara!
      I totally agree with you! You have to be a bit of a chemist to color your hair at home and achieve salon results. I’ve heard Madison Reed does this. They customize a kit that’s “just for you” but I’m afraid to stray from the formula I’m currently using. I struggled for years using different kits that came out way too Auburn or too blonde. Thank you for the kind words!
      Have a wonderful day!
