Nichelle Nichols, trailblazing 'Star Trek' actress, dies at 89

- Actress and singer Nichelle Nichols, best known for her groundbreaking portrayal of Lt. Nyota Uhura in "Star Trek: The Original Series," has died at age 89, according to a statement from her son, Kyle Johnson.
Nichols portrayed communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura in the "Star Trek" TV series and many of its film offshoots.
When "Star Trek" began in 1966, Nichols was a television rarity: a Black woman in a notable role on a prime-time television series. There had been African-American women on TV before, but they often played domestic workers and had small roles; Nichols' Uhura was an integral part of the multicultural "Star Trek" crew.
The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. called it "the first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a Black woman in television history."
Nichols is widely known for participating in one of the first interracial kisses on US television when her character kissed James T. Kirk, portrayed by White Canadian actor William Shatner. In an interview with CNN in 2014, Nichols said the kiss scene "changed television forever, and it also changed the way people looked at one another."

I remember growing up watching Star Trek. We actually called it Star Trak for some reason just like my other friends. What was interesting was that there was not a scant of thought about racism or people of color on the show. It was only later as an adult did I find out that it was somehow a controversial issue. In a way it proves that racism has to be taught to be seen as strange or wrong. Thank you Nichelle Nichols for being an important mark on history and letting me see just another human being like any other untainted and pure.
You are so right....
I am 60 and I was never aware growing up that the kiss was controversial. When I discovered this as a young adult I was shocked. It made me look at the civil rights history of America and to be utterly appalled that segregation wasn't ended until 1964, some two years after I was born.....
@Marie Lucas ??????
@@MKR5210 I'm 60 as well. After I moved away from home and joined the service for nearly 22 years; it was my real experience in meeting people from all types of backgrounds. I consider myself lucky to have this experience. I remember a long time ago a man commented on seeing a Black Pilot flying the SR-71 Black Bird. He said "It is nice to see a black man fly a multi million dollar aircraft" My response was "I just see a man"
Yep, and you're a big part of racism right there dude
Wow first Bill Russell now her.

As a child born in the 70s Star Trek changed my life. It was all inclusive like my family and military surroundings, but when my military parent ended their career during my childhood I felt kind of lost and powerless for a second because few people in school looked like me or the people I had known up to that point. Ms. Nichols as Lieutenant Uhura was the first woman of color I watched on Television in a leading positive role with a position of power. She gave me hope as a child. Ms. Nichols was a trailblazer. She impacted people of all races for generations. She is greatly missed.
Nichelle was a beautiful and graceful woman. No other woman could have played Uhura. She brought depth, class and playfulness to that character. RIP Nichelle.

Graceful. Dignified. Stately. Inspiring. Just a few of many wonderful words to describe Nichelle Nichols. I grew up watching Star Trek and have always been amazed and inspired by the messages and the actors that portrayed the characters. Lt. Uhura was inspiring on many levels to so many people. It was fitting that she played the role of a Communications Officer. May her message continue to broadcast on all subspace frequencies. Rest In Peace, Nichelle Nichols.

I always liked her. I didn’t know a thing about her, but I always believed she was the personification of beauty, grace, dignity, and elegance.
and brains.
I FULLY believe her son killed her. There is so much footage of him cursing her out and being abusive towards her, there is footage of her telling “help, my son is trying to destroy me”, all of her friends claim her son isolated her from them and they could not reach her. Her son KYLE JOHNSON had her in a conservatorship that was just like Britney’s. She was old, yes, but her mind was there. Nobody deserves what Nichelle went through at the hands of her son. There is footage of her saying that she wants to be the boss of herself and that her son was saying untrue things in court to get her in a conservatorship. Kyle Johnson is ABUSIVE

She was a true role model during my childhood. Even the lead lady crimefighters I saw--Honey West, Emma Peele, April Dancer--had their share of damsel in distress moments. Not Uhura. She served and survived along side the men. I saw that it was possible to work as an equal with men because of her.

Before Nichelle Nichols, NASA only recruited from the military. In the late 70s, she partnered with NASA to develop a STEM program & lead the recruitment effort for the Space Shuttle program with a focus on increasing the number of female & POC applicants, halting her career to travel, speak, & recruit across the nation. Her 2018 documentary _Woman In Motion_ is worth watching today.

Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) will always remain in my heart of hearts for all time a hero of mine. I was fortunate to be from a certain young generation when the original Star Trek series aired.
