  • I just finished another FANTASTIC Walter Isaacson Biography. This time his subject matter was Elon Musk. I couldn't help but noticed so many personality similarities between these two titans of innovation. Let's talk about it and the philosophical question: Is their personality necessary to innovate?

I’m halfway through reading the Elon Musk book. I found your conclusion on both of the legends quite good. They both have this idea of the world that does not yet exist and believe in it so much that the only wat to make people believe is to make it thru and sometimes that means being a asshole or setting unreasonable deadlines. But I believe that without this determination and behavior it is not possible, especially the scale these two legends have achieved. I also found that Simon Sinek in his book ‘Start with why’ makes a great comment about this. Where he sees steve jobs as the visionair, who inspires and pushes people to believe what he believes. Where Steve Wozniak has the role to ‘make it happen’. Don’t know why this hasn’t got more views. I would say keep going and the algorithm will come to you!!

To add to the point you make at the end about what person would be the best CEO? I believe it depends on the fase the business is in and what fase the industry is in. Someone like Tim Cook is maybe better in taking gradual steps to making a multi billion dollars business, where as Steve Jobs would be better at making great innovations and via this way be the leader of the market. So to answer the question: Is it necessary to be an asshole to become a CEO of the magnitude of Elon or Steve? I think it depends on how unrealistic the vision is. The more ‘unrealistic’, the more convincing there needs to be done and the more disbelief people have in your plans, so maybe that means you have to be an asshole, to convince people your path is the right path. I think it’s not one or the other, I think it a synergy between the two.

That is a fantastic point you made. Early days of Apple required a Jobs, and now managing his vision requires Cook. Appreciate you sharing your insight and the support!
