The Sony VGC-4EM otherwise known as a vertical grip or battery grip is designed to help extend the battery life if your camera as it allows you to use an extra battery but its also helpful when shooting in the portrait orientation. It's currently designed for two cameras at the time of this video. These are the Sony A7R IV And the A9 II.
UPDATED: this grip will fit on the Sony A7S III
It's designed to have the same weather resistance as those cameras and has several buttons and switches to make shooting and changing settings and features on the grip easier. The grip comes as it is and does not come with an extra battery, so if you want to double that battery life but only have one battery you may need to get another. They do only accept the NPFZ1000 batteries.
Need an extra battery?? I recommend the genuine Sony Z type batteries.

Getting the initial battery door off was super helpful! Your video popped up in my first search on how to use. Thanks a million!
Hi John, why I can't display the percentage of both batteries with this (expensive) BG? With my old Fujifilm gear I was able to see the % of both batteries (at a small fraction of its cost)...
Thanks.
Hi John so can you pick which battery to use?
Hi Jonathan, just bought the VGC-4EM and used your videp to show me the setup and unstructions to use. I found it very helpful. Hope you're doing well. Stuart Macdonald
Thanks Stuart! I'm glad I could help. I'm doing well! Hope you are too! 😊
Very helpful thankyou!
Glad it was helpful!
this is the only place online ive seen a grip advertised to fit both the A7SIII and the A7IV. Can you confirm that is 100% accurate?
Hello is it Support A7C?
I think everyone knows what a battery grip is. What I would have liked to know is the build quality like is it plastic or metal or how sturdy it is when a heavy lens is attached and is on a tripod.
Hello John.
Quick question, I found awkward the thing of the battery door, but is this a 3 batteries vertical grip? Seems to have a room in the column no (just behind the battery door once in place) ?
It's a bit fidgety but it isn't unfortunately. I wish it was, just like the a99. It can only fit 2 batteries.
Hi John,
thanks for your video.
I have a question for you, do you know if this battery Grip is also compatible with the new Sony Alpha 7 IV?
Thanks for all, regards
Luca
Yes, I use it on that camera
Hello, could you tell me please is it possible to put 1 battery and 1 dummy battery (220v power) in this grip?
To work via 220v power but have a backup as a battery?
Does it have a hole for cord from dummy battery?
no, you can't do it
Would using the vertical grip compromise the weather seal around the battery compartment?
No it won't. There are seals around the grip that would prevent any moisture from getting in. Just make sure that the grip is properly attached to the camera.
Do the extra battery life and vertical shooting function worth over the additional weight and size you have to carry?
It depends on the situation. For travel, not a chance lol. If it were for portrait shoots, sporting events and functions or anywhere where it requires me to shoot quickly without having to worry about battery life, I would say its worth it.
Hey John,
Are you Shure, that this one fits for the A7 Siii? Didn't found anything
Definitely fits. Just double checked on a few camera websites and on alphauniverse.
Is there any play between the grip and the body?
Just got mine, and the amount of play is kinda disconcerting.
None at all! Fits perfectly!
How the hell did you move the battery cover out the way to install the grip? I'm thoroughly confused even with looking at the manual 😅
There is a little switch to remove the battery door hehe.
Does a standard L bracket fit well with the grip on?
To be honest, I'm not too sure sorry!
Thanks for information on the grip, how long does the 2 batteries last on daily usage?
Give or take, at least 2000 shots.
@@JohnSisonPhotography how long for video?
@@JohnSisonPhotography i did more than 2.700 photos with on battery RAW uncompressed + jpg x fine on 2nd card
Can you charge the batteries with the grip installed?
Yes you can.
Do you know if this fits the A7S3? Thanks 👍🏻
Will definitely fit the a7siii.
Nice :)
Thanks 😁
Hi John, is it possible to use Sony grips also with just one battery?
Yes it is :)
John Sison Great. Thanks!
How does it work with gimbles?
It will be too high for many gimbals in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend it.
Did you up date the title to reflect the AS7III?
Yes I did :)
Thank you ! I was wondering if this was compatible. Awesome review.
Is it compatible with the a9?
No its not compatible because the grip of the a9 ii is different. The VG-C3EM is the grip that would be compatible with the first gen a9.
Why have they changed it so you need to remove the door? The old A mount cameras, the door would fit inside the grip. This doesn't seem like progress.
I know right! I miss that but it honestly baffles me.
@@JohnSisonPhotography thanks John. There's a few things they have changed I don't like about the e mount. But I guess that is progress ;)
is it compatible with a7siii?
Yes it is!
Thanks for sharing! And this is cool! By the way, do you think this vertical grip would add too much weight for the camera?
You are welcome! The grip weighs approximately 290 grams plus the two batteries 83 grams each. 456 grams altogether 🙄 So you are adding quite a bit of weight to it.
Yes more weight but it makes the camera MUCH more comfortable to hold and shoot! IMHO totally worth the investment
Nick P Thanks yo! I already used it for month lol.
李未名 i hope you are liking it! After i got use to using the battery grip the camera just doesn’t feel the same without it. 👍
hey John, thanks for making the video. i think your video camera is focusing on the object in the foreground and not prioritizing to your face/ eyes. you're a little blurry. you probably already know this, or maybe my eyeballs are not calibrated :).
Haha I am aware of it - Hopefully with my latest videos it's better. But even better news for you, your eyes do not require any calibrating 😜
It gives unappropriate battery warn and the camera closes itself
Oh! That's odd. I have never had that issue with my one.
How much for this b grip, guy?
Check the link in the description for prices :)
Is that all I need to do?
That's all you need to do :)
I bought the Sony a7riv and went completely broke lol Now I need to save up for this grip UGH lol
Haha the saving game continues!
@@JohnSisonPhotography I bought the grip lol from Amazon, The Grip from Neweer w/e its called ..
this is cool! but i think these are made more for photographers than videographers. bigger and harder to set up with the gimbal.
wear a beanie next time haha
Definitely made more for the photographers rather than the videographers.
Haha yes maybe a beanie but it ain't beanie weather at the moment😂
No cable like the 3rd party grip on my A6500! 😀😀😀
Unfortunately not
Troppo costoso
Agreed! Sony tax 😅
yeah shame the cameras sooo annoyingly small , even with the grip .it looks like your making animal figures with your overlapping hands , SONY make your cameras bigger , so us with hands not like claws can grip the bloody things
The hat looks dumb anyway.
😅
