I do miss 2D hand drawn traditional animation so much. It’s really unique, colorful, expressive and magical. It can do things that live-action and even 3D CGI can only dream of. We need more of it in movie theaters. Disney, Dreamworks and all other studios should invest more 2D animated feature films in the future.
However, i’m a huge fan of 3D CGI animation as well. Actually my favorite animated films are in 3D: The Incredibles, Spider-Verse and Ratatouille. But that’s not because it’s in 3D, it’s mostly because of the storytelling. I think now we are seeing new animation techniques that changing the industry for good like Klaus, Spider-Verse and Arcane. Combining the best of both worlds into one.
TL DR: 3D animation is beautiful when it’s done right, but 2D animation should come back as well to have variety. Both are good in my book.

I felt like the shows and movies that adopted 3d animation as a “special effect” have the right idea. Similarly to 90s films using cgi very sparingly allows the creators to highlight very specific scenes with an effect that simply wouldnt be possible witg traditional or practical effects. The problem occurs when the entire production turns to the new method and the magic of traditional 2d animation and expression is lost. Anime seems to be more willing to carry on the torch with shows like Demon Slayer that have excellent demonstrations of the marriage between 2 and 3d art.

    • @StephanieKimPascaru

I love 2D animated movies too and agreed with many points made in this video, but I do think that audiences are far more receptive to CGI animated movies vs 2D ones. Because audiences perceive 2D films as old fashioned, they are less likely to watch them and and this results in poor box office returns (and I saw this as someone why like 2d animation).
Like you brought up a lot of box office data in this video and the 2d films did poorly every time in the last 20 years. You argued that this was due to poor stories or highly competitive release dates, but that doesn't explain everything because many CGI movies also had poor stories or competitive release dates but they still made significantly more money.
Case in point: Tangled. This video proposes that Tangled didn't have heavy competition at the box office, but that's not true. Tangled was released a mere *5 days* after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. By all accounts, it should have been MURDERED at the box office. But it wasn't because it told an amazing movie and because it was a CGI animated film. I can almost guarantee that if Tangled was animated in 2D, it would not have fared as well.
The fact is studios have good reasons not to make 2D animated films anymore. They don't make as much money and the sales data backs it up. It all comes back to audiences not being able to get over their preference for 3D animation. That being said, I think studios should have a vested interest in making 2D films that looks so amazing that they convince a skeptical audience to give them a chance. Like look at 2D anime movies, those do extremely well at the box office because studios go all out on animation, they are just as exiting as 3D animation. If they are smart, studios could totally change the perception of 2D films and make them profitable again.

    • @StephanieKimPascaru

The most aesthetically pleasing films, I think, are those from around the turn of the millennium that seamlessly merged 2D and 3D animation. Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet are, by a huge margin, the best Disney films ever made, while some of Dreamwork's best films are Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, The Road to El Dorado, and Prince of Egypt.
I used to absolutely despise fully 3D-animated films throughout my youth, not only because traditional animation always looks far more appealing, but coincidentally they also tend to have superior scripts, soundtrack and voice acting, with very few exceptions. Before my late teens I simply refused to watch animated films that were not (primarily) 2D. It is only now in my adult years that I have come to see 3D as a genuine art form meant to compliment, albeit never replace, traditional 2D animation, to create something truly beautiful. I have even come to appreciate a handful of computer-animated films, such as the Kung Fu Panda trilogy. But 2D will always be superior in the end.

It must be said that in animated films, 3D is a trend, and not just for Disney. With the majority of the public seeming to prefer 3D, Disney is just following the trend.
However all is not lost, I had understood that the new Disney leader was interested in a return of 2D animation, and for the Tiana series which will arrive in 2023 I still have a little hope that it will be the same 2D animation style as the movie.

I’m sick of 3D animation but I love 2D and 3D with 2D effects. Like event though arcane, and into the spiderverse are 3D they look amazing.
I hope 2D gets popular again here in the west. Hunchback of Notre dame and the prince of Egypt look so beautiful. Also you can almost always count on a 2D animated movie to be a good movie. Bad 2D movies are a rarity.
Like just look at studio ghibli, of all their 2d movies only 1 or 2 weren’t that great but even those two were received better than their only 3D movie which isn’t just bad in animation but story also.

I guess there has been enough content, shows and movies that I haven't really worried about not have 2d or 3d animation. Heavy on how 2D ages better than 3D. Mega mind is an amazing movie but the animation started looking dated 5 years after it’s release. Disney and Pixar’s movies have a longer shelf life but it’s very strange to rewatch a movie like tangled or Toy Story 3 and start to notice the animation aging slightly. Especially with Toy Story 3 since we now have Toy Story 4 to compare it to and I’m sure once Toy Story 5 comes out we’ll see the cracks in Toy Story 4. Vs something like Snow White which was made 80 years ago and still holds up. Sure it looks a little dated but that’s mostly due to the art style and the way the backgrounds are painted and other things that have nothing to do with the animation. When comparing something like Cinderella vs the little mermaid two movies that came out decades apart from each other they don’t look that different from eachother quality wise. 2D animation ages like fine wine while 3D ages like milk. I rest my case.

It would be wonderful to see 2D animation theatrical films making a comeback. It’s really underrated. Unfortunately these days it seems to work only for tv cartoons or game apps adverts but I still think it’s just as important as CGI. At least there’s Studio Ghibli, Netflix and indie animators out there on RUclips keeping traditional animation alive…

I do animate both 3D and 2D (digitalized traditional) animation and I find them having their own ups and downs but I don't find them being more or less difficult than one another other in generally. I don't like to compare these two techniques as well as other ones such as stop motion at all since I found them very different in technical style. I found both of them being equally very time consuming in different ways: despite of you can save still frames on 2D animation without looking awkward while you can reuse 3D models in CGI, it still takes forever to draw few seconds of 2D animations in traditional animation while takes forever to render few seconds of 3D animation in CGI. I do mostly 2D in ClipArt Studio Paint right now due to my current home computers are quiet too old as well as I had practice it by myself when I was 15 while I had recently learned 3D at my gymnasium for computer graphics. It's more easier to make the CGI to fall awkwardly flat into uncanny valley than awkward off model 2D for me, especially when you need them to move almost all the time or else they suddenly looks like stiff soulless plastic. Comparing CGI with traditional is like comparing practical effects with CGI: you don't get the same believable feeling since practical uses real physics while CGI uses invisible simulation only seen by the audience. I remember when I was younger I didn't even consider them as the same medium and all I found in common between these main animation techniques is they aren't made in real time but artificial frames which is just basically the animation part. I found the comparison similar between a painting and a photograph, both are still basically images. You can also animate living people with still images like a stop motion and puppetry if filmed in real time is just live action so film techniques don't have any attached art styles or genre really. Cartoon is a very misleading unprofessional term for animation in general, which means most live action movies we see today technically consists of cartoons due to CGI such as the background. I think the common usage for the term cartoon to animation and comics is because the history of animation and comics where they started out as mostly cartoons and caricatures while most still are to this day.
