Retconning previous Pooh stories like the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Pooh's Grand Adventure, the Tigger Movie, and Piglet's Big Movie, among other things, feels more like an attempt at sabotaging 2D animation. The company cared very little about 2D characters after they flanderized the Pooh cast. While Princess and the Frog felt like a celebratory send off to some people, Winnie the Pooh 2011 felt like a defecation not only on Walt Disney's Grave, but also A.A. Milne's. It was the idea of marriage to a prince she liked not the person himself. Which bordered on creepy when she was basically asking the little brother how old he was at the end of the movie 😒. And Disney can't lie that away like they did with Ariel and Eric. Funny they made a note to say her age 16 yet neglected to say how old Eric was.🤔 Wonder why. They should of put in a scene where it shows Lottie as an adult realizing money doesn’t buy her happiness and it only rents it for her which is why she has that dream in the first place. Being rich and her cushy living situation wouldn’t change that much from marrying a prince. So maybe she could of revealed she views princes as not just charming & romantic- but as potential partners who would TRULY love her because all her partner other options in the area are both poorer and have lower social status and is horrified of the idea of never finding a man who will truly love and cherish her as A PERSON instead of someone who just wants to use her because they view her as nothing more than a tool to increase riches/social mobility/social status. Fear would of made her characterization better.

I love Lottie so much. She's the epitome of "spoiled sweet". Yes, she was born into wealth, but that's not her fault any more than Tiana being born into poverty is _her_ fault. Her wealth has no bearing on her character. The fact that her best friend is a black woman in the 1920s deep south is indicative of her decency. The first scene of her as an adult has her throwing money at Tiana- more than she has earned over years of working two full time jobs- just to cater a single event. When Tiana's costume is ruined, she leaves her dreamboat "Naveen" behind to tend to her friend. Yes, she's a touch self-absorbed, but damn- I thought we _liked_ characters with realistic flaws these days? And even so, she makes it clear that Tiana's happiness means more to her than her shallow, childish dream.
We stan Lottie in this house.

Lottie breaks the evil jealous second female love interest trope and is a real friend to Tiana. Just because Lottie comes from a rich family doesn't mean Tiana is entitled to her wealth. Tiana is a stoic proud working woman and Lottie and her father show support by going to the diner that she works at. And is clearly not the usual clientele of that diner but they don't look down at Tiana about it. Plus, it's Lottie who buys the benette? donut things that allows Tiana to buy the building in the first place. She didn't make Tiana beg for money and play the 'savior' role. It was respectful. Lottie never made fun of Tiana's dream unlike most of the other side characters in the beginning of the movie telling her to go out and have fun wasting their money. When Tiana's dress got ruined, Lottie put her in a dress and tiara, even though she was trying to nab the prince. She thought of Tiana as a princess too on an equal level at her. Then at the end of the movie, she didn't try to steal Naven or get jealous, she was happy for her friend's love because she's a romantic at heart. Plus, Lottie is necessary to the story.
Dr. Facilier is a dark mirror of Tiana. He's jealous of other's people's wealth and fame. He feels like people don't see him because of it. This makes him consumed with greed and envy so that he does evil things. While Tiana is literally the best friends with the richest girl in town. And doesn't greedily envy her friend's inherited wealth only working on making her own. Dr. Facilier is what Tiana could be if she wanted to take the easy way. It would probably be easy to trick Lottie into 'helping' make her dream come true faster because Lottie is a sheltered romantic. But there is a line neither crosses as they support each other's dreams.
Also, Lottie is the yin to Tiana's yang. Tiana is stoic and realistic. Lottie is bubbly and idealistic. And they balance each other out. I'm sure Lottie was very supportive about following dreams because she was a romantic. She might have been very important emotional friend that was young at heart enough to not believe in following the status quo. And Tiana is probably that grounded reliable friend that Lottie goes to for real advice. Because Lottie is so rich, other girls are probably envious and do one of two thing. Nice up front and talk shit behind her back or are obvious about not liking Lottie. Tiana is probably her only true friend. And it probably works because they have two very different dreams and personalities. Lottie one of the few female friends that isn't two faces, she's just eccentric. It's wrong to hate her just because she's rich.

People are totally unfair towards Cinderella. It's not her fault that she's a victim of familial abuse since childhood and that she has literally NOWHERE to go. She's a woman in the 1800's who isn't married and whose home and fortune are being held hostage by her abusers. If she tried striking out on her own she'd likely end up on the streets homeless due to the lack of job opportunities for women back then.
Not to mention she actually has several aspects to her personality that set her apart from her contemporaries. She doesn't just take the abuse and not react from it, she shows frustration, anger, and sadness from how she's treated, but she also doesn't let it turn her into a mean person and still shows kindness and joy in her daily life. She also tells jokes a few points in the movie.
The hatred this character gets boils down to victim blaming as I see it. If you want to argue that it would make for a more compelling story that she strikes out on her own and finds a successful life that way then you can but that's just not a realistic option for the character to take unless she has already lost the security of her home and she can only make a last ditch effort to secure her happiness as what happens in Cinderella 3. Heck, after taking that option she almost ends up banished and without a home which is exactly what could have happened if she left her family in the first movie.

I feel like there is a little more to Lottie than what was initially said- I could guarantee that Lottie and Tiana are such good friends, that she probably would have bought the mill if she asked or tried to as a gift. The nuance here is that she didn't, bc she knows Tiana wouldn't appreciate that gesture as it would undermine her own efforts. Lottie wouldn't hesitate to do stuff for Tiana, but she stops herself short out of respect and instead does stuff like hiring her friend for events (not only bc Tiana is her friend, but bc she knows the value of Tiana's work and her talent). Ofc, I'm not saying Tiana wouldn't have appreciated it, and I'm sure Lottie has probably offered a couple times before, but Tiana's character would probably feel unfufilled if she didn't achieve her and her father's dream herself.

One thing you missed is that, despite being a spoiled brat, Charlotte is a great friend.
After Tiana falls into the buffet table, Charlotte takes her upstairs to get changed. This is minutes after she throws a tantrum about Naveen being late AND right after her first dance with Naveen. Instead of dismissing Tiana to woo the prince, she asks what’s wrong and helps Tiana.
At the end of the movie, when Charlotte realizes that Naveen loves Tiana, instead of turning into a brat and whining about losing her prince, Charlotte cries tears of joy for her friend. Charlotte says she will kiss Naveen, “No marriage required,”.
There’s even a theory that Charlotte offered Tiana the money for the restaurant (before the film jumped to their present) but Tiana refused because it wasn’t earned.
Disney could have easily gone the twist villain route with Charlotte and it would have been justified given her personality, time period, and race relations back then. Yet they gave her a kind (arguably selfless) heart. Also her design was gorgeous; hyper feminine characters were and always will be my weakness.

    I adore Lottie and I can't really understand why people dislike her, just because she is obsessed with wanting to marry a prince or because she's got all this money while Tiana doesn't. Like;
ONE: Yeah that would kinda not make the movie happen.
TWO: These girls grew up together, Charlotte would have to be more than a little aware of how headstrong Tiana is and how important it is for her to have earnt the restaurant with her own money
THREE: Charlotte clearly does because she hires Tiana to cook for the party and then pays her all the money out of her Daddy's wallet (If anything her excitement to tell Tiana tells you it was her idea, not her Daddy's). Do you know what Tiana does? tells her it's too much but knows Charlotte, as well as Charlotte, knows her so at best puts up a token refusal before taking it.
FOUR: Her dream is to marry a prince sure, but she gives up on marrying Naveen the second she realises how Tiana has come to care about him AND because her best friend now oozes mucus.
These are basically the reasons I love her.

But even with that difference and clashing personalities they are still friends. She’s a great character that some people to show can be good people/characters they just are arrogant because of the way they were brought up. She doesn’t have any character development but a shiny factor in her character- is she cherishes her friendship with Tiana. If they ever make a series for Princess and the Frog I would love if Charlotte got some development.

I think what went wrong with this film is exactly that Disney tried to parody themselves. In order to watch it, as amazingly written as it is, you must be familiar with all the tropes they used in the previous princess films to get that they are subverted. Also, sadly, people are suckers for repetition; they will prefer the tired princess fairytale formula over a story that makes them think from the get go. Keep in mind that Tangled was the next film and did great: classic princess film, misaimed marketing to make it look like a cool slapstick action flick a la despicable me, of course it was in CGi because all the successful films of that time were in CGI. And it began.
It went to the point that even recent 2D films like Klaus wouldn't be as successful if they didn't look like CG... Shame, really.

You completly shunned Lottie its almost like you ignore all the good she has and only focus on her bad traits. SHE was the one who cleaned Tiana up and have her a blue dress despite only wearing PINK, therby implying she bought that dress for T. SHE didn’t kiss frog Naveen to marry him or something, she TRYED to break the spell for T because SHE was the carnival princess. She might be spoiled but she would do ANYTHING for T. Oh, also she made it possible for T to buy the old mill. She could’ve given her the money from the start, but we can see that Tiana wants to earn money herself and doesn’t want pity, she would’ve refused Lotties money. That’s why Lottie took her as a caterer and gave her the rest of the money that she needed.
+ now that you mentioned segregation, did you notice how Lottie and her father came to Tianas workplace? A caffee which is 90% filled with balck customers, probably in the black part of the city and yet they came there. By all accounts Lottie and her dad are remarkable, but I think they’re only able to be like this because they are the richest family in New Orleans. Nevertheless, they were always kind towards Tiana and her mom, they could’ve easily been the villians of this story.

I get the impression that Tiana still lives in her mom’s home, in the movie we transition young Tiana running out of her room screaming, then she comes into the same room as a young woman. Plus, her still living with her mom means ALL of what money she can get is saved to purchase the mill
I am going to point out a couple issues with what you said about Lottie. Yes she is spoiled, but seems more oblivious. SHE is the one that wants Tiana to cater the party, while yes she’s using her Daddy’s money but he doesn’t deserve the credit for hiring Tiana. While she is spoiled and at times oblivious to others struggles, she doesn’t impose her wants on others nor let her wants supersede someone else’s needs (putting off courting to give Tiana a new costume, giving up her Princess dream to get Tiana back to human)
Also, Tiana’s mom is a seamstress as her job. Mr LeBouf is her best customer as he is always commissioning new dresses for Lottie. In deleted scenes on the dvd we see her mom using Tiana as essentially a mannequin, making a dress for Lottie while Tiana is making the beignets for the party. The mom is getting older and her hands sore easily, Tiana saying her mom can retire when her restaurant takes off. The mom saying she won’t retire until she does one last job, Tiana’s wedding dress and three sets of baby clothes.

It’s a real shame because I’ll never look at a 3D film with the same level of amazement that I look at old 2D film. One of my favorites is Sleeping Beauty every background of the entire film was painted by hand. Someone had to go in with the tiniest paint bushes and paint every little leave all the little details in the trees all the shadows all the light ray. It’s not like 3D where they can just copy and paste a tree asset move it somewhere else to make a forest. In Sleeping Beauty they drew each one individually by hand. Also in 3D films when making crowds they just take the same models place them in five different spots then take that asset and change their colors and do the same thing. Meanwhile look at the opening of Sleeping Beauty in a crowd full of people no two are identical and they all move different. They had to go in frame by frame and draw different people doing different gestures one frame at a time. As someone who loves drawing and painting I will never look at a 3D film with the same amount of amazement I look at a 2D film. I think that’s also why some 2D films from say 50 years ago still hold up because it will never stop being impressive what humans were capable of making with just pencils paper and lots of paint. While an animated movie from like 20 years ago probably aged badly as the technology has improved and all studios want the movies to look more and more realistic.

But it shouldn't be as successful anymore because it's all companies do now, CGI was amazing in the 90s and early 2000s, but now it's the most commonly used method of animation and people shouldn't have a bias towards 2D movies anymore.

"Voodoo, or more specifically Voudoun is a specific religion found in Haiti and in the southern US, made from a mix of the religions of various African diaspora peoples syncretized with folk Catholicism. In the religion, people perform rituals and give offering to spiritual beings called the Loa,or specific ancestral spirits and “gods” from Africa, and develop relationships with them , often via semi voluntary spirit possession practices
People who practice Voudoun do often practice magic, some of which may be sorted as “witchcraft”
However there is a great deal more to Voudoun than just the magical practices which sometimes go along with the religion, which get popularized and butchered by ignorant media representations to the public, and taken as “Voodoo”
Saying Voudoun is somehow intrinsically about witchcraft, is like saying Catholicism is a wine tasters club where crackers are served.
You would be missing most of the point

Yeah she's a little detached from reality but she has a heart of gold - she basically helped Tiana achieve her dreams and never got angry at Tiana for her relationship with Naveen. I don't really understand why you don't like her but hey you do you.

The Princess and the Frog is a family movie in the truest sense, because it entertains both young and old. The message of the movie is as humble as it is subtle: Money corrupts, but it's up to you whether you let it. As you explained, you have every archetype related to wealth and poverty present in this film, and for the most part they all play a role, and it's easy to find someone you relate to, ironically enough. It's got depth too, and isn't JUST a parody of the genre like Megamind (also a pretty good movie imo).
This movie always stuck out to me as an American, a historian, and a man of faith. The only princess movie I actually would want to watch again (I was close friends with a Disney girl in elementary school). The prince's monolog about "not knowing how to do anything" especially got my attention. I would be considered "upper class" in that my family's income could be considered top 10%, although I have siblings. No farraris or pools. I struggle to get those kinds of words out too, because I risk spending ignorant or boastful, because now I do live alone, finishing up school in a scary world. My parents raised me well, but they weren't going to make me struggle to teach me lessons. Some got a big headstart, and it's best to know how and work hard. The prince got it in the, but his servant didn't.

@sewer~rat That is why Lottie is there. That's why Tiana was "invited " to the party to work and not as an actual guest because in this early 1900s time period a rich White family from the south would not have invited their poor Black employees to a function. No matter how nice Lottie's family is, society wouldn't have allowed it. But it was cute to think that Tiana would have been invited otherwise but that's why the story was written that way. The 2 Brothers who own the building Tiana wants to buy a clearly bigots but Lottie and her dad are the 2 nicest people in town. Eve nicer than the other Black people.

Something I don't see mentioned is the foiling that goes on in this movie. Lotte is all but a princess. She is spoiled to the point that she doesn't understand the struggles of those less privileged first-hand. She does live on a much closer societal level however so she does express signs of empathy. She seems to be oblivious of the differences between them which can be very insensitive but also see them on a much more level footing as human beings. She considers Tianna her best friend and while she can be selfish she does show Tianna support that she doesn't have to/wouldn't if she were fully selfish. Also for the time period and situations she is very progressive in her relationships. She is very assertive and proactive to reach her goal to marry a prince. Due to this she can be annoying but also is the one directing her father to help her achieve this through his resources. Navine is her counterpart. He is a real prince and is so spoiled he doesn't want to do anything but hedinistically live in the moment. His parents want the future for him that Lotte desires for herself but he wants to avoid it at all costs. Due to this he is cut off and learns to sympathize with feeling helpless but is driven ot get what he had back without compromise. He plans to marry into wealth simply to abandon his responsibilities for it and live loose again. He is very much like Dr. Facilier in his goals at this point. He clearly sees everyone around him as a toy or tool to be used by him and this is most clear in Lawrence. Lawrence is his one companion and the foil to Tianna. He has been around Navine his whole life and played a hired help role like Tianna to Lotte, but navine treats him like trash and sees him as just "the help." Unlike Tianna, this hardship gets enough to Lawrence for him to seek vengeance through an easy way out. Both of them don't belive in magic at first but wind up embracing it. Lotte wishes on the evening star and ultimately convinces Tianna to give it a try too. She also unwittingly sets up Tianna to become a frog through her act of kindness. She takes Tianna to her room to clean up from the accident and let's her have one of her princess dresses to wear. Lawrence at first feels the Shadow Man is a scam but Navine essentially orders him to go into the parlor both putting them in postion for Facilier's magic and keeping Lawrence in enough of an irritated state to accept the offer of vengeance. Lawrence becomes the villains assistant and remains a secondary character while Tianna embraces the wishing star in what she believes is its offering through the frog prince. While Tianna and Navine set off on their adventure a parallel B plot occurs with Lotte and a disguised Lawernce. Navine and Tianna quickly get past the liar revealed thing and genuinely bond through their quest. Lotte and Lawrence however interact in a way that is still built on lies and shallow motives until until the two couples again cross paths. The splitting of the two couples is set in motion by Docter Faciler who actively sought out his stooges, guides lawarnce to seek out what he wants for his own perosnal benefit and again is what lead to Tianna/Navine in going off on their quest. Mama Odie passively waits for them to arrive, selflessly attempts to teach them the lesson about prioritizing what they need over what they want and sets them on the path to rendevue with the other couple. Navine and Tianna both decide to stay together no matter what sacrifices that would mean to them individually. In the opposite, Lawrence breaks down as a coward when the truth is revealed and Lotte turns on him, attempting to help her best friend without any quid pro quo, despite Navines own selfless offer to make her dream still come true. She fails to help but the two still accept their fate as long as they can be together while Lawrence is clearly not in a good place and lotte still wants a Prince, she is just less horse blinded toward it. There are also a lot of little details i wont go into that help indicate this unique counterpart situation in the movie as well. It is very interesting to me since it clearly shows the kind of careful structure they made in telling the story. Since this does subvert a lot of roles it is interesting how they did this duality plot planning to support and emphasize it. Both plots have related characters paired in a rags and riches meeting together style but do to the very different personalities and circumstances they are in, they wind up VERY contrasting by comparison. Dr. Faciler mentions being royalty on his mothers side. This is a refrence to his mother being a New Orleans Vudu Queen and the scrapped plot point that Mama Odie was actually her. I like that they removed this since it would only complicate the counterpart relationship of rhe two. The fact they are aware of each other but never do much to interact or show any investment in each other' existance keeps the focus where it needs to be. If they were parent and child, it would imply more about the motives to thier roles in the story and distract from the frogs story. It is similar in how they had this whole B plot with Lawrence and Lotte as a subtle bizzaro reflection of what was going on with the main characters but kept the focus mostly on them. All this supporting detail kept as just that to the main story makes it feel much fuller upon deeper thought without breaking focus on what is most important in the movie.

It's unfair for you to imply people didn't watch Princess and The Frog because it's 2D and instead chose to watch Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After and Despicable Me because they're 3D when in reality people chose those films because 2/3 of them are sequels to already well established franchises that have been around for years.
If you're a big fan of Toy Story, and you 're in a situation where you can can only see one or two movies a year, you're going to pick Toy Story 3 over anything else.
It's also important to take into consideration the film itself.
Princess and the Frog is a Princess movie, which has a narrower appeal. Young boys (as an example, not as a rule) are often less interested in these kind of movies, where something like Toy Story or Shrek are usually seen as more unisex family films and thus will have a larger audience of people interested in viewing them. And that's not even getting into the sad fact that many people actively chose not to watch Princess and the Frog because it had a black female lead character, as well as early development issues with the film that also made it less appealing to black viewers, further shrinking the amount of people who will view it.
Princess and the Frog was a great film and holds a special place in my heart as it was in theaters when I had first entered college for animation, with my classmates and I all going to watch it and using it as inspiration for many of our class projects; and while you are correct that consumers made it clear that they want 3D films, to say "people didn't watch it because people just like 3D better" and ignore all the other important factors around the film's development and release that would attribute to being less popular over all just isn't looking at the whole picture.

I’ve avoided rewatching it because I don’t want the negative connotations of “the death of 2-D” to marr my memory of when I first watched it with my brother. I really want a sequel where it’s just about family affection and connections. Maybe after the Tiana show or is an arc in the show. Tiana and Naveen are married and running their restaurant, everything’s perfect, and it’s happily ever after… for Tiana. Naveen sees how close she is to her mom and how much they loved her dad, then starts to miss his parents and gets a bit homesick. Tiana sees this and wants to support him. So they either save up for the trip or Lotte begs her dad to pay for it. And Lotte would probably ask to join them. They meet his parents but they’re not happy to see him at all, and it doesn’t help that he’s not married to someone who’s wealthy. Naveen tries to bond with them but they think he’s just there to sneak his way into leeching off them, so they reprimand him for being an expensive spoiled brat. Naveen is distraught but Tiana realizes that they failed him in how they raised him and confronts them about it. Stubborn spoiled rich step parents being stubborn spoiled rich step parents, kick them out after landing one last “you’re a disgrace and a waste of money” Lotte, witnessing all this starts to rethink her whole life and gets a reality check, Tiana comforts Naveen, and Naveen sees that he doesn’t need the approval of his parents who where barely there for him and realizes Tiana is more than enough.
