I think it’s important to note that Megamind didn’t assume Bernard’s identity to get with Roxanne - he just didn’t want to be caught mourning Metroman in his fluffy jammies. And I think he continued to hang out with her because he never really had a friend outside of Minion and . . . whatever Metroman was to him. Falling in love was a complete accident.

There’s something that I always thought was interesting with this movie. When Roxanne is with Megamind in the beginning, when she was “in danger” and waiting for Metroman to save her, she wasn’t scared in the slightest. However, when she was with Hal, she was genuinely terrified of what he would do. It just goes to show how the “Nice Guy” Syndrome is a real problem for anyone.

I saw that scene with megamind and roxanne as she wasn't afraid because she's been kidnapped by him many times and she knew that metroman would beat him and that megamind was a predictable idiot who is most likely reusing some of his past traps.
Hal however was someone/something "new". something that she knew megamind had been working on but not titan's purpose she didn't know if he was good or bad but since megamind was working on him he was probably bad. also his actions seemed unpredictable (one moment flowers the next highway dropping) she only found out when she was on the tower that he was hal.

    • @WynneL
      @WynneL 2 года назад +898

Exactly. It even shows their mindsets in a way--Titan tosses her around like a rag doll with no concern for her safety or terror; there's a creepy sense of "I could coerce her to touch me if she's afraid she'll fall to her death...😏" while Megamind puts her in a flying vehicle immediately. Care for her safety, and as minimal terror as possible. Because he values her as a person, and values her feelings, while Titan only values her as far as he can bully her into submission.

And it's part of the game. Metroman won't bother with Megamind without a hostage and who better than the reporter who will put it on the news?
The traps etc are to give the illusion of danger FOR METROMAN, for him to treat this more urgently. They are all out of range to hurt her.
Even capturing her his concern is her safety (putting her into a safety car) because hurting her is not the plan. He has no desire to hurt her and they both know it. Hence why she snaps back at him because she feels safe enough to do it.

Megamind only captured her because he wanted to draw out metroman. He was putting on a facade which the public percieved as scary so that metroman would react. He just wanted another showdown with metroman, he wasn't actually looking to hurt anyone.

      @seigeengine 2 года назад +315

Basically Megamind is a good guy pretending to be a bad guy. Nothing he does in the movie is really directly harmful to anyone other then Metroman, and he didn't expect it to work in the first place.
In contrast, Metroman is an ordinary guy pretending to be a good guy. He fills the role, but he doesn't really feel the call to do good. He just wants to be left alone to live his life, mostly.
Then Titan is just a bad guy, and not a power-corrupts bad guy, he was bad from the beginning, but lacked the power to fully act on it.
Roxanne basically understands that Megamind isn't actually a threat. He's not going to kill her, or basically anyone else. Until she thinks he killed Metroman, it wasn't even serious.

Even in that tower scene where she's trying to explain to him what's going on, she never once raises her voice or gets impatient with him, it's him who gets worked up with her. And that's such a perfect depiction of real life. I think part of what makes Hal such a brilliant portrayal of the "nice guy" problem is how Megamind behaves in contrast. He pays attention to Roxanne and tries to make her happy. Her, specifically, as an individual. For example, he cleans up the whole city because he notices how sad she is to see the park covered in litter.
By contrast, Hal doesn't try to get to know Roxanne. He sees her as a girl he likes and that's all. "I didn't know what kind of flowers you liked, so I got you all of them." "Girls don't like bouncy houses, they like clowns!" Et cetera. Roxanne could have been literally any woman he thought was attractive and he would have behaved exactly the same way.
At the end of the day, Megamind sees Roxanne as an individual and develops an honest connection to her, while Hal fails to see Roxanne as a person - so not only does he not try to understand her, but he is completely flabbergasted when she doesn't react positively to the reveal that he's got superpowers. For someone who has known her for years, you'd think Hal would understand her basic personality.

Seriously, who would hire him when everyone's already a little scared of him? "Evil" was just him filling the only available niche and he doesn't leave it until the end, when society "allowed" him to.
As for Hal, I don't think it's a "facade". I think he truly believes he's a "nice guy" and is simply doing what he believes "nice guys" are supposed to do. As soon as he gets powers, he uses them to try to get what he believes he's "owed" for being "nice".

      1. He desired a challenge. Fighting Megamind wasn't a challenge. For his sanity, he needed something his powers wouldn't just make easy. That's why he chose music. Super speed and flight wouldn't make the guitar any easier.
      2. He knew Megamind wasn't a real threat to the citizen.
      3. Megamind wasn't interested in being evil. Megamind was only interested in having a purpose. Once Metroman left, he knew Megamind would eventually take his place as Metro City's guardian. After all, the only part of super villainy that Megamind truly liked was the rivalry aspect.

When things don't go as he wants them to he becomes violent (he's beating the car, and really aggressively). I think the reason why Titan was such a horrible villain is because you can actually envision a "nice" guy actually do such horrible things if they get power. And he is so violent, don't take no as an answer, and thinks he is the one that deserves the girl, even before Hal got his powers which a lot of people have met before. We all know someone as a "nice" guy or girl that thinks they are entitled to everything or any person they are nice to. He's a villain we have in our everyday lives, like Umbridge, which is why we can hate them so much.
Edit: Lol there’s a bit of miscommunication but when I said Hal was a horrible villain, I meant that he’s a well written villain and what made him a good character because he’s a realistic, horrible person that we have all seen and met before.

More because of a long time understanding of who he was than because of anything to do with Hal.
It needed maybe another ten minutes or so to flesh out the process of her moving on from his lie and him earning her trust, but everything they needed for that moment was in it from the very first moment they met, long before the events of the movie, it was already part of their characters and their chemistry.

And what Hal was was pretty classic entitlement. It's spelled out pretty clearly with "space dad" telling him that if he rescues her she'll be his. That sets up the entitlement. That clarifies the terms he's thinking of the situation in. Honestly, if I'm going to blame Megamind for one thing, it would be giving Hal that bit of advice, because that is really, really wrong. The good guys are genuinely "good" and are the actual nice ones.

He acted like Roxanne was obligated to him and continually kept suggesting creepy af shit they could do (such as a "party" at his place where it'd be the two of them and a wedding photographer) like she was destined to be his. When she finally rejected him outright after his crazy af flying stunts, what did he do? Decided to become an actual bad guy fully by destroying the city, terrorizing the people, and becoming a genuine unhinged psychopath...especially after Megamind revealed that HE was the one that stole Roxanne's heart because Megamind was under the assumption that he'd adhere to the Hero/Villain showmanship banter and fighting as opposed to going full blazed psychopath.
Megamind, despite starting off "bad" was genuinely an actual "good" guy who took an introspective approach when Roxanne rejected him, and what did he do? He turned himself in to the police and didn't throw a tantrum because he knew he went about things all wrong. And then he turned around again and did some good by saving Roxanne as well as Metro City. Roxane getting with Megamind is perfectly fine to me. Mostly because he never expected her to forgive him for his deceptions, he just couldn't stand by while she was in danger and it was her choice to forgive him and move forward from there. His plan even was to give Metroman all the credit, and I don't think Minion revealing the ruse to Roxane was part of the plan either, that was probably Minion's decision. In essence he is rewarded for being a truly good person rather than superficially good like Hal was, and while it may be more realistic that Roxane should have given him a bit more time to re-earn her trust, given that we didn't get any more movies it does keep things nicely wrapped up with no hanging loose ends.

He suffered so much, as much as that doesn´t excuse bad behavior, he was in the process of learning and growing and had so much potential and she could see that. She knows she has probably wronged people before. None of us a great all the time. When we don´t give second chances ever I feel we also fall into the nice guy trap, where we think we are always good and deserve the best but never account to other people´s journeys.

I think it's fine that Roxanne falls for him because, even though he lied to her, he made up for it in ways beyond saving her. He actively wants her to be happy, wants her to be safe. There's this idea that people need to be properly "punished" for any perceived wrongdoing regardless of their circumstances or their attempts at apology, and that forgiveness should only come after an arbitrarily set amount of groveling. As if people need to suffer and stew in their misery before they're allowed any redemption.
At the end of the day, Roxanne liked Megamind as a person and chose to be with him. He was a good person who made a mistake. He didn't need to be punished any further.

Megamind scoops her up, keeps her situated in his lair, and all she really has to do is sit and wait until Metroman arrives on the scene to rescue her. In comparison, she has no idea what Hal's actual motives are, nor what he plans to do with her, which makes him so much more terrifying to her, because she has no time to relax or prepare for a worst case scenario, she essentially just has to pray that she makes it out of the situation alive, something she's never had to do with Megamind

Note: sorry my comment was getting long and I was getting tired, I'll finish writing my example later
You're right that books and nerdy things are nebulous, I was trying to make the point that the audience probably knows/cares more about her personality than Hal, but it was a bad example.
But judging by Hal's attitude and his actions throughout the film, he acts like someone who doesn't want to know who she is as a person, and is simply trying to win over an object. For example,
Roxanne seems to be generally open about herself, even to strangers or people who she has no romantic interest in. Remember how Roxanne had a negative opinion of Bernard at the beginning of the film in the museum elevator (she thought he was boring, similar to the way she felt about Hal). But that changes after Megamind enters Bernard's body and says something meaningful/profound (in Roxanne's opinion at least).
I know we saw Roxanne being uninterested in Hal even in the beginning of the movie, but that's because he's never talking about her interests (which he can just ask if he doesn't know) or even his own passions (which he doesn't have any and he should really get some). I wouldn't say "Want to come to my bouncy castle party" falls under either of these categories. He's always saying boring or borderline offensive things (to Roxanne's intelligence).
I know we have to make assumptions about how Roxanne treated Hal before the film, but based on Roxanne's personality and Hal's personality, I'd rather assume that Roxanne probably did give Hal a chance to be friends in the beginning, but Hal was too focused on getting in Roxanne's pants to actually get to know her.

He's selfish, but I think that his leaving the superhero role to let Megamind do his own thing subtly showed a lot about their relationship. Metroman trusts Megamind to do the right thing, because he saw that Megamind isn't inherently evil and that he wouldn't actually try to hurt anyone. Seeing Megamind's goodness was more apparent and impactful when it was Roxanne, but Metroman's realization of it was just as important because it led to Megamind being able to truely show who he was without a superhero confining him to the role of villain.

Now that I'm older, I can see the logic behind Metroman's faked suicide albeit it's not framed to be a good thing either. Metroman, after dealing with Megamind enough to get to know him well, realized that Megamind is nowhere near evil enough to actually be of serious harm to the city so he knew that it was only a matter of time before Megamind grew out of his upbringing to realize who he truly was. However, he didn't expect Megamind to attempt relapsing so hard, and he especially didn't expect the creation of Titan, a person who is evil enough to be of serious harm to the city. In other words, Metroman had a plan that backfired extremely hard, but in the long run ended up working but not in the way he intended.

Bernard just happened to be a coincidence to hide the "moronic supervillain" filter from her and see a different side of him. Of course it was wrong but I feel the message was that, in the end, Megamind learns from this (the first real bad thing he did intentionally) and after watching her hurt he never did it again. • @brianna6377

Perspective matters too. Maybe Megamind will tell her one day, but at the time of their fight she had zero insight into why he would pretend to be someone else and approach her.
Megamind himself never apologized for the evil he committed. And at the time of the fight, she had just figured out that he is still plotting something and had seen the consequences of that plot firsthand. Whether intentional or not, Megamind's actions had put her life in danger. Most especially, she is in the midst of a huge betrayal of trust. She believed this person to be someone he was not, and she has had zero time to process it when he runs after her in the rain.
One thing I do dislike about the film is the blame game Megamind plays with her in the battle at the end. He implies that it's her fault he lost the crucial item needed to defeat Titan because she dumped him in the rain. But that series of events played out the way they did BECAUSE he chose to continue the lie.

    • @Grac3AndP3ac3
      @Grac3AndP3ac3 Год назад +43

@Brianna I don't think he was playing a blame game with Roxanne there though. Remember Megamind is bad at social skills due to never being around people so sometimes what he says may come off wrong. But he even said that he lost it the night she dumped him, not that he lost it because she dumped him. He did add the whole alone in the rain (and even started to get sad still clearly feeling the heartbreak of it) and then asked if she ever looked back (the little hope he had of them getting back together) after she said no he dropped it (it was clear he wanted to talk about it and was testing the waters. Same way he was when he asked Roxanne if she would like him if he wasn't normal and had the skin completion of a primary color) but when he dropped it I think he also tried to pretend it didn't happen to cope the best way he can. But after the reveal that Metro was alive and wouldn't do anything he lost hope. He didn't see himself as a good guy and truly believed he was a villian and didn't deserve happiness, so of course when his last hope of getting the hero back backfired he gave up. He was still just a villian without a hero and he would never get the girl he was inlove with because villians don't get to be happy, which is why he turned himself in. But then seeing Roxanne in trouble he went to save her, he still clearly played into the villain part saying "oh your a villian alright, but not a super one" and then came out with a big presentation yelling how presentation makes the difference. He only did that to save the woman he loves, it was in his final moments he realized because of Roxanne belief in him that he can be the good guy and I believe that dawned on him when he chased Titan away. I believe so because he was hesitant to tale Roxanne's hand, it was almost like he just realize he could get the girl and if he could he could also be the good guy

My last relationship felt very transactional though neither of us saw it then, and I'm glad I've figured this whole nice vs. good thing out to a degree now as opposed to much later, and it's thanks to you that I now know what it's called and what comprises it to make it easier to acknowledge what a relationship is for future.

Ive always loved that at the end, Roxanne kisses him on the cheek. It’s a step below when they kissed at the restaurant.
It said to me that “this is the happy ending for the “”kids movie””” but they’re also building their relationship back up. They don’t just pick up where they left it.

Yeah, this is a show don’t tell thing of exactly what the blonde guy (first time watching this channel, don’t know the names) was saying. The attraction and relationship is still there, and she’s potentially even playing it up for the crowd as some famous people relationships do, but it’s a subtle sign that things clearly aren’t what they were while still having hope that they can move past it and get there one day.

I love that too, since it shows Roxanne's forgiveness, but it shows how forgiveness and trust are not the same thing, trust is built over time and when its broken it can be forgiven, but it doesn't mean that the trust is back.

And even though there’s clear, mutual attraction from their very first scene together, they’ve just as clearly never acted on it. There are boundaries there, which get shattered (first due to Metro Man’s “death”, then Meg’s deception), but with the hopeful note that they can be rebuilt, and stronger.

My life was pretty much like that too. Wether it was to be a friend or whatever else... people ' did ' not ' even ' let ' me.
Until I grew tired of it all and suddenly stepped back of it. Back to where it all began. My undisputed comfort zone. I do not plan to ever leave it again and I doubt there exists anything in life that can make me.
      Am I happy now?
      Glad?
      Fulfilled?
      Absolute happyness?
      I am... content.
      It is not perfect.
But it does not have to be.
      We all know this feeling.
Asking ourself _" WHAT IF I WOULD TRY JUST THIS ONCE... "_
But this are just this dumb noises of our primitive brains I guess.
Or old dreams and hopes or behaviours, knocking on our doors even long after we threw them out.
      Is it the perfect lifestyle?
I dunno. But I always see people trying to shape & control me.
      They do not want *ME.*
      They want my _"services"._
      It is tiring really.
So content to live my life with relative loneliness but also this god damn, sexy peace of mind that I would not trade for anything else in the world.

It's brilliant how until Hal becomes Titan, the audience only sees him as a comic relief character. The whole Nice guy syndrome isn't directly addressed and it's very subtle and that's how it's like in real life. It's hard to detect nice guy syndrome especially in yourself. When he becomes the villain it's obvious and rewatching you pick up on all the little things. But his twist villain is amazingly written

I agree. I think even "nice guys" and self-styled incels deserve empathy at the very least, because at the core of their problems, they're hurting and feel alone. They need to be able to find their self-worth beyond chasing a relationship, because you have to love yourself before others can love you.

I totally agree! Just because you changed your mind from how you thought in the past, doesn’t mean you can’t speak out on it later. People change, people grow. This isn’t something to hide and feel shame towards. Its something that needs to be talked about. Then less well meaning men will go through this life experience.

No, they will feed on the delusion no matter if you show simpathy towards them. The don't deserve any emphaty .
The men that changed their behaviour was because they decides to do so. To do introspection and Made eforts to be better.
What you are suggesting is the equivalent of saying a wife-beater will change if she continues giving love to him.

Something I noticed in high school when it came to "nice guys" was they'd overact to couples having a simple argument or disagreement, then jump to the conclusion that the girl was being abused. Like, my friend and her then boyfriend were having a small argument, and some guy who had a crush on her jumped in and felt the need to "protect" her. He started yelling at her boyfriend and telling her to leave him because he "wasn't any good for her". They ended up breaking up about a year later, but he never abused her. Their split was amicable. They just wanted different things in life. But "nice guys" will pounce on the tiniest thing and use it to their advantage, as if they would never have disagreements with their partner.

One time in college, there was this guy I knew and we had become acquaintances based on a game we both really liked. He asked me from the get go “Do you have a boyfriend?” and I said yes, naively thinking he just wanted to be my friend. Every conversation after that he would always ask if he and I were still together to the point where it was the immediate thing he would say, even during brief interactions.
I stopped talking to him, but he would still somehow manage to find me during my breaks and try to strike up a conversation. He would also conveniently be in the same area my boyfriend and I would hang out during our breaks and I would always feel his stares and would catch him staring *intensely* at us.
One day I was having a pretty bad panic attack (not related to my boyfriend whatsoever) in the cafeteria area. I was crying my eyes out and lo and behold, he popped out of nowhere. He started rubbing my back and giving me tissues and immediately said “Who did this to you? Did your boyfriend hurt you?!” as if he had already formulated a story without even asking me what happened. He then proceeded to talk about how he’s there for me and how he would never hurt me Blah Blah Blah. I couldn’t even talk because 1.) I was in the middle of my panic attack and I usually can’t speak through choked tears. 2.) We were not close AT ALL and him touching me made me incredibly uncomfortable. 3.) There were onlookers and I didn’t want to scream at this guy to leave me alone because I was so embarrassed and uncomfortable as it were. 4.) I was confused as all hell as to why this fool even thought this was about my boyfriend. The whole thing just blindsided me and I never wanted to punch someone so hard tbqh.
