I’d be curious to know if that is them just trying to fit in, or if they have actually picked up on the “language” of their fellow birds. Most birds are more intelligent than we give them credit for. So maybe they are able to figure out what the various chirps are for and apply them?

My neighbor had a guard goose in a big city. My friends thought I was stupid for liking the idea. That all stopped when I convinced one of them to go up to the fence. They were surprised when it came over the fence as they somehow forgot geese can fly.

I kept geese for a while. They are a lot of fun, and have strong personalities and are more intelligent than chickens. Awesome creatures! They can actually be proper pets as well as farmyard animals. Very loyal and territorial, they are indeed good for security. Extremely aggressive when they or their home is perceived to be under threat.
@Eze&Yare Dominguez Yes Much Like Ducks, Geese Imprint Other Birds, And will Follow Them Around, Every Goose And Every Duck Needs A Friend. (but if it is a pet, that you handle/pet/hand feed often, it might actually imprint on you, as they sometimes make friends with humans) Although They Still Need A Friend For When Their Human Is Not Around! lol I Love Ducks, But I Haven't Had Much Interaction With Geese, Someday I'll Likely Change That.
I had a really bad day and this video turned it around completely along with the comments. Pure gold. Larry is the man! Life can resume as normal now ....
Life is full of ups and downs just know you aren't alone and it does get better. I find animal videos help a ton when feeling down and out but that's just me. Best wishes from me to you and that is a lovely profile pic, looks like my Kona bones.
In all seriousness, geese are actually pretty harmless to large animals. There main adaptation is intimidation. If you are a large animal acting agressive towards a goose and it juat stands it's ground and/or makes this weird honking noise, you are gonna wonder "It's not running away. Why isn't this thing afraid of me? Maybe it's dangerous!"
I used to have 2 China geese (Hansel and Gretel) and they were great. I got them as full grown geese and they took awhile to get used to my family but were good after a while and would even follow me around the yard. The geese were good guard geese and they ran freely around the house. A funny thing about these geese, they were barn yard geese and one day my wife and kids went down the drive way to a pond to go for a swim. The geese followed us as I called to them and when we jumped into the water for a swim they would not go in the water. I do not think they ever got to swim in water before so I had to force then into the water and once in the water they loved it, swimming around with us. When it was time to go home I called them and they followed. Next time we went to the pond the geese went right into the water. I really enjoyed these animals.
When I was a teen my parents had backyard chickens. And we had a duck to do basically the same thing. The duck would alert when there was any sort of predator and our border collie who was super protective of the flock would jump in to action and start herding the chickens under their coop. This wasn’t even a trained behavior for either our duck or our dog lol
“Larry’s effective against aerial predators.” Due to non-compliance, the LARRY-209 demonstrates by launching two ground to air missiles from beneath his outstretched feathers, obliterating the threat.
Yeah but their attack stats are pretty low Swan is the superior version of a geese, having the necessary attack stat to scare off predators even if they get through their high intimidation
@@lakshyapatel3842 True, but I find that their natural aesthetics level paired with their abysmal stealth stat passively draws predators towards them, thus increasing the likelihood of attack.
I love your morals. It's so important to care for animals that are under our protection to the best of our abilities. Thank you for sharing the pros and cons.
In ancient Rome they had a large flock of geese maintained by the city that were used to serve as an early warning system for the city, to warn against invaders. The geese were sacred to the Godess Juno and it was a capital offense to harm them. Just a bit of history, enjoyed your videos.
I would have given anything for my childhood neighbors to have had geese instead of a rooster. Right on time, every single morning he would crow and crow and crow at 5:00 AM. Even from 6 acres away and on the opposite side of the house, that bugger would wake me up.
We've employed this model - heavily fortified mobile coop, electric poultry net, chickens and goose (Toulouse goose named Bruce) for a year. It has worked well for us. We have hawks and coyotes around. We've lost no chickens and Bruce's eggs this Spring have been a nice bonus.
Where I am from a lot of Portuguese use geese as guards, they are much more effective than any dog and between the nasty bite they give along with the wing beatings they are a formidable front!
@@vangogo6819 Geese only have intimidation as their defensive tool, they have terrible damage options and can't properly hurt an attacker or predators if intimidation doesn't work. They do have their pros and cons.
@@vangogo6819 Geese are pretty good at intimidation. They can intimidate animals triple their size even. But if a human comes around, they're doomed. Their neck is vulnerable and grabbing geese by their necks is super easy and isn't hard when they literally charge at you with their head straight at you.
There was an article in a California farm magazine about cotton farms using geese to eat weeds after irrigation when tractors couldn’t get in. They left the cotton alone and turned weeds into fertilizer.

My grandparents farmed up until the late 60's. My grampa had a "guard goose".... it would guard my mom from my dad when he would come over to visit (while they were dating). The goose chased my dad into the house one time and wouldn't let dad out of the corner- so when grampa put it outside....it went out to my dad's car and proceeded to eat the valve stems off of the tires! They also had a goat that wasn't too fond of dad either, haha. My dad and my uncle worked on the farm (dairy farm) bailing hay at my grandparents place...that's how my parents met,.
I don't farm and will never raise chickens or geese. I very rarely even eat eggs. Yet I watched your video and enjoyed it. Thanks and best of luck to you (all).
I have turkeys and they do the same thing - watching for eagles and hawks around me during the day, making sounds. The two males wait to go to bed last at night, too. They have great personality as well - we hand fed them so they’re super nice. Noise wise, they are gobbling throughout the day at delivery drivers or if you drive up to the house - but besides that, they’re quiet. I haven’t lost anyone to predators in 3 years - and we definitely have aerial predators around.
I'm 71 and when I was a kid - we lived in the country - my folks got a couple geese. They were already grown - and one decided he didn't like me very much, so every time I went outside, he'd head right at me, would grab my shirt in his beak, and flog me with his wings! Doggone! that hurt!! It happened several times and I got tired of having to sneak outside so I marched outside and he headed at me again, only this time I reached out and grabbed his neck with both hands and swung him around my head a few times and then let go. He flew through the air and when he hit the ground, he just laid there wondering what the heck happened. After that, when I'd go outside he'd look at me and run the other way! Ha. Survival of the fittest, 8-year-old kid style.
You were sure brave! I remember my four younger sisters being chased by a goose when I was 12. We were too scared to fight back. We just ran away back into the house.
When i was little we had a guard goose for our chickens too! Her name was Gurdy. She used to chase me to the bus every morning hahaa I loved her anyway.
My neighbor growing up had geese, they were mean and tough. One of them in particular used to get into throw down fights with my chihuahua. As far as I remember, they were even in wins and losses.
When I was little my step Dad had ducks geese and chickens. The primary male goose was the sentinel. Larry owns it. "Larry eats about 2 pounds of food a day," you earn it Larry. Good goose. 👍
Very cool, very cool. It was so cool to see Larry herding the hens into the coop and walk up the ramp behind them. Seems to me he knows he has a job to do. Maybe Larry is fulfilling his male responsibilities by protecting the females. A female goose might be more interested in laying eggs than protecting the hens. Thanks for the fun video.
Awww...I like how he takes the chickens safety seriously, saying that he is their guardian and wants to do anything he can to protect them bc any loss is painful.
Of course. Life is rare, and theirs depend on you. And they're peaceful lottle happy creatures, they're not carnivores, so they dont go around killing.
Geese are super protective animals, but that isn't always a good thing. Keep little kids away from them because they can be quite mean. This is probably why they're so good at protection.
My grandpa used to give me a shock stick when i was little to scare off the ducks and geese that would chase me on my walks 😂 they can be nasty mean sometimes
Geese can be extremely affectionate if they imprint on or bond with you, they can also be socialized and will only be aggressive during breeding season, then males will kill a bitch 😂

My father was in the army before and during WW 2 and they used geese as guards and early warning. They are tough and if raised with any animals will be protective.
I’ve heard about a guard goose before, my father had mentioned this when I was young. They can be aggressive like Larry and territorial protecting the property and like Larry keep tabs on his flock. He would know as he used to raise chickens, ducks and racing pigeons. And have you ever gotten a Canada Goose ticked off at you? Watch out!
Fort Collins gets overrun with Canadian geese in winter (probably in no small part to the fact that city ordinances require lawns to be watered, so there's space to not only congregate but also graze). They certainly make things dicey. I was nearly run over by a pair of them that were brawling with each other and tumbled into the sidewalk.
i honestly think this was one of the first (years ago) homesteading/hobby farming/etc videos i was ever recommended by the algorithm and gosh, i couldn't be more thankful.
You’ve got a more efficient predator protection system calling overhead. Crows and blue jays are who protect my pigeons when they are out. Corvids relentlessly harass birds of prey in their territory and birds of prey will avoid them at all costs. I started by using a crow call and crow decoys to scare away predators when I see them and this attracted wild crows and jays which I started feeding and encouraged to hang around. My pigeons quickly learned the language of these birds and now respond accordingly every time the crows or jays sound the alarm.
That’s really interesting that’s got me thinking that’s why I don’t see many hawks or anything near my poultry cuz we’ve got tons on jays and crows living near us.
Yes, we feed our local crows and scissor tails and blue Jay's as payment for their guard duties lol. They actually chased off an eagle yesterday who was trying to get a local egret (white cow bird)
I love how this man who was giving advice to other farmers has now a comment section full of weird/funny comments from millenials who got this video recommendation Imagine him reading the comments and people talking about LARRY like he’s a sheriff

Something interesting is he sounds like a chicken. His honking sounds like he's trying to imitate a chicken. My friend has a duck that was raised with two geese and the duck sounds like a goose.
I’d be curious to know if that is them just trying to fit in, or if they have actually picked up on the “language” of their fellow birds. Most birds are more intelligent than we give them credit for. So maybe they are able to figure out what the various chirps are for and apply them?

JG if you have no other animals. Get a few. They get lonely.
(but if it is a pet, that you handle/pet/hand feed often, it might actually imprint on you, as they sometimes make friends with humans) Although They Still Need A Friend For When Their Human Is Not Around! lol

Amazing, special connection with your geese family!
What a wholesome story. Thank you for sharing it
Geese are so tasty
I had Chinese geese also. They are great geese to have. Protective of their home and very entertaining to watch.
That's so cool!

Really fascinating! Could that work for chickens, too?
