Brazilian prison uses geese to deter escapes

- Prison breaks are rare in Brazil, but they do happen. One penitentiary in the country now has a unique way of deterring prisoners from escaping - geese. It may sound strange, but the use of the birds as an added layer of security has actually taken off. And biologists say there are good reasons why. Michael Fox has the story from southern Brazil.

Geese honking was how the Romans knew the Gauls were attempting a night attack on the city citadel, early 4th century BC. It’s an old but great trick.
@@chriswren1825 That critical moment where geese👁👁, not Roman sentinels 😬, emerged as the city's saviours……
@@wildlifegardenssydney7492😂
Apparently it didn’t matter, the Gauls sacked the city.
@@ac4185 The night that the geese saved Rome
It all started in the year 390 BC when Rome found itself at odds with a Gallic tribe known as the Senones, led by the fierce warrior Brennus.
On July 18, Rome suffered a crushing defeat in the Battle of Allia, leading to the subsequent Gallic Siege of Rome.
According to Livy and Plutarch, the Gauls managed to infiltrate Rome, primarily due to the Romans' lack of vigilance, except for a single fortress on the Capitoline Hill.
And here is where the geese come into the story.
The Capitoline Hill was the home of the Temple of Juno Moneta, which housed the sacred geese of Juno, the Roman queen of the gods.
In this period of distress, as the Gauls crept up the hill in the dead of night, aiming to silently overtake the fortress, an unlikely source of alarm came not from the Roman guards on duty but from the sacred geese of Juno.
Despite the famine that had forced the Romans to ration their food supply, the sacred geese were well-fed due to their religious significance.
Vigilant and alert, the geese sensed the stealthy intruders and started squawking and flapping their wings wildly.
The noise roused Marcus Manlius Capitolinus, a former consul, who immediately sprung into action.
With his swift response, the Romans were able to repel the invaders, and the Capitoline Hill remained in Roman hands.
The geese's role in preventing the Gauls from overtaking the fortress earned them a privileged position in Roman society.
They were given special attention during festivals and feasts, and golden statues were erected in their honor.
Meanwhile, Marcus Manlius, the defender of the Capitoline Hill, gained great honor and respect among his fellow Romans.
He was often referred to as "the savior of Rome," earning him a place in the annals of Rome's greatest heroes. However, his tale is a story for another day.

the guards: don't say anything else 😎
Guard geese are worth their weight in gold! When we moved to a small farm intruders would visit during the night, previous owner wasn't a nice type so they would steal from him during the wee hours...our solution was to get some guard geese. They are quiet when everything is OK but stir them up and all hell breaks loose. They honk and scream and will attack/bite/beat with their wings if/when necessary and of course, their reputation is well known. One person was bitten on the arms as they attempted to hold a goose and all the while they were being beaten and bruised around the upper body by those huge beating wings. I was able to lift the goose from the situation with not a bite, but it's feathers were well and truly ruffled and the noise from that flock during this whole episode was deafening as the others joined in. That person 'never' went near the geese again and the bruising lasted for more than a week. Geese make good friends too and will always let you know if something is not as it should be.
So you're saying the geese touched him up good, hahaha.
our Geese were the same. Literally people were complaining about pain & still being bruised all over a week after being attacked by our Geese. Literally who in their right minds upsets Geese & then complains they got hurt!

It seems like the geese don't need much of a reason to make noise. Considering how the guard admitted that they have never had an escape attempt but was sure they would "go crazy" if there was an escape attempt, makes me think the geese are more a psychological deterrent than a practical one. Enough times provoking the geese to sound a false alarm and the benefit of the birds would start to wear thin.

yeah honestly perfect choice to sound the alarm LOL The second you're in eyesight in their territory they're obnoxiously honking 80ish decibels to the heavens and everyone to hear that they are currently being forced to be aware of your existence and do not like you 😂😂
The ancient Romans used to have some of these bad boys, geese are credited by the historian Livy for giving the alarm when Gauls invaded northern Italy and their long-lasting role as sentinels earned them a sacred spot next to the goddess Juno; geese for, very strong bonds with their caretakers and are incredibly protective, that is why they’re so good, these fellas’ have been employed for quite a while in prisons and private properties so it’s nice to see a story about them being reported, many people would benefit from owning them for these matters as well as for having a loving pet.
My parents and grandparents all warned me whenever we visited farms in NZ to watch out for the guard geese. At the time the geese were bigger than me so I was scared and clung to the adults legs or hid behind them. Years later, at the ponds in Centennial Park in Sydney we saw lots of them up close. I warned my children to look and not touch and certainly not to bother them. Geese are large birds with so much character. They do need a pond to be happy and have their needs met (at prison). Some ideas. In a central area of the prison (not on the perimeter). The prison could grow most of their salad, fruit and veggies with the fertility from their geese poop. Make and sell compost, with in bed worm farms. With the no dig method of growing there would be no need for metal, or posts (so no concerns about shanks). Prisoners on merit systems could work in the gardens. Learn permaculture and skills too.
Rehabilitation and all natural food? What are they humans or something where is my geese?!
We used to have Geese. They are really territorial & protective which makes them ideal for guarding anything.
Makes sense they are more cost efficient than dogs. Geese are very loud & aggressive when they get upset when something or someone invades their space or upsets them. Their nature is to all attack at the same time.
I've seen our Geese attack & chase. Nobody can outrun Geese because they can run fast & fly. Plus when they are chasing & attacking they will go into buildings, houses, pubs etc.
When our Geese attacked - one would jump on the person's shoulders & peck their head, two two jump up & peck the person's arms & two would peck the person's legs. The rest would follow running, flying at the person & pecking them. The noise they all made was quite deafening.
It makes complete sense why years ago people used to keep them to guard their homes & pubs. Geese can be your best friend or worst enemy because they never forget.
If you ever get surrounded by geese don't make eye contact or any sudden movements or loud noises. Just walk away slowly & quietly & speak very softly out loud. If they were going to attack you they already would of done it
