I had the good fortune of seeing Doug Henning live on Broadway in "The Magic Show" in the 1970s. He was mind-blowing live. I adored him!! I refer to him often, and folks don't know who I'm talking about. Glad to see him honored.
I was just about to comment the same thing.. my aunt and uncle took me there as a child for my birthday and I doubt you recall but there was a point in the show where he called someone up from the audience to check if a box he was using in a trick was solid.. I was the lucky kid who got called up on stage..I remember kicking that box so hard my foot hurt after but it's definitely something I'll always remember
He was the one who introduced me to magic, then Bill Bixby with his short lived show The Magician really locked it in until that Fox special that gave away all the answers. Now it's not magic, it's tricks. And trix are for kids.
I was surprised that Steve said that about himself "unless ....." at the end of the video. I recently turned 60 myself and I remember Doug Henning as a youngster in the mid - 70's and early 80's seeing him on TV.
Thank you for this! I loved Doug Henning's performances in the 70's and until recently didn't know what happened to him. So sad that cancer took him from us so young.
I attended his wedding in Fairfield Iowa! I was living in the meditation community where he was a part time resident. He occasionally entertained us with his magic, too.
I remember Doug Henning, and recognized him the second I saw the thumbnail. Your right, he was on virtually every variety show that existed during those two decades. He seemed like such a genuinely nice guy too, what a shame to go so young.
I remember seeing him on TV as a kid. It's like there was this steady train of 70's stars that were always there. Nipsey Russel, Paul Lynde, Sandy Duncan, Perry Como, Lily Thomlin, Shields and Yarnell, Don Rickles, Jerry Lewis, Marlo Thomas, etc. etc. It's like that was the only decade they could exist in.
Born in 72, I watched Doug Henning many times. I recall Shields & Yarnell from my childhood as well. I'm grateful I can go back and watch all the Gen X TV of my youth. Well done😉
Not only do I remember Doug Henning, but I met him once. He was coming to my home town for a performance. My dad had an interest in magic and so eagerly got us tickets. But my dad was also in the travel industry and he figured out which flight Henning would likely arrive on. So Dad took me to the airport and we waited at the gate for Mr. Henning to deplane. When he did, my dad politely caught his attention and told him what a fan I was. Henning said hello and was quite friendly but understandably on a mission to get to his hotel. We understood and were simply thrilled to meet him. I was perhaps 10 years old at the time.
I saw the Magic Show in NY when I was a teen visiting from out of state. Blew my mind! I did wonder what had happened to him. Thanks for filling in the blanks, and God Rest his Soul.
Thanks for making this video and keeping Doug's memory alive. I worked with Doug after he retired from magic shows on a theme park. He spent his last 12 years on it, and I was with him for 10 of those. There were plans to put his parks in Niagara Falls, near Disney World and a last one in The Netherlands. They were huge, but the idea of them died when he did. Sad day in my life when I got the call.
Your video came out 3 days ago (at the time I'm watching this). I was randomly thinking about Doug Henning 2 days ago at work. I was wondering what ever happened to him. Then today, your video popped up for me on youtube. The universe must have been listening! Thank you!

You know what? There's a million ways to die, and only one very narrow path to live a long life! 3) Doug was an icon of childlike wonder and hopefulness to me...I think I appreciated his life attitude even more than his fun magic, which was amazing. 4) I get a bit of relief from life's troubles when I see nostalgic videos like this that take me back to happy places. 5) It's not lost on me that the ideal way for a magician to pass on is to just disappear. Almost like it's an illuuuuuusion! 6) I like your style. Result: subbed.
@@TheLifeandSadEnding you're very welcome! Your video was a great way to start MY day. Have a great one, on me! (You can even knock off early today and relax...I won't tell.)
I loved Doug Henning as a kid. I had the good fortune to see him live at the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle in the very early '80s and volunteered from the audience to help him do a magic trick. First of all, he was a short man, but so charismatic he seemed like a giant. He radiated excitement and wonder that was palpable. He had me inspect a large wooden box that had one open side for any tricks and then he got in the box and they rolled a large mirror in front of the open side and placed a large piece of butcher paper over the mirror...and he stepped right through the mirror!...I even touched the mirror right after he came through to try and find the hole he went through and it was SOLID! To this day, I still have no idea how he did it. Most people nowadays remember David Copperfield, but my favorite stage magician will always be Doug Henning.
I remember seeing him at the 5th Avenue Theater as a kid too. Early 80s sounds about right. I was much too shy to do anything like that but that would be so cool. Yep. Will never forget him and seeing him that night and he stands out above any other magician to me.
My mom took me to see him in the 70's. Met after show, he was a really great guy ! Somewhere buried in 58 years of accumulation I still have his autograph.
Wow a pic of Doug Henning showed up in my 'suggested' vids and I HAD to see it. I'm 59 and remember him and his joyful attitude fondly. And your short, not stretched out, remembrance was great. Thanks for scratching long-lost memories of my fave childhood magician.
I absolutely love, admire, remember and miss Doug Henning!! When I was growing up he was everywhere on TV and I was absolutely thrilled whenever I got to see one of his shows or specials.
Thank you for sharing. I got to see Doug Henning perform live back in the 80's. He, Harry Blackstone and David Copperfield were legends to me as a kid.
Great story thanks! I saw Doug in The Magic Show with my family on Broadway and we all enjoyed it very much. We ran into him in the parking lot back to our car and he gave us his signature big smile when we complimented the show. He seemed genuinely sweet.
Nice job on this. Informative and respectful. I'm75 and have been in love with close-up magic and magic in general, since I was very young. Doug Henning, Harry Anderson and Ricky Jay have been my inspirations since I was in my teens. I still study a lot of their work today. Thanks! Cheers from S. Oregon!
I adored Doug Henning! He had a lovely wit and kind personality. So many television visits and specials! His magic act was second to none, and due to his wonderful personality, he could play to sold out crowds in both downtown USA all the way to Las Vegas! It didn't matter, he was accepted at EVERY level of audience! Mrs. Toad and I will always remember him! RIBBIT!
Doug was my inspiration to take up Magic as a hobby; I had the pleasure of seeing him live in the Magic Show on Broadway twice. The sense of wonder and amazement he brought to magic was truly special. The world lost a real prize - and as I understand it, in part because he refused modern medical treatments, instead opting for eastern medical options. He was one of a kind and was a huge influence in magic returning to the mainstream.
I was lucky enough to see a live show in my city when I was a kid. First row with my parents, his performance was mesmerizing. He pulled my Pops up on stage for the dollar bill in the lemon trick, such a great memory!!!
When I was in art school, we took a trip to NYC one day in 1975. My friend and I walked into a small restaurant, and there was Doug Henning sitting by himself at a table. He couldn’t have been kinder, and we both got his autograph.
Great timing! I saw a picture of Doug just the other day and wondered what happened to him. I do remember watching him on TV and always enjoyed his act. I also loved magic, and played around with it. I watched any and all magic shows I could.
I grew up watching Doug Henning on NBC and on Showtime and Donny and Marie. he had a way of getting your attention and keeping it. So God Bless his Soul and may he Rest in Peace.
My honeymoon was in Toronto in '85 and Henning was debuting a new show there. Being a fan of magic, I was lucky enough to get two tickets for opening night and had a ball watching him perform. There were a couple of "oops" moments that he gladly apologized for because of the first time performing in public with his new show and crew, but it didn't take a bit away from the thrill of seeing him live.
I do remember Doug Henning, my wife and I went to see him in a show at the Stanley Theater in 1981 in Pittsburgh. It was a Great performance I’ll never forget.
I saw Doug Henning perform at The Ohio State University in the mid 70's. To this day, it was one of the best magic acts I have ever witnessed. There was a rope trick that he performed, that to this day, I cannot explain. Thanks for posting.
"It's an _illusion!"_ My friends and I used to do Doug Henning impressions and perform very bad (non) magic for the purported amusement of others. That was our catch-phrase, borrowed from his act. This is the first I've heard of what happened to him - at least, that I can remember. In my first professional software development job, it became a catch-phrase in the office - especially when something that was supposed to work when we demo'd it blew up.
Thank you for providing this information on Doug Henning. I wasn't aware of his education. I was surprised to hear of his early passing. Doug had positive energy and was an enthusiastic magician.
I kind of dumbfounded how I missed this guy? I'm 65 years young and surprised. He has such a contagious smile and look. I'm definitely going to look him up😮
That is strange,I was born in 1970 and I remember him being very popular even before David copperfield.the only one I knew before him was probably harry housini
As a kid growing up in the 70's I was both a magician and escape artist. I had a magic act for may years and part of my act was escaping from ropes, chains and handcuffs. I was even planning on being a professional magician. Doug Henning was my favorite magician and role model as a magician. I watched every show of his that came on NBC and any appearance he had on television ( he was even on Captain Kangaroo once!). He was truly a great magician. And I loved his style. I think he achieved his goal of reviving magic. He made it fun, magical and amazing. Thanls for the video!
Yes I remember seeing Doug Henning perform different feats of magic. I was a teenager then so I don't remember him being everywhere but I do remember watching him on tv.
I certainly remember Doug Henning and being wowed by his performances. Watching this I'm also impressed by his colorful dress style - so '70s! I also grew up watching the Donny and Marie show so if he was on their show, I'm sure I saw him there. RIP, Doug😑
I remember him. He was amazing. I work in technology, and when older customers ask how something works I usually answer with his trademark, “It’s MAAAAAAaaaaagic!”
Doug once came to my elementary school, Elwick in Winnipeg in '76 or '77 to do a meet and greet, make an inspirational speech and perform a few tricks in the gym. Doug made the rounds to a lot of schools across Canada, in the 70s and 80s it was like Guy LaFleur or Wayne Gretzky stopping by your school.
I just came across a picture of my Dad (Norm Wyvern/Wrycraft), Doug and Larry Silverman. This was back when my Dad and Larry Co-Directed the Society of Canadian Magicians back in the 70's. Doug Henning was a family friend/favourite. His sense of wonderment was unmatched. Such a loss to the world of Magic.
I saw him perform on Feb 3, 1974 on my 15th Birthday in Toronto. My mother, God rest her soul, bought 2 tickets. It was at the Bayview Play house. It was a very good show. Does anyone remember the time he performed with a lion on Stage and the lion got aggressive and had his head in his mouth? His passed out, I guess from fear? When he woke up back stage, Bob Hope was sitting beside him telling him jokes. I remember hearing the news that he had died from lung cancer at only 52. What a shame to die so young.
I remember. If I saw Doug Henning in the TV Guide it's likely I watched it, my children permitting. Never knew he passed until this video. Thank you for setting the record straight.
I remember Doug Henning when I was young. He was so popular and was frequently on talk shows. I took up trying to learn magic from enjoying Doug's performance of "Multiplying 5 Card Count" on some talk show. Doug was certainly a great entertainer and avant-garde performer. Wish more young people would take up magic to inject more new blood into that field.
First time visitor and truly enjoyed your video! I'm a Boomer so I remember Doug Henning. I saw him at some Fair and he was amazing. I think they shared the stage with Shields and Yarnell, if I'm not mistaken. He was an amazing entertainer and was kind as well. 🥰
In around 1975/76 some of the students from my junior high class in Maryland went on a field trip to NYC. As part of the adventure we went to Henning’s “Magic Show,” a fun part of the trip. Ah, the good ol’ days.
Thanks for this overview of D.H.'s life (and death). It was most illuminating. I had always assumed that Henning's magic shows were simply eclipsed by the arrival of David Copperfield. I remember Henning when I was young - particularly a TV show he did where he walked through a brick wall. Impressive! I'd be shocked if Henning didn't inspire Copperfield, because Copperfield also elevated the world of magic, adding story arcs and movie-studio-like sets to his live shows. I was always so impressed with Copperfield... and had only remembered Henning as the "precursor" to Copperfield. But your video shows me he was the one who really brought magic/illusion back into the mainstream and to television.
I do remember Doug Henning - he was my absolute favorite!! I'll never forget when he peeled a lemon and pulled a note out of the middle of it that someone had written moments before - I could not get over that trick!
I forgot about Doug Henning, but your video unearthed him from my memory. I saw The Magic Show in Boston. It was terrific. I'm sure I watched that special but, SADLY, I don't remember for sure.
Sad ending. Way, way back when I used to haunt Hollywood Magic store in Orange County. Got to meet some truly talented magicians there and at the Magic Island. Thanks for sharing his story. RIP. Doug.
As a Canadian I most certainly remember him, I watched him all the time ,as he was on everything for a while. He was a great magician, but not the best politician lol cheers Steve
I was into magic as a teenager and my mom took me to see The Magic Show. It was my first Broadway show and I'll never forget it. I was so upset to learn of his passing. RIP Doug.
. my aunt and uncle took me there as a child to "the magic show" on Broadway for my birthday and I doubt you recall but there was a point in the show where he called someone up from the audience to check if a box he was using in a trick was solid.. I remember him as Merlin the Magician. I remember seeing the commercials on TV when I was a kid and his magic acts. So sad he was gone so young. Thank you for remembering him. 🙏🏻
I was levitated by Doug Henning at a show as a kid. It was awesome being selected from the audience and to get to meet this wonderful performer.
So, how'd he do it???????
Please post positive proof pronto

I do remember Doug Henning, my wife and I went to see him in a show at the Stanley Theater in 1981 in Pittsburgh. It was a Great performance I’ll never forget.
Yes indeed i remember Doug and always wondered what became of him, now i know Thank you for this Fine presentation All the Best.
I saw Doug Henning perform at The Ohio State University in the mid 70's. To this day, it was one of the best magic acts
I have ever witnessed. There was a rope trick that he performed, that to this day, I cannot explain. Thanks for posting.
I'm in my 60's and yes I remember him. I havent heard his name in decades. I forgot all about him.
Thanks for the memories.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I kind of dumbfounded how I missed this guy? I'm 65 years young and surprised. He has such a contagious smile and look. I'm definitely going to look him up😮
I remember him, but had no idea he died. He just seemed to disappear (no pun intended) from public view.
That is strange,I was born in 1970 and I remember him being very popular even before David copperfield.the only one I knew before him was probably harry housini
Fortunately there are several videos of him on RUclips that you can watch!
they probably just did not have tv back then
@@matthewtorres9075 Then one fo the first to get major exposure though television. I was 11 years old in 1975 and I did remember him.
RIP, Doug😑
I think he was the earliest magician that I remember . . . the benchmark in magic all others tried to pass
Growing up in the 70's watching The Muppets and other variety shows I definitely remember Doug Henning!
Welcome aboard! Please consider subscribing. Thanks!
In around 1975/76 some of the students from my junior high class in Maryland went on a field trip to NYC. As part of the adventure we went to Henning’s “Magic Show,” a fun part of the trip.
Ah, the good ol’ days.
I’m from England. I remember Doug on television, especially around Easter and Christmas.
I never missed his show or specials, he was a great entertainer.
I do remember Doug Henning - he was my absolute favorite!! I'll never forget when he peeled a lemon and pulled a note out of the middle of it that someone had written moments before - I could not get over that trick!
I remember Doug Henning he was all over TV be sure to do a lot of things in his life
I loved Doug Henning! I wondered what happened to him. Very sad. Thank you, Steve.
I forgot about Doug Henning, but your video unearthed him from my memory. I saw The Magic Show in Boston. It was terrific. I'm sure I watched that special but, SADLY, I don't remember for sure.
If you saw the roadshow version of The Magic Show in Boston, chances are that you saw my friend Peter Depala instead of Doug Henning.
This brings back memories. I hadn't thought about him in decades. A real blast from the past.
I remember Doug and his magic. He kept me mesmerized with it.
@davestark2015 Why not? Almost All politicians are magicians 🎩 🙄!
I was the lucky kid who got called up on stage..I remember kicking that box so hard my foot hurt after but it's definitely something I'll always remember
That illusion of his you speak of is called metamorphosis. First popularized by Harry Houdini. 😊
I've always wondered about him. Where he went. Thank you for this. May he rest in peace.
Saturday night live did a great skit about him he was portrayed as a guest on Match Game.
I remember him as Merlin the Magician. I remember seeing the commercials on TV when I was a kid and his magic acts. So sad he was gone so young. Thank you for remembering him. 🙏🏻
