For those who don't know, this is a fun commercial about the Bob Dylan Box Set "Original Mono Recordings". It satirizes the "scientists" back in the 60's who used to say that Stereo sound is bad etc... The album came out in October 19, 2010.
I inherited my dad"albums and he played his special RCA recordings of Django Reinhardt in the 1930"s but my album...scratch free...is in stereo then already...yeah..of Django ! WOW
The reference comes from the early 1960s, in the early days of rock-and-roll, when mono records were the standard that most people listened to. Engineers mixed records for best sound for the mono records, then created stereo mixes more as an after-thought, so they didn't do the best job for the stereo records. Oftentimes (such as with Beatles records) they would place all the vocals in one side and the instruments on the other. This all changed in the late '60s when stereo became more valued.
UK of all places, think in this day and age the big companies would have their copyrights sorted so we could all enjoy content together but nope too many thumbs in the country pie, guess i best go saddle me up my big white goose, tie me on and let her loose... @outwanderin
So, the well-mixed stereo recordings you are playing in your headphones do, as you say, sound awesome, because they are in full stereo. The "commercial" here is not meant to be factual, but is a parody of how some people thought in the early '60s (when mono records were the standard). Today it is the other way around, because engineers know how to mix for stereo and strive for best stereo sound: stereo is better than mono.
OK, I'm totally layman about the mono-or-stereo debate, so need a little help. I've always preferred the sound of stereo - I have an Aretha Franklin album that has her songs in mono but also the better known songs in stereo too as an extra. I like the stereo better. But, satirical science aside, is mono ACTUALLY better than stereo in any way? And why would I buy this product on top of all my other Dylan albums? Thanks.
That's humor. It certainly isn't real (the sony tapdeck is from the late seventies and some video is definately brand new). And about mono or stereo: I'd rather have a good mono recording than a bad stereo one, but when your set is positioned right and you are in the 'sweet spot' between your speakers, stereo can be such an experience. You know what's bullshit? More than two speakers for music. There's plenty of depth in good stereo, only most people don't know how to tune their audio rig ;)
ironic that the rise of the iPod and mp3 player has resulted in people completely abandoning stereo music systems in favour of mono docks (or docks with two speakers so close together they might as well be mono! Also some stereo mixes are really bad with instruments 100% in one channel and 0% in the other, totally unlistenable on headphones (e.g. a lot of Jimi Hendrix stuff)
couldnt disagree with this video even more.. soo dumb.. mono is cool.. very classy has the old school feel but u have to admit stereo does sound better.. to me it sounds more FULL away from the flatness :)

"You don't listen to music with your ears." This is hilarious. Thank you Columbia and thank you Mono.
The best spot TV ever!
the Canadian mono mix 1st press of Blonde is so raw and sublime, you just have to share it with your auntie.
"3½ dollars!?? That's more than my allowance!!" :-D
Hilarious - and the best promotional I've seen in eons.
"Twixt." HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!! Absolutely brilliant & spot-on parody. All commercials should be this funny! Plus, I love the use of the original records.
Remember the 'ping-pong' stereo mixing techniques of the 1959-63 era? If all stereo were like that, I'd be 100% in agreement with Bob!
Oh, the evils of "stereo."!! LOL!
Love this!!
Exactly Scotty!
Makes me wonder what the hell surround sound is doing do our brains!
Stereo and fluoridation. Next thing you know we'll be PAYING for TV!!
THE MADNESS!!
Wow, someone finally answered! A little ambiguously.
@whokilledcamilo
It´s "Obviously 5 Believers" by Bob Dylan. On the album "Blonde on Blonde".
A friend of mine had mono when she was a teenager. Guess she was ahead of her time.
I would bet my bottom dollar that the brains behind this is Bob's friend and producer of his "Theme Time Radio Hour", Eddie Gorodetsky.
@nibiru48 Not to mention Quadraphonic "Nashville Skyline" :-)
I inherited my dad"albums and he played his special RCA recordings of Django Reinhardt in the 1930"s but my album...scratch free...is in stereo then already...yeah..of Django ! WOW
Ha ha ha ha ha. Awesome video.
'But why would I want to fool my brain'?
It's true; i got mono from Bob Dylan.....still better than the time Jagger gave me gonorrhea..
Is this Bob Dylan's answer to the Beatles Mono Box Set?
Hilarious !
i wish they had said, "IVE GOT MONO!!!"
I love this... I just do

Dig it, Man!!!
Knockin' on heaven's door!
You mean, some folks actually bought into the whole stereo thing? Geeez!
@bigderfla Wait, what do yo mean? Parody?
Bob still rules.
@anderso ..Or... it's called "Norwegian Wood" and it's from The Beatles "Rubber Soul" album from 1965 ;-)
with stereo..you can hear a jet plane fly from left to right...or...right to left !!
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
MONO Sounds the best!!
@BoshkoIgich In Serbia most people don't even have televisions.
In Serbia most radio and TV stations transmit in mono!
whoa a video from bob that isn't blocked in my country
Clever commentary on the use of auto-tune today.
@SayNOtoCarrots If you are listening it through headphones it is stereo (: Try it out.
where's the columbia advert from?
Dang - so much for quadraphonic then - lol
Best part was the last few seconds, courtesy of the stupendous Hi-Los.
HAHAHAHAHAHA :D Fucking Awesome!
funny clip!
Can anyone please tell me what is the song at 2.02?
It is ironic that now we listen to this in Stereo ..
Was Blonde on Blonde originally issued in mono or stereo?
UK of all places, think in this day and age the big companies would have their copyrights sorted so we could all enjoy content together but nope too many thumbs in the country pie, guess i best go saddle me up my big white goose, tie me on and let her loose... @outwanderin
Hilarious.
@sowhatnowhere Thanks! :)
@CharlieMcCotton I agree...
the kissing disease
Is that the great (and now sadly late) Dick Tufeld doign the voice over?
ill stick with Mono, Bob
Did Dylan go stereo before or after he went electric ?
Mono Rules stereo's for Fools.
Yes mono sounded great - coming from a 2 inch speaker in the middle of the dashboard.
@ftasic I don't believe he is responsible for that.
i lold
What's the name of the song that starts at 2:30?
what song is it at 3:08??

Long time ago, 2010 I believe..
I was not tricked by Mono vs Stereo, i always asked could i have mine in 33 1/3 please.
hehehehe
or this just a sales pitch so i can buy the songs i already own in a different sound format?
was this Bob's idea?
frank cooper sent me here
Mr. Professor i not sterly...t... also i never asked abouts, his names also i leaves it's a lones, big deals
That's why I stick with 5.1 surround sound.
Some of his electric set are lacking in Mono compared to Stereo though. Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands and Outlaw Blues especially.
If God intended sound to be monophonic, he'd have given Adam & Eve one ear each, instead of two, ffs!
I did stick with mono....sadly not this one...
He said darn! We don't use that sort of filthy language in the good old U.S of A!
The video is unplayable:(
hahhahahahahhahahahahah
Bob Dylan conformed a conspiracy theorist.
what is this? i dont even?
I feel vindicated. You better believe I'm sticking with Mono. Take that unscrupulous profiteers.
As far as I am concerned: I'll stick with Mono!
dude who the fuk wouldnt want led zeppelin in your fricken room or what ever else you listen to

This is a joke, people. Satire? Bob Dylan hasn't a thing to. do with it besides the few bars of music from a couple songs like Rainy Day Women
