Holy shit Zack you're so right. Posting Pictures of yourself on Social Media is the opposite of confidence. People do it to feel better about themselves. It's a symptom. Love to see it said.
Social media is a tool, it can be great or a disaster depending on who you are as a person and how you use it. Great video, thanks for talking about this!
yes its just like a re lie gion
This is why I prefer YT a lot. You can upload whatever length videos you want. Whether people will get pushed them is another thing but at least you can upload them. You don't get this with Twitter, Tiktok and Instagram (Facebook is different as videos can be longer on there).
I agree wholeheartedly. I've never had much of a presence personally on social medias but I have been on them just without posting much about my own opinions or whatever because its very easy to become a target of harassment, especially if you're more popular like yourself or other higher profile people online. I've definitely noticed a trend about self-worth and social media usage correlating the way you mentioned. Someone who doesn't believe in themselves will only find reasons to further their belief in being lesser and vice versa. We can also see how it can severely affect people who are dealing with other subjects such as negative thoughts, depression or even much worse than that. Sadly there's been examples lately especially in the past year about just how bad it can get at times. Just this year the amount of "cancel" we've had from cancel culture and just brigading people to the point of not even letting them say their part is disgusting.
Specifically following on the extremes value, its become a very negative trend in which a lot of people believe in a very binary view of the world, that everything is either good or bad, yes or no. But the world is morally gray ( More morally gray than Sylvanas anyway ) and to not deal with complex issues as such and instead attempt to just boil it down to simple answers to complex problems we only cause more friction and issues down the line. We can see this especially in politics and in twitter as well, a huge amount of people fall into the trap of believing if they're not with me they're against me and just has everyone against each other, when in reality nothing should really be that way.
The worlds a complex place, and just trying to boil it down to simple answers has only been hurting us. We need to be more open to communicating with people and doing so in a way that they too can understand rather than ostracize them for being ignorant. A big issue with the climate change deniers is also due to the fact that no one takes them seriously or debates with them fairly, leading them to feel wronged and lesser. Which only makes them feel angrier at the people who believe otherwise and makes them double down on their beliefs and finding echo-chambers for themselves and people of like minded thinking.
I feel like I can go on and on about this topic, but all in all. I definitely agree with you on the issue at large. There's so much more we can do and just not doing anything is extremely wrong.
I stopped using social media last year. There's nothing social about it.

I'm honestly way happier these 2 months I distanced myself from narcissistic people social media and forums created (everybody who disgarees with me is wrong and I just call names because I'm always right because I also get likes!), it feels like 10+ years ago. I was simply happy. I think I finaly caved in and they finaly chipped away at my thick skin. I do miss posting on forums but knowing the majority of personalities of people that lurk there? Just remembering their names makes me think of all of the times I tried to get them willing to hold a normal discussion. Then seeing their names, 1 thing with WoW being garbarge I just have too much free time and actually going to bed to 2 hour+ early every day. @@Finish303 It really seems that all social media does is cause problems. No thanks.

No clue how 2020 will look for me but I'm hoping more will wake up and that our group will grow so it isn't a requirement anymore to have Facebook or Instagram to be socially active. Hopefully also a competitor to Whatsapp so I can dump this this Facebook owned app.
In the wise words of Gary Vaynerchuk, social media is a slang term for the current state of the internet and it doesn't change people, it exposes how people actually are. Nobody is forcing your hand down to vote for anyone. Facebook isn't forcing you to look at anything. People showing their best life or perceived best life on instagram? People have always done that before social media. People talking shit on twitter cuz they can get away with it? They've always been assholes, they would talk shit to themselves in the car or to their friends. People always on their phones scrolling? Same shit as 1950 of people not talking and looking down at the newspaper waiting for the bus. Bottom line is social media doesn't change people, it exposes people for who they have been all along. You can't fake anything. You can't hide. Truth always comes out. I think in the next few years we're gonna take a step back and go through some shit with this transparency thanks to social media to take 3 steps forward. We need to stop putting social media on a pedestal of evil and start teaching people how to use it for good. Remember guys, your grandparents thought Elvis shaking his hips was the devil. We'll be fine with social media. It's not ruining kids, nor anyone else. In fact, it's the gateway to social interaction. When you got 200 friends on fb, you can connect and meet them in person. There's just way too much naivety to the nuances of this issue and people are just blowing it out of proportion. We need to start pointing fingers at ourselves and take accountability and stop blaming the platform.
Close your eyes and it's Kermit the Frog talking to you.
I opened my eyes and there is still Kermit the Frog talking to me.
In my case, i deleted my facebook and instagram account(i never created a twitter account so yeah), because i find those sites so shittier and so toxic at most of the time and also that i have a lot of problems with some stupid people that i argue with them of things that i disagree, but later those guys are some kind of untouchable people because they have a lot of followers, are more "beautiful" and so on.

At the same time, there is the much more unsettling opposite idea of the domination of my screen persona over my "real" self. Our social identity, the person we assume to be in our social intercourse, is already a "mask" that involves the repression of our inadmissible impulses. But it is precisely in the conditions of "just playing" - when the rules regulating our "real life" exchanges are temporarily suspended - that we can permit ourselves to display these repressed attitudes. Take the proverbial impotent shy person who, while participating in a cyberspace interactive game, adopts the identity of an irresistible seducer or sadistic murderer. It is all too simple to say that this identity is just an imaginary escape from real-life impotence. The point is rather that, since he knows that the cyberspace interactive game is "just a game," he can "show his true self" and do things he would never have done in real-life interactions. In the guise of a fiction, the truth about himself is articulated. The fact that I perceive my virtual self-image as mere play thus allows me to suspend the usual hindrances which prevent me from realising my "dark half" in real life. My electronic id is given wing. - Zizek

You're right. He didn't choose to be the Asmon character on stream out of sheer preference, but sadly because the average Twitch viewer is relatively stupid, immature and has a short attention span. @@ingwiafraujaz3126 right there with ya. This is why I can't watch most Twitch streamers. Viewership has a tendency to remove "intellectual potential" in effort for escapism or vicarious living instead of engaging, growing and improving.

Man you have a great ability to express your thoughts in an intellectual manner. That's your BiS
i enjoyed social life most when i uninstalled social media :)
I don't think social media by itself is wrong. Any problems with social media exist just the same in the real world. Social media is just everything about social interaction blown up thousands of times. The good is expanded greatly but the bad is too, and inherent problems with social interaction is greatly amplified too.
The main things in my opinion that really fucks certain people up on social media is the combination of:
1. Negativity Bias where it's common to focus on the negative much more than positives. Pretty common.
2. The scale of social media. Before you were focusing on 1 person out of 100 that hates you. Now you get 1000s of but it may still be proportionally the same. however feels like the whole world is against you. Our brains weren't prepared for instant and targeted feedback from thousands of people. It can be overwhelming to probably most people.
3. Addiction. They're simply addicted to seeking the negatives, what makes them unhappy, and just self destructive behavior. What really tips everything over.
You just need to take a step back sometimes to remind yourself that your monkey brain has you in a cycle and that things may not really be how you feel they are.
To sum it up, Social Media BAD. Only useful thing is Messenger.
Your the best zackmon, I honestly tune into your streams just to hear you talk, gameplay is secondary.
Keep it up man!
Yeah, I'm pretty excited to watch this video, especially that it took me some time now to ponder upon that problem.
People partake in actions because they are motivated with rewards either conciously or absolutely without their knowledge. It was always people's goal to develop their social skills and create new friendships as some could flourish into extremely valuable long-lasting relations. It seems, like social media allowed that evolutionary need to be dimmed by the illusionary, alterantive reality. Unfortunately, "virtual points" as pewdiepie put it, became the longed for reward. Out of the social media, the worst are the applications by which you can share your "achievements" like the distance/time of your bike rides. It's always motivating to beat yourself, to get better and healthier. But once you begin to share your accomplishments with everyone around the social media, you bind your sense of reward with these "virtual points". And that's just purely dillusional.
It's always good to ask yourself whether the shit I put in social media truly engages anyone on the other side of the screen. But the worst part, in my opinion, is that it's actually two-step process. First of all, young kids begin to watch non-educational shit on RUclips and other platforms, and then they try to transfer that bs into their own life.
You can also observe some funny phenomena: it's some kind of "double-grip". First, people get addicted to social media, and then they are being convinced that they all fully aware of that fact. Some when you talk with someone and ask the question: do you think that social media has a negative effect on people's life, they will surely confirm. But then, when you check their Instagram account, all you can see is over 200 posts and over 500 followers. It will never stop to amaze me.
It's just a dead cycle. Every psychological studies within the last couple of years seems to prove that the rates of depression and heavy mental issues rise. Suicidal behaviours and self-harm attitudes within the group of 10-14 yrs old girls have risen by c.a. 250%...
As a matter of fact, people are statistically stupid. The distribution of intelligence is actually a normal distribution. It's sad, but not many people are capable to possess the critical thinking skills - something I would call the most important skill of humanity; something that unlocks the doors into the real world. I don't know how it looks outside my country, Poland it is, but here a lot of people tend to seek the advice in "coaching" and "personal development trainers" - people who make businesses of talking bullshit to people and selling them the "recipe for happy life".
It's really funny and sad at the same time, that the ones who truly seek the answers for happy life are being called "boring" or "stupid", while it's social media that enhance the stereotypical thinking that everyone can become someone, that followers matters, that these people who put a "like/heart/laughing emoji" on your photo are really curious about your life in the positive sense. And whenever the problem appears, people look for answer in - I call it - street wisdom. A type of wisdom that is used by common people, probably our parents, most of our friends, and majority of people that surround us. A wisdom, that probably has some sense, but does not offer any critical solutions for our problems.
I just wonder, when that world will crumble? What is the line of the illusionary world build on the fundaments of popularity, fame and social acceptance? What is the cost of boosting own self-esteem on likes and number of followers? But you know what is the worst part of that shit? The majority, no matter how stupid they are, will always be the decisive part of your society. It's them who decide: in politics, in economics, everywhere.
Greatly worded, I appreciate the thought you put into this comment. I'm impressed if English isn't your primary language (considering you said you are from Poland) because this level of writing is far above what many native speakers achieve.
@@FihnProductions Yeah, I'm from Poland :) it's not often that someone appreciate my thoughts, so thank you a lot for your kind words! :)
@@camelhoarder850 'sup dude. I have a bit of a theory on the reason as to why our people go to these "coaches" to buy crap that doesn't work.
As a fellow Slav (I'm not from Poland), I've noticed that a lot of my people are still very much into folklore and history, which is fantastic. But it comes with a caveat, they are also very much into alternative medicine and alt-science and what-not, that actually come from old folk tales and shit. It's usually harmless typical stuff, like if I get a cold my mother will tell me to make some soup, brew some tea etc. etc. But sometimes I'm just baffled by it. Just to give you an example, very recently my own goddamn sister, who I thought was smarter than this, bought tea, that was advertised to be able to grow your breasts. Breast-enlarging-tea.
I don't know how much of this is true at all, there is no research this is based upon, it's just kind of funny to think about.
Oh and the most common bullshit products are weight loss pills, usually bought by women over 30 years old.
Great wording. It's not shocking social media is making a growing of depressed people in the young generation. It only creates envy, unnecessary desire, and anger to those we can't control. Sadly, it's also true there is nothing much we can change how the media behaves. Big entities like corporations and corrupt governments want weak-minded citizens, and apparently, using and exploiting social media was the perfect opportunity for them. George Carlin puts its "The game is rigged, people".
Not saying we can change, but we have sadly ingrained ourselves into a big and unnecessary hivemind. Not a lot of thinkers, who can express their thought individually without the conscience of others. It's just one big blob of ignorance.
@@Overphased Thanks for response. That is quite interesting what you're writing here. It truly might be something "rooted" in our slavic nature. On the other hand, alternative medicine is well-known all around the globe. As I mentioned, the thing I call the "street wisdom" is a toss-up. It means, that some "traditional" methods of healing are actutally accurate, but usually by accident: let's take a chicken soup as an example. It is being said, at least in Poland, that chicken soup can heal the cold. And funnily enough, it's quite true :) - first of all, eating ANY kind of soup while it being hot, warms up the organism which is desired while being sick. On top of that, making chicken soup with SKIN ON THE CHICKEN STILL ON, releases cystein, which has healing properties - but somehow nobody really says: remember, chicken has to have the skin on :)
And that's precisely what I am talking about. A lot of the "street wisdom" is correct simply by a pure coincidence - and what is really important is to know "why". The same people that seek answers in "street wisdom" will also believe in irrational ideas, and the same people won't be able to connect cause and effect. So people who tell you to eat chicken soup while being sick may be correct, but they will also be wrong with many other cases. That is what makes "street wisdom" a bad habit.
You say it's harmless, and I agree. Homeopathy and placebo effect seem to be harmless too. Yet, would you prefer to live in conscious society, or the one who make assumptions without reason? as the same people who follow objectively good ideas by mere accident, will be the ones to to follow bad habits. :)

Social Media ruined women mostly.
I've noticed this with a lot.of streamers who start out, claiming they are so positive and nice only to build a community that follows every move and praises every action, even if it's done to tear someone down. If they do something negative, they say, "I'm not a nice person IRL" and they cheer. If they say, "let's attack this person" their community attacks and tears it down. To me, those who are surrounded by the drama, at a certain point, create it for themselves and they crave it so much because it is much easier to tear someone down than it is to build themselves up, or go seek therapy.

It feels like you partially acknowledge this by saying that you play up things on stream, but I think that when you were talking about "meaning something" to people emotionally you didn't mean car crashes and kidnappings. However, if you put those news stories and exaggerations under the guise of "content creation", and investigate it under the scope of short AND long-term capitalist profitability, it seems that superficial content gets more money than wholesome or intellectually honest content does.
You criticize streamers for not shepherding toxic communities in your other video. Is it actually more profitable to go for mass appeal to untapped demographics than it is to make a solid community? It seems that way right?
While I agree that the streamer experience and the moral reality of having a solid community is good for the whole, if your entire basis for streaming was profit it seems that those values do not align. Do you see what I mean?
I agree that people should shape their communities, that people should enjoy streaming, that profitability should not be more important than the art of content creation. I just feel like that talking point is more personal for streamers to find a balance of money and enjoyment, because wishing morality to drive the Twitch platform, the streamers, or the community seems a bit unrealistic, you know?
Thanks for the video
This is Zach in "dad mode". He has a comforting presence.
It’s the Dad sweater vibes I think. He’s got the Mister Rogers tone as well.
Humans were never supposed to be exposed to such stimuli that mass media produces. People rarely have time to unwind from social interactions cause social interactions are all around them thanks to greater access to computers and phones and the different social media that come with. We alter ourselves, our identity, in accord to every and each social interaction (which varies individually) we face daily and have done so centuries past. Nothing has changed except that this exposure to social interaction and social comparison and other psychological strains that come with has been dialed up to 10. The result is that we increase the risk of chronic stress and as a result, depression or other similar disorders are produced. Social media is 100% bad for your mentality, that's for sure. Look at every scientific study that has been done and you'll quickly realize that social media is almost never a factor in living a satisfactory and fulfilling life.
This is smart talk my boi, joke aside, you show a lot of wisdom and empathy in your insights, this is the real Asmon, Zack !
It's the Zackmon :)
I'm not gonna listen to advice from a guy with a room like that, there's clearly more deep seated problems in your life than social media to live in a fucking sty with cups, plates and junkfood everywhere not including used trousers and various other clothing items draped over your fucking chair and bed.
At least im not a furry lmao xd
Most of this is on point but I'd like to add that, for women and girls, they get judged more by _other_ woman and girls, rather than just dudes, and I think that adds more to that self worth factor
+50 DKP
Are people really not woke enough to realize social media isn't bad for you? I grew up from this weird obsession on comparing myself over another person by just working my ass off and playing games and using social media as a form of communication. People who are literally over obsessed and starts being toxic over social media spends too much time in their hands not doing anything about their lives thus ended up being offended by people and thinking people are faking their lives using social media by posting photos of travels, work, parties and many more. The only reason you get these ideas because you are surrounded by these type of people who fakes their lives from social media and it doesn't mean generally a lot of people does it.
going on with the real talk and then boom at least I'm not a furry had me rolling
lmao i loled at that too
No man, the people who use social media or the norm, therefore we are the normies.. People who don't use social media are unique. I do think it makes the west less social and more divided then ever before.
Hey Zack, I'm a current MSc Cyberpsychology student and we've had this discussion several times in class. You're not wrong, and most your points and exemplar cases are actually TRUE LULW
This video is a better reference for high school English essays than most research articles
whats good in a man "funny, smart, makes a bit of money"
whats good in a woman "stays off social media"
Hey there Zack/Asmon. I've been a casual fan for about a year now and while your Asmongold content is great, this is some of my favorite as well. I actually just graduated with a B.S. in psychology this past weekend and run a casual psychology channel here on RUclips as well so things like this particularly peak my interest.
This discussion is something really important in my opinion. Social media is something entirely new to humanity given the scope oh human history. I mean, Facebook came out in 2004. Most of us didn't start even using it until about 2010. Now it is hard to imagine not having it. Social media has entirely shifted how modern culture is developed and how we as its users interpret the world around us.
Social media is where people show off their absolute best and pretend that their worst does not exist, or on the other side of things, they tend to wallow in the worst and ignore any light that is present. A 2015 study "Social Comparison, Envy, and Depression on Facebook: A Study Looking at the Effects of High Comparison Standards on Depressed Individuals" found that individuals who were depressed showed high levels of envy when viewing others social media pages and also that there is a negative correlation between social media envy and positive self esteem (So, the more envy, the less positive self esteem).
The idea of social media echo chambers is in my opinion one of the most harmful aspects of social media. I consider myself fairly centrist politically. I noticed one day that I have one "Friend" on facebook who is EXTREMELY right wing (Trump posts, anti-abortion, Only Christians in the U.S., Etc.) and I found that reading those types of posts made me uncomfortable because they go against some of my beliefs. That said, I have another "friend" who is EXTREMELY left wing (Trans individual, if you don't 100% support trans in every way including sports you are a nazi/racist, Trump is evil, etc.). This individuals posts also make me quite uncomfortable as I disagree with certain points.
Here is the issue with a situation like that though. Those two individuals would NEVER see each others posts because BOTH of them are the types who are "If you don't agree with me, delete me."
There is no room for growth. There is no discussion. All of their posts and the comments on them are just one view being agreed upon by people who have no interest in discussion.
Here is my question though - what can be done about this? What solution is there for echo chambers such as these when it would be immoral to influence peoples connections with each other (we cant force people to be friends).
As you said though, the echo chambers aren't just for political purposes though, they also exist on a singular psychological level, even in the micro degree. An individual who thinks they are worthless or ugly might go onto social media and see people who are only portraying the top .1% of their life through pictures and posts and said person might think "why can't my life be like that?"
Meanwhile the "perfect person" is at home alone drinking away their worries while looking at the exact same photo and wondering when the next time they are going to be happy is.
All in all, social media is difficult and is not something that is entirely understood. I am curious as to how it will shape the next decade.
I heard from somewhere that you are going through a rough time recently. If that is true, then I wish you the best in getting through it.
Merry Christmas/Happy holidays.
I may not show it but social media really be giving me a warped view of the world.
Yo i think i am an outlier here but i watch all your stuff on YT and don’t really watch the stream. Watch those clips videos, and then the ones you post. I haven’t played Wow since i was 14, but like hearing about state of the game ect.. I thought it’d be cool for you to talk about your opinion on competitive esports, gaming orgs, the future of gaming content creation and streaming (feels like the wild west rn) what the twitch audience is like and why certain people pick up so much traction. I’ll watch whatever! but thought maybe it’d be helpful to throw a few ideas out there
Nice video :) Really enjoyed the entire talk
My facebook has basically just become a feed of ads lol. I unfollow 90% of my friends, because for whatever reason, I get so annoyed by anything anyone posts. I only go for memes, messenger, and band announcements
talking about the importance of going outside and social interaction from a guy who spends all his time in his dungeon. All jokes aside I like this style of vid. More of it please.
Social Media can be good.
What is hardly good are so-called "Influencers" that present a false image of how things should be.
Basically all of them..
Hes really losing it
Brett Self excatly what I thought ahahaa
In what way?
Not sure if I should listen to this guy about what is bad for you and unhealthy, regardless the topic, however, social media does ruin a lot of things in life, but so does living in shadows as hermit separated from society in a life perpetuated by depression and anxiety
You are a good man with good man's eyes. Happy holidays to you and your family, Zack. Take care.
Super insightful commentary on an extremely relevant topic in today’s world. Nice to hear someone of similar age (I’m 27) speaking from a well-informed and thought-our perspective on something that really affects all of us. My wife is 5 years younger than me and I have definitely had my eyes opened up to how drastically different social media can play a role in a persons life; and that’s just comparing my own life and my wife’s.
Also nice to see someone as big a presence on the internet as yourself taking the time to speak on a topic like this and shed light in a way that’s digestible. Videos like this can really serve as a good gateway to open up a conversation that someone out there may need to have. They could simply put this video on in front of friends or family and it could really help someone out with opening that door.
Good on you man. Happy holidays and look forward to your next video and/or stream.

im 100% sure zac has slavic ancestors
My biggest fear is that some people may not take you seriously because of who you are and your reputation, but honestly this is one of the best pieces of thought offered on this quickly heating hot topic.
To throw my hat into the ring I can certainly agree that social media has it's positives and negatives, and both of those can be accelerated rapidly into highs and lows. As an autistic and depressed man I can definitely say that social media has given me an outlet to experience things that I have never. Making friends, being moderately popular and well liked, people caring about my opinion etc. But I can also say it has made me significantly more socially reclusive to the point where I get anxious even thinking about going outside. It's 100% a double edged sword with no clear right answer, I suppose that is just the status quo with modern, unexplored and solemn researched topics.
Your part about body image definitely hit home for me. Now more than ever it is easier to see hundreds if not thousands of people who are more conventionally attractive and more successful than you in that matter of seconds. It's like staring at an abyss, one that you cannot hope to surmount; And when it stares back, you are just left feeling worse and worse about yourself. And this is one of the many traps one can fall into as many have already.
I appreciate you offering your thoughts, asmongold
"It's like a mirror"
Damn, I'm gonna use this one. Ty zack
Short answer yes it's bad especially in America
Every time you take a break I'm reminded how great your stream is. You simply cannot compare it to any other stream. I hope you're doing well Zack!
You should have to be at least 18 to use social media, and even then it's bad for you.
It might be but making an extra million dollars a month sitting in a chair playing video games would make it a lot better
This video is for Izzy G. Get your shit together girl.
Videos like this are why I am on RUclips
I love you so much Zack.
Hewa Karem yeah he’s a good dude for sure
Social media is indeed merely a tool, like all technology it lacks character, an own will, and is therefore neutral. But a mirror? A mirror, dear Zack, requires to be neutral, what will reflect your actions back to you on social media is most of the time not neutral, but a chaotic mess three steps down in hell. I don't think that's what you meant by calling social media a mirror.
Wow these long talks are pretty damn substantive. I really like this. Of course, I am -NOT- part of the majority here on youtube since most of what I watch are science, history docs and games. Keep this up. Your voice and tone is very calm and relaxing I really enjoyed it because of that and that you hit this issue on top of the head. I tell my GF that social media sucks and I'm 28 but I spend ZERO time on social media (The ones other than youtube/twitch). It always makes me compare myself to friends of random strangers. I'm not a fit guy, I'm not a small guy. 6 foot 210 lbs I look alright but I'm not ripped AF like the guys on Instagram so I feel weak and fat. I don't have a programming job in SF like people from my high school graduating class. I finished college a little later then most so I'm just starting a career when they all finished before me and are already on their way in a career and traveling. You just compare your life vs theirs and it feels like absolute shit. What's fucked is it's just a facade, you KNOW that the people with all the travel photos have money issues, you KNOW the couples are not 100% happy all the time... it's just a small snapshot that they took hours to make to LOOK great/awesome to their peers.
Love that you're uploading more man, love the streams, and videos. Happy holidays man
Asmon really has a way with words. Really appreciate his tact
I disconnected from all social media. It is cancer!
Did a speech about this topic just recently, interesting timing with this upload :D Good video Zack
Deleted Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter around two years ago. Definitely don't miss it.
