    I went to 3 of his drum clinics, saw him perform with a Big Band 3 times and met him more than once...my favorite drummer of all time and one heck of a nice guy. "Skin Deep" got me interested in playing drums.

    Ya know, Buddy Rich was a MONSTER drummer, but Louie's solos always sounded more MUSICAL to me, AND more creative. Your thoughts??

    • @gustavogomes1386
      @gustavogomes1386 4 месяца назад

      Yep. Just thought the same. Louie can do what Buddy can do, but has a broader palette AND put more thought on the COMPOSITIONAL side of the drum solo. In short, Buddy is wilder, Louie is more refined.

    • @brian07470
      @brian07470 2 месяца назад

      I don't know man...Iove Louie and all but Buddy was EXTREMELY musical and did solos with similar structure as this one. Snare, just the cymbals/hi-hat, flying around the kit....One difference is Buddy only had one bass drum..LOL

    • @IvoMaropo
      @IvoMaropo 2 месяца назад

      Louie was NOT on Buddy's level. This is simply not true. Buddy was more musical, more technical and could come up with incredibly fascinating solos on the spot. But it doesn't take anything away from Louie, who was also a great drumner. One thing is undisputed, though, Louie was, on average, a much nicer person.

    • @125sloth
      @125sloth Месяц назад

      What a lot of people do not know or refuse to believe is that Rich was high on something most of the time, which apparently made him "wilder", but not necessarily brilliant. You could almost anticipate what a Rich solo would entail at times, however Louie Bellson was full of surprises and knew how to really mix it up and never boring.

    I personally like Bellson the best out of the big three, the other two being Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, all three rock though and it's hard to pick favorites when they're improvisation was so different.

    • @125sloth
      @125sloth 8 месяцев назад +1

      Very true. Improvisation is the key word here. This is why you can't really "choose" who is the greatest of the three. Like you, I like Bellson the best. And without Krupa, there would have been no Rich. Krupa was the first to put the drummer "out front" with the rest of the band. Louie Bellson was a incredible drummer and a very nice guy and well respected. Rich, whilst being a great drummer was an arrogant so and so, full of himself. Which is why Bellson and Krupa will always be admired more as people, and in Bellson's case, arguably a better drummer than Rich overall. However, as you say, hard to pick favourites as far as playing goes, but Bellson was simply a decent and humble guy.

    As expected and beyond - Does not disappoint and puts some perspective on his all out playing. Is there a way to get a higher bit rate (say 256kbps - wav) file of this recording? I first heard Louie on Pablo's "Basie Jam" 50 years ag0 - incredibly tasteful and exciting on the drum break - what an intelligent and skilled drummer.

      Obviously, you know ZERO about either one.
      1st and foremost they are BOTH dead.
      Go ahead and check out their famous drum battle they had on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in '69.
      Then you will realize how ridiculous you sound saying that.
      I'll use the famous Rocky III quote from the end of the movie when Rocky and Apollo are by themselves in a gym in a boxing ring.
      Apollo Creed to Rocky, quote..."You fight great, but I'm a great fighter.
      Louie played great, but Buddy was a great drummer.

      @@abrahamweber3075 I've seen Buddy live and close up many times. I've also seen Louie a number of times live and close up. First, Buddy's buzz rolls were electric, much smoother and more intense then Louie's. What Louie did with 2 bass drums Buddy did with one. As far as being nice, I didn't know either one personally. I heard that Louie was a real gentleman. My opinion, Buddy was in a different league all together.
