I just want you all to know that one of walt disney's main animators was black. His name was floyd norman. Walt just hired the people who he knew would get the work done with good quality
Thank you so much for sharing that. My mother told me that she was accepted into his school when she was very young. But Walt died. She didn't get to go, and she cried when he died. It was shocking to me that my mother was accepted being black in her day and time.
it's insane for people to polarize Walt Disney...he wasn't a saint nor the devil...he was just a human, a dude with flaws and insane mistakes...he just happened to make great films; that's it. He was a genius in his field, true...but people tend to get caught up in the myth and forget that he was a person like the rest of us.
Also, I use to work at the walt disney world resort. Let me tell you (and I can assure you) that if people only knew what goes on backstage. .. the company would shut down. The drug use, sexual behavior, corruption.... its a reality people. Take it for what it is. I love Disney. The Disney that should have been but never was. But the things I've heard and seen prove that this documentary is SPOT ON!!
I understand Disney fans are shocked by what's being said in this documentary. We all grew up with all the films, characters, music... to hear these things about "uncle walt" is the equivalent to hearing things about your parents that aren't so believable. We can't make excuses for Walt. I whole heartedly believe everything that's being said because that was the reality back then. He was a business man living in the time when it was "appropriate" to behave this way.
I think that it's refreshing to hear the points of view from these people. I can quite believe that Disney had prejudice attitudes, as it was common at the time. There's also many old disney animaton sequences which are racist, which of course are now not shown in the newer releases of fantasia etc.
As an artist which is now 36 and female... My hands do not shake and I could draw any of his male artists from that time beneath the table they deserve to live under, licking my boots clean.
I've been a Disney fan forever. I've been to Walt Disney World nearing 30 times in my 35 years on the planet. You need to also put the time period he was developing the studio in perspective as well. Look at how women were treated in the work place pre-WWII. Of course he is going to look like a monster according to today's workplace standards. Not saying he was right for doing what he did but hey a lot of people seem to work for him regardless of the reputation.
For every documentary that vilifies Walt Disney, there's about 100 documentaries that praise him without flaws. Almost all of them are under the influence or have been produced by the Walt Disney Corporation which is one of the big media empires of the world. I think it's fair to do so for the amount of puke that's out there that puffs up to him.
It's like there are two types of people here: The ones that love Walt Disney and don't want to hear anything nasty about him and then there are people who see him like some sort of tyrant. I think he was probably a good man, and mayeb had some nasty and egotistical habits. No one is perfect...
They weren't that much more prevalent than they are today. Especially in small towns. I grew up in a medium sized city but currently live in a small town. I was absolutely blown away by the ignorance and intolerance that exists here. His views sound exactly the same as people here talk when they are in private and don't think they are being judged. The only difference was that it was more publicly acceptable. Doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean that everyone in his time felt that way.
It's pretty easy to slander a man when he is not around to defend himself. People will do or say anything to discredit this man. As bad as this world has become, I am still amazed at the lengths that these people will go to in trying to destroy anything good and wholesome. Absolutely amazed!!
So... You can't hold yesterday's prejudice up to today's standards. That seems to be a popular comment in this thread. But are we really going to pretend that ethnic prejudice wasn't ignorant, harmful, and hateful in the 1920s-40s? That's just absurd. Walt would have been a poster boy for the Tea Party.
I would have fired those animators too. That's not what Disney is about or what it represents, and not everything needs to be made into something dirty/sexual, they should have left it alone
"He's a hindu!" Which is a religion; if the man looked black, and was Indian, ok, but Hindu is a religion. Slave work?!?! Isn't that an insult to slaves throughout history? I'd say so. Slaves don't get a paycheck, nor do they get to go home and rest, relax and have a life. Don't like the conditions...move on. Bill Melendez says Walt did things that were reprehensible, he was a rascal and a bigot. He says these things with no one questioning it; with such sincerity. He claims Disney was a bigot, but seems Disney was not bigoted towards Mexicans; whom Melendez was. Its odd, because Bill Melendez gave Walt Disney so much praise and "adgelation" in the 2001 documentary Walt: The Man Behind the Myth - even in this video, he gives some positive praise to Disney. The title would suggest that Walt Disney lived some kind of real "secret" life. At some point, even Walt Disney, had to become a "business man," as much as was not a skilled one, it takes business skills to run a business; perhaps something his animators did not understand. If you crossed Disney, you were fired - easy to say if any of those people are dead. Demanding the very best does not make someone a bad person. He in fact employed and promoted many women and people of color and different races. It would appear that most of these people that have "secrets" about Walt, had some ill feelings towards a man that they disagreed with (throughout their employment). I have been privileged to know many people that worked with him; even when I pressed the "secret" stuff, I was cut down and given just the opposite. I could only wish someone like Walt Disney gave me the opportunities he gave so many.
I've seriously seen an american documentary from around the same time this one was made where the same exact animators were interviewed. Bill Melendez, who in this documentary says all of these things about disney being anti-Semitic, actually praises disney and says that there was little to no evidence that he was anti-Semitic. wierd isnt it.
Disney had standards. Conversely there are those who mock standards and take delight in tearing down, because it's simply all they do. Like Nicholson said in A Few Good Men, "We use words like "honor", "code", "loyalty". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline!" Good for Walt. These people being interviewed are a bunch of whiners.
So the man wasn't perfect. He still was a visionary. Theres a lot to learn from the man and the company, so why not just try to learn from the good? Why waste time hating a dead man? Its not like your gonna get a chance to put him in his place.
Kettle meet the pot. Yeah I saw some of that documentary, it's distributed by disney, produced by Walt's nephew, directed by an actor who's loyal to the disney company. Right and the opposite where its nothing but "Disney good, everything about Disney is good, you should also think Disney is good, don't and you're a communist" eh?
this documentary's just trying to stir up trouble! back in those days, sexism was common and accepted - but it was never the plain reason why Disney had an entirely male animation department. those men were in there because he'd seen their work and they were what he needed. great women animators were not thought of at that time, and disney felt that women had a delicate touch - hence why he got his wife and her friends to paint his early mickey mouse cels.
how terrible, is that really? it is on record, and he forgot all his struggling days, almost steeped in poverty, the moment a person leaves his/her humility get into autocratic mode which wealth resources now can bring consider that a personal down fall and absolutely disliked in general whatever he/she is helming or head of.
This is baseless. These old people can only speak now, I'm sure they sucked up to him when he was alive. Walt Disney was a genius and I'm sure a lot of the accusations shown in this documentary are over exagerrated.
@SkyRifter your wrong pixar is not trying to shut disney down they respect disney and cars was not shit (well cars 2 was) it had the same magic to it ass all disney films have
@DaysThruPictures He hired a mobster to threaten and harass these protesters (including the possibilities of murder), are you saying that isn't what a thug would do? And don't bring your religious crap into this. That has nothing to do with it.
The Tea Partyare constitutional conservatives. It has nothing to do with prejudice. Thar's the opposition wet dreaming of some easy way to dismiss an effective grass-roots popular movement.
Everyone has their quirks and problems. What did you expect Walt Disney the man who made the most wonderful cartoons and movies ever to also be the most wonderful person ever? Lol you're delusional. Everyone was racist back in the 1900's they hadn't had the civil rights movement yet and when that happened everyone sort of got better with it but he did not grow up or experience that everyone had their ideas of racism. You can't expect him to be wonderful.
A cynical look at Studios & " Stars ". Rather tiresome after 30 minutes. If things were as appalling as the narrative maintains Hollywood wood have closed by 1954.
I just want you all to know that one of walt disney's main animators was black. His name was floyd norman. Walt just hired the people who he knew would get the work done with good quality

Watching this just reaffirms my belief in the old saying about people "The brighter the picture...The darker the negative."
agreed. This is nothing more than slander against Walt when he can't defend himself by disgruntled former employees.
It's like there are two types of people here: The ones that love Walt Disney and don't want to hear anything nasty about him and then there are people who see him like some sort of tyrant.
I think he was probably a good man, and mayeb had some nasty and egotistical habits. No one is perfect...
thanks so much for this!
always loved the work of the studio, good to educate people

This documentary is a freakin hatched job! My god they are taking stuff and blowing it WAY out of context
lol Mr mustache reaaalllyyy has a vendetta to settle with a dead man, takes a big man to talk shit about someone that can't stand up for themselves.
It's pretty easy to slander a man when he is not around to defend himself. People will do or say anything to discredit this man. As bad as this world has become, I am still amazed at the lengths that these people will go to in trying to destroy anything good and wholesome. Absolutely amazed!!
You're absolute right!
i luv how at the end of part 2 it says end of part 1 lol
I'm surprised they plowed right through Disney's early years. That's what I want to hear about the most. Snow White should be the second act.
So... You can't hold yesterday's prejudice up to today's standards. That seems to be a popular comment in this thread. That's not really the point. Walt deliberately deceived them into believing he enjoyed the cartoon.
@@j.b.9260 Awe, boo-hoo.
True! And the Sherman Brothers are jewish too! He was NOT an antisemit nor a racist- he was just a normal, really nice guy!
"He's a hindu!" Which is a religion; if the man looked black, and was Indian, ok, but Hindu is a religion.

wow. this is quite a hatchett job.

@YesWeCantaloupe Yeh, i raised my eyebrows there, how they rushed into snow white straight away... It was a long hard road to get to there...
Kettle meet the pot. Yeah I saw some of that documentary, it's distributed by disney, produced by Walt's nephew, directed by an actor who's loyal to the disney company.

...How can you be part a religion? You either are part of a religion or you aren't. Its not a genetic trait that you pass on.
@VeronicaAmbriz28 You're wrong. He was a psychopath.
if Walt Disney was a jew hater why would one of his best lyric writers Howard Ashman (may he rest in peace) be hired ?
nothing about his relationship with ub iwerks?
WOW that F%$# up man.
You can't judge the standards of those days by today's standards of equality.
just because the races were se[erated did not make him racist did he beat them or starve them or hate them?
This is baseless. These old people can only speak now, I'm sure they sucked up to him when he was alive. Walt Disney was a genius and I'm sure a lot of the accusations shown in this documentary are over exagerrated.
