True Disney Fan with all my heart, Walt was a traditional man and it was how he was raised. It sucks that he treated these people poorly because he has made so many good memories for me as a child.
Very well put. It is often shocking to hear about 'the other side' of beloved public figures, and in this clip, it's really shameful that he named names, and in doing so ruined some of his employees careers, seemingly out of sheer bitterness and revenge. The public doesn't like to hear things like that about people they 'think' they know.
I'm not a defender of Walt or the Disney company myself; I don't really care one way or the other. My comment was more of a response to the die-hard Disney fans who insist this documentary was flat-out wrong and that Walt deserves a free pass from scrutiny. I can't speak for whether or not these facts ARE accurate, and I'm not going to claim they are if I can't back that up with other sources. However, I feel deeply for these men and women, and I'm inclined to believe them... so I'm with you!
Looks like FBI agents are taking over the comment section. Walt as a person was a son of a bitch. He was brilliant as a business man and revolutionizing animation. Plain and simple.
there is so much more missing they could've talked about like: his relationship with ub iwerks and art babbit, how his first creation oswalt the lucky rabbit got stolen from him, his unrealized projects like beauty and the beast and little mermaid, the controversy of "song of the south" and probably alot more.
I don't consider myself a Disney scholar by any means, so I wouldn't know either way how many of these facts are accurate, stretched, or flat-out wrong. However, I do think we tend to forget that the people we idolize are still human, and hearing others discuss their faults naturally makes us defensive. There should be nothing wrong with acknowledging someone's faults, yet it seems as if Walt should never be considered anything less than perfect. He was neither a monster nor a god; he was human.
@jarteaga87 Did you had fun? Because if you did it was worth it. No disrespect, but if you were able to make some valuable memories with your family, then there's nothing wrong with it. Specially if you have kids. I still cherish memories from when my family visited the parks 15-20 years ago. Yes Walt was at times a terrible person, but don't let that diminish any found memories. Why waste time hating on Disney when you can spend that time remembering what great time you had with your family.
Walt was not perfect. Walt was a human-being. This documentary is bias and not entirely true, but Walt was never as perfect as his image made him out to be. I'm sure he did feel resentment to the union. I believe the obsession of retaining his power and status he had proved quite heavy for his mind to bear. I believe some of the things he believed and said were irrational and unfair. But there was a very good, and a very brilliant side to him too. I'm glad we remember him for that side.
That's nice & all but really, if thier's one thing that you can take from this documantary is to not idolize or thank walter disney for the films, characters, ideas, & company but, to thank the amazing & talented men & women who MADE THE COMPANY NOT WALTER DISNEY.
all ican say is i admire disney no matter his faults theses people are jealous and are picking a fight now that walt is past away so he cannot respond to this bias documentary im sure of this is fact but not all true. As far as the strikers go dont bite the hand that feeds you you got what you deserved and you stabbed walt disney in the back, so he got you back i dont feel sorry for any of them.
It's a shame this "secret lives" story didn't mention that the same strikers in the 40's were the same people Mr. Disney kept employed, at full salary, during the 30's Depression so they could feed their families and buy nice clothes while most able-bodied men would have given an arm or a leg just for the chance of employment!
Little do most Americans realize, but the american communist party pushed for alot of things we look at as being good now. One of the things they were knowen for was womens rights. If it was not for the communist party women might still be at home today.
Any of us could find four or five people that we pissed off and get a similar documentary about our lives. There is no opposing views and the absence of more people interviewed point to two facts. One this was pointed at presenting one side of things and two that there aren't any other people that agreed with this film.
Who is the guy with the beard and tie? Why is it that he seems like he is a lawyer or something arguing a case against Disney? What does he have against him?
walter disney did not creat the ideas of the company. the men & women thier were the ones that did!. you see, that's exactly what he wanted. he wanted his own face to represent & take credit for every one's ideas & hard work. Him passing away, was the best thing that happened to the company. If epcot the city was made, they would have gone bankrupt for sure!
@Trollingwithmyhomies because they're an elite club that uses intimidation to make more money than other people. I don't hate them as much as others but I'm learning.
One of the most reprehensible acts I can imagine is to accuse a dead man of mal-doing. In the case of this purported "documentary" not only is Walt accused of wrong-doing with evil intent, but no "friendly witnesses" were invited to give the other side of the story in the absence of Walt's ability to answer for or to defend himself. I am not saying that any man is perfect and without flaws, but to do this so-called "documentary" a quarter of a century after his death without presenting both sides of the story and to detract from the reputation of a man who did so much good for both the U.S. and the world, and who would have done so much more apart from his untimely death is as dastardly and malicious acts I can imagine and while it gives the appearance of a documentary, it is anything but a documentary. Shame on the makers and purveyors of this trash. A careful examination of history will show that during this period of American history we were indeed perilously close to falling into the populist notions espoused by communism and those beliefs did permeate many of the trade unions which provides an environment that is very susceptible to the notions it malignantly attempts to portray. The documentary also attempts to portray him as an extreme chauvinist of the worst sort. Observed through 21st Century cultural eyes that certainly appears the case, but examined under the prevalent practices of the time frame in which these "heinous" deeds were committed no man or institution would come out as right. Every single premise of this presentation appears to be concocted by mal-contents who feel they were wrong by Walt Disney, but who have not been subject to the equal scrutiny of their own backgrounds. This is a disgusting farce.
Mike Horton So that wasn't Walt testifying before HUAC? Walt was blaming Hollywood labor conflicts on Communism Infiltration? Walt was specifically naming those individuals by name and accusing them of being communist. Really, you don't see the problem with an employer accusing employees that are labor reps and union reps of communism at that time? You either work for WDC or your afflicted with cognitive dissonance.
No man is perfect by any means. Doesn't matter where you are politically. But this documentary was very biased and hateful against Walt Disney. Plus, A LOT of missing facts were missing. Walt was not against women at all. Does a woman named Mary Blair ring a bell? I have heard about Bill Melendez but I never knew about him disliking Walt which makes me lose respect for him. He did the Peanuts which are "conservative" in nature and yet he did not like Walt who was "conservative" in nature.
The more I hear the word "union" the angrier I get. If you want better pay or better conditions, you don't whine or hold your breath or pout until you get it. You find other work, or a different career.

Like Stan Lee taught us... With great power comes great responsibility (or was it Voltaire, or uncle Ben...)
Interesting stuff - thanks for the upload

Compared to most modern business leaders, Walt Disney is a walk in the park. Geez, people need a spine and look to other sources for truth.
This is a hit piece not a documentary

What he did to David Hilberman was reprehensible. I never drank the Kool-aid on Disney, now I know why.
Fuck with the bull, you get the horns.

Employees said he never showed interest to any woman on the work floor other than his wife, what the hell are you talking about.

Whoever these people are they hated Walt for some odd reason.
".. And on the other.. A son of a bitch"

disney was quite evil. it hurts me a little to say that.

how do u go from cartoons to fbi
And look at the world today
Was it necessary to curse? It really does make this seem unprofessional
Thank You for saying that. I think that many would agree with you. I don't think that he would want to be remembered as a god either.
HIS BROTHER kept them employed in the contract he signed while Walt was out of the country. Perhaps you should research your history.
I'm sick of hearing about the Walt Disney company they just want to be the biggest corporation, his stupid name is everywhere
I'm on Walt's side.
Um, Communism did take hold in our schools and our movies.

People should watch "Walt: The Man behind the Myth" and not this bullshit... -.-
