My parents loved the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals. They had a huge songbook ~ thicker than an inch! My Dad would play piano and they’d both sing! Happy memories truly!
Clara, Back in the mid 60's I performed in my first musical. It was Carousel, I was one of the nasty Snow children. That was on the Alfred University campus, in Alfred, NY. The Rochester Philharmonic was in the pit. Certainly it was a wonderful experience for this 8 year old. A memory I hold dear.
I hear ya! that is fantastic! it was also my first musical at age of 5! such good memories!! played the youngest Snow child at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Woah, some of the dancing and acrobatic moves here are really outstanding, especially on that damn slanted roof which makes it much more difficult!!! A lot of great moves, but perfect example is around 7:40 when the three guys slide onto the roof, then just after when the ladies grab the edge and slide off of it, great moves.
"And the girls who were 'contrary' with the boys in January, aren't nearly so contrary anymore ... " I'd just been trying to recall how they staged this amazing (nine minute) number in the film version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's favorite of their own musicals. (My Mom and Dad were there for their second honeymoon in NYC 1945 when Carousel opened on Broadway -- with Bonnie Raitt's Daddy in the lead role.) In those days there could be nothing openly sexual about a Broadway show number like this one. So. Just count the number of witty, oblique references to 'The Mating Game'! Oscar Hammerstein, like Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter, could come up with one stanza after another just to dazzle us, again and again, with their 'fountain of wit.' I'd say from the shadows, this was staged around 4 p.m. All together now . . . "June is bustin' out all over!" Thanks Rodgers & Hammerstein for sharing. Celebrated elsewhere [search] " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central "
How fortunate for your parents having the opportunity to see the original Broadway version. As for this filmed version, like you I always wonder in amazement at the brilliant choreography and how many takes it all actually took. Appears flawless and magnificent to this viewer!
Robert Hadfield: Why do you have to be ass or better yet a f**king p***k and bring gay into the situation? What does a person’s enjoyment of music or song have to do with their sexuality. There is nothing in the storyline about gay or queer. Leave it alone and enjoy it. Now if after watching it you want to hook up with a guy, that’s your business. Not that there’s anything wrong with it.
Every June 1st I go around singing this song if only to myself! Love this movie.
Same! Except I know the Broadway recording version better (lyrics in a different order)!
I also sing this song..especially during my birthday month!! I jus found out my sister is due in June❤😂❤just amazing!!

Mating is complicated. That said, I love this song and the dances!
I remember my dad singing this when spring started to come into full bloom. What a great time those days were.
So fantastic -- Carousel - the genius of Rodgers & Hammerstein - underrated for sure
