  • In the latest Truetone Lounge episode, we present Justin Ostrander, part of the new crop of session guitarists in Nashville, TN. In our interview, Justin discusses his early years in Topeka, KS and his move to Nashville after completing his studies at the University of Kansas. We continue with his years as a touring guitarist, and how he made the transition into a full-time studio player. We also take a look at some of his favorite gear that includes a 1958 tweed Fender Deluxe amp, Senn Fullerton Strat-style, 1982 Gibson ES-335 dot neck reissue, and a well thought out pedal board built by Xact Tone Solutions in Nashville, TN.

    A bit of advise from someone that didn't take their shot in Nashville.
    I played guitar for Charlie Walker at a small county fair in North Dakota, long after he was popular and was in his 70's. He offered to take me backstage at the Opry and introduce me to the Nashville scene.
    I didn't go. Now at 58 years old, I wish I would have at least took my shot. I don't know if I was good enough or not...never will.
    If you are being honest with yourself and feel like you have a chance, GO....take your shot.
    But be warned. The music business has darn few happy marriages. The road and spouses don't mix well. Which is the biggest reason I left the music business, I wanted a family. For me, I chose well. For someone else, it could be a different story.

    Grew up on zz top and zepplin, switched over to nirvana and soundgarden. Ends up in Nashville, the home of country music. Not knocking this guys chops, but this shows what happened to country music. Today it's essentially classic rock with a fiddle.

      Johnathan, The players here are limited by what the producers and labels allow them to do. Justin can absolutely play great tradtional styles. In fact, he took down my blonde 1967 Tele from the wall after our interview and peeled off a bunch of licks that showed that he is an amazing straight up Tele guy ala Albert Lee or James Burton. The problem is, nobody wants that style of playing right now. Let us hope that things can change, so that the great group of players in town can play what they love. Zac

    • @jonathanbrazee3846
      @jonathanbrazee3846 7 лет назад +1

      Truetone I agree, he is a great player no question. Just saying because he has a more rock background, that's why they want him. Sorry if I sounded critical of his background.

    GREAT episode. I'm a huge huge fan of that Shannon Labrie record, especially the solo on the end of "Political." I'd love to know what guitar, pedals, and amp Justin used on that solo, if possible! Thank you!

    Zac, I have seen some Nashville # charts on line. They look like standard Roman numerals that are used throughout music. What’s am I missing?

    • @TruetoneFX
      @TruetoneFX  3 года назад

      They use 1,2,3,4,5 not I II, III. Also they are used in a way to denote bars and split bars.
