Derek is a great player. His dad Kent Wells played guitar for Dolly Parton for years. His mom Marcia Ramirez has sang backup for some of the biggest names in music and his stepdad Mike Waldron is a great guitar player.
I just love it wehn you do rig run downs of Session Players. I learn so much from these and find insights on things I never would ahve thought of. Not that i don't with toruing musicians but it seems like you have more time to sit down and get into the nuances of everything they use and it gives me ideas for gear that might be useful to me. I would encourage you all to do more!!!
Many thanks to Derek and John for this interview! I've been a fan of Derek for years and had the honor to meet him at 3rd and Lindsley a few years ago when I moved to town. He was so encouraging and gracious with me, and I actually saw him the next night at Basement East. So cool! He's definitely one of my favorite session guys. I'm blessed to now be gigging in and around Nashville and I think about Derek's kindness towards me often.
A John Bohlinger rundown is always the best. I will say I was disappointed I didn’t hear him say “they got it right the first time” about the Tele. Lol.
Another great rundown! That Danelectro baritone with the Senn bridge is the coolest guitar I'll see today..... thanks to everyone at Premier Guitar for cranking these vids out for us🎶
Derek is one of my top guitar heroes and a big inspiration, I've been waiting for this rig rundown! So cool to hear you guys talk guitars and amps. What a great video! Loved the part about J.T too; dissecting his and Derek's awesome parts every day from all my favorite records has made me an immensely better player. Thank you Derek!
This one has been a wealth of knowledge! Thank you! What a great player and appreciate all of the tips on how to be “in the mix” as well as how to be a valuable session player.
My Multiple Sclerosis is making me feel like I'm dying right now, but if I recover enough and I can still play, I'm going to write and record some awesome music before I no longer can. No, I'm not looking for sympathy, I'm just saying what I'm thinking. Never give up!!
I met Derek about 10 years ago playing with Natalie Hemby at Tin Pan South. He was very gracious when I asked about his pedalboard. I live here now. I do find it funny that he begged us on IG to never play/write tracks with those 10ths riffs again... he played them near the end on the Duesenberg. haha! Great interview!
This is such a great rundown. Derek is sharing such great wisdom. There's lot's to be learned by listening in between the lines. Nuance, tone , tuning, all essential building blocks for a successful career.
This interview was a joy to watch - I'm not that familiar with Derek, but I'm definitely a fan now! And of course, John is one of the best in pulling out the best bits in an interview and having a good time while he does it. So much fun to watch to two pros talk shop! Definitely one of the best rundowns I've watched - so good!!! Thanks guys!
Wow. So I am gonna go seek out some of Derek’s work! Amazes me how many stellar players there are “behind the scenes” - you know Brent and Bryan Sutton but I’d never heard of Bukovac until his rig rundown, and now Derek. Such a thoughtful musician and I learned a whole lot today! Inspired me to finally finish my ongoing mini spaceship with a little RJM PBC6x at it’s core!
There’s a video of him going through all his parts on a Scotty McCreary song. Absolutely phenomenal. I’m sure if your search RUclips you can find it. He is a session player stud for sure.
What an amazing player…actually 2 amazing players. I’ve seen Derek’s name on countless credits, so cool to get to know him and his gear. Thanks John! Cheers my friend.
Informative, inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m now looking for a Dano baritone. I would have liked to have heard the Telecaster Fralin neck pickup. Thanks for the shopping list. Great job.
I use the first version Dark Glass, bass compressor! now they make a guitar version, but buying that elevated everything I was doing, for solos, if I’m playing rhythm, I turn it off, sustain is maxed, but no added color, I had a boss, sloppy/messy sound by comparison, adds color & distortion, where the dark glass does not.
How do you find an original Telecaster with a neck pickup a Lindy Fraland Vintage Telle and a bridge pickup pulled out of a old fender lap steel that's not a reissue or custom shop?
Session players are awesome and Derek is certainly one of the best out there. I have always wanted to know who the musicians were that was playing from the time I was a kid. The old stuff with Jerry Reed, Harold Bradley, Grady Martin to Brent Mason, JT Corenflos, Tom Bukovac, Brent Rowan and Derek among others. The musicians are what has always interested me.
Ok, so what is the second expression pedal (not the volume pedal or the digitech all in one) that allows him to create a lapsteel effect? That was never mentioned...
Hallo Derek, Does your Gretsch 6120 have a hole in the back with a rubber cover? You Gretsch is hard to find exactly what modal 6120 you have! Could you elaborate? Thank You, Alan
Nice guy and a great player. Funny how everyone on RUclips has amazing guitars. There are dogs out there, but they are always someone else's. Saying that, I'm the same. I think all my guitars are great. The one that I thought was a dog (a MIM Tele) I sold and the guy that bought it said it was amazing. Maybe we just have different tastes.
That gauge stays in tune for the engineer - and the way he uses his fingers for light feel - session guys are loved for consistency in tone and tune- not absolutely for chops - it’s presentation of sonic pieces
Cheers
Great rig! You should be able to use the G3 and an expression pedal to control any pedal in the loops of the G3. Don't need that separate pedal. See ruclips.net/video/a6KOBODrrzY/видео.html
I have an Expressionator and it’s my poor man’s Gigrig. However, it has a very analog feel to it, so I understand why he wanted to keep it. No scenes. Just tactile ease of use.

Love you fellas.
Never heard of this guy and I’m not a country fan, but what a great session. John did a great job of letting his guest talk and drawing him out.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Cheers!

Agreed. The session guy rundowns are some of my favorites. Their knowledge and explanations of things are on a different level
@@allstopblue5717100%
It’s taken me awhile to learn session players are the best guitar players. They make the music and Derek is no exception. Seems like a great dude!
Thanks for the kind words. Appreciate that. Cheers!
They’re not all this good. Some are just OK. But thus guy’s a badass.
It’s a different talent than songwriting or performing live- water flows and finds a niche for everyone who works hard at music-
Many thanks to Derek and John for this interview! I've been a fan of Derek for years and had the honor to meet him at 3rd and Lindsley a few years ago when I moved to town. "60 years old technology"
They did, in fact, get it right the first time! Could’ve stopped there!
Ive been waiting for this for WEEKS! thank you
Another great rundown!
That Danelectro baritone with the Senn bridge is the coolest guitar I'll see today..... thanks to everyone at Premier Guitar for cranking these vids out for us🎶
I just LOVE rig rundowns! This guy is awesome and such a joy to listen to.
This is an all-timer. Appreciate Derek going through the why on top of the sounds.
This is pure Gold. So much valuable information.
That baritone sounded incredible.
Great job! Really good insight into how the sausage gets made in Nashville!! John B is the best interviewer in the music business.
Thank you John! Thank you Derek! Thank you Uncle Larry!
Derek is awesome!! Great interview by Mr B. As well!!👍🏾
Appreciate it, man.
Derek is one of my top guitar heroes and a big inspiration, I've been waiting for this rig rundown! So cool to hear you guys talk guitars and amps. What a great video! Great interview; great content. John’s the best host.
This one has been a wealth of knowledge! Thank you! What a great player and appreciate all of the tips on how to be “in the mix” as well as how to be a valuable session player.

One of the best players, rigs and rundowns, wow!

Appreciate it, man. Very kind.
wow, what a great episode!!!!!! Thank you.
What an amazing player…actually 2 amazing players. I’ve seen Derek’s name on countless credits, so cool to get to know him and his gear.
Thanks John!
Cheers my friend.
Thanks for watching, Charles. Appreciate it.
this was next level . . . so great!
Been waiting for this! What a player and a really nice guy👍🏻 guess you need to be successful in both to be a top session player
Thanks for the kind words. John makes these things go so smooth.
Love this guy. He’s on an absolute ton of mainstream country fm radio songs whether you know it or not
Started following Derek when he worked with Josh Turner. He has skills.
What a great tone and taste plqyer!
i knew Derek when we were younger. A nice guy and a super player.
Miss you man!
@@Derwreck12I miss you too! I’m sitting here watching your rig rundown while trying to steal some of your licks😂
What a cool guy. Not too familiar with the big session guys been from the UK, always impressed by the knowledge and playing.
Dude is a master of his tradecraft.
Wicked interview as usual. Cheers.
Great rundown!
Really enjoyed this one. Neat dude
I had watched the video on XTS created his pedalboard earlier today.
Good stuff.
Love to hear some of the sounds that you talk about.
Mission engineering makes great stuff!🙂
Informative, inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m now looking for a Dano baritone. I would have liked to have heard the Telecaster Fralin neck pickup. Thanks for the shopping list. Great job.
Man, sorry I didn’t get to that- but I can tell you- BUY WITH CONFIDENCE. Haha. I prefer the “vintage tele” sets that he offers.
XP (All) FTW!
When he played the barritone, first thing I heard was Josh Turner. Great!
That LP SG sounds great. I don’t understand why they can’t duplicate it.
John, you seem truly into this. Is there anything left for you to learn?
You know when you're talkin to a session guy when he keeps selling his ideas with "again..." 😂
Just like myself.....feet right there, and still reaches down with hand to engage pedal!😂

What an inspiring rundown - Def need to get an expression pedal on my delay mix. Thanks!
Ok, so what is the second expression pedal (not the volume pedal or the digitech all in one) that allows him to create a lapsteel effect? That was never mentioned...
I've had a couple EHX pedals with the same problem 😢
Hallo Derek, Does your Gretsch 6120 have a hole in the back with a rubber cover? You Gretsch is hard to find exactly what modal 6120 you have! Could you elaborate? Thank You, Alan
Did we power the micro synth properly? Usually those require funny power I thought.
Yup. Happy to report that EHX has already reached out to repair it!
Nice Rolex Derek!
I want an SG guitar so bad
Derek, you could transcribe this and have a book half done. Thanks for the insight.
Appreicate you watching and the kind words. Cheers.
Singer’s gotta nice hat (Friars!)!
Interesting there's no Strat.
I liked this dudes shoes so I tried to find them. If they are Visvim, that's a $1,100 pair of sneakers! Good for him, he's an inspiring player.
Tone is in the shoes.
501ChorusEcho - where have I heard that before?🤔
Nice guy and a great player. Funny how everyone on RUclips has amazing guitars. There are dogs out there, but they are always someone else's. Saying that, I'm the same. I have some shitty ones too! They just didn’t make the video. 😂
Can anybody name that digitech pedal?
It’s an XP1000 by jet pack mods
Please leave the camera view on the pedalboard for more than .5 seconds!
That gauge stays in tune for the engineer - and the way he uses his fingers for light feel - session guys are loved for consistency in tone and tune- not absolutely for chops - it’s presentation of sonic pieces
Can yall do a john fruscainte guitar rig rundown

Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-delay!
Pretty sure there is an audible fart at one hour, twelve min.
And all made possible by synthetic sweat...who knew
EHX fail
I love Maren Morris's plastic surgery.
