SkiErg Technique & Movement Efficiency

- The Concept 2 SkiErg is a great tool to use to enhance both muscular endurance and aerobic capacity, along with transfer to other movements in the gym. However in order to get the most benefit, we need to ensure that we are using the SkiErg correctly. Coach Jim Leuenberger, along with Coach Pete Nelson, not only cover the points of performance but also demonstrate common faults and how to correct them to ensure appropriate positions and maximum efficiency. No snow? No skis? No problem.

Really appreciate the time that Coach Jim took to go over what many athletes might assume is a simple movement. Thank you coaches.
I spent 10 minutes on the ski erg this morning, and my lower back is feeling it now.
Dirtkahuna, I agree. I cross country ski both on track and off and have for many years, using multiple techniques (skating included). I’ve used Nordic Track in the past. The online guidance seems to be focused on a very narrow style of using this piece of equipment. Using a classic double poling inspired technique, as well as varying arm movements and swim-derived technique, I am getting a great workout. Not sure about these videos.
I used this the other day! 😀👊🏻
Thanks a lot coach
Great work as always guys - but even better job on the faults and corrections!
The technique demonstrated here might generate maximum power on the SkiErg, but it's not the proper technique for actual xc skiing double poling.
I thought the same thing. I was like, "that's not right!" I think they should redo this one. Some points are correct (what not to do) but the demonstration of the correct form is way off.
Thanks guys
Sounds like Coach Jim needs to get on BFA Radio :)
This machine has “Ski” in its name - shouldn’t the workout at least to some degree resemble what you actually do with the poles in XC? Or what’s the point of this?
Can’t wait to order one
Why are CrossFit skrierg technique so different from those athletes that are Nordic skiers?
Cause CrossFit people are shit at every sport with their ridiculous techniques
Not sure butterflying leads to less consistent strokes. If you are consistently butterfly returning, each stroke will be the same?
Jim "go ahead and rest" Leuenberger
i just started to use this, but I'm not sure where the fly wheel should be set at ..i tried to set up at a 5 and i had sharp pain in my abdomen today i used it at a 9 and i didn't have much pain. what's the big difference
Thanks 4 Sharing My Brotha.
Using this technique all you’ll get is a sore back it’s supposed to be like skiing not squats
Hi Jim. If you look closely at the movement pattern, it is much more a hinge, not a squat. Thanks for taking a look.
is this true skierg technique? I remember being taught differently years ago. This looks more like crossfit 'chimp smash'
Hi Maza! Who did you learn from and how did they teach you. The only way this deviates from Concept 2 is that we practice full extension of the elbow versus keeping it bent. Definitely know what you mean by chimp smash but that isn't very effective or proper :)
I can tell you guys don’t ski.
I am considering buying either this or the Concept 2 model E. Not exactly the same machines I know. My main interest is burning calories, I am very fat. Which of the two would you recommend? I started looking at this due to the much lower cost (about 30% here) and because would not take as much room and since I work with a computer most of the day I think it might do me a bit more good not having to sit down again as I would with the model E. Of course I wouldn't be able to stand up as long as sit down due to my weight...but yeah.
But, burning calories is my number one concern.
We definitely recommend reaching out to a qualified and reputable coach in your area first to determine the best program for you and your goals.
Ketogenic diet. 90% of weight loss is nutrition. Unless you do something obsessively like CrossFit.
@@PeterCharlesworth100% of weight loss is nutrition
No wonder I was so inefficient when I tried the ski erg and burnt out so quickly.
Glad we could help!
Oh , dear ..........
Looks f#@k all like skiing. Shouldn't hands be closer to hips. Not even sure how I got here, started off watching cats v cucumbers
This "proper technique" might be fine for some other training, but what is taught her is totally wrong for training for Nordic skiing. In fact, this is almost damaging advice for a Nordic skier. This is so scary wrong that a caveat should be posted. Pure and simple damaging information. We haven't skied that way in fifty years. Personally, I do not know what this approach would benefit. This is called a SKI ERG for a reason. It should be used to help skiers improve their technique and develop the muscles used in that sport. This is not a JockERG to be used to develop bulk. This is just disgusting. Both of these men need some serious training on specificity.
"Proper" form?
For what?
(This certainly does not look like an actual cross-country ski movement)
To avoid injury? To get in shape? To generate more power? In the latter case, who cares?
Dubious.
