It's almost been a year since are brief stay in Sedona and here I am still working on the videos smh... (I've been "busy", okay?!?)
But for real though, this hike in Sedona, Arizona was one of the major highlights of our entire road trip. We started off at a busy trailhead that shares a parking lot with the Devil's Bridge trail, which gets ridiculously busy, and quickly left the crowds to hike on the Lizard Head Trail before leaving that one to take a social route up to the top of Capitol Butte (Thunder Mountain).
Once we left the Lizard Head Trail the route goes up, up, and up some more. When you think the trail can't get any steeper and you think you're close to the top before reaching a false summit and realize you were still on the "easy" part of the hike. After that you have a decent amount of scrambling to do before reaching the summit. Even though the hike got difficult for us Angie and I powered through and made it to the top where we were rewarded with amazing 360° views. We could see all of Sedona and it's beautiful red rock canyons below us and Humphrey's Peak (AZ's highest point) off in the distance.
We enjoyed a rest and a snack on top of Capitol Butte before heading back down, which even though it was easier than going up still proved to be tiresome and difficult. I only recommend this trail for serious and experienced hikers, there are some spots where class 3 scrambling is required and navigating the trail can be difficult as well. Even with the map downloaded on my phone we found ourselves away from the trail on more than one occasion but due to our experience with difficult hikes we were able to keep calm and find our way back to clear path each time.
Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoy this video and it inspires you to plan your own adventures.
This hike is in the Coconino National Forest and a Red Rock Pass is required to park at many of the trailheads. Annual interagency passes, senior passes, and military passes can all be used in place of the Red Rock Pass as well.

Please people, do NOT attempt this hike. People die on mountain regularly, even those that have summitted 100’s of times. I have witnessed many helicopter rescues as a local. This is not a safe hike if you’re inexperienced.

Thanks for the concern but I think it's shown clearly in the video that this is NOT an easy hike. And if it's not clear enough in the video I wrote it down in the description. Lol
We enjoyed this hike, you can have the easy hikes with the big crowds 🤙
