YESS!! Start a boat maintenance series! We have a 34' Sea Ray in Corpus Christi City Marina (waaay cheaper, by the way) that we're planning to move onto once the kid graduates. Trying to learn as much as we can before then.
Just found your channel and already love it. I'm a yacht tech and you guys are right, you save a ton of money doing anything on a boat yourself. You also learn about your boat and that helps later on when something goes wrong you already have a good idea of what it could be and how to fix it. That way you are not calling for help everytime. Hope you guys have a great time on this adventure.
Had my brand new Mainship 36 for 10 years. Replaced batteries bent props and the usual maintenance. Bought it new in 1988. Anything i did to the boat was not repairs just improvements to my liking. Did not have to spend any extra cash.

I never realized that you pay marinas by the foot. That's so interesting. I would think that campgrounds would do the same for an RV, but that's not the case. I guess there's more land space than water space that's livable. Very interesting conversation. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! Boats are expensive. We are thinking sail boat. Even then you have the expenses, only you get some free travel on the wind. The insurance information was enlightening. Until our adventures cross,fair winds and full sails. Jack and Billie
Hey guys no free travel with sails , unless you are crossing an ocean or doing huge miles .maintaining winches,sails and rigging just to keep insurance coverage is not cheap ,

Your numbers are shocking. at 4.5 g/hr and figure 18 hrs a day is an operational cost of 320.4/day and "just to say" you did it everyday that is a yearly cost of 114062.4.. WOW.. also 1200 a month for marina life almost seems like the trawler life is a crazy expensive life compared to a land life. ... now I understand why all those boats are just sitting and not cruising
That 4.5 gal a hour was cruising. Only about 1 gal an hour for generator, and run it about 10 hours a day. Oh my goodness. Didn't realize was gave that impression. We definitely couldn't do that
And that's a high assumption with our generator. Each engine burns about 2 gal an hour while cruising. It isn't cheap. But our 185 Hp engines are much more efficient than the higher hP ones

The simple fact is that it cost 320.00 dollars a day to cruise. on average how many days do you plan to cruise? 100? once you leave the keys and take the 90 -130 mile run to the bahamas at 8 knots is somewhere between 400 -650 dollars for that cruise. That hard cost was my point and scared the pants off my dog!! I apologize I went that far with it but I also was blow away by how little I actually understood about the cost associated with cruising. I am in the research phase of my journey but would rather free fall but that doesn't seem logical if one plans to actually leave the dock. Glad to see that yall are slowly escaping the insanity of the dry land...God Bless!!
1/2 gallon an hour under partial load for a generator is fairly average and decent. Are you running your generator while underway? Do you have an inverter? If you have an inverter then you shouldn’t necessarily have to run your generator while underway. Check out putting flexible solar panels on your Bimini Top.
Insurance pays for your boat if you sink, catch fire or it’s stolen, you bump into an expensive boat or someone hurts themselves on your boat that’s not you……

Great video, starting to plan now. Thinking of attempting the great loop, but after this, I probably need to have to put some more in the account. My question for maintenance is, how big of a tool box do you maintain for most of you nautical needs? My tool set is kind of big with almost every imaginable power tool.
That's a great question about tools. I may do a video on that for you. But the short answer is. Lots of cordless tools. Lots of spare parts, clamps and hoses.
Insurance plus marina plus boat payment plus ect....... sounds alot like a lot of people are living off you, my answer is buy boat with cash and for the price of everything just buy a peice of a lake or whatever as for electric buy a Honda generator for water I buy it by the case but for bathing filtration is a must so instead of supporting a team of deadbeats and fork out 80-100k a year do pay cash buy your area and you could live pretty cheap.
I'm sure there is an option for international insurance that doesn't require so much switching, in saying that it may only be for sailboats. But I'm just guessing 🤷

As far as our limitations, being reliant on diesel we have the capacity to cover about 1000km before needing more fuel. That will be our biggest limitations... and how scared Jolene gets in weather. (We are fair weather cruisers)

Can you not just haul fuel from a regular station? I know that would be a lot of extra work...but it would be $2-3 less per gallon based on what you are saying.
@@user-dr2pg8fk2i you can order a truck and that's cheaper if you can find somewhere they can get close to your boat.. but alot has to do with location. And off road diesel is not the same as pump diesel.. pump diesel has biodiesel and that can cause Soooo many problems in a boat!
In my fantasies I would get a B32 power cat from Bering Yachts with a crew..... Otherwise if I had $400k to spend on a boat I would get a catamaran for the stability and the ability to have the huge range with the sails. If your budget is less than $100k like ours and your not trying to circumnavigate the planet I would still get a trawler. We DO NOT like heeling and so will never own a monohull sailboat. We have found that we really like the space and layout of our trawler. With our covered back deck layout, we find that our boat ends up being the one everyone gathers at. The biggest thing with the trawler is understanding what conditions you are comfortable going out in and which you are not. The boat can handle way more than we can. Thanks for watching. We have taken 2 kids to the Dr. here in the Bahamas for an ear infection and hives (fish allergy reaction) the cost was so reasonable. This is a great topic and a very popular one. Best way to yacht is small hp at 7 to 9 knots than big boys that run 45 knots but burn 1200 gallons in 16 hours Funny u go hey you enjoy the trip from Charleston to Bahamas hell no I was holding on for life lol at 45 knots I rather do 7 and then ask you be amazed what folks say speed junkies lol I LIKE YALL STYLE

Your comments about fuel consumption and engine choice are right on the money. On our first boat we didn't take engine size or fuel consumption into consideration. We ended up burning 10-12 gallons per hour at 8-9 knots. Fuel consumption also killed our available range so our next boat will have smaller engines similar to what you have. The big jump in diesel actually happened between 2017 and 2018. They're actually less now than in October 2018. I guess administrations have nothing to do with it.

We occasionally run the generator while underway, only to run the ACs. Otherwise yes, your correct, No reason.
Yes, we have an inverter. It's just not strong enough to run the AC.

Maybe a better question is what is a good boat insurance company?
We used a boat broker for the first year, they ended up using Concept for insurance. We currently have State Farm.

@@yetivanmarshall1473 We know several other cruisers who use international health care for their health needs and it is very reasonable. We have taken 2 kids to the Dr. here in the Bahamas for an ear infection and hives (fish allergy reaction) the cost was so reasonable. This is a great topic and a very popular one. Best way to yacht is small hp at 7 to 9 knots than big boys that run 45 knots but burn 1200 gallons in 16 hours

Sometimes it would be nice to have a little extra speed if needed. But we still manage just fine. We have also discovered that our 8 knots is still faster that all our other cruising friends in their sailboats. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Journey!
Your comments about fuel consumption and engine choice are right on the money. On our first boat we didn't take engine size or fuel consumption into consideration. We ended up burning 10-12 gallons per hour at 8-9 knots. Fuel consumption also killed our available range so our next boat will have smaller engines similar to what you have. At least we are safe an Alive. Now we just gotta not end up homeless....so as we survive this hand we've been dealt.
