    Hey, I grew up with the Fantastic Four. I would say they are my team. When I got into comics it was the early 90's and I hated every current Marvel comic on the market at the time, so I raided 80's back issues. John Byrne Fantastic Four was my first exposure to the team, and they have been my favorite team ever since.

    If we are talking favorite teams, for me it was the original Excalibur and the Teen Titans. Unfortunately both fell under the weird habit of the big two putting writers on them as a form of punishment. "Oh, you don't like that book? Well then you can fix it or you're fired."

  • @bradwatkins7564
    @bradwatkins7564 4 года назад +2

    I love how Sal hates the Avengers/JLA era of using second string characters, because i'm a little bit older and I see how that makes it different..according to one's POV. Like..the reasons why he does not like it was the reason I did as a kid. It's interesting to me as I find i 90% agree with Sal and seems to have read alot of the same titles at the same times.
    The second stringers eras came out of writers trying to make lemonade out of lemons. Editorial mandates and the creeping power of the marketing and sales departments made reading some of those early 80's JLA stories frustrating because the big characters with their own books were often away in their own titles....so you mostly were reading the second stringers anyways. So to me,as a kid.... it was them finally just being honest. lol.
    So, at the time , I like the JLA-Detroit era all the way into the post Giffen/Dematteis JLI era and even kinda liked the "Leather Jacket Avengers"...but I also admit that
    1. The reasoning was flawed as keeping Cap out of Avengers does not mean more people will read Cap.
    2. Bad writing will kill any line up no matter how good or bad. The CROSSING killed Avengers and the JLA's audience got needlessly split into 3 teams and two of them were awful. "JLTF was interesting".
    3. Sadly, by taking the big sellers off the titles, the titles got less attention in company-wide storylines. They began to treat them like second stringers and the audience could feel that.
    So, by the time you were reading....it had gone on waay too long and like i said before...bad writing trying to be X-Men, instead of being what they were about and who they were.

    • @comicpop
      @comicpop  4 года назад +2

      That's the thing. By the time I showed up, the premiere teams were full of characters who had their time, and then were pushed into boxes they were never going to fit into. There's some great stuff from across the decades, but the day-to-day stuff had some pretty rough times.

    • @bradwatkins7564
      @bradwatkins7564 4 года назад +1

      @@comicpop I can't disagree with you and be intellectually honest. lol.
      I will only add that I think what may actually have been a bigger problem was that Avengers, Fantastic Four and JL-A-EJ-TF were not just trying to imitate the X-Men/Image look cosmetically but also in story content.
      I mean the Avengers during this time were dealing with a "mysterious" villain "Proctor" who is actually one of them "Han Solo-Black Knight" from a dark and gloomy " alternate timeline, followed by the adult future versions of children "Luna and Tuc" coming back to the past from a horrible future...blah blah blah.
      Over in Fantastic Four, almost the exact same plot with Hyperstorm, Teenage Franklin and Nathaniel Richards.
      ETC...ETC....ETC...
      I think that the Leather Jacket Avengers line up could have actually made it...if they had actually let them be the AVENGERS.

    I would love to see Jack Flagg and Major Victory on Guardians again. Sal and I seem to have opposite tastes. I loved cosmic marvel in the 90s. Sal digs on X-factor investigations from time to time, and its one of my favorite runs from an x-men spinoff which... ironically has both Wolfsbane and Strong guy on it. But at least we can both agree that we both love comics.

    1 X-Men until about 2000 or so....not so much after although uncanny x force was nice....nowadays to many time displaced characters,to many events,don't like trying to combine xmen and avengers together either just dilutes the stronger brand(xmen)
    2 New Teen titans especially perez run
    3 Fantastic Four great book loved it in the 80s and she hulk made for a surprisingly nice fit when ben was away..the early run was great as well introduced so many key characters galactus,the watcher,silver surfer you name it
    I like the runaways,birds of prey,suicide squad,classic new mutants and Excalibur.

    This isn't really an established team like Avengers or Teen Titans but they are still a team. Ant-Man's Security Solutions team, Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Grizzly, Machinesmith and Mrs Morgenstern, and then you also had Miss Thing and Beetle that would sort of help out now and again. Just a real fun team to read about. I'm not saying this is the best team in comics, it's just one of my favourites.

    I know Sal and Joel might of not been fans of the X-men Prime issue that came out this week, but I though it was actually pretty good. I think it is a much better starting point for the X-men in the Marvel Universe. Other than the comparisons to the Inhumans thing at the beginning it which they might of took to seriously. It is basically a rebirth for the X-men where they are actually going to be relevant.

    JSA (Robinson-Goyer-Johns era)
    Shadowpact
    Legion of Superheroes (Levitz era)
    Autority (Ellis-Millar era)
    JLI (Giffen era and New52 version wasn't bad either)
    Marvel:

    Avengers (I actually like late 90's - early 2000 era, Bendis ruined Avengers for me)

      I liked the idea of Aquaman leading a team years before Justice League: Origin. It also gives some context for why he suggests he be the leader of the League when they first get together. Technically, the was the only one who had any previous leadership experience. And the neat idea that his trident was one of seven (I think) ancient relics and each of his teammates had a piece, each that granted some mystical ability.

    What's up guys?! I'm Sal from Comic Pop here to tell you that I think everything DC does in film and television suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks! Why? Because it just does!! That's why. How do I know this? Because of my super comic book knowledge! What's that? Am I a film and television expert? Why do I need to be? With my super comic book knowledge I automatically know if a show or movie is crap or not and you can all trust me to steer you clear of those shitty ass TV shows and movies like Legends of Tomorrow and Batman v Superman. No, don't form your own opinion or think for yourself! I know better than you. *flies away "Super Saaaaaal!!"
    Sometimes I wonder if any of the people who do the weekly pull actually LOVED any DC movie in the past 10 years. These guys remind me of this guy who helps this old couple run their comic book shop. Based on some of the conversations I've had with this guy and some things I've overheard him say, I'd swear he almost sees selling DC books as a necessary evil to be able to also sell Marvel books. Sometimes based on how badly Sal and the gang bash DC for everything except Rebirth (apparently), I almost think they do videos about DC Comics as a necessary evil in order to make Marvel related videos and not lose a large viewership. It's really sad because I am well aware of the fact that these guys know way more about comics than I ever will, yet they don't seem to be stoked about seeing Batman and Superman fight, or the Justice League getting together in live action for the first time. They always gotta be sure to tell you everything that's wrong with the movies. I think Sal is a damn smart guy when it comes to comics, but boy oh boy, does he like shitting on everything DC film and television! You too Joel. You've made it quite clear how much you hate the living shit out of the DCEU.

      kevrulz06 he doesn't shit on it cause it's DC, he shits on it when it's bad, you're just letting your fan boism cloud your judgement. He's mentioned many time that he loved Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Justice league unlimited, the Nolan films, etc. But all you see is him talking warranted shit about the shitty things DC puts out, if we all suck WB's dick because they put DC characters on screen they'll keep putting out garbage like BVS and Man of Steel and hiring people who openly hate superheros to direct like Mr Michael Bay lite...

  • @sodajerkclassic

    I think my three favorite teams are the Avengers, Teen Titans and the Doom Patrol. I was never a big fan of the Justice League and Batman is my favorite hero despite being a member of the JLA. It was great that in the JLA animated series he was seen as a sort of part timer or simply an ally for the team.
    Also the Avengers and Titans have great battle cries such as Avengers Assemble! and Titans Together! nuff said
    Hey Joel that Teen Titans comic you were thinking of was entitled the Runaways and I believe that it was a two parter. Also the story ends badly in case your really interested.
