  • Now that I have experience with both the vintage and modern S&W revolvers, I can definitely say that IMHO it all boils down to which one you prefer. As far as shooting enjoyment and functionality is concern they are both great revolvers. It is simply a matter of personal preference.
    Thanks for watching...

    The frame of the new 686 is slightly larger in the area above the cylinder release. This was done to house the frame mounted firing pin. Also, please note that the hammer is buried further in the new gun when it is in the resting position

    • @mr2275cur
      @mr2275cur  4 года назад +5

      Mr. Tom, you are absolutely correct on both observations. I knew the hammer was deeper set because of it's design; but I really have never noticed the difference the frame area above the cylinder release. That was really the first time that I'd actually compare the two side-by-side. I attributed the appearance as being a "forced visual prospective" caused by the slimmer tapered thumb-piece. Thank you Sir very much for pointing that size difference out to me...!!!!

    I have watched literally hundreds of pistol videos, and you are the first person to give a name to the "cylinder stop lug" (@ 5:04). Thank you! Now I know what to research! (The vintage gun probably weighs slightly more because it only has 6 holes drilled in it, whereas the newer gun has 7. The vintage gun has six flutes cut into the cylinder, whereas the new gun has 7.)

  • @ddaman2442
    @ddaman2442 2 года назад +4

    Weight differences could also partly be explained by the additional cavity in the 7 shot vs. the 6 (more metal removed for 7th round).

    • @mr2275cur
      @mr2275cur  2 года назад +2

      You are correct. I weight difference will vary according to which "dash" models are in the comparison. But I believe there is a slight difference of an ounce or two.

    I think it has to do with sentimentality. Knowing that you're shooting a revolver from the 60s or 70s in 2023 is something great. I appreciate the fact that these guns are still handcrafted by experts. The old revolvers simply have style. Today, these revolvers are rather a loveless mass product. That doesn't mean they're bad, but it's not the same anymore and never will be again. You always hear that the new revolvers are more stable and that many advances have been made in metallurgy. That's probably true, but you know what? I've been shooting my 29-2s often and regularly for decades with powerful loads (but not psychopath loads) and the revolvers are still doing their job today without any limitations and will probably continue to do so for decades to come. Folks, get your old classics out of the safe, enjoy the old iron and shoot them, because that's what they were built for! Happy shooting!

    Thank you for comparing an older 686 with a newer 686 Plus. It was very helpful. Your revolver collection is amazing, as is your knowledge! I only have three S&W revolvers but they are wonderful: a 6" Model 19-3 I bought in 1976 , a 2.5" Model 66-2 (1982) and a brand new 4" Model 686-6 Plus. And a new production Colt Python 4.25". I love all of them but must say the L-frame and 7th round make the new 686 Plus stand out, so I choose it as best. The Model 19 and Python are just too pretty to risk dinging up and the Model 66 is a little small. The 686 Plus is in the Goldilocks zone, just right! And the extra round is the icing on the cake. Thanks again for all your great videos.

    As usual, excellent video. I mentioned in another video you posted that I have a 4 in verson (-6). I’ll never use the trigger lock, so I replaced the release with a Tromix stainless one. It completely covers the lock hole and is a drop in item.
    I also replaced the tiny hammer with a wide, low-setting S&W target hammer. Again, a drop in part with no modification.
    Now, my 686 is not only aesthetically more beautiful than an “old” model, but in my opinion, is built better than the older models.
    MIM parts are extremely strong and are hardened through all the way instead of 6 or 7 thousandths of an inch on forged parts. In addition, the old hammer nose mounted (firing pin) was and is prone to breakage or bending. That usually isn’t an issue with a frame mounted firing pin.
    Don’t get me wrong, I like old Smiths and own several. But old isn’t always better. 👍

    I’ve got to agree with you on the New Vs. The Old Sir!!! Personally I’d like to have the older model because the hammer and actual gun was just made a little bit better to me. However as a S&W Fan/Man the newer are mighty nice as well especially the extra round which if you are old like me I tend to forget they have one more round as opposed to The 6 Shot Revolvers!!! I saw a lot of them, but never owned one. They've since corrected the problems and that's no longer an issue as far as I know. S&W in just any other manufacturer. They sometimes make design or manufacturing errors. I don't have any concerns with the two S&W modern revolvers I currently have. Early revolvers had issues too, but there wasn't any social media platforms back then to publicly excoriate them on about it.

      Kevin The Great the grips he has on it are what they came with the vast majority of the time. I saw one picture online of one that came with the magna (panel) grips and I saw one at a big gun show that had magnas as well, but this is usually what the 686 and 596 snubs came with. The grips look great and that's how it is supposed to be. I thought I'd really like those style grips, because I thiught they were nice and thin. I finally found a gun with them to hold and they are large for my liking but they are pretty popular and they sell for a lot just by themselves. I have all magna grips on my Smiths because I like being able to wrap my fingers all the way around the butt of the gun like I'm choking it to death lol. They just feel great and look great on pretty much any Smith at least up to a 4 inch barrel. Even a 4 inch 581/681 and a 4 inch 586/686 look great.
