...We have seen many new claims for best trail running shoe of 2021 but for me its an older model which stands the test of time, the Scott Supertrac RC was my favourite trail and sky running shoe of all time. As such, any new iteration was going to fall short but the Supertrac RC 2.0 just builds on the success of its predecesor.
After 500 miles of Trail running, Fell running and sky running in races and every day training through Summer and Winter this shoe has stood the test of time. Today I give you my honest opinion, where the shoe breaks down, why I am still wearing it (despite the outsole being crushed to a pancake) and why I keep coming back for more.

My fave shoe ever! The radial tread pattern is unbeatable. This shoe has the best traction action of any shoe in any conditions. It works really great in the mud and slippery wet clay we have here in upstate NY. It also performs better than anything I've tried and I've tried a lot on the anorthosite rocks in the Adirondack High Peaks were I've worn this shoe to several summits. It also grips well in the gnarly, rock trails in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Also known locally as "Rocksylvania". I've worn it successfully at the Hyner Trail Challenge 50K several times. The new upper is much better. I've not had it crack either. Also, the yellow rubber parts have not separated like happened on the original RC. I'm only amazed by your tread wear. I have over 1000 miles on these and I've never had them look like that. To me that is really interesting because I obviously weigh a lot more than you. I'm a Clydesdale if there ever was one. I really hope that @scottrunning keeps producing great shoes with this unbeatable, radial tread pattern. Heck Yeah! 👍🏼👍🏼💯💯❤❤

Great review, found your channel after searching for a trail shoe with better ankle support after a bad strain and wanted something to give me my confidence back off road. Gonna pick a pair of these up asap.

Great review Darren, I managed to pick a pair of these up a few ago after wqtching this video for £50. Love the shoes. They're working really well for me running steep coastal paths in the South West and White Cliffs in Kent. Have been using Peregrines for a few years but these feel so much more grounded and nimble. Have done a few forwat runs abdbthey qork really well on rutted paths and rooty singletrack.
I made the same transition many years ago from Peregrine to Supertrac and they're a real step up. Cracking durability too, while the grip has gone I am still using this pair for easy short runs after 700 miles!
That's insane. I have Supertrac RC2 and I signed up for Transvulcania Ultra this year and for some reason I was thinking that maybe 73km might be too much in these shoes, but looks like I have a perfect choice for this race. Really love these shoe.
Yes when they originally designed the shoe it was made with that course in mind and tested on the course too...perfect for it.
@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning Just bought my third pair for good price in case I won't find it anywhere later. Have 580km + 500km in old ones and these still look pretty fresh.

Have you done SuperTrac Ultra review! - just bought that to solve the problem of collapsing EVA support in c700k’s..my knees are taking strain especially I have old RC’s!
Yes would be nice to have a little more cushioning & maybe carbon feedback…😬! But happy client in the SA Cape Town trails…(winter wet & dry summers)
The Scotts are definitely one of very few shoes I can pick up on any day in any conditions and it'll at least get me round.
I have not review the Supertrac Ultra as I tried them but way too rigid for me personally and clumpy. The Eva issue is what keeps me looking for an alternative shoe. I'm now trying the Inov-8 G270 with a 4mm heel rise stuck in (I don't like zero drop) and they seem to be much better for durability but not as good grip pattern on the bottom, again much more durable but not the same deepish lugs.
@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning 👍yep you right - they do look clumpy - but will see how they go once I have broken them in! I’m alternating with SuperTrac RC which I’ll use for racing then on marathon and below…!
Hi Darren! Great channel, and really enjoying your reviews of shoes that I love and run in, but are seldom available or seen in the USA. I ran several seasons in the first Supertrac RC, which was around the time when Scott pulled their shoes from the States, but now they are back at several retailers in my region. I'm about to order version 2.0, but am curious about the sizing. How do they size versus the original? Does the new material stretch more than the original? Thanks again!
Hi mate, thank you for the kind words! In terms of fit its very similar to the original, Scott suggest wider in the toe box and others have agreed but I am not sure on that. I wouldn't say the upper material is more flexible but certainly more durable. One thing to be wary of, while the original took no break in period, 2.0 needs 2-3 runs to break in it is a little rigid initially but gets much better with every run. In terms of sizing, order as you did the original and you'll be golden. Have fun!
Great review mate. So nice when you find a shoe that just works for you. Always been tempted by the Supertrac but price has always put me off a bit. I know it would be worth it but begrudge paying that much.
Thanks Stu, its funny how our perceptions on price vary from shoe to shoe. You can find the Supertrac RC for around £115-120 online, which is in line with the market for me...but if I were trying a new shoe I'd probably have the same perception on price as you.
@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning yeah, seen them around that price but never in my size unfortunately. The Hoka Torrent/Torrent 2 is my go to, had a number of pairs and they just work for me. Wore my current pair for two races this weekend and legs felt surprisingly OK after.
Agree its a personal thing for sure. I think the RC is a different option to the Torrent in the grip though and thats maybe why I keep going back to it. I run often on the Moors and it does so well on the varied terrain as well as mud (not deep stuff of course.)
Thanx for the awsum video as always!! Question: Im bit more interested in the Scarpa Ribelle. Would you say they would fit a wide foot? Currently run in the Hoka Speedgoat 4 (wide) but also use to run in Altra. (but the altra's have serious durability issues). Mainly looking for a very durable trail shoe.
Hey Graham. The Scarpa is a great shoe but only if it suits you on the sizing side. You'd have to order a true to size and next size up so for me I ordered 42.5 and 43 which is 8.5 and 9 UK. I found my true to size way too short in length and uncomfortable in the toe box, sizing up wa fine for width and I wear Speedgoat 4 WF too, but found it a little too loose in the upper and lockdown.

Hi Darren. Love your detailed and real world reviews. I have been eyeing this shoe for a while but hard to get in the US. They do seem to be placing some efforts into the US marketing this coming year, but living in the mountains I still do all my buying online. Therefore, how does your Scott sizing compare with your Salomon Ultra Glide and VJ Spark? Thanks for the help....
Hi Eric hope you’re well. It’s a great shoe, where it stands out for me in the support you get from the upper while still remaining flexible, that’s something I can’t find in any other shoe, they’re either too rigid or too flexible. I’d say the toe box is comparable to both the spark and glide very marginally narrower but I don’t notice it. The Scott is maybe slightly longer though. I personally take same size in all three shoes. I just found the spark a little too tight with the original insole in. I’d recommend going true to size though if both the glide and spark if you wear the same. Only thing to be aware of is the rubbery insole can rub for some people but I wear my own anyway so this isn’t an issue for me

@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning exactly. Here in the Tetons we go from hard and smooth to very steep and technical. We dont get the wet/mud that you get, but cant wait to even try them in the snow.

Ah nice, I’m based in a small town near York in North Yorkshire. Plenty of moorland here which is beautiful to run in. Where might you be visiting?

Great review there. I have just purchased a pair, size 4. I have slim feet but I feel the width where the start of lacing bit is a bit tight. Do you think this will cut blood circulation?
Hey Julia, for me I do feel the top of the laces pinch a little when I really tighten them but they don’t cause me issues. I’d say if the general fit is fine you’ll be ok. They’re also a stiff shoe out the box and have a break in period of 20-40 miles, for me at least so I think they’ll adapt to you too…also worth playing with the lacing to see how it feels also
@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning Thank you for your swift reply. I will give it a go. First time I purchased Scott. I am usually use Inov8 for Snowdonia area terrain as they are good on wet rocks. Last year I tried La Sportiva which are good but I don't trust them on wet rocks. Thank you again.
If you like good for wet rocks I'd highly recommend the VJ Xtrm 2, its been superb for me on that terrain.
What is the fitting like are they true to size
They were true to size for me and most others I know, I am now running in the VJ XTRM instead of these for the grip and comfort, cracking shoe. ruclips.net/video/uapHzYdBxx8/видео.html

You can pick up supertrac 3 for £40. Is it worth getting a pair at this price,even if you don't need new shoes?
If you can afford to I’d buy two at that it’s rare to find them under £100 let alone that but make sure it’s the supertrac RC as the normal supertrac are colletely different and I found them terrible

However, sports shoes are selling the RC for £50
I’d get the RC but usually they only do that when they have odd sizes left unless you are lucky with odd sized feet 😊
Have you reviewed the RC carbon?
Afraid not because I don’t road run often and I think they’re way overpriced
