The same thing happened to Jack Nicolson the actor, he was raised by his grandparents and his aunt was actually his mom. He was really bitter about that.
Grunge I saw Eric in 2017. His concert performance was great. Yes, he has slowly decreased his stage activity, but he gave it his all. He had passion and a real, down to earth quality that you can’t fake. Clapton may not be Gd, but he’s the king of the class act guitar players.
It’s sad that such gifted people waste the best years of their life under the control of drugs or alcohol, but it seems like the two may be connected. Fighting your demons may open the creative process. I’d like to see him in concert sometime soon.
"Tears in heaven" is probably the realest and most powerful song I've ever heard. I tear up everytime I listen to it. Could not and do not want to imagine the pain.
I read in his autobiography how he kicked his addiction to alcohol. He was desperate to kick the habit, but try as he might, he could not. So one night in his hotel room, he got down on his knees and prayed to God to help him to become free from his addiction. When he finished praying, the craving for alcohol was gone. The power of true prayer, coming from the heart is incredible! He became a teetotaler and does not drink any alcohol at any occasion. I admire him for including this story in his autobiography.
Your parents are whoever raise you. His grandparents bought him a guitar, so they must have been alright. Clapton heard Hendrix play and lost it! Unfortunately most of his problems he brought on himself. He has survived a great deal and deserves all the praise and respect he gets. I've been listening to his music for over 60 years, and I still greatly enjoy all he's done! Peace.
An intensely private man who has seen a great deal of tragedy. In concert he is refined and polite to his audience as he works his guitar magic. I see no point to dragging up his past mistakes when he does not court media attention. He lets his talent do the talking and I have great respect for that.

My grandfather was a bass player on one of his albums and he said he was a lovely, kind and a fun but broken man, they used to drink together, my grandfather still struggles with alcohol and seeing old photos of him playing bass and it still really hits me hard how addiction can ruin lives but I’m glad that Clapton has found some peace.

@laser325 ~ Exactly... People who talk about keyboardists who ARE a certain band... Well how many bands survive without a guitarist(s), only having keyboardists' as their main event? Not one!!!
My first guitar "hero" after I started playing at 17. Then it was Paige, EVH and Malmsteen, but the guy I admire most is Slow Hand. He convinced me to see B.B. King from his interviews through various guitar magazines. I got the opportunity in 96 or 97 at a small venue of 1200-1500 in France. It was life changing!
The one thing not reported was this, For many years I followed the touring group of the play Jesus Christ Superstar. At an event for the news media in Orlando Florida in 1997, I had many questions as I spoke with the man who played Judas (Mr. Carl Anderson). I had asked why Yvonne Elliman (Mary Mag) refused to tour with the group. Carl had responded kindly and said Yvonne had moved to Hawaii and was raising her son, who was fathered by non other than Eric Clapton. It was actually kept hush and Carl had said Yvonne had no desire to sue or get any money from Clapton in that way, but that they were always in contact. After the event I had pictures taken with me and Carl and the group where he had asked me what News Paper I was reporting for. I told him that I was just a fan that had tons of questions. He thanked me and said he was going to ask me not to report this if I was a reporter.
Clapton is a unique Artist lucky to be here. but had some trauma in his life, finally now with a new family he still wants to perform absolute legend, one of the greatest Guitarists ever he is Pure Cream
I've read his biography and have heard all his songs. I feel I'm the luckiest person alive that I'm going to see him live in May 2019 in Royal Albert hall.
He's a blues and rock legend and in his 70s. A lot of the people he met in his musical journey and career, sadly, never got to see or be in their 70s. It would sure a lot to take in and reflect upon. He sure lived a life.
I’m a lifelong fan but after he quit drugs and alcohol his music and his guitar playing both became so mellow and middle of the road and he started concentrating more on singing than playing guitar. I’m glad he is still here but I sure miss his wild style of playing. Same thing happened to Keith Richards when he got sober.
@Stork Legs WTF? if I was the weakest quiter, wouldn't that make me persistent, since I'm no good at quiting? You daft moron. You're about as bright as a cheap motel lamp.
Stork Legs Learn to spell and use complete sentences, dumbass must have been drunk when typing or just a dumbass making fun of someone else and trying to be tough behind your computer.
Two reasons why Eric Clapton was my guide to becoming a guitar player also were that he was always so good and that he was always so bright. Hearing the snippets from his Chronicles is outstanding in and of itself.
I've seen Clapton with the Allman brothers band way back. That show blew me away. I got to see him at his crossroads festival also he was awesome. He did have a crazy life he had is downs. But in the end a genius on the guitar. I'm glad he made it through those addiction years and still jamming.
Your title is very misleading. No tragic details have "come out" about Eric Clapton. Everyone knows all this already. It's old news and basic biographical material
@Chuck Finley Pardon me. My mistake. I live in a house with my children and their friends. I'm constantly telling them not to talk to me when I'm writing or reading. Thanks for bringing this error to my attention. I'm trained to constructive criticism.
They always said "Only the strong survive"... Eric has proven that over and over again. The man is a man among men... Love his music and always will!!!
Correction #2: Patty Boyd's 'Wonderful Today' is a book of her photography. The book where she talks about Clapton writing "Layla" for her, etc. is 'Wonderful TONIGHT.' The details aren't hard to find. Very sloppy, "Grunge."
He did write both off em for her he says so in his autobiography. He wrote wonderful tonight in a bad mood as Patti was taking ages to get ready ,saying how do I look etc and hes saying yeah sure can we go,u look wonderful ok. He wrote Layla when she was still with George, it was a song about his love for her, just listen to the lyrics, so they did get this right,I have just finished his autobiography and he clearly says he wrote Layla for Patti
Clapton is one of my guitar heroes because he’s such a great guitarist, singer and songwriter rather than just a flashy guitarist. Having said that, his autobiography was depressing to read, all that talent and yet he wasted decades of his early life lurching from one drunken binge to another and throwing his money away. When he needed money, he did a US tour then back to his drinking ways again. It is incredible that he is still alive, I’m just glad his is.
Deep Purple was asked to warm up Cream on their Farewell Tour. After five shows Cream and Eric canceled Purple because it was becoming Deep Purple's Tour in America. Eric couldn't compete with Blackmore's performing and the Crowds yelling Purple, Purple. Also Paice was showing Baker how to play drums. I love Cream but Purple Rules!
I love all different kinds of music. I was in high school band, played flute. All three of our kids were band geeks. We love the blues, some new country, not like it use to be, some new rock, old also, blue grass, mo town, and even some opry.. folk, you name it , we give a chance. We just love music, and Eric Clapton is one we love to listen to.
Oh yes, being from mississippi, we love to hear and go to the blues festibles. My favorite is in Aberdeen, ms, BUKKA WHITE fest, Bentonio, ms is good also, Aliceville, Al, right across the line of ms, oh yes, of course GROUND ZERO, in the delta, Ms, Clarksdale, ms. As I say we love all kinds of music and instruments, come visit.
My mother used to chat with him all the time many years ago. She worked for Seymour Duncan Pickups (Guitar stuff) he would call for the CEO and she always answered and he would just have casual conversations all the time. (She has no idea who he was) Guys gotta be busy but that is so cool. I bought the guitar tab book for unplugged and played every song all the f’ing time when learning guitar. Clapton is the best!
My kid & I w/ the athletes we magically cross. I named her laylah before I knew the song was saying laylah. I always thought he was saying lay low 🤷. I was like this small 👌. I obviously never gave it too much thought.
Galaxy yeah it was many years ago, but she met a ton of huge musicians. She was the exec assistant to the CEO so she answered all the calls, was in on the meetings and all that stuff. She didn’t really know most of them until someone told her who that was but some good stories. Peter Townsend gave me a joint as a tip for helping him when I was young. lol.
Ahhw E-Any love that song and the fact there’s the hard rock version and slower acoustic. I practiced so many hours to get the solos down just for the acoustic part. Signe was the hardest for me though. That’s a great girls name btw. I love it. Actually one I would seriously consider if we had another kid and was a girl.
@@ahhwe-any7434 The song lyric is Layla.....not Laylah. I wonder how many Clapton fans named their daughter ....Lay Low...I thought the same thing when I first heard it...
Not true the boy cannot be redeemed. And he was free of mistakes. Clapton thjrough negligence is reponsible in large part for the los death. He should be redeemed ? Wheres the redeemtion for the deceased son?mm He made a boat load of casj of the occurrence which I believe his highly questionable . The money shupold jot have goe to EC. ehe should have distributed it to those in need. Or least use some to get fgarts o the windows to prevent future Mischaps.
He suffered and made others suffer. He used to put people through a lot...I'm not saying I'm any better. We all make mistakes. Then we die...all of us, Tom Cruise...all of us.
I'm still in love with him, even after all these years!!!! I only saw him once, but his music has always been with me. So happy he had the family he dreamed of and a love so true.
Eric Clapton is also a racist. In a concert in Birmingham, England, in open stage he espoused his racist views. He never acknowledges that or has apologized for it either.
Even all he has been through, I love what he has accomplished. Hey, we all have things in our lives that aren't pretty. Some don't make it but through the Grace of God, we have a chance. Clapton is a success story that all can learn from. God bless you Eric Clapton.
I was lucky enough to be at the Cream Concert Saturday night at the Grand Ballroom in November 1967. Clapton says it was one of Cream's best performances.
Hitting it at the age of 21...I’m 45 and still struggling to find a way to make music my life’s work. One that can support me...not get rich or fame...a humble living doing what I love to do the most. Music! Clapton is...a guitar icon & legend while alive!
Who cares about the mistakes of his past, I and millions of other fans have nothing but unconditional love for Eric Clapton who in our eyes see him as one of the most phenomenal greatest musician singer-songwriter guitar players of all times.
I can't belive it. Claptons life was exactly like my own only i asked for a Triangle for my Birthday and nobody wanted me in their Band. Everything else was identical.
Eric Clapton has managed to look like all the beegees throughout his career. These can't all be sympathy comments people. Although my heart does go out to the people that knew Conor♥️
What about when his close friend Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed in a helicopter crash along with his manager shortly after both of them had played at the same gig in Wisconsin. It was August 27th, 1990.
@Terry Bruce - Correct, it was going to be part of the 24 Nights concerts, with two shows featuring SRV during the Blues concerts with a Hendrix 20 minute section in the middle of each set.
@Terry Bruce - Clapton intended to showcase SRV in England during the 24 Nights. Just imagine SRV at Royal Albert Hall? They had finalized that deal at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI just moments before the last show started.
Agree the music today is Muzak and static lyrics! The golden era of music for now is gone ! The new generation doesn’t know better ...... keep playing Eric ur the last of the great ones left !
His 'style" is a poor copy of the Blues masters he idolised as a teen. In one song he'll imitate Freddy King, then he'll change his guitar & try out a T Bone Walker style. Only his ignorant cloth eared audience don't know the difference.
I am legally named after eric clapton and it messes me up sometimes. What is sad is that not alot of people in my generation know about eric clapton.. Due to the nature of being named after eric clapton i tried to play guitar and it didnt go well the first time then i picked up a bass guitar and from that point on im a bass player.. luckily i like his songs so its not all bad
It's amazing how many of those British rock musicians are racist then they turn around and brag, in interviews with American journalists about being soooo heavily influenced by Black music (Folk, Blues, Jazz). It's *all* a show, *not only* the entertainment business, every cultural genre from Film and journalists to 'Professional' Sports and politicians. A performance: 24X7. I agree with my father. He called TV "The Idiot Box" when I was coming up. Now, that ignorance has infected the computer.
Yeah me too Eric im amazed..after all those body abuses, you are still here..Only God knows.. be humble, ask forgiveness that we never appreciate and loved what Gods best gift for us.. our precious body ..He will heal and Forgive us..
He might have done it just for a kick...I doubt he ever considered he would lose his wife at that point.... George's second wife was way more suited to him than she was, though....She was the one who saved his life, when he was stabbed in the chest by an intruder...by crushing him over the head with a lamp..when all the bodyguards were totally ineffectual...She's kinda quite a women, and the mother of his child.....Dhani looks just like both of them....She always blamed that incident on why he died just a few years later. She said he was never the same after that....Just a slow downfall, and demise...It's so dang sad....John and George both the same, Done in by idiots...Dang....
I have seen Clapton in Montreal Canada. I must say that I was highly impressed with his guitar playing. I honestly think that he is the best. Yes, there are many other guitar players, but in my book, Clapton is the best. Even though he had a hard life, today Eric became a spiritual person.
It’s more evidence that suggests that- we the public- don’t care how dysfunctional an artist’s life can be as long as they produce art we enjoy. How sad. If Clapton(and other celebrities)were just a regular next door neighbor of ours & had the same issues with relationships in his life, a lot of us would just stay away from ‘that guy’, but since he’s an amazing musician, we excuse bad behavior to get what we want out of him. I think our society is often more dysfunctional than any artist’s personal life. Just my opinion.
Yeah, that's idiotic. I'm taking it you are NOT a liberal and are with the church, are you? :( "Artists"! What are you? A car washing executive? Nothing artistic about that? A dentist? Not "art" to that? Oh you silly in a glass house yourself. :(
I used to have sympathy for Harrison when Clapton took his wife. But then I heard he wife swapped, during the night, with Ronnie Wood's wife. And had an affair with Ringo's wife while still with Pattie Boyd. Basically, all these rock stars are the same.
Well, Harrison was practicing celebacy at the time he was married to Boyd, because of a weird religious stint... He literally told Clapton he could have her...
@meow bastard Sorry, you're wrong, and exceedingly incorrect. He is considered one of the best, not only by me, but from the entire nation. Therefore, you are outvoted, so your opinion is moot.
@meow bastard So what? One does not need to play in all genres of music to be great. You are obviously ignorant about music, and everything about it. I do not wish to continue this conversation with you.
Clapton man, what a survivor... guys a true warrior. A funny story that a good (guitarist) friend told me recently - Turns out his wife's known EC for yrs (from university days) upon invite from EC they both went over for a visit at his house. After waiting a good while they see an old Ford in the distance rolling up the drive, Clapton jumps out the back with a cricket bat apologising that he'd driven into town and his Ferrari had broken down.. the cricket bat, he'd bought for Jeff Beck's birthday..🏏😄

I learned long ago: enjoy the art but don't inquire too closely about the artist ('cause they're usually pretty weird).
I wish I had learned that long ago. Some of my fav muaicians are not nice people
I've read his biography and have heard all his songs.
This was beautiful. To the haters shame on you. I have always loved him. Would not wish this on anyone.
I can't imagine moving on after losing a child. Strong will. It's no wonder he's among the greatest.
@Stork Legs
WTF? if I was the weakest quiter, wouldn't that make me persistent, since I'm no good at quiting? You daft moron. You're about as bright as a cheap motel lamp.
Stork Legs Learn to spell and use complete sentences, dumbass must have been drunk when typing or just a dumbass making fun of someone else and trying to be tough behind your computer.
The man's life was filled with pain. True bluesman.
Two reasons why Eric Clapton was my guide to becoming a guitar player also were that he was always so good and that he was always so bright. Hearing the snippets from his Chronicles is outstanding in and of itself.
💗💗💗you are the best,Eric! Tears in heaven is a memorable song! For ever! ❤
Clapton is god started when he was playing with Bluesbreakers.
A very heartbreaking life. I hope he has found some joy, happy memories and peace throughout the years. Much Love.
I'm in disbelief about what Eric Clapton went through. He's a strong and Noble man.
@Chuck Finley Pardon me. My mistake. I live in a house with my children and their friends. I'm constantly telling them not to talk to me when I'm writing or reading. Thanks for bringing this error to my attention. I'm trained to constructive criticism.
I couldn't imagine losing a child... so sad.
Clapton is the reason I ever picked up a guitar,I bless you my dear freind.
I'm lookin' for a bongo muse!
I'm sorry for the pain he endured, but thankful that he expressed his pain so eloquently through his music
They always said "Only the strong survive"... Eric has proven that over and over again.
The man is a man among men... Love his music and always will!!!
My favorite Eric Clapton ❤️❤️ He is a legend ❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Correction #2: Patty Boyd's 'Wonderful Today' is a book of her photography. The book where she talks about Clapton writing "Layla" for her, etc. is 'Wonderful TONIGHT.' The details aren't hard to find. Very sloppy, "Grunge."
He did write both off em for her he says so in his autobiography.
He wrote wonderful tonight in a bad mood as Patti was taking ages to get ready ,saying how do I look etc and hes saying yeah sure can we go,u look wonderful ok.
He wrote Layla when she was still with George, it was a song about his love for her, just listen to the lyrics, so they did get this right,I have just finished his autobiography and he clearly says he wrote Layla for Patti
tdrtx You're talking about someone who probably have never even heard an Eric Clapton song.
David Mellish You haven’t read the original comment correctly...
David Mellish are we talking about the same Patty Boyd who was passed around more than the gravy at Christmas dinner?
I loved listening to Layla! Even though I know what it's about. I really loved the guitar licks during the chorus!
I was also a fan until I found out he was a racist P.O.S.
Deep purple is horrible lmao
STILL LOVE ERIC 💙❤️ CLAPTON IN 2019!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵 LOVE HIS MUSIC 💙❤️!!!!!!!
Your Mom worked for SD ? Awesome !
I feel like all people make mistakes and can be redeemed. I will ALWAYS LOVE his music and talent.
Or least use some to get fgarts o the windows to prevent future Mischaps.
... damn, he's been through a lot.
You should watch his documentary "Eric Clapton :Life in 12 Bars"
@@revolver33 just saw the trailer, seems more in depth, thank you very much for the suggestion.
@@user-bn5kt3bv2b You're welcome
He suffered and made others suffer. He used to put people through a lot...I'm not saying I'm any better. We all make mistakes. Then we die...all of us, Tom Cruise...all of us.
Revolver great documentary
We love you Eric !
After everything Eric has been through he’s still here. Kiddos to you Eric. Happiness is yours and I am so happy for you. 👌💗😉
In his role as a musician or a human being, I have nothing but admiration for Clapton. He has brought great joy to the world.
Hello man how are you doing
Even all he has been through, I love what he has accomplished. Hey, we all have things in our lives that aren't pretty. Some don't make it but through the Grace of God, we have a chance. Clapton is a success story that all can learn from. God bless you Eric Clapton.
God doesn’t live where he’s going
I've always been a Eric Clapton fan.i lost my son in 2021 on his play list was tears in heaven. God bless Eric
His son's death is so god damn tragic, gives me chills
Oh man, I'm glad he's still with us but man, what a rough life.
His autobiography is excellent, very honest.
It's incredible all that he's endured. Amazing, he's still around.
Shame, it can happen to anyone
Sad, sad life
Hope he keeps happy
Brilliant musician
👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️
we ALL....
Have a Story
" Welcome to old age grandpa " . Who the F does she think she is ?!!!!
the narrator is such a basic bitch
@ 70+ this orater sounded like a guitar with broken strings. 🎸 🇨🇦 expat
So we're all in agreement ? Okay, then.
I was lucky enough to be at the Cream Concert Saturday night at the Grand Ballroom in November 1967. Clapton says it was one of Cream's best performances.
This is why I come to the comments....you are a man I'd have a drink with
From mid-October to mid-December, 1967 Cream was touring in the USA.
Flashing back in time. Greetings from Austin, TX.
Congrats, clapton, baker, bruce at their peak
Wow! All this information FINALLY came out! I’ve been sitting on these secrets for years. At least you saved me the trouble of writing a book.
Hitting it at the age of 21...I’m 45 and still struggling to find a way to make music my life’s work. One that can support me...not get rich or fame...a humble living doing what I love to do the most. Music! Clapton is...a guitar icon & legend while alive!
He's a living legend. I've nothing but love and respect to him.
Takes heroin lol
Why won't the captions say heroin, drugs or alcohol? They say "stuff" instead.. Is RUclips kidding? What are we 5 years old?
how about being racist???
And the fact that it was Clapton’s helicopter and he was supposed to be on it, but Stevie was in a hurry to get back to Chicago.
And there were floods in Texas Aug 27, 2017
@@boataxe4605 - Incorrect. Clapton was in a different helicopter because he was heading to Midway Airport, SRV was going to O'Hare.
"Clapton showed up challenged Harrison to a guitar battle' is this real lol
Agree the music today is Muzak and static lyrics! The golden era of music for now is gone ! The new generation doesn’t know better ...... keep playing Eric ur the last of the great ones left !
Plenty of other greats out there..
Lots of way better ones. This guy is mostly the go to guy for comfortable suburbanites that have not really heard of many other blues guitarists.
I have only recently discovered Eric Clapton's unique music style. He is like no other.
He's 70+ and has some neuropathy, tinnitus and some hearing loss but still plays concerts. THAT is not tragic
So what’s new.......he’s still one of the all time greats....
Yeah me too Eric im amazed..after all those body abuses, you are still here..Only God knows.. be humble, ask forgiveness that we never appreciate and loved what Gods best gift for us.. our precious body ..He will heal and Forgive us..
My first concert was Clapton back in 1973. Remains a favorite.
This was just gossip and old news.
Exactly
Eric-"Old" music ? Musice does get old, just people.
GIVE ME THE RECORDING OF CLAPTON AND HARRISON'S 2 HOUR OF GUITAR BATTLE
Fiction, that's all this.
Just glad to hear and see Clapton doing well. You have to live the blues in order to play them. He certainly did that. Guitar god he is!
He will forever remain the greatest musician to me
It’s more evidence that suggests that- we the public- don’t care how dysfunctional an artist’s life can be as long as they produce art we enjoy.
Silly me thinking there would be something the world didn't already know.
Hello
Seems like he's meant to be alone. Every band he was in never lasted. 🎸👍🏻
Let's put an ad on tragedy
How can we make a nano cent off this guy
I used to have sympathy for Harrison when Clapton took his wife. But then I heard he wife swapped, during the night, with Ronnie Wood's wife. And had an affair with Ringo's wife while still with Pattie Boyd. Basically, all these rock stars are the same.
Linda McCartney would never stoop so low. Maybe Yoko would though.
Well, Harrison was practicing celebacy at the time he was married to Boyd, because of a weird religious stint... He literally told Clapton he could have her...
And also, I think it was very much a 60's thing.
And also, I wish I was living the sort of life where I could condemn others for the choices they make in their bedrooms.
The Great Rock n Roll gang bang.
Don’t ever worry about not succeeding in attaining your goals. You lose anyway if you don’t try.
That's a good attitude. Also true.
One of the best musicians in history.
TheInvincibleViolet says you, not many others.
Yawn......😪
Clapton man, what a survivor... guys a true warrior. A funny story that a good (guitarist) friend told me recently - Turns out his wife's known EC for yrs (from university days) upon invite from EC they both went over for a visit at his house. After waiting a good while they see an old Ford in the distance rolling up the drive, Clapton jumps out the back with a cricket bat apologising that he'd driven into town and his Ferrari had broken down.. the cricket bat, he'd bought for Jeff Beck's birthday..🏏😄
