Bit like like where i come from in Todmorden you step outside there's the bus station the market all the shops a pub a club and train station we have everything in one place.
You don't need a washing machine or a kitchen, either. Just spend your entire life flitting between the laundrette and the cafe - a job is entirely optional.
As someone who hasn’t watched the show since the late80’s it’s more like you’ve found a tiny bit of abandoned London to me! Way more sets built since then.
Yeah it's a shame, I'd love to see a Polish family, it'd be far more reflective of modern East London, but I fear with the general direction of the writing it could end up just being a list of Polish stereotypes rather than a reflection of real life for recent Polish migrant families in London
Modern east end is now all gentrified and full of "yuppies" as we called them in the 90s take hackney for example, once seen as a shit hole ,now the rich people would sell a leg to live there But EastEnders has never been accurate The east end used to be full of various cultures,Jewish , Greek, Turkish, Somalian etc etc and proper cockney who are sadly dying out now and did not talk like Danny dyer with his made up Essex boy "cockney slang" I grew up with my dad talking proper cockney rhyming slang
The old set, has now been demolished, but in a belated answer to your question, yes, the new set on the opposite side of the studio grounds. Referred to as a the “front lot”. The now vacant site of the old set, was known as the “back lot”. Once the old set was demolished, the plan was to build several locations to represent wider Walford, including a High Street. However, the BBC have now decided to sell the entire complex, whilst remaining on site as tenants for the production of EastEnders. It’s not been disclosed if the BBC will be leasing the back lot in these new plans and the set expansion has been put on hold.
Albert Square itself was heavily modelled on Fassett Square in Hackney whereas the surrounding streets (laundrette, caff etc.) are fairly generic. There's some debate over where exactly Walford is and what tube line it would be on. My guess is Central Line and around the Zone 2/3 boundary.
The name is a bit of a clue, the "Wal-" part comes from Walthamstow, the "-ford" apparently is from Stratford, though obviously -- as is the case with all of London -- those areas have changed substantially since the mid-1980s. I think generally there's something of a floating location, like a floating timeline, with the show's location. When it needs to be, it's between the Olympic Park and Canary Wharf; other times it's east of Canary Wharf; other times it's north of Walthamstow bordering onto Essex.
Sorry about that. If it's any consolation, I made a video showing the interior set here: ruclips.net/video/rOnF3q7NFsY/видео.htmlsi=t_uSbBf-g668_NFX&t=95 This video also includes some photos from inside the exterior set, if that makes sense :)
Is there any chance of uploading the full video without the "fast forwards"? A few bits I was really keen to see were skipped over. But none-the-less what an enjoyable video!! I really appreciated how calm and well-done it was.

As soon as you walked onto George street I heard the tube and market noises in my head along with a few random loud classic eastenders shouting!
RICKY!!!
They don’t have George street anymore do they
Imagine actually living on Albert square for real. You’ve got everything just across the road

It’s well built quite eerie all a lot of the old characters have passed away

This is incredible.
They should’ve started doing tours of the old set so fans a view of sets etc and make money like a Rivercity in Scotland do
That’s the BBC for you.
Apparently there were pieces falling off it. But yeah, maybe a tour with hard hats 🤣
@@hardcoresetscomshould’ve taken a momento for yourself.
@@hardcoresetscomcouldn’t they repair it and host tours like Corrie does. It would be such a money maker. Epic fail BBC!!
I agree I would pay to go see this old set
It's in good condition still and they should keep it so we can visit
Too late sadly: www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12250057/Old-EastEnders-set-finally-demolished-year-new-87m-set-finished.html :(
Brings back the memories
Breaks my heart seeing this abandoned I would pay to have a mooch about I'm feeling very nostalgic 💔
Great video, loved the commentry.
Great vid! I'm amazed it was so easy to get into? And no security or alarms
My childhood memories just passing by.
It's the same set as used on auf wedersien pet . The German building site..
Yes and 'Market in Honey Lane' too which was also a soap, apparently: www.atvtoday.co.uk/192511-elstree/
Wait - they had a whole storefront for a Polish deli and never used it?

Excellent tour of the Queen vic pub, inside and out. Really enjoyed that part.
Did I miss that? Where was that?
Got a feeling it was sarcasm 🙃
No wonder Walford has so much crime, their police station has no front desk or anything for that matter. 😂
Turn into a museum
It’s crazy that TV sets in there and the old Albert Square how it’s all just been left. It’s such a shame
How did you get on the set. And its right next to the new one?
Oh I thought it was down the road from the old one seriously it's like coronation streets new set is not far from the old set
I snuck in 🙊
Not recommended.
@@hardcoresetscom not true..someone let you in from the inside

I live where its filmed
What gives with the fast forwarding thru the vic? I wanted to see the downstairs and behind the doors. Good tour though

Did you go in to the lower floor of the Wueen Vic and if you did can you time stamp it if I missed it please?
Sadly not, but this may interest you: ruclips.net/video/rOnF3q7NFsY/видео.html 👍
Always blows my mind that the buildings don't actually have anything in them.
Quite a few do but yeah, it's mainly empty shells
The old set had webcams at 4:13s it looks like it was the thing that held it!
I’m assuming you work at Elstree thanks for this video it’s fascinating!
lol no they dont

Thank you for the kind feedback! I don't think I have the original footage anymore :( But lots of photos on the website!
What is that horrible squeaking sound?
Omg how did u gain/get free accsess to the set? I wud LOVE to walk around Albert square!
Why didn’t they sell off the old items
Probably re-used most props on the new set. Reckon there's definitely a few things they could auction off though now the old one's been demolished!
I wonder what will happen to the old set
Pretty much everything other than George Street was recently demolished :(

This must be an old video as it's all gone now.
Its been knocked down now
I want the 2nd phone box
Same
So it is filmed somewhere else now ????
Nah not really - they re-built the outdoor set from scratch about 100 metres away at the same studios 👍
Why can't they just keep to one set leave it like that
It was falling apart unfortunately
And they had to build a better one for HD tv@@hardcoresetscom
You left out the best bits; the main part of the Square.
I like the nooks and crannies.

BBC Elstree Centre, Borehamwood

I'm in the upstairs part of it at 9:42 :)

@@hardcoresetscom I know but the down stairs hallway when the open the front door in episodes very creepy
They left that place a state

Probably be demolished in due course
The new set has a mosque in it
I've got one right outside my window! ... It's great, having a Mosque outside your window! ... Especially at Ramadan!
Usual waste of license fee payers money, just pull it down and build again!
