Rewatched again and love how detailed the new set is compared to the old set. New sections / sets could mean new story lines or characters. I wished the allowed the old set to be opened up to visitors. That way they could get money back as they would get lots if customers / visitors. They do set tours for other soaps. Thanks again for sharing and uploading. This was so appreciated.
I actually walked around the original set in 1985 and still have a lot of the original cast members autographs in an orange old exercise book from school!
A video popped up on my fyp on Tiktok of the cast members outside the studio. I had to do some research as I can't believe how there's normal houses right next to the set 😮. I bet they hear the night shoots 😂 must be amazing, thanks for this 😊
It looks amazing. The detail in the buildings. I worked on the original set during the 80's. Part of a small team of electrical contractors installing the power supplies for camera's and sound recording.
@@optimallyaceyt Martin Kemp did an item for The One Show showing the new set, and yes the new buildings are heated and partially furnished so they can use them for filming
Really interesting, please do another update soon to see what happens to the old set as its slowly removed. Lots of items you can see have been transfered over, the Albert Square Street signs, the Queen Vic hanging sign, the market stalls, the burglar alarm on Number 3, some of the curtains from the houses / above the Vic, Kathy's neon light, the signs that stuck out outside the shop & launderette, etc. They've not yet moved or replicated the signal light above the railway bridge which has been there since the start, and note number 43 now has a loft conversion! Pity they didn't make a behind the scenes programme from start to finish of the new build / completion / decommissioning of the old site etc!
I remember "coronation street a moving story" came out about a week before the new set for Corrie was seen on screen, so perhaps they could have made a documentary and will bring it out in February. If not there will at the very least be some kind of set tour, or a short 10 minute documentary about the new/old set.
Spent many years from early 86 onwards going Elstee each weekend and school holidays with my mates getting signed photos, jumping over on to the Lott, getting caught lol. In fact the security office by the front gate is where the pilar box on the new Lott is. June brown used to give me a lift to the station many times, nearly got a lift off Leslie Grantham as he was going to see West Ham play , but wasn’t enough room for me and my mate so we both didn’t go , but there was a Debbie and a Matthew from Hastings that used to go up there each week too and I think it was Debbie that went and they picked up Nick berry on the way. In fact that Matthew I just mentioned June brown would keep in touch with me off and on and she said she starred in a play Matthew had written for the Edinburgh fringe and he then went on to write for emmerdale thanks to June. I got so many good memories from going up elstree, lots of photos , autographs, funny stories. It was eastenders that inspired me to become an actor.
Why cant they have fans visit the old set ?? pay a small fee for to visit for half a day to walk around and have your photo taken with the Vic in the background maybe one or two of the stars of the show to do a meet and greet. This would be nice ??
Great footage UK Drone Flyer, I haven't seen Eastenders in years but this makes me want to watch it again. I personally think British set makers are the best in the world. Elstree Studios has produced many amazing shows and movies over the years. Could not believe how close the set was to residential areas. Keep up the good work.
There’s a major difference between the two sets: at the end of Bridge Street, next to the gay bar, the road used to continue under a bridge and there was a bus stop and at least one shop on the other side. Now it’s a pedestrianised dead end, this can be seen at 5:31 .
So strange seeing the two sets, will miss the old one. Wish they could of let us tour it... I suppose for health and safety reasons this was never a possibility.
The original set was only suppose to be temporary and was built when there was no such thing as HD or 4K so it was a bit grubby. All these years later and they’ve still been using it. They needed new sets with much more detail to enable them to continue to film in HD and maybe 4K.
the 'grubbiness' was intentional on the part of Tony Holland and Julia Smith (I believe). By principle its WAY too easy for new buildings to LOOK new, but they wanted the set to look aged and lived in so they devised to slightly damage the set. Like for instance breaking fence posts or breaking pavement or curb slabs and drilling pot holes into the roads. It was meant to emulate that part of East London, it was grubby and full of gangs. There were points during the sets construction that it was mentioned that Julia Smith notably asked that an already finished brick wall (for one of the house gardens) be dismantled and rebuilt to look crooked. Today, EastEnders has a different goal, London is a much more posh place to live in, with the gentrification and all. So the new set is meant to look a little cleaned up and show off this changing world from IRL. The limitations of the old set is that it was mostly built with plywood and it doesnt show well in HD, while the new set is build fully of brick, like the proper buildings it's meant to take on.
It will be interesting to see how they explain what happened to the bit by the Albert considering it used to be a road and on the new set there’s a shop

Well the video from November shows that there are boards up around that are, you can actually see those boards on the old set in this video, they have just been partially taken down. It looks like it will be mentioned on screen as some kind of "regeneration project" by the council or something I reckon. Or there could still be some kind of fire storyline of some kind in the next couple of months.

The Tube has now moved. The new set is smaller and the bridge they used to go under down from the Fish and Chip shop on Turpin Road down to George street is now closed off again (as it used to be in the 90’s) and will become the new tube entrance, right next door to the Dagmar/Prince Albert. The original tube on the old set used to be accessed through under that Bridge next to the Dagmar/Prince Albert into George street where the Arghee Barji used to be and beyond the houses where Billy used to live.

Good idea, they should do that. I think they would get a good response.
I dont think that would be practical as the whole studio complex is working more or less 7 days a week.
They should definitely do a set tour for the public but I guess that's difficult with filming happening on site everyday.
