I use to fly high performance tailwheels and taught tail wheel flying. Great job Robert, don't usually find comprehensive instruction of the DCS birds. God bless
😃 Thank you for letting me take off and fly! - before that I always landed with a left roll into a ground disaster with more or less impressive explosions - with nice things like oxygen and full fuel tanks on board - (as befits a beginner, I suppose ?) - and after following the official tutorial step by step 😅
Great tutorial! I couldn't figure out how to taxi without going off the runway or how to takeoff using the built-in tutorials, but watching your video and using your tips I was able to!
Thanks! Working on the landing tutorial now, it's a bit of a tricky one. Lots to try and distill into an easy to understand lesson. Might end up being a few related tutorials. We'll see!
Nice video .. I don't usually like long tutorials (say, over 20 min), but on this case all your explanations are clear and helpful, and so time flies and I found myself never drifting away or getting bored. I understand that these tailwheel aircrafts are kind of hard to master and you do succeed on giving enough information and tips, so that the viewer feels compeled to try it out on its own :) ... don't forget to add the video to its playlist, as it isn't there yet :) Best regards and looking forward to the next chapter on this series.
Pro tip: dont worry about the slip indicator when youre landing. Just keep the nose of the plane on centerline. The only instrument you should be worried about when landing is your airspeed.
@@jh-lp7cg or you can cross control. Bank into the wind and apply opposite rudder to keep your nose pointed down the runway. It's okay to touch one main prior to the other.
You make the best DCS tutorials! Hope you make one for F-14. Like how you actually explain why and don't just say do this do that like all other dcs tutorials.
I would love to make a tutorial series for the F-14! If only I could figure it out myself... ;) Thank you for your kind words, there are lots of things planned in the pipeline. Now if I could only have 48 hours in a day... :D
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO. I'm using a Saitek X45 without the Rudder Pedals - I may buy them this week. Just started in DCS world and your video was the first I've seen to fully explain everything - even tho I did read the PDF. I've flown Cessna 172 in real life. This is more economical.
In the sim there are visual cues allowing you to land without looking at a single gauge and this I would recommend over looking at the instruments, this is a very common error that is instilled in sim pilots right from the start and it is a big cause of accidents because people aren't looking outside at how the plane is behaving, so in future I would try to emphasise how you don't need to look at them very much if at all.
Absolutely correct! You certainly can and in VR or in real life I completely agree with you that visual cues should be used over the instruments (except perhaps for cross-checking) but in a simulator on a single screen without depth of field or a lot of experience I personally find the instruments to be more informative and helpful to those new to aviation - and I completely agree, as a certificated pilot I had to unlearn my reliance on the instruments from my 19 years of flying simulators before starting my real world flight training. This video isn't meant to be a full landing tutorial, that will be coming in a future lesson, but I will keep this in mind when filming that lesson and be sure to mention and perhaps pause to highlight some of the visual cues used on landing instead of relying on the instruments!
I understand that point, although it is quite possible to fly in DCS on a flat screen with no instruments at all. I think the instruments can certainly help new players however I think it needs to be emphasised that it should only be a glance or two and most of their time is spent outside the window. I see all too often players focusing in on the cockpit when the best visual clues are outside the aircraft. Sorry I may seem a bit passionate about this, but the P-51 is my baby in DCS I've been flying it for nearly 5 years now and have a accumulated lots of time in it doing combat and display flying. I don't mean to be harsh overall the video is very good and informative so sorry if I come off in that way, I just want people to get the right message. I made a tutorial on my other channel a while back feel free to check it out and take any ideas that make sense to you for your video ruclips.net/video/vT--KPtD_vM/видео.htmlm1s
Joshua Nelson Not at all dude! Pilot certificate is a license to learn. I love it when people are constructive with their criticism because it just makes everyone better at what they do. I look forward to your future criticisms of my tutorials and will check out your video when I get home!
Joshua Nelson I'm definitely not a subject matter expert on the P-51 but I do enjoy flying it and have been meaning to make general tutorials for all of the DCS aircraft since I put together my series for the Su25T. I'm going for general knowledge but always appreciate when people make corrections or provide better tips through the discussion. I can only know so much flying so many different modules! 😁
Another note, the tailwheel only unlocks when the stick is forward of neutral and is locked in the neutral position and aft of the neutral position, you do not have to pull the stick back to lock it. Although it is good practice to keep the stick full aft when the engine power is above idle in a tail dragger.
Lol yeah just tried to fly this thing not long ago, I knew about having rudder trim, but my plane went so far left and towards the ground, I'm surprised I got into the air... landing though is a different story.
Hell Rob: Always nice to have more info. I'm new to DCS and struggling with the P51. What is that grid u have in lower left corner that shows ur inputs to rudder/brakes/trims/stick? U mentioned not having pedals. I am awaiting delivery of the Tracker IR, I have a Thrustmaster Joystick (not set up just yet),so it is difficult using keyboard/mouse inputs. Those will help, correct? Problem area right now is takeoff. I keep putting the props into the ground and/or flipping the plane left/right. It's my stick and rudder inputs, correct? Any tips much appreciated. Thank you.
Very interesting video. To shoot a rocket is the space bar on keyboard like for guns? I haven't seen anything in ADJUST CONTROLS a shortcut for bombs or rockets. Thanks in advance for your help.
Depends on the airplane. If you have the TF-51 that comes free with the game, there are no weapons-it’s just a trainer. In the P-51 there are controls for the trigger and weapon release.
Question for you. When you enter a severe and select a aircraft then press fly should you end up in the cockpit on the airfield.Because I end up spectating other people?
Ballinger French haha you either have a very low iq if you think that he was serious about the magnet or that was a very bad attempt at a joke. I never said Shirley either!
Actually you would see this link : www.flightsimbooks.com/flightsimhandbook/CHAPTER_02_18_Left_Turning_Tendencies.php These are the reasons for "left tendency" of many propeller's jets like TF-51.
very interesting. ive seen this a few times to now and still dont understand what im doing wrong. i cant get more than 150 in level flight and trim functions but doesnt seem to do anything.really frustrating
The TF-51 and P-51 has what is known as a constant-speed prop. Make sure you have a control mapped to engine RPM. Otherwise your throttle is at full power but the prop won’t be developing the full thrust the engine is capable of. This is an easy one to miss if you’ve only flown the jets in DCS or if you are used to fixed-pitch props.
I watche dc a video. But everytime i go to download dcs, it takes so long to download that my download speeds are at a rate of 1.6 mb per second. I spent 11 hours trying to download dcs on pc and it wasn't even halfway. If you vould make a tutorial that would be nice.
Hi Robert, I apologize in advance .... my question is not related to this particular tutorial of yours, but have you ever done a tutorial on how to implement TARGET from Thrustmaster? Thanks in advance for all your tutorials!
Jose Carlos Suero I have not done a TARGET tutorial because I don't use TARGET. Never have! I just bind the controls in-game, though that isn't super straightforward either. Might put together a tutorial on the in-game control configuration utility though!
I'm assuming your referring to take off? When you are taking off you need to push the stick forward first to get the tail off the ground, then pull the stick back to lift the bird off the ground. Since this answer is 2 months late I'm sure you've already figured this out by now...hopefully. Safe landings.
Just explaining that the trim changes when you change power -- the changes go out the window and you'd conceivably need to retrim the airplane as you go. The smoother and more gradual the power changes, the easier it is to adjust trim as you go. :)
