With the help of Jellyfin, storing, organizing, and streaming your favorite holiday, wedding, or GoPro videos is super easy. A self-hosting a media server might sound like a daunting task, but you will be surprised how easy it really is.
How to install Jellyfin on Windows
1. Grab the installer from the download section of the Jellyfin website. Make sure to get the latest stable 64-bit version.
2. Run the installer, select the installation directory, and wait for the installation to finish.
3. Once installed, make sure to accept the firewall prompt. You can access Jellyfin at localhost:8096.
4. Set up a video library. Create a Windows folder and call it however you like.
5. Set up a user in Jellyfin.
6. Add a media library, choose the content type, and point it to the right folder.
How to install Jellyfin on a Linux machine
1. In your terminal of choice grab this command and run it:
“wget O repo.jellyfin.org/install-deb... | sudo bash”
2. Grant correct permissions to your media folder by entering this combination:
“chgrp jellyfin ./JellyfinLibraryFolder"
3. Enter this combination as well: “chmod g+rwx ./JellyfinLibraryFolder”
Installing NordVPN and setting up Meshnet on Linux
1. Install the NordVPN for Linux app from here: nordvpn.com/download/linux/
2. Open up the Nord account page in your web browser and at the bottom of the welcome page, you will find the “View details” button in the NordVPN Meshnet Free section.
3. Create a token which you’ll use to log into your NordVPN account through the terminal. Make sure to store the token. Once you close the window it won’t be displayed again.
4. Once you generated a token, head over to your terminal and input the following:
“nordvpn login --token (your token)”
5. Make sure that Meshnet is enabled: “nordvpn set meshnet on”.
6. And check the address of your device within Meshnet: “nordvpn meshnet peer list”
Setting up custom DNS name for Jellyfin
1. If you are using a virtual machine, install Nginx directly on your VM with: “sudo apt install nginx”
2. Once the package is installed, configure the default website:
“sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/default”
3. Remember to reload ENGINEX once you’re done with the configuration file:
“sudo systemctl reload nginx”
Adding client devices on MacOS
1. install the NordVPN app.
2. Log in, and make sure that your Meshnet is on.
3. Grab the IP or the hostname of either of the servers running the Jellyfin media server and paste it into your browser.
Adding client devices on Android phone
1. Download the Jellyfin app.
2. Add one of the servers you’re running on the laptops.
3. Log in.
Jellyfin and NordVPN can also be installed on an AndroidTV device.

I have been using meshnet with windows smb for more than a year now. What are the advantages of using Jellyfin over just a classical SMB?
The main two advantages of Jellyfin instead of mapping a network drive via SMB are the ability to organize your library and the transcoding ability. While the first is pretty self-explanatory the transcoding is not so much.
Imagine you have a video that uses an exotic codec - you won't be able to just play it on all machines right out-of-the-box. Jellyfin in such cases will transcode the video and/or audio stream(s) to a format that's understood by other devices, without the need for additional software. On top of that, it comes with a robust web UI, which comes in handy for things like user access control or personalization.

can you please explain the final custom DNS step to me please? i am on windows but am not sure what to do there?
The reverse proxy setup isn't required to access your Jellyfin Media server. If you don't set up your reverse proxy, you can just add :8096 at the end of your server's Nord name. Let me know if you have more questions! :)
Thanks for this. I hated JellyFin. It ran rampant creating loads of jpg files on my NAS box which already had the jpgs for my videos. I already have a QNAP media server running and use VLC as my client. Any chance of a video setting up Meshnet with these?

Hello! Currently there is no out-of-the-box support for QNAP for Meshnet, however, there are some community-based solutions based around Docker containers. As for accessing anything with VLC via Meshnet, you can check out the security camera article/video, as we cover accessing VLC streams through Meshnet in them. This video is terrible. You should have made two video, one for Linux and one for Windows…. I did the meshnet on windows and it doesn’t pick up on external devices.
