    Hey guys! This video is all about the STRANGE reaction I had to getting a SEGA CD on Christmas Morning 1992. To this day I cannot understand why I reacted the way I did, but I hope it gives you a chuckle. Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. GAME ON!

    The fact you’re wearing a JVC shirt and one of the Sega CD models in Japan was the “X-eye” by JVC makes this video that much better lol

      @MyRetroLife  3 года назад +13

      Haha so true! Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn’t thought about that but remember the X’Eye, specifically how much Dad wanted it and regretted never buying it at our local EB Games when it was discounted

      @@MyRetroLife I had an X-eye, it was awesome. I also got it heavily discounted for like $50.

      @Watcher3223 Год назад +2

      JVC never released the X'Eye in Japan, though.
      They did release the Wondermega and Wondermega 2, but under their Victor brand since that is the company's name (Japan Victor Company) and they were able to legally use it for branding in their own home market.
      The X'Eye is basically the Wondermega 2, though without the provision for wireless controllers (thank goodness for that, actually).

    I never did get the Sega CD but you know what I did have? The Sega Channel. I have to say convincing my mom to get me that for me for… a little over a year was one of the coolest childhood memories I have. And at the end of every month, I remember staying up until midnight to see what the next haul of games would be. I’d keep resetting the system waiting for them to push the update. Love the channel. Wish I had these kind of videos… but happy you are willing to share it with me.

    I had the opposite reaction that Christmas. I had only asked for two things Christmas of 92: A stereo with a CD player OR, a Sega CD. I got both. Needless to say i was near tears when i discovered the Sega CD hidden behind the tree. it was only years later, I was told Dad detoured on his way home from Toronto to Bangor Maine to pick it up. We lived in Halifax. He was days late getting home, and I remember giving him hell for it. He just really wanted to get that console for us.

    LOL this is awesome. I had a similar Sega CD "surprise." My parents had my model 1 wrapped under our tree for a few weeks before Christmas so I had the bright idea to sneak it to a friends house one night for a sleepover. We opened it, played it, and re-wrapped it and stuck it back under the tree the next morning. So Christmas morning was lackluster to say the least. I had to "fake" being excited.

      I think it was Christmas 1991 where I had asked for a Genesis all year. I eventually found it in my parent's closet at some point before Christmas.
      So I had to act disappointed and sad when they let us open all the gifts and there was no Genesis. I knew they were about to reveal, "oh there's one last present!" and I had to do my best fake wet eyes look. Pretend to be disappointed knowing full well what was coming.
      Then of course I had to act surprised as well.

    • @anonamatron
      @anonamatron 2 года назад +3

      I did the same with my Super Game Boy. I had to re shrinkwrap it too though, which involved stretching some plastic (saran wrap, maybe...) tightly over the front with a bunch of scotch tape on the back. On Christmas I acted soooo excited and ripped that shrinkwrap off soooooo fast...
      I really regret doing that though. Felt so empty.

    • @IoNs.Stonio
      @IoNs.Stonio 2 года назад +3

      Omg me and my brother did this too! We basically beat Sewer Shark before before Christmas day, however unbeknownst to us, my parents knew we had been doing this because the following year we asked and got the Panasonic 3DO. This time, upon carefully unwrapping the 3DO box, eager to play our new system, our excitement immediately crashes when we find a phone book in place of the console. My parents had hidden the console and fooled us good! And since we were not supposed to open gifts till xmas, we couldn't question it, because it would mean we opened our gift early.
      Parents...always a step ahead of us! Lol

    I had Epilepsy till I was 3 so I wasn't allowed to play video games, but a year without seizures they let me finally have a system at 4. I was a SEGA fanboy for life from then on. I don't think I was really aware of CD till later.

      That is what let the Sega CD down for me to be honest... rather than utilizing the extra hardware to make better games, like Final Fight CD, The Terminator, better arcade conversions etc... it was just a lot of FMV stuff, which I am not fond of. A wasted opportunity in my opinion.

    Just seeing this for the first time exactly 1 year later. I got a Model 2 Sega CD Christmas of '93 and It was truly one of the best Christmas gifts I ever got. I got After Burner 3 with it, and a few days later picked up the Model 1 pack-ins Sol Feace and Sega Classics Arcade Collection used. The day that it came in, I waited around in the mall the whole day until it arrived. I blew my $500 on the SEGA CD Unit and two games. Sherlock Holmes and Time Gal. It was the coolest day ever. The Sega CD version of Final Fight is still the best version of that game till this day. Fun times with the Sega CD.

    In trying to remember what I got 92 Christmas I keep drawing a blank gaming wise. I was still on Genesis and NES with crazy amounts of awesome titles. I had a friend a street over who was similar to you. His dad though, was a huge PC gamer and he got things like the sega cd, snes, 32x etc. so I got to play them over there. Then I looked up gaming 1992, and remembered. For me it was all about the ARCADE! Games like street fighter and mortal kombat were huge in the social scene I was a preteen at the time outside boston hanging out at arcades and such constantly.
    Funny episode, especially because the sega cd was such a sought after item nobody I knew had that at christmas that year. Honestly if you told me, I probably wouldn't have known it existed at the time.

    I'm from latin america so I didn't quite understand what Tyler said when he saw the Sega CD. A CD for what? Just before the markers part.
    I'm a big fan of these series. When the iretrogamer channel disappeared, the episodes that I wanted to see again were the Batman, Contra 3 and, especially, the Sega Saturn episode. I really like that message at the end "If you can't be yourself, then who are you?". That was awesome.
    Another episodes that I hope we'll get to see again is the one where your aunt Michelle gave you a copy of SMB3, and there was another one in which you talked about the Game Gear, I think.
    Thanks Tyler for all the great episodes. They're are very relatable and they bring back a lot of memories. Have a great December, guys! Can't wait for the next episode.

      That was my reaction to it as well. I got my Sega CD the Christmas it released (92') and while I was excited to get one...I almost didn't understand what I was getting. The Sega Genesis as an example had a picture of the Genesis, the console, a TV, 3-button controller, and Altered Beast emblazoned on the screen. The Snes had a picture of the console, Super Mario World, and two controllers. Both machines packaging had pictures of games on the back. The Sega CD's packaging was...maybe not abstract but far more subdued than any other machine or add-on during that time. If I remember right the Sega CD box had a few games on the back...I have to go back home and look.

    Strangely enough, this video encapsulates why the SEGA CD didn't get the sales Sega was looking for. It's not a stand alone console and the only people in the market for it have to own a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in order to use it. Sega accidentally competed against themselves. The Sega CD games were awesome to. It's a shame Sega didn't just go all in on the Sega Saturn port the SEGA CD games to Saturn, instead experimenting with the CD add-on and stop at the 32X, but that's all hindsight. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing!

    Christmas of 92 I was 13 and finally got a Sega Genesis. I was through the roof with excitement. Then I looked at the one game my Dad had gotten for me.....Tommy Lasorda Baseball. I am not a sports guy and my Dad was still trying his best to turn me into one. I didn't let him see my disappointment, but I can remember sitting on the floor staring at the back of the Genesis box and wishing I had gotten an action game to go with it. I remember getting the Sega CD the Christmas that it came out. I was so excited about it. Then the next I was disappointed because it had already stopped working. But then the day after that my parents had returned it and brought home a brand new one.

    I still remember when my dad got me pokemon platinum on my birthday. I was jumping up and down like I have just been given the greatest piece of knowledge of the world.
    Way better reaction than when I got my da lite in the first place, might have something to do with giving me the console at 6 am, where I am still groggy and I dont even know what life is!

    Brother, your life mirrors mine so much it's scary. While we were smack in the middle of the 16-bit wars...in my home we loved them both. We had a Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes the year they dropped (Gen-1989, Snes-1991, Sega CD-1992). Even though we played many Snes games our preference was always with Sega. Christmas for me was always a smorgasbord of gaming goodness that at times bordered on the ridiculous. What made it even more nuts was my parents were divorced but they always set aside their differences for me. For example, my mom got me the Sega CD Christmas of '92 and my dad took care of the games that year. What really sucked was my Sega CD was faulty and we had to ship it back to Sega for repairs. I didn't get my Sega CD back for almost 5 and a half weeks.

      Yes it was! I remember when I finally got to play it...the feeling that I really had something special. Given how positively rare it was to see one out in someone's home it felt like I was part of an exclusive club for diehard Sega fans. Yes, a lot of the games didn't always take advantage of the hardware but when they did...oh my God.

I absolutely lost my mind. I was five years old in 1987. Then I remember Christmas of 1992 getting my first Sega along with the first Mortal Kombat and sonic the hedgehog game. I could be off by a year or two with my years but, I remember losing my mind over the Sega as well.

    Christmas of 1992 I was 16 and I got Ys Book 1+2 and Ys 3 for the TG-16 CD. I was so psyched because they were hard to find but my mom was like your dad, she always came through. I got to the end of Ys1 but rushed and was too under-leveled to beat Dark Fact, so I skipped to Ys 3 and about the time I beat Ys 3, I finally finished Ys1....and went on to 2. So I essentially beat them out of order. Still, my god....it was so memorable. I became a huge Ys fan that day. Of action RPGs in general, really.

    This really makes me wonder who else was so ahead of the Retro curve who was, like, an adult. Like we kid loved video games, would beg our parents to get us games (with varying levels of success). But I have a really specific memory of BEGGING my mom for the Sega CD when I saw it at the Software Etc. I worked on her in that food court for, like, 2 hours. In the end, we walked out without the system. In truth, I’m glad I didn’t get my way because, while there were some solid games for the system, there is NO way I would have known what games to get. I would have likely been stuck with Sonic CD and a bunch of bs full motion video games.

    Well......your reaction kinda sums up the existence of the Sega CD🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Ok to be fair, my expectations were through the roof for the Sega CD......for months I had caught these glimpses of the Sega CD and some of the games like Sewer Shark, Night Trap, etc. so I saw all these cool looking screen shots of these digitized images, which at the time they was mind blowing, I was thinking "damn this looks like actual TV" and little did I know but these games would be more akin to watching a show on TV than playing an actual game😆.
    I'm like you, over the next several years I did come to love the Sega CD, and it did have a handful of truly memorable games. This console is where I played the game that, to this day, is my favorite game of all time......The Secret of Monkey Island. That game literally changed my life and turned me forever on to point and click/adventure games. The one huge downside to the Sega CD is that hardly anybody else owned one so there was nobody I could trade games with for a few weeks. Blockbuster did have a small selection of Sega CD games, but since it was such a niche product, they only had 1 or 2 copies of the few games they had for the console so it was extremely hard to rent the more popular titles like Sonic CD.
    To the day I still have my Sega CD hooked up in my gameroom/mancave and yes the Sega CD still works. I haven't played it in a while but after watching this video I feel the urge to fire it up and play some Eternal Champions Challenge From the Darkside.
