- The SEGA CD Model 2 is an attachment I have wanted to get for a while now for my collection and today we're going to attempt to fix one from Ebay. The listing claims it's broken and does not power on, so lets see if we can fix it.

did you try super glue?
Just unplug the battery and wait 30 seconds
did you try soldering their necks
CTRL ALT DEL
You need to complete the setup once it's all fixed. SEGA Genesis II, SEGA CD, SEGA 32X, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic Carts.
You forgot the Game Genie to complete the tower of power.
The issue with the 32X is people lose the unique AV cable. Luckily, there are remanufactured ones.
@Michael Skinner I don't have it anymore, but I had the JVC X'Eye and the 32X, I did have Game Genie, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 1-3 as well as Spinball.
And a game genie
THE SEGA TOWER OF POWER
I got a Sega CD Model 2 two years ago and I absolutely LOVE the thing. I had always wanted one also and it's so much fun. The Lunar Games, Shining Force CD, Dune, Terminator, Final Fight CD and so on. When you look at everything that wasn't FMV crap the rest of the library is REALLY good.
"We got some cobwebs in there" Oh good, the spiders ate the cockroaches, we're fine
A short but lovely techwave. Watching this every Sunday makes my weekend.
The wood table is too dark of a background for the overhead.
his nose was switched with another baby at birth
Ah I remember the Sega CD days when playing Sewer Shark, Sonic CD, Dracula, and Lunar.
Cat fish to Hole Hog, the dang thang bit me.
Silpheed was one of my favorites on the system. There were a few other great surprises too. Terminator was cool
Night trap a very controversial game
@@timelymirror7826 I bought that thing on PS4. I couldn't figure out the mechanics to save my ass.
I'm still waiting for a new Sewer Shark release. I got all the others already. Whenever they are on sale they only cost two to three dollars, it's great.
A lot of people blow that fuse with a NES AC power supply.
My mom used to blow a fuse when I played Sega all night.
Didn't know that and I had to check psu information out.
Those NES power supplies have ruined quite a few devices in their day.
"how to make $100" in less than 5min and a few dollars"
his nose was adopted and didn't know.
And a soldering iron
Fun fact: Sega CD systems are also Karaoke CDG disc players. Can't remember how to access that but it's in the system menu. Saw it on a friend of mines a few years back.
Brings back so many memories. Some friends got this model for Christmas. I was excited for them, but I was also jealous. About a year later I landed an under the table job at 13 years old. My first major purchase was a used Sega CD Model 1. The first game I purchased was Sonic CD. It blew my mind with the opening sequence, and the futuristic dystopian feeling the levels gave. How they implemented the time travel was cool too. While many of the games were blatant full motion video trash there were many hidden gems to discover. Super Nintendo was the king of that era, but Sega earned their place in the history of gaming.
Sega shat on the Super Nintendo
Man I don't care what anyone says, the Sega CD kicked ass for the time. Yeah it was overly expensive but other than that it had a lot of interesting games on it.
bought an "broken" one for 80 bucks "good deal"... well... i see functional ones for 80€ as well^^
If he bought a working one he couldn’t have made any money off of a killer video
80 euros is 94 usd, so yeah, he saved a couple bucks and got a video out of it.
Just curious, have you ever fixed a Sega CDX? It was a genesis and Sega CD in one system. I heard that those things are a pain in the ass to fix.
I remember toys r us selling those and the nomad on clearance and still couldn't sell them for months. Kinda wish I picked one up
@@N7uy66u
I had a nomad for a few years it was really cool but boy did it burn through batteries if you didn't have the special battery packs.
Of course I needed money and ended up selling it, that was definitely a mistake. Of course in my defense it was years if not decades before they came back into style and became highly sought after.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu I think they had a power brick or power cord u could get for it but I guess that would make it not a portable system. I sold panzer dragoon saga thinking no one would ever pay over $60 for a used game and I was never going to go through it twice. Now I heard it goes for $900
@@N7uy66u oof size: large
How about the virtual boy. I hear the eye piece can disconnect leaving a cycloptic mess.
I beleve there's a ribbon cable inside that becomes disconnected from a board (some type of adhesive that breaks down). I bought two broken VBs years ago. Each had one bad cable. Now I have one working and one with two bad cables. 😁
Mine have that problem. I have to find the courage to attempt a repair.
@@marie-franceFortin Years ago, I found someone that would do the repairs for $30 or so, but I just never got around to sending mine off. Look on Reddit and other similar places.
Ugh I bought 2 just to find out that the link cable to play two players would never release. Luckily I heard u can get the link cable now for Mario tennis. I think u have to do something though to get the game to activate it
I've heard that the gameplay can cause real life health side effects and so I never even wanted to emulate the games. Obviously playing Mario Tennis on a TV is different than playing it on Virtual Boy, but I didn't want to give the console the time of day.
With the “strength” of th Sega CD library, unlikely to have burned out the laser!
I truly enjoy watching these type of videos! Such a great tutorial video. Makes me want to try to fix things
The lasers always work in the model 2 consoles. The issue is the spindle slides down on the shaft and causes the laser to go out of focus or the disc will actually hit the housing and make horrible noises. The model 1 it's usually just the belt that causes the laser to not read a disc because the draw mechanism can't bring the laser head up to the disc to read it properly. Also the capacitors in the model 1 systems and a huge issue. But thankfully they're easy to replace.
Aww i wanted to see your reaction when you found out you just had disk 2 lol
You should get the game “Adventures of Willy Beamish” definitely worth it on the Sega CD
@Lou Sainis if only people knew... they would then understand my name
Sometimes a blown fuse can be a blessing. The fuse blows in 1994 and someone puts its in storage for 26yrs waiting for us to come by
Finally your doing Sega refurb! SEGA!!!
I took a gamble with a Sega CD model 1 on Ebay earlier this year. And it worked right off the bat. The auction said untested, so it was a crap shoot. And a while back I got a Sega CDX for less than $200 that the seller said wouldn't play a Genesis cartridge or read discs. Well after cleaning with a q-tip and alcohol. It worked just fine and they go for pretty good money. lol
But yeah, if you find a no-power SegaCD, easiest fix on the planet. Slap a new fuse in and enjoy that puppy.
Just looking at that Sega CD gave me chills. The release of that system was a formative time in my life, and I loved it even though I had to rent it because my family couldn't actually afford one
6:39 just for future videos, change your ISO on your camera so we can actually see in black on black/dark areas like underneath the CD lid. There wasnt enough contrast of colors/better lighting to see comfortably.
Yeah at first I thought I just had my settings too low, turned up my brightness to maximum still awful.
I would love to have on of these too. It sucks how expensive the great games are. I guess that’s true of most older systems now
Love that Turtles arcade t-shirt!
so, i had TWO sega CD's ; I got one new on clearance for $100, my buddy gave me his old broken one for spare parts after his brother spilled something on his. Played great, played it for about 7 or 8 years, sold it on Ebay WITH the broken one for parts for about $70- in the original box, manuals, purchase reciept...my how things have gone up in value
Hey Spawnwave, the new Splinter Cell is going to be a Stadia Exclusive! Guess that automatically makes you a huge Stadia fanboy 😂
I remember when I bought an "untested" Sega CD on eBay expecting it to be busted.
I was shocked when it worked.
I actually got lucky at a pawn shop years ago, they had multiple non-working systems they let me have for ten bucks total. I walked out with an NES, a Gamecube, a PlayStation, and two XBOXes. Only one of the XBOX systems was dodgy, and the GC just needed a fix on the lid sensor.
I also bought one on eBay not working but I hooked it up and it worked just fine. Turns out the seller didn’t know it had a separate power supply to the main system 😂
I really love tech waves. Im not technologically versed but these videos are informative and entertaining
Also with the save battery you can leave the system on for a few hours and it'll recharge it after a while. But you can also buy a new rechargeable battery for it.
He should have just called the SEGA hotline.
Nice fix. It takes an expert to know it is the fuse. Thanks for showing us. I would love to see a soldering tutorial someday
On the sega CD (model 1 and 2) blown fuses are quite common failures
Great video! What are you using to capture the Sega CD signal to OBS.
I love the model 2 Sega CD. I have the extended that attaches to it so you can hook up the Model 1 Genesis to it, which is my preferred setup for this combo. Gen 2 isnt the premiere system in terms of visuals and sound.
it's specifically the early Model 2s and even late Model 1s that have the bad sound.
Your videos are awesome man! Thank you for the content really helps with getting through the pandemic. I want to get my game gear screen converted where can I send it?
I bought a clean N64 from Ebay and it would give me a black screen about half the time I would turn it on. Turns out the jumper pack was going bad I got a replacement and it now works great.
Nice that it was such a simple fix! The metal plate that attaches to the bottom of the genesis when it's attached to a sega cd is a useful thing to have though, without it the Genesis will be a little unstable...
glad I watched this. I didnt know people were buying these yet. I actually have two genesis 1's and CD 2's and tried to sell them like 10 years ago with a starting bid of $50. didnt even sell. One broke one working too
Nice score! My NES needed a bodgewire as someone had cut IRQ and rejoined it with a bodgewire but didn’t realise they cut the next track over. Clean the 72 pin and all good. And all for $AUD8 from a local thrift store 😄
Shoulda sent you mine but I gutted it and left my mega SG attached to it with the everdrive pro because it still looks badass. Not using the exact power adapter causes so many issues. CD Skipping, games not loading, desync, battery issues and blown fuse. Can’t use any genesis or 32X adapter, has to be the right one for the right model.
I've seen consoles running away in these videos before so this wasn't so bad :D
I bought a "broken" Sega CD as well, the only thing wrong with it was the 4 rubber shock mounts was basically mush which caused the CD to rub against the case.
I sold my megadrive 2 with 12 cartridge games and two sega mega cd II's for $15 in 2009. Now just the megadrive 2 console is $80 by itself.
I often find the contacts give me the most issues, some IPA and cotton swabs usually get me up and running.
The reason 9 times out of 10 that it's the fuse is blown is because the Sega system takes 10 volts the Sega cd takes 9 volts the power supplies look very similar and they use the same plug. So when you accidently plug the genesis power supply into the Sega CD it blows the fuse every time.
Brasso wadding works great on glossy plastic as long as the scratches aren't too deep.
Today is a special day.. I turned on a light. Pretty much my life accomplishments these days!
If that's an early full-board model 2 Genny, you should do the mega amp mod.
Didnt see that chunk of rust as you said 'no sign of water damage', huh? :P
Man I gave up trying to get one of these Sega CD's every time I buy one it last two days and it breaks and i take care of my systems. I think I went through two or three
Soldering has been good to me with retro console fixing... this honestly seems doable! I was thinking it would be much more in depth
I can actually smell the 90s through the screen.
Recently purchased a JVC X-EYE console. It powers on and genesis side works fine but the disc side doesn't spin. Only shudders slightly when turned on. Would you be interested in doing a teardown/ repair for your podcast?
My favourite console bar the Panasonic 3DO
SEGA CD is as expensive as PS5 now days its so crazy I do not understand why its so much more than any other retro console
Damn $80 for a broken Sega CD Model 2? I go lucky about 2 years ago. A guy traded me a working Sega CD Model 2 with the Frankenstein/Bram Stokers Dracula combo, Demolition Man, Sonic CD with no case, Dune, and Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. I traded him $30 and a Dog Kennel I was no longer using.
Right lol. I paid $100 for a complete in box, working model 1 Sega Cd just 2 years ago.
bought a sega cd a couple months ago which unfortunately also had a dead fuse. Mine was the more common board that had the fuse on the bottom rather than a through hole like yours, luckily I was able to replace it and got power again on it. Then I had another issue with the limit switch, unfortunately it was bent backwards so the laser would never know when it was in the center. Fortunately I was able to fix this by stuffing a heat shrinking tube behind it which keeps it in place. with all that work I was finally able to get it working normally, If you ever plan on getting a sega cd make sure you at least have some basic soldering experience. These guys are fragile units.
I still have my OG sega 2 and sega CD my family got when i was a kid. Still works great.
Nice. My system had the exact same issue back in the day, and I replaced the fuse... although with a much kludgier way at the time, sort of clamping it down onto the old fuse. I should probably open it up and fix it properly... but it's also been rolling for 20 years, so go figure!
Also, my experience with the Sega CD (at least the Model 2, never had a Model 1!) and the Saturn are that the lasers are really, really good - far better than the PlayStation, especially with burned media.
I bought an "untested" Mega CD 1 / Megadrive 1 from Ebay 8 years back for £20. No power supplies, AV cables or controllers. Funnily enough everything worked and even CD games can be read. Haven't tested it again so could be broken now. Something to fish out when I get some time off!
Thanks for the video bro
I'm a big fan of resurrecting dead Segas from eBay - I hate seeing any dead electronic, especially ones I love.
The piece that holds the disc keeps falling off on mine. I have to be careful with it and keep opening and closing it to get the disc to spin without hitting.
Dark Wizard is my fave SEGA CD game
Best part about these systems is you can play “backups” without a chip.
Second-best part is it’s almost Genesis-easy to region mod.
Yeah, and the Sega CD laser wasn't finicky like the PSX about burned media. I've got one that reads everything I throw at it, including really cheap media.
Dracula unleashed is one of my favorite point and click/FMV games!! The ending scene/battle has the best music/score in a game of its type. Enjoy!!!! Great Vid btw......
A Sega CD was given to us by a friend, & it had a problem turning on. It got like that from being slammed on all the time by that friend. One of the games we tried was The Terminator. Eventually, after many tries, it turned on. But that was it. It just happened to turn on that time. Guess it was like a hit-&-miss kind of thing. Really like your shirt by the way! 👍🙂
I love the SEGA CD version of The Terminator but the game is hard, I died multiple times because I keep getting killed by the HK-Tank.
Other than getting killed by the HK-Tank multiple times in the game I love the cutscenes and the music.
One day I wanna get a Sega CD for my original Genesis I've got. Even if there aren't a whole lot of games for it, I still want it.
Me too, I have a 32x but no CD
Long as it's not a Jaguar CD anything can't be that bad to fix.
YAY another one saved from the scrap heap well done sir
don't worry, you're gonna get nightmares with the new gen. Some old gen consoles are so easy to repair.
I just ordered a sega cd yesterday. I hope it works, though it did say it was in working condition. If it doesn’t, I’ll look back at this video to see if that’s the case. This was really cool btw
Since then I finally got a fully assembled tower of power with a 3bp modded model 2 genesis & it looks great on my zenith CRT. I’m currently trying to fix a Sony PVM so that I can use my Scart cable for it, along with my newly acquired North American Sega Saturn. It’s unfortunate how not many people have checked the Saturn library because it’s quite enjoyable
Good work Jon. I wish I was half as talented. It was a fun watch.
Waiting for a clone sega cd affordable some day the OG cd based consoles are never ending pain
That box looked like ps5 gone jump out of it.
I did the exact same thing this year added a mega cd to my collection it’s big but it looks so good having it next to my other consoles definitely if you are into console collecting a mega cd is a fine addition to anyone’s collection
Buying broken Sega CDs off Ebay, fixing them, and reselling them was my side hustle 20 years ago. Damn, 20 years ago.
Love watching these. I love to tinker with technology as a hobby lol
I'm kinda dissapointed that Spawn called it "iu. double iu. iu"... Come on, John, just give it to us... Say UwU
With the Model 2 CD it's almost ALWAYS a pico fuse at fault.
Lucky, everytime I do same I get some crazy issue, I'd say 6 out 10 times that happens to me .... Awesome easy fix find!!!
That music is still so freaking good
Second time, I seriously feel like it’s SpawnWave making those stickies with the “UwU” on them.
That is dirty board. You should also invest in a soilder sucker. They are cheap on amazon and will make your repairs easier.
ALWAYS open the lid before taking off/putting on the top case part. The door sensor switch is really fragile and impossible to replace!
Ooooo B02 Funai board. That's an eeeeeearly Model 2 CD.
I'm jealous. This has been on my list for a while. I love your show. I know you have 2 channels and you upload often, but let's get some more content k. Haha. I'll watch it I promise. Thanks!
I have 6 of these in my closet
@@cdub0421 collecting, old stock, holding on for value? What's the reason?
I am giving one to each of my 3 children and the other 3 are ones I bought 20 years ago
Yeah I've got one that's real special to me that I bought 20 years ago in a lot for $75 it had 30 Sega CD games and 25 Genesis games with the Genesis model one inbox and the Sega CD model two was inbox it reminded me of when I was 11 I grew up poor and my family couldn't afford it and I told myself one day I have one and then one turned into six model twos and three model ones
Come on man, you can't have a sega cd without the 32x gotta get them 3 big ass plugs into that power strip that holds 2 😂...
love when i find treasures like this that are that easy, LOL sometimes not always as u know hahah love them
It's basically a broken Sega CD. Nothing remarkable here
Back in the 90's I think every kid wanted a Sega CD just to see first hand how it worked. Growing up with SNES and N64 I wish I could have owned at least one of Sega's line of console honestly. I did own the Dreamcast in 2000 though, which is lightyears better than the CD IMO.
It's still possible to buy a Sega Console as a Nintendo guy ;) My Main Consoles are also from Nintendo (i even have Game & Watch in my Collection), but i bought a Mega Drive (Genesis) with a Master System Adapter and a Game Gear. Some of the exclusives Games are worth playing, even today. Landstalker, Solail, Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) and Castlevania Bloodlines to remind a few.
@@UndeadCollector I'm not really into retro collecting. I don't even own a CRT tv anymore since my last one died about 10 years ago. But watching AVGN and his review made me not feel too bad about missing out on the CD. Thanks for the input though.
@@vigoroushero8623 I understand that. If you are interessted in playing MD Games, there's also the way to play the MD Collection/Classics on PS3/4 and Xbox 360/One. But yeah, if it comes to Mega CD Games, theres not alot to miss. The funny thing is, that i don't even want a Mega CD, because it takes to much space (the reason i bought a Master System Adapter, so i don't need space for another console)
Local shop guy gave me the broken one he had laying around for free. It kind of works. Long loading times, or not loading at all, which I assume is a bad laser, and the Sega CD audio doesn't work, but the stuff from the Genesis does. Ended up just buying a working one from a seller online. Still have the old one, should look into what the problem is and see if I can fix and sell it.
Mine costed 45eur fully functional, And I thought it was a bit pricey...lol
Great video! Awesome shirt!
Is that little board on top some sort of mod that had been done to it? I have seen revisions over the life of a model, but never with an entire board added.
It is NEVER just the fuse. Fuses blow for a reason. Even if it's not immediately obvious.
The root cause action might very one be a one time occurrence. Consider something like a power surge, or someone connecting the wrong power supply. The notion that something else always has to be wrong with the machine... not always true.
@@brandonkick
Somebody somewhere else in the comments here mentioned it was apparently a notorious thing for people to use an NES AV cable and it would inevitably blow its fuse.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu It is. The NES AC Adapter has the same size plug. It fits in the jack, but the Genesis is DC... polarity matters. So you can use a Genesis power plug on an NES no problem. BUT if you plug an NES adapter into a genesis.... yep, blamo.
I had the original, which sat beneath the gen 1 Megadrive...
