Now Trump *has to* go to Barron's graduation. I bet he hates that.
I’m not sure why the US legal system takes eight years to determine whether something could be illegal, when it’s so obvious it’s embarrassing.
It wasn't that long. They knew that he had broken the law but did not have a solid case until Donny boy was no longer in office. Remember....Donny had the protection of his own attorney General who would do everything to help bury the accusations and the proof and he would do that with all of his other cases that are lurking over him if he is re elected but the American people will decide in November on whether or not they want a convicted criminal and grifter as leader of the free world.
They knew but could not come after him until he was no longer in office.
New York had to wait until Trump was out of office to start the process.
Clearly our system regarding oversight of politicians, particularly while in office, needs complete revamping in that:
1) Such oversight cannot be tampered with by the politician themself
2) It is equipped and tasked to take immediate action on any and all potential criminal violations.
The vague “High crimes and misdemeanors” we currently settle for as being sufficient to stand between this country’s security and absolute dissolution. This lone measure cannot be left in the hands of totally partisan members of Congress who are permitted to set marching orders for cliques like the Freedom Caucus to obstruct an immediate criminal justice response to political crime, even that committed flagrantly in full view of the American people. Impeachment has become an impotent absurdity in lieu of genuine law enforcement for political crime when a dalliance with an intern is equated in importance with attempting to overthrow an election or fomenting insurrection and sedition. Recently, it has become a toy to initiate partisan games of spite and retaliation.
Trump repeatedly and regularly broke laws in full view of the nation throughout his term. Worse, he repeatedly engaged in criminal behavior that our deficient criminal codes still deem legal. Trump was allowed to pardon four of his own co-offenders. Kushner was put in charge of policy in the Middle East, COVID policy oversight and “criminal justice reform.” Ivanka was trotted over to the G7 Summit to mingle with the movers and shakers of the world’s destiny. We cannot allow this to continue once Trump and his lemmings are disposed of… it will be a very big job of reform but our future as a nation depends on it.

9:18 - by New York law the max the judge could charge is $1000 per violation of the gag order. The judge stated that he wished he could charge him $150,000 for the amount of damage it’s done but by law he can only charge him $1,000 hence the $9000 for the nine violations.

And I know I heard somewhere recently that there is actually a charge that has to do with running for high political office, to avoid criminal prosecution. One of those things that's a bit harder to prove because you have to really provide tangible evidence of what someone's intention is. That's one of those things that everybody knows it but it's always been a challenge in the legal domain, to prove what somebody was thinking.
But all four of these indictments contain charges, reflecting crimes Trump committed right out in the open, substantiated again and again by his inability to stop running his mouth.

This is sloppy reporting. Merchan explained that the law does not give him discretion to increase the amount of the fine above $1000, which he would otherwise prefer to do as a disincentive, leaving him with incarceration as the only real alternative if the current fines don’t do the job.
