I love how they use colour in this series, like when when Zuko arrives in Kyoshi, the light gets a sort of burned sepia tone. I'm really enjoying your reaction! I always forget how good episode 3 is. Definitely top 5 eps of season 1. That ending of flying away from a desolate air temple that used to be filled with so much life. So good
the live action show is going to include characters and plot lines that don’t happen until the later seasons (which is a weird choice) but i really think yall should finish at least this season and the first few episodes of season 2 before you watch the live action season

I recommend you finish at least Seasons 1 and 2 before doing the live action series. You will be spoiled on certain characters who may show up sooner than they did in the animated series. I would also highly recommend the Korra series. It was great! Each season of Korra feels more like a standalone story than the over arcing tale of Avatar, but it explores the development of the Avatar universe in very interesting ways. It's very entertaining.
Funny you mentioned the break dancing since the voice actor for Zuko started as a break dancer as a child before getting his first acting Role as Rufio in Hook staring Robin Williams.
No, it has not been outright said that Zuko was banished before now, but it was inferred. The show is very good at gradual exposition, allowing you to try to fill in the gaps as you go, and making a stronger impact. This means you also need to be careful as some commentors cannot resist spoiling when viewers ask a question that will be answered later, the rest of us do try to hold them to account though. Suki gave Sokka some of that respect woman juice, he will never forget that (mostly). As everyone has said, watch the animated series first.
As a fan of ATLA, I don't get the hate for Korra, I think it's one of the best animated series of all time! I'm certain you will love it, I think it's an excellent expansion of the Avatar world!

Yeah, this show grows and matures as it goes on. It literally has one of the best character arcs in ANY medium.

About your surprise of the Fire Nation having a good navy... it might help to think of them having "the fires of industry".
For me episode 12 kicked things up a huge notch story wise and the season finale is amazing. Each season gets better too.
