Honestly same, I think it's because he's always been on the run/on a mission, so he never got the chance to fully embrace his culture since the genocide. I know the entire world was at war for 100 years, but some people still got to live a life with a semblance of normalcy. Aang never experienced that after running away from the temple and getting frozen

    • @PaulMenden5659

For me, the fight Azula vs Zuko is almost better than Aang vs Ozai. It had so much more build-up in the seasons before, and we followed the development of Zuko and Azula's descent into madness much more closely.
Their fight is so much more filled with emotion, and the audio with the strings together, the deep, muffled fire sounds, is incredibly good. It's actually really sad and unfortunate story for the two siblings, driven apart and turned against each other by their parents.
It's actually the first time where we see Azula out of breath. Before, she calculated every move to mostly taunt her enemies, but now, Azula just went crazy, and Zuko kept a level head and did not exhaust himself unnecessarily.
(In contrast, for example, to Book 2, Ep1 against Zuko, who she wanted to take prisoner, she only used bending at the very end when Zuko had already exhausted himself)

The entire finale is a masterpiece, but I want to point out one thing I love in particular. On rewatch you realize not a single one of the past Avatars told Aang to kill Ozai. They said to be decisive, only justice will bring peace, you must actively shape your destiny, and put aside your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to save the world. They gave him advice and he interpreted their meaning to be 'kill Ozai' because he thought that was what he had to do, but they did not say that was the right or necessary thing. Aang figured out a way to end it without killing him and followed the advice of all of the Avatars he spoke with in the process. I think its beautiful that he, and we, misunderstand and assume their meaning the first time.

3:35 The two random guys having a conversation in the bomb bay were voiced by the creators
5:05 "Power in fire bending comes from the breath" -Iroh in episode 2
12:57 Zuko was able to redirect it as scene by it flashing in the air, but mid air he wasn't able to perform it exactly right and the lightning went very close to his heart, which is why he was taken down but not killed.
Aang's final move against Ozai looks like one he used against Katara while they were training at the start of "The Cave of Two Lovers". The hand movements seem to be about the same and the water is also similar with a water tendril wrapping around the leg.
Episode 1: The Boy in the Iceberg Episode 61: Avatar Aang. Just in the name titles they are able to show Aang's progression from just a goofy boy trapped in an iceberg for 100 years to a slightly more mature boy ready to take on his responsibilities.
26:19 Ironic you said that Bridget because first word spoken in the series (not counting the Intro): "It's" Last word spoken: "perfect" "It's perfect"
There are 6 comic trilogies set in the next couple of years that address some of your questions and the creators had a hand in them and they are considered canon. They are The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, The North and the South, and Imbalance. There are also a few stand alone comics.
Also as for other upcoming projects the movie you mentioned is actually set to come out October 10th of next year but there isn't any info about it other than they will be in their mid 20s-30s and Dante Basco is returning to voice Zuko but he is the only one returning. There's also a standalone Zuko movie also in the works and a new series set after Legend of Korra and a movie to go with it, and two other series in the works that we have no info on.

I do think it's often forgotten that Azula is a child here. She is 14-15 years old at this point, bred into a life where she is forced to do horrible things as the only way to survive with any affection or pride from her family. Bred to only achieve one goal, ruling the fire nation. And now that it is here, AS A CHILD, it is far too much pressure, especially when the only person she was doing it for, her father, isn't going to be there anymore.

People seem to forget that Aang is a deeply spiritual being. Before meeting the Lion Turtle, he meditated, seemingly seeking guidance from the universe on how to stop the Fire Lord without taking his life. The universe understood Aang's struggle-not only as the Avatar, who has the responsibility to protect the world, but also as the last Airbender, carrying the duty to preserve Air Nomad culture, which values pacifism and respect for all life. In response to his inner conflict, the universe granted Aang a solution through the Lion Turtle's knowledge, enabling him to defeat Fire Lord Ozai without killing him

  • @MrGBH
    @MrGBH 3 месяца назад +34

The spiritbending isn't explicitly explained, but it does make sense from an in-universe standpoint
(I haven't finished the vid yet, so I don't know if you even ask this question, but I'll answer it anyway)
Bending works by moving your chi into the element you're attempting to bend. (Firebending uses the heat inside the user's body as the origin flame)
People have an innate control over their own chi, this is why bloodbending can only be done when empowered by a full Moon.
So altering the chi in another person's body is immensely difficult, but plausible.
I love that this isn't outright explained. The writers wanted everybody, even the audience, to believe that there was no way for Aang to win without killing Ozai. So when he finds that way, he's overcoming the expectations of the entire world.

Agreed, that's the one thing people see as a Deus Ex Machina. While sudden, it didn't magically solve Aang's problem for him, but gave him another option that has it's own significant risks. At the end of the day, Aang still had to make the choice to kill or not, and decide just how much of himself is he willing to put on the line to uphold his and his people's beliefs and successfully energy bend Ozai.

there are so many cool throwbacks in this episode. the long range fire bending shot aang takes at ozai in the air ship, he does the dancing dragon form he and zuko learned from the sun warriors (he just does it fast so its easy to miss), the defensive move that zuko does during the agni kai, where he takes a wide stance and pushed his arms out to the side, thats textbook earthbending form that he obviously picked up while with the gang and toph. (katara does something similar when she was fighting Hama, she head on blocks a water bending attack like an earth bender. no redirecting the flow of the water like you would expect from a water bender, hence the surprise on hama's face) and then that break dance/360 fire spin attack he does to knock azula down, that was the exact move aang hit him with earlier in the show. Zuko took what uncle iroh taught him seriously. he watched/studied other benders and adapted those moves/stances/forms for his fire bending. thats what makes him so damn strong. impeccable detail and continuity in this show. this show is so fucking good!

“Theirs feels like the titanic” in reference to Zuko vs Azula. Yup cuz it’s a tragedy. Zuko was scarred by his father at 13 and it messed him up big time. We also saw his father disliked Zuko so much before then he was willing to kill him because Fire Lord Azulon asked for it. Ozai said “Azula was born lucky” that’s why he favored her and you can see how brainwashed she is to have her father’s approval especially since she also believed her mother didn’t love her. We triumph at Zukos remarkable redemption arc while at that same time, we see Azula who throughout the entirety of the show is shown to be an intelligent, kickass girl lose her sanity as she loses everything and everyone around her almost all at once 😢 Azula is 14 during season 3. super tragic

I watched it as a child and could still appreciate it for sure. Kids understand and pick up on more than you'd think. I remember reading books like this and understanding yhem at 8). I feel like that's easy to forget as an adult. I still remember my first watch, following along as it was airing. It was my part of my introduction to these more complex themes and it was a deeply profound and impactful part of my childhood. It's a core memory and shaped my media tastes and even my worldview.
The great thing about this show is also it's rewatchability. I rewatched it every 1-2y as the mood strikes me, and honestly I notice something new every time. Growing into adulthood (I'm now in my 30s, and was about the same age as the Gaang when I first watched), has only given me a deeper appreciation for the show. I'll never tire of it, and it's always a joy to watch people of all ages discover it.

There are comic book series that are set after the end of season 3, one of the comics is about the saga of zuko finding his mom! So that story does get told, just in a book instead of onscreen.

Now that they're older it's hard to get everyone together at one time. We started Korra, but it's really slow since one of them is usually gone from the group or it's a family event and we can't step away just to watch something.

The most wonderful thing bout this shows finale is that almost everyone fulfilled his arc. The first episode of the show was called the boy in the iceberg. The last one is called Avatar Aang. Think bout that. Aang fulfilled his obvious main arc to save the world from the firelord and not killing him as the monks told him. Zukos Arc finishes as he becomes firelord. Katara ends up with the great and powerful bender Aunt Wu told her back then. Sokka finishes as the leader, who took the battleship fleet down. Tophs Arc remains to trust her friends and dont be so egoistic, which you can see in the chemistry between her, Sokka and Suki. Even Ty Lee fulfills her kind of "side arc" becoming a Kyoshi warrior. She grew up with 6 sisters who looked exact the same. She joined the circus to be outstanding. She loved it to be surrounded by many boys. And in the end she ends up with 6 same looking warriors and understands that is not important to be outstanding. She understands that its just important to be surrounded by real friends not like Azula. About Azula: It was determined, that she will lose it in the end. And I mean not just the end fight. I mean her mental health. The breakdown started when Ty lee and Mai betrayed her. She was always confident about, that she can control everyone by using fear. After her "friends" betrayed her, she had that paranoia that everyone will betray her. Thats why she banished everyone. And the fact that she was beaten up by Katara is for me like Zuko has replaced his bloodline sister with another one. Azulas Arc is very tragic, if you think about, that she is 14 years old and is this kind of girl, just because her father raised her like this. The vision of her mother describes it very well, that she just wanted to be loved by her. All in All I think everyone will agree, that Avatar is the best kids cartoon and a golden piece television history. Thanks to all who read this comment. I just wanted to emphasize my love to the greatest kids show and one of the greatest TV shows ever made.

"Into the Inferno" is my favorite episode of the entire show. The art and animation of the Agni Kai, the MUSIC, so graceful and tragic, so much more powerful and emotional as brother and sister fight. Azula's descent into madness was SO well done, despite being compressed into a mostly a single episode.
    AND...
The very last line of dialogue spoken in the show...is a blind joke.

Last word spoken in the show: "...perfect."

Being able to defeat Ozai without killing him, Even when all the other past avatars thought/deemed it impossible otherwise, really highlights just how strong Aang is as a person and as the avatar.
Yangchen, an air nomad just like Aang even, went as far as to tell him that sacrificing what he believed in was the only way. In the face of what seemed to be an unstoppable evil, Aangs passion and dedication in his beliefs never wavered.
Aang is the literal personification of what the lion-turtle preached; “The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can touch the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginningless time, darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light.”
The part that really draws a parallel is this line in specific; “The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost.”
Aangs friends, teachers, and even his own past lives told him that killing Ozai was the only way. A “lie” or an “illusion” they all told their selves to justify murder.
But Aang, even after admitting that the world would probably be better off without Ozai, couldn’t lie to himself. He was taught as a monk that all life is precious and must be treated as such. Who is he to decide if a person lives or dies? No amount of being “good” or “evil” morally justifies murder.
Aang “weathered all the lies and illusions without being lost.”
Aang literally “touched the poison of hatred without being harmed.”
And in the end the “darkness thrived in the void but yielded to purifying light.”

Momo is so underrated and such a loyal animal. Even during the final battle, he has been following Aang all the way. During the Drill episode, when Azula attacks Aang, again Aang asks Momo to leave, but comes back in a clutch moment to help Aang get back on the Drill to finish what he was doing. Otherwise, Aang would have fallen and would never be able to come back to the top again in time to finish things off. Momo followed Aang when he was sleepwalking to the Lion Turtle as well. Bumi, who also has animal companions and respects animals like Aang, says there is nothing to worry about as long as Momo is with Aang. There are so many moments like that with Momo, that we usually take for granted.

And Aang DOGWALKING Ozai at the end is SO satisfyingly epic. When he CONDENSED the boulders and then turned one into a machine gun is easily my favorite attack to ever be seen in the verse, Ozai is so lucky he didn’t get made into Swiss cheese 🤣
And like Zuko VS Azula is a visual and thematic MASTERPIECE. I get goosebumps EVERYTIME.
But it NEEDS to be said how incredibly sad Azulas story is. Like jsut cuz she WASNT being physically abused like Zuko was DOESNT mena she’s not EQUALLY as much a victim of ozais abuse it’s jsut entirely different being psychological instead. He legit DESTROYES his daughter, who I might remind people is only FOURTEEN. Legit FORCED her to carry the weight of his expectations and turned her into nothing more than a weapon. And now she’s having literal psychotic breaks where she’s hallucinating people she’s thinks are dead hate her. It’s INCREDIBLY SAD and She deserves just as much sympathy as Zuko FULL STOP🤷🏻‍♂️ like Zuko needed YEARS alone with iroh to even make a DENT in his indoctrination, people who say Azula is “just evil” legit missed the ENTIRE point of Zuko’s arc🤷🏻‍♂️

The thing with Azula is that in one way, she is just as much of a victim of her parents. Ozai was always going to favor her because she was second born, just like him. He began manipulating her when she was a child. Zuko and Azula's mother really had no chance of helping her. Their mother also has blame because she did favor Zuko. Azula is a villain, but I think many write off her behaviors to her "just being evil". Sure she is evil, but that was cultivated in her by Ozai. She desperately wanted her mother's love as much as Zuko wanted Ozai's. Zuko had Iron, and Azula really had no one.
Azula never really stood a chance, hence her breakdown. She's only 14 after all. Zuko was able to find out who he is, Azula was told what she was and accepted it. I am not absolving her, as her actions are her own.

"you're weak, just like the rest of your people! They did not deserve to live in this world! In my world!" Is a pretty good distillation of the conflict of the episode.
In the episode, the show raises the question implied in the title of the show; can Aang be both the Avatar and the Last Airbender? The final conclusion is yes he can. By refusing to kill Ozai and finding a way to continue on his peoples culture without desecrating their most sacred belief, he directly challenged Ozai and the Fire Nation's entire ideology and won.

    "This can't be the end."
    *The End*
    xD
Well, technically, the story of Aang and his friends goes on in the official comics.
There are 6 more stories told in those comics, each story told in 3 volumes. So 18 comics.
Which is also the part, where it is revealed what happens to Zukos mother ... which I still have to read myself, as I have only read the 1st 3 volumes so far xD
There is a RUclips project, called "Book 4: Air - Restoration Project" ... they are working on a kind of "Audiobook" for the comics. Well "Audiobook" is kinda the wrong term.
They animate the comic pages and have a lot of voice actors do their part to "animate" the comics.
The entirety of the first story is already out (The Promise), while the 2nd story (The Search) is work in progress and the release of the first chapter is going to be expected soon.
So if you don't want to read the comics yourself, you could give it a look. Maybe even a react. Each of the 5 episodes that are released so far, are between 30 and 50 min. long.
Edit: I thought it were only 3 stories, but apparently there are 3 more, so I adjusted the numbers xD

She’s still just a young girl. And think about HOW she was raised and WHO she was raised by. It makes sense that she would accept fear in the place of genuine love or compassion.
And let’s not forget that Zuko would have turned out exactly like her, but he got lucky. Zuko may not have gotten his father’s love like he wanted, but he always knew his mother loved him. And he also had Iroh around to guide him. Azula had neither of those things. She was alone. I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again: Zuko was not the only who was scarred and traumatized by Ozai.
