Hi. I'm Ethan, I run a cooking channel called Cook with E, but this is my personal channel where I'm going to make videos on things that aren't directly related to food.
I'm living in Mexico City for 35 days, but I thought it would be interesting to document my impressions for the first 24 hours in Ciudad de Mexico, good or bad, and see how they change after 34 days, so here they are. I have split the impressions up into kind of broad categories of people / interactions, the food, and the city itself like the weather / infrastructure, so if you want to, feel free to skip around (Time stamps in the comments)

Based on all the comments I'm getting regarding the term 'American'. This is what I have to say about it:
As citizens of the US, we don't call ourselves Americans from a place of arrogance, or narcissism. Based on the comments, I feel this is a big misconception. More simply, the term 'American' in the English language has evolved over a couple hundred years to refer to a US citizen or US native, and it's a term that has stuck and is recognized. That being said, I recognize in Spanish there is the term 'estadounidenses' to refer to citizens of the US. In the English language, there is not an equivalent term. When in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries, I have no problem using the preferred term and am happy to tell others visiting to do the same. On the other hand, when speaking English or in the US, recognize that's how we refer to ourselves. Again, it's a term that has evolved to mean what it does, it is common place in the English language, and isn't meant to be arrogant in any way nor should it be taken as meaning such.
At the end of the day, I made this video to share the experiences I had in the first 24 hours of Mexico City and break down some misconceptions people may have about Mexico City. Over the past 4 weeks, I have enjoyed every minute of it from the sights, the food, and the people and would highly recommend people visit this country / city. Let's not get caught up in an internet fight about a common term that really is not worth getting angry or upset about. Let's learn from each other, celebrate and respect our differences.

Brother. The correct way To you guy' can identify. Is( Anglo )Americans. Like afrobeat American or Mexican American. The only Americans are the Aztecs, mayans, Toltecs, Apache's, siuxs, arapaho, comanches Holmecs , tarascos , otomis. Incas Eric etc. Brawn skin only are Americans even. Not us as a mestizos. Because we are mixed. Half european half Aztecs. So again. The only Americans or the ancient cultures and synthesis. Only the one with brawn color are the real Americans. So no one who. Are white or tan. Or either blackones. Can be call it American. So you are (Anglo American.) Not American. I say this with all respect and honestly

    • @MA-zv8wn
      @MA-zv8wn 4 года назад +1

The term is incorrect. You must to say correctly. United state of north America. Because. That's why we have centro America. And south America. You should to writing and speak correctly. Because. Imagine Mexico name is also United state. Do you know that????? So. We must to Express correctly. You are USA Citizen. Of north America. But first usa. Citizen. Only that because American are all along the continent. Not matter what language. You mean. Speak and Express correctly. You are usa Citizen estadunidense

@@MA-zv8wn I know Mexico is also united states, that's also why one could argue the term estadounidense which means 'United States', isn't a great one either as there are the United States of American and the United Mexico States. Overtime, the term estadounidense in the Spanish language has come to refer to people from the USA, just as American in the English language has come to refer to people from the USA. *Neither are incorrect, it's how the terms are used in their respective languages.*

I lived in CDMX for six months in 2018-2019 and I’ll be back again in a week! Yay 😁 🎉🎉 I ❤️ Mexico City 🇲🇽
    .
FYI, Mexican food is not about “spiciness”-that’s the Gringo narrative. True Mexican food is about complex flavors and fresh & native ingredients. The chiles and salsas are meant to add an additional layer of flavor, at the level of spice you prefer. Important distinction. If you want to learn about a foreigner who has truly researched Mexican food at a deep level, look up Rene Redzepi the head chef at Noma in Denmark-at one time the -#1 restaurant in the world.

03:10 - Mexico's capital city has banned the use of plastic bags. It is the latest city trying to cut back on single-use plastics. Mexico City produces an estimated 4.7 million metric tonnes of waste every year. Less than 4 percent of that is recycled.

a bit of advice, keep in mind that this chaotic city, grew by eating out small little towns, so each neighborhood has it's on style.. so: explore everything, from gourmet to street food.
Centro, San Angel, Coyoacan, Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Santa Fe are the nice parts, do try to explore in between places..

There are two local joints in Condesa, one is El Pescadito for the best fish tacos in Mexico City, and if you are a meat eater go to Los Chamorros de Tlacoquemecatl restaurant and indulge with chamorros. For an amazing Mexican Style Pizza try Pizza del Perro Negro....that is real fusion. Ha! 😁

About grocery store bags: it’s actually something that just changed when you got to Mexico; it became a law not to give bags because of ecologic reasons, just happened here in Mexico City, before that law, yes, there were plastic bags at any store, at supermarkets there were the “cerillos” (the translation would be matchsticks, that’s how they’re called), the guys that used to put the stuff you bought in bags, that worked for the tips the buyers would give to them; they used to be, many years ago, kids those that worked as cerillos, but in recent times, and until the use of bags became illegal, it became an option for old retired people without an income. There are still some places that have cerillos, but since most people either don’t use a bag if there’s not too much they bought, or many prefer to do it on their own when it comes to their own bags, it became not so common to have cerillos at supermarkets.
About water: actually many years ago people used too much filters for tap water, but recently it changed and now it’s more common to use bottled water for drinking when going out, but at home or business, there are the jugs of water. Now, in fact water at some zones is good enough to be drank directly, but not at too many places, and not always people get to know the local studies about water quality, so many people wouldn’t like to take tap water. In my case: I actually don’t have any problem drinking tap water, since the water studies for the water at my neighborhood indicate that the water is ok for drinking. Still many times I don’t use a filter or use jugs, but still use to boil the water.

Mr. Ethan Chlebowski! Overall, great video and good editing, too. You also have excellent tips for tourists. Yeah, you are correct, as of yet there is no translation to English for "estadounidense". But as you already know, overtime, language is always changing. It's dynamic and adapts to the needs of the speakers. Perhaps, we should initiate and employ an equivalent term to avoid coming across as arrogant or narcissistic to the other inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere. The Western Hemisphere is 28.4% of the earth's land area. The population of the Western Hemisphere is 965,000,000 people. And the population of the United States is 331,000,000 people. Therefore, the U.S. contains about 34% of the population in the Western Hemisphere. Anyhow, sometimes I use the term "United Stateser", "United Statesman", "United-Statesian", etc. Apparently, those terms have been around since the mid 19th century. If enough people use them, eventually they will be incorporated into the various English dictionaries. What is more important, is that you are promoting understanding and communication among various cultures (languages, religions, & customs). Thank you for your thought provoking topics that merit a discussion. Please don't let this so called "U.S. identity debate" dissuade you from your journey of fostering understanding, peace, and fun. Espero que
en el futuro hables mas Español. Es el segundo mas hablado idioma en el mundo. El Inglés es el tercero.

Your commentary is well appreciated. As a Mexican-American, I can tell you that I had thought about the same things before I traveled to Mexico City. But while I was there, I began to realize how foolish I had been for listening to the US media and people who had never even been there before. They put these horrifying thoughts in my head before I left. But the people in Mexico City and the food made me feel at home. I felt safe and happy the whole time. It’s just a matter of asking yourself logical questions: 1. why would anyone drink tap water anyway? It’s nasty. Period. 2. Would you EVER get into a questionable vehicle without asking? 3. Would you EVER flaunt your goods or cash in public?
