This was definitely better than RG 2021 overall, Rafa nearly bageled Novak in the first set in that and Rafa had nothing left to give after leading 2-0 early in the 4th. The 3rd set of RG 2021 was amazing but this 2018 Wimbledon semi final was better overall for sure.
@@ashleythomas4112 agreed. Not even a competition. This match eats that RG 2021 Semifinal for breakfast but yes the stakes were higher there. This match is SUBLIME. PURE.

The best match ever on Wimbledon. Brutal quality, that one and 2012 finals Aus open. And Aus open 2019 but in that one was brutal dominance from Novak.
@@filliusawusi6174 2019 AO one was a dud (coming from Novak fan!) and the Wimbledon against Federer the same year was average quality at most as both played only occasionally good tennis (Djokovic on tie breaks of all three winning sets! Federer in the entire 2nd set and in the end of 4th!…) Greatest Djokodal match is clearly 2012 AO as both were still in their prime! (No offence to 2018 Wimbledon...), greatest Fedal match is the Wimbledon 2008 (clearly!), while greatest Djokerer match is 2014 Wimbledon!…(again no offence to 2019 Wimbledon...)
This has been the greatest Wimbledon match of all time in terms of quality with two of the greatest of all time fighting it out in every point. Just because it wasn't a final it doesn't get the credit as the greatest match to be ever witnessed!
Djokovic is actually a better grass player now than hard court..so much variety of shots and speed control..perfect for grass...he will win at least couple of more wimbledon titles for sure...even or surpass federer...
Watching Nadal slips on 9-8 in fifth set and 30-0 for Nole was very sad for me,altough I am Novak fan.I really appreciate Nadal and I think that NADAL AND DJOKOVIC ARE 2 GREATEST PLAYERS OF ALL TIME.
Federer and Rafael Nadal got a chance to defeat Djokovic at Wimbledon 2018 and 2019 both missed it 7-7 40-15 got break points for Nadal and lost to Djokovic 😭😭 Just like Federer in Wimbledon 2019 finals both are in same team actually Chokdal Chokderer
4:55:00 is probably the most important moment. Nadal break point at 7-7 2 sets a piece. Massive games are won at such small margins. This really could have went either way.
Wimbledon 2011, becomes world No1 for the first time. Wimbledon 2014, begins his two year domination after a long GS drought. Wimbledon 2018, makes return after operation of elbow and begins another 3 years domination. Wimbledon 2022, after all the media and Australian government torture, closes the gap between Rafa and him and stays in the GS all time race. Wimbledon is a really special place for Novak.
@@CW-rx2js Nadal reached semifinals after 6 years actually at Wimbledon who lost to outside top 100 from 2012 to 2017 actually. So Nadal what he did is greater everybody knew he would come back at Wimbledon for sure but not Nadal Everybody thought he is finished in Wimbledon for sure it is greatest comeback for Nadal actually at Wimbledon than Djokovic
Even after a year has gone by, I am still hurting by this loss. Rafa was so close to getting past the line. 4:55:03 was the point probably where the match turned. Hats off to Novak for hanging in tight and prevailing in the end. This was probably the victory that gave him belief he can return to the top. Such an insane level of Tennis
The break points in 4-4 and 7-7 could have changed a lot the dynamics in tennis and the records. If Nadal had won the match (and we can suppose he would have won the final) he would have a 3rd Wimbledon. He would have tied Novak with 3 Wimbledon and would have probably finished ranked 1st that season. Could have been 3 years in a row for Nadal. It could have changed how we see those rivalries. It might have changed the outcome of the following years, so who knows.
@@turinturambar501yes but the same could be said for the FO2013 SF - had novak managed to win that it would have undisputably swung the pendulum in his favour and I believe he would have a much larger lead in the GS total than just one. It was a testament to rafa's own greatness as a champion that he won that match. I believe that match was the best novak has ever played on clay and in the end it was a debilitating loss that affected him mentally for months afterwards which I also believe factored in to why rafa was able to beat him in the us open final later that same year. A testament to the great champion novak is though is that he eventually recovered to become the strongest mental giant the sport has ever seen if not all sports! 💪

People often forget about this match when talking about the greatest tennis matches of all time. This was such clean tennis and an unbelievable match. Probably my favourite match between Djokovic and Nadal even over their match in Australian open 2012.
Lmao no it wasn’t, 2019 Djokovic would’ve beaten Nadal in four sets. There’s a reason Federer beat Nadal in four in the 2019 semi-final. It was a higher level of play
@@bdgregorybd Absolutely not, Djokovic was playing substantially better in this match, and this is not an opinion, It is backed up by clear statistics. 72 winners in this one, 56 or something in 2019, and he played better in almost any other areas. The problem Novak had in 2019 is he really struggled to read Federer's serve for most of the match (credit to Federer). Roger's serve also worked very well against Rafa in the semis but the fact that Rafa was playing way worse than he was here. In this match against Djokovic, Rafa was playing at his absolute best and It's veeeery tough to beat him in this mode for anyone
@@theobecquet8477 Djokovic is not at his best on both 2018 and 2019 and he had a elbow surgery in February 2018 and was struggling whole year and I must say he played about 70-75 percent of his best here also he injured himself in the quarterfinals and said growing impatient between the shots and also he lacked something consistency in his shots when compared to 2011-2015. It’s just not perfect but somehow his mental toughness and serve helped him at crucial times.

@@bradleyowusu3974 The first set was good, the second set was horrible, I've never seen Djokovic play so bad. He played better when he got bageled in the first set against Nadal in Rome. The third set was good, the fourth set was good, then the fifth set was epic and both players were choking, but unfortunately Djokovic held his nerve in the end. Still credit to Djokovic especially with the crowd being against him.
Novak's return in the first point with Nadal serving 8-9 in the final set....right at his feet. He does that in crunch time of all their big matches. Absurd returns on great first serves.....that gave him the momentum to the finish line.
Imagine being Djokovic...one of the three greatest male players ever, countless trophies, 100 per cent effort every time, and yet still nowhere near as loved as Nadal and Federer. Deep down that must sting, if I was Djokovic I'd be gutted.
This victory was crucial in the battle for GOAT. Djokovic ended a two-year streak without winning GS. This victory, Wimbledon 2019 against Roger and Roland Garros 2020 against Rafa are the three GS victories that give Nole the GOAT status.
Novak's return on the opening point at 9-8 in the fifth is the difference maker. Late in the match, he always puts pressure on the server with perfect returns. Rafa hit this one beautifully and Novak returned it with interest right at his feet. Just a few points make the difference and he often turns the tide when it means the most with his brilliant returns of serve.
I haven't been into tennis for a long time but am watching more and more in last few years the GS and keeping track of the players. My view on Novak's game: #1 He knows where to put the ball to exert maximum pressure on the opponent. It's like he sees the court in lots of different smaller zones. #2 He has the technical ability to hit those shots. #3 He knows his return is a big weapon as it's the earliest stage which allows him to change momentum of the point in his favour. #4 His undying self belief in his own abilities.
Best match since Roland garros 2013 semi final so sad that Rafa lost he had so many break points in 5th set Thanks Wimbledon for uploading this amazing match
Very painful loss as a Rafa fan, as he has break points in the 5th set, and if he got to the final, nearly certain hat he would the win the title.. But, that's how the sport goes
' The most important match in Novak Djokovic's career ' is an understatement !! This Wimbledon title came at a time where he was lost for motivation to play more , as qouted by Jelena ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Man this match really hurt me as a Nadal fan I love seeing Nadal win on clay but this was his best opportunity to win on grass, a surface he hasn't won on in years hopefully Nadal will win one more wimbledon before he retires that's all I want. But congrats to Djokovic for this amazing win and I was thoroughly entertained this match and the 5th set made me frustrated as a Nadal fan to see him mniss chances to win but props to Djokovic for his mental strength and fight
People forget how good Nadal was on grass. Now it's all Federer (of course) and Novak, but Nadal from 2006 to 2011 (he didn't play in 2009) chained 5 Wimbledon finals winning 2 of them. Playing 3 straight finals agaisnt Prime Federer. Nadal was already considered top 10 grass players ever. Sure he had a low period in 2012-2017, but then the last 3 times he's played he's reached the semifinals, almost winning to Djokovic in 2018, playing great against Federer in 2019 and withdrawing due to injury in 2022. Those that were there will remember that Novak wasn't considered better than Nadal in grass until 2019 or so. There's not that much difference, althought I think Novak's game is better on grass. And all respect to the legend, but Wimbledon 2021 and 2022 shouldn't count as much as, say, 2018 and 2019; uncomparable.
I admire Djokovic and considering just stats it's clear that he deserved the GOAT status, but being fair and honest he won most of the GS after 2015 (specially 2018-2023)when there was no real competition except for worn out Fed and chronic-injured Nadal @@turinturambar501

Rafa used baseline power and defensive skills to win against Roger, a match he should have closed out way earlier than he did. Rafa hasn't reached the Wimby final since 2011. He's suffered on grass year after year. 2018 was the first year when he legit competed like the old times. And he was the better player against Novak. Should have won. Serve, forehand, net rushing everything was working well. But Novak is a monster in 5th set and managed to get the decisive break!

Best match I've ever seen. Djoko/Nadal is my favorite matchup.
Probably the greatest level of tennis to this point. AO 2012 is oof the charts.
The day Djokovic rose from the ashes like a Phoenix.

I thought this was the best we had seen between these two legends. Then. RG'21 blew my mind.
US Open 2011 still my favourite match between them!
This will be always their greatest match for me
This was definitely better than RG 2021 overall, Rafa nearly bageled Novak in the first set in that and Rafa had nothing left to give after leading 2-0 early in the 4th.

Along with the Wimbledon 2019 Final..
@@filliusawusi6174 2019 AO one was a dud (coming from Novak fan!) and the Wimbledon against Federer the same year was average quality at most as both played only occasionally good tennis (Djokovic on tie breaks of all three winning sets!

Djokovic barely could get a hold of Federer, bar the important points. He looked 'of' in that match and still managed to win it.

Roland Garros 2021 not 2020
2020 was just destruction I don't even want to remember it lol
Their battle is not over until they retire
Novak's return on the opening point at 9-8 in the fifth is the difference maker. Late in the match, he always puts pressure on the server with perfect returns. Rafa hit this one beautifully and Novak returned it with interest right at his feet. Just a few points make the difference and he often turns the tide when it means the most with his brilliant returns of serve.
I haven't been into tennis for a long time but am watching more and more in last few years the GS and keeping track of the players.
My view on Novak's game:
#1 He knows where to put the ball to exert maximum pressure on the opponent. It's like he sees the court in lots of different smaller zones.
#2 He has the technical ability to hit those shots.
#3 He knows his return is a big weapon as it's the earliest stage which allows him to change momentum of the point in his favour.
#4 His undying self belief in his own abilities.
Could watch these two play all day long,ABSOLUTE LEGENDS, both of em🙏

This epic battle confirms novak comback after his slump previous two years as he won about 8 slams after that. I always admire how much more rafa would won grand slams(more than 25 to28) if there is no djokovic between his route.
Exactly, he would have won perhaps 28..
I watch tennis since the first all england championship i think it was in the year 1876 or 1877...i saw tennis players like william renshaw, bill tilden, rosewelt, rod laver, borg, sampras, federer and of course the greatest clay court player of all time David Ferrer BUT i never saw a better tennis player as Novak Djokovic.....and that come from a federer fan
I'mmanipuri cinema
David Ferrer??
Ok. Wake up. Time to school kiddo
Nadal has more flair and touch in grass courts. His six finals proves it.Djokovic game is more clumsy.Djokovic was lucky to scrape through A.O.12 and wimby 2018
Novak has grown from inside beetween two sports legends..
jairo rodriguez Djokovic is definitely one of the greatest tennis players who has ever graced this sport, perhaps even better overall than Federer and Nadal, having won 15 grand slam titles in the most competitive era where he faced Federer, Nadal or Murray in every single grand slam title he won besides the 2018 US open. Djokovic is a beast on the court but he is also an extremely bright person, eloquent, well mannered, respectable, funny and easy going person outside court. I am surprised Novak doesn't get as much respect as his two contemporaries.
Boris Lemeshev sorry, nadal is definitely berger than djoko
@@pacifist1360 most competitive era was when Nadal completed his career GrandSlam i.e. 2010, that was the last time wawrinka delpo cilic isner soderling Murray djokovik posed extreme threat to Nadal and Federer monopoly and still Nadal came up on top. In 2011 cilic and delpo were too weak and new gen was coming in too weak also Nadal seemed to lost focus as he lost so many titles even once where djokovik didn't participate.
@@graphennn954 lol nice joke
@@pacifist1360 competitive era? Federer is way past his prime and Nadal's injury, that's the main reason Djokovic on top. No fanboy, Djokovic is great player but he's not the same level to both prime Federer and Nadal.
5:13:35 Tim Henman mentioning the tiebreak at 12-12 as it was introduced 1 year later and played in the final :)
One of the best matches I've ever seen
and then to play in the final the next day...incredible.
Two of greatest playing amazing tennis, just so lucky to be watching these two and federer at the same time cos its phenomenal
In my opinion this is the best tennis match ever
An Unbelievable match similar to the legendary final of 08, which ended in darkness where as this one was a modern day theatrical classic underneath the roof with a 11pm curfew because of which it spanned for two days. Yes ppl anticipating a repeat of history were right as we did get “strokes of genius” 10 years later
The greatest rivalry in tennis history and by far!
I prefer federer but i miss admit thatDjokovic Is the ultimate player.
Turning point of the GOAT competition
Serving first in the fifth is one of the biggest advantages ever.
Besides his iron rock will, it all came together for Djokovic here with the suspension, indoors, serving first in fifth.
Indoors was a huge advantage
The biggest advantage was that he is Djokovic
