    Dustin Brown is everything that is great about greatness that is not mainstream. He is the chaos, the flair, the stunning surprise, the underdog, the periphery, the refusal to be the predictable. The astonishing film that isn't Hollywood, the captivating music that is unconventional, the coin that lands on the edge. I love him.

    It was clear how much Nadal didn't want to be playing this match. Nadal usually wins when people play his game, but Dustin always plays his own game, win or lose.

      This is what separates Djokovic from Nadal. Novak adapts to his opponents gimmicks such as the time Roger kept annoying him with SABR tactic, Novak respond back with lobs.

    • @gauravmalltarlok5354
      @gauravmalltarlok5354 3 года назад +13

      @@josecalderon9487 I agree with the lob tactic, but Novak hasn't done much to deal with Roger. Mostly Novak just waits for Roger to do an unforced error or outlast him physically. That's a kind of adaptation. When Novak plays aggressively against Roger he loses, when he plays the classic Novak way he wins.

    • @josecalderon9487
      @josecalderon9487 3 года назад +2

      @@gauravmalltarlok5354 Djokovic's been very successful playing Roger that way so if nothing's broken, no need to fix anything. Nadal had the 2017 AO title in his hands. He was up a break in the 5th set against Roger but he didn't change strategy. Nadal kept hitting his lefty forehand to Roger's backhand even though the cat was already out of the bag and Roger's backhand was no longer a weakness. Lubijic fixed up Roger's one-hand backhand yet Nadal didn't adapt.

    Dustin had nadal just where he wanted him: Killer serves, beautiful returns, drop shots out of no where, unexpected rushes to the net, exquisite volleys. Kept Rafa guessing at everything. Monfils made number 6 in the world in 2016, he made impact and has gone further than Brown, he's still only 45 now, Brown hasn't done as good, his peak was 64, again in 2016, and like a few players this year he's announced he'll be retiring at the end of this season cos of a persistent injury that started in 2018. This match was his peak.

    Brown has the skill to be top 10, maybe even the best. this isn't a one time thing for him, he's shown that he can dominate Gasquet, and has beaten other top players. His only limit is a bad lower back problem, which stops him from appearing consistently.

But he has to improve on his focus and seriousness and getting into the business by prioritise and focus on winning more than having joyous fun on the court. It is matches like this that convincingly demonstrate that Nadal's overall body of work is vastly inferior to Roger Federer's.
    Wimbledon is arguably Nadal's weakest slam event, even though he has two titles there and only one in Melbourne. Since losing the 2011 final to Djokovic, here are Nadal's Wimby results:
    2012: Lost to 100th ranked Rosol in the 2nd round
    2013: Lost to 135th ranked Darcis in the 1st round
    2014: Lost to 143rd ranked Kyrgios in the 4th round
    2015: Lost to Dustin Brown I in the 2nd round in this video. I don't think Brown was in the top 100 at this time.
    2016: Skipped Wimbledon
    2017: Lost to 34 year old Giles Muller in the 4th round.
    Conversely, Federer's worst slam/surface is the clay at Roland Garros. Since Federer won the French in 2009, here are his results in Paris:
    2010: Lost in the aurters to Robin Soderling, a 2-time French finalist
    2011: Lost in the Final to Nadal
    2012: Lost in the semifinals to Djokovic
    2013: Lost to Tsonga in the quarters
    2014: Lost to Gulbis in the 4th round. Gulsbis was seeded 18th and this was the worst opponent Fed lost to in this span.
    2015: Lost in the quarters to 8th seeded and eventual champion Wawrinka
    2016 and 2017: Skipped the French
    Federer rarely loses to journeyman players at the slam events. Nadal's ledger is littered with defeats to the likes of Brown, et. al
    Since Nadal won his first slam at 2005 French, and not counting tournaments he has missed, he has failed to make the quarters in a slam 13 times. For Federer, since he won his first slam at 2003 WImby, the total is 5.
    Federer, 52 slams, entered, quarters or better 47 times
    Nadal, 44 slams entered, quarters or better 31 times
    # of slam titles outside of preferred surface: Nadal: 5
    Federer: 11
    Absent from slams:
    Nadal: 5
    Federer: 3 (and two of those are the last two French opens)

    What a terrible match for Nadal! I'm a big fan of Rafa, so when I saw him loose so badly that day, I was devastated. Remember: 2015 was Nadal's black year.
    Brown took insane risks all the time and it worked! It is almost impossible to beat that kind of player, when every hit he attempts works. Nadal likes to dictate his own game, his own tempo to his opponents, but that day, he had no other choice than to play Browns game...

      True, but Brown's game definitely had a hand in it. The mental pressure of having to deal with 70 to 90 mph returns every time wore on him. In addition, Nadal does not have the finesse of Federer to return or redirect fast groundstrokes near his feet.
