Dude I think this was the perfect addition to the HD lineup. Such a clean slate for any type of build. Club style, bobber, touring, I can see this fitting a lot of needs.
I've always said if you're just going to customize the standard is the perfect slat
Make sure you use nothing but subpar Harley branded aftermarket parts on this clean slate or your warranty will be taken from you
Tran Cat if it’s “Harley branded” then it isn’t aftermarket. And if you’re going to put an AFTERMARKET engine component on your bike, then have a problem with your engine, then why on earth would you expect Harley to take responsibility? You don’t go to Burger King and complain because the french fries you got at McDonald’s were cold. Use your head.
Tran Cat pwhat cost the bike
Just bought this bike today, happy Father’s Day to me lol
Congrats... likewise..I traded my Kawasaki ninja 1000, for this bike. It will go well with my Triumph speed triple rs..
Lucky u. May I ask ur age?
The bells and whistles on a motorcycle is the road you are travelling down ;-)
Miss the "Duck Tail" on FXST
This was the thing I didn't like about it too. Should have been more differentiated from Street Bob. I'm also not a fan of the digital clamp speedo, would rather have seen a dash and "analog" style speedo. Especially since I think I saw some blurb about "old school customization".
Also wish it was forward controls rather than mid. Thought the whole point of FXST/FXSTC was to get that bobbed chopper look. This just doesn't have that despite the polished bits instead of being totally blacked out everywhere.
I couldn't figure out what made it not look like an old FXST..but thx..the bob tail!!!
Plus 21 Front wheel
A softtail standard “2001” was my first Harley because of the price and I loved that bike. Right up to when a hit a dog on the interstate and totaled it in 2007. I have many great memories of it. Harley needs this type of bike for people wanting their first one. Then again I love all the Harley’s I’ve had sense then but the standard give me my start.
@@bernardlesperance742
Its dog shit
Softail Standard should come with a 3 gallon Jerry can and mounting rack...standard.
I was waiting for you to show us the new Standard! Thanks for the video.
I can't help but say I miss the "old" softail standard styling, with the bobtail rear fender, 21" front wheel and buckhorn bars. Just saying...
And they didn't have the smaller 1200 sportster tank.
I think harley could have used the 4.5 gallon tank, like the low rider
And used the forward controls like the old softail had..they just changed the paint scheme of the StreetBob...and rebadged it..you know they must be losing money now!!!
.
Anyone asking for a bigger front wheel and forward controls is obviously an old man. Younger riders like to actually ride their bikes now, not just sit back and go slow.
Well my friend ..I have rode the living shit out of my share of 21 inch front tire ,and forward control Harleys..and I'm 49...so if you consider that old then I'm old...but also we who remember what a softail standard looked like want that same look when we here that name...not a rebadged Streetbob...so in reality it should be called a Streetbob standard..
It's good to see Harley get back to basics with a reasonably priced bike that people actually want. The seat has to go and like the look of the tank but would prefer a 5 gallon tank.
I find myself coming full circle and really starting to appreciate the true joy of motorcycling without all the distractions of fully loaded touring bikes.
Just got a 2021 Softail Standard. I love the shit out of it. I plan on putting bags on it, a highway bar, Memphis shades fairing, sissy bar, and either rear seat or luggage rack. Even without all of that I love the barebones look of it. It was exactly what I was after. It has a ton of power and can be used for basically anything from commuting, riding around town, and touring. It also fit my budget quite perfectly. So far I love it!
Wow really excited to see you make a video on one of these so quickly, really cool!
I like the concept...low priced entry level big twin...but the gas tank kills it for me. Not the capacity like most will complain, but the looks of it. But who am I kidding, I’m not getting a new bike anytime soon...wife would kill me.
I agree, the tank looks like a jellybean.
I know the tank the seat and rear fender just look kinda cheap and don’t have the classic Harley look I can’t get over it.
@@MrJeepmarine Black jellybeans always seems to the the last ones left in the jar :)
😝
I've had two softails. Now I have a roadglide. Love the softail standard. Its about time Harley came out with an affordable softail.
Yeah the Softail Standard is a nice-looking bike I think. And like you said at an affordable price.
2 videos in one week? Hell YEAH!
choices are always good. would be perfect for a first time buyer.
Glad to see the new owners are letting you continue these in-shop vids. That's what set your channel apart 🤘
February and riding in short sleeves. Great weather now it’s dry
Harley needs a longer warranty for these prices.
It's 2years standard. All the Japanese companies are 1 year even on their super expensive stuff like the CBR1000RR-R that brand new 28K Bike?
1 year warranty.
FranBunnyFFXII Japanese brands have 2, some of them 3 year warranties.
@@timonstettler8403 No they dont.
I literally looked this up a few days ago.
All of of them are 1 year on their almost every bike.

Do your research before you open your stupid mouth.
Harley used to be a one year only warranty. A while back, they went to two.
@Rick Simpson twin cam 96 had a different plastic shoe and hydraulic tensioner. The previous twin cam 88, had sprung chain tensioners. 1999 to 2006 had some issues with the plastic shoes. The chain ate through the plastic and if you didn't catch it soon enough, you took out the oil pump too.
I have a 2007 softail standard and I love it. It has that old classic Harley look and that works for me.
Good to see another awesome video brother 💯✌️😎
Black an chrome is my favorite! Along with a solo seat
I have always loved harleys from as long as I can remember I have had 5 harleys to date and have a 103 heritage lovely bike regards Alan from the UK
@Rick Simpson No never had that dream regards Alan
@Rick Simpson that's the damn truth! Lol
So you are pretty old and dont remember your childhood then? What kid dreams about slow and old looking bikes where there are way cooler bikes out thare, like sportbikes...
@@Pillokun Someone else mentioned the word dream and I was also taught to be respectful but I can see that you wasn't taught!!the same
@@alanmcclusky Respectful? I am just stating the obvious without even thinking that what I have said is disrespectful. Just saying it as it is.
Sheesh, guess UK is full of people that get easily offended by nothing in particular at all. So if somebody IRL does indeed say something upsetting you hide in your room for at least a month?
I am taught to be real, down to earth and not get upset by something I read on the internet, especially not when it was not even meant to be upsetting...
Absolutley love the new Standard. Good work HD.
Thank you for the review. Video was very entertaining. Keep up the great content.
Heavy breather, 2 into 1 exhaust. Soon as the warranty is out a zippers 124 kit.. lol
Nice to see another affordable standard. Chrome is good. Hope they sell.
Do you recommend it as a first beginner bike ?
@@JoeJoe-su9lj it wouldn't be a bad bike but I wouldn't recommend it purely because of how expensive it is I would recommend a used bike that you won't care if you drop and mess up
Dude going to look at it today!!!! Thanks for the awesome videos dude keep up the good work !!!
Great review! Nice to see the cast of characters you work with (sorry, haha) None of them were too happy about being on camera.
I like the bare bones set up. Great starting point.
I have an '07 Softail Standard (the last year offered in NA). The only 2 things i didn't like about mine was the 21" front wheel and the handle bars, looks like they changed that this time. Too bad they didn't add a duck-tail fender old style gas tank and forward pegs.
Your videos always make my day! Thanks,
I test rode one and absolutely loved it! Buying one for my son in a few weeks
YES!!! been waiting for this!
excellent...…...keep it simple.....less things to break...….
My softail was a blank canvas when I bought it and now with my understanding of the additional items that I wanted. My softail is absolutely amazing and perfect!!!! For me!!! Exactly what I wanted! So awsome!!! I love Harley!!!!
I bought my first Harley in 2013 (a FXDBA) and i can see myself adding a Softail Standard to the colection
Man I love HD but for some reason when I see this bike it reminds of a Honda Rebel. The canvas might be just a little too blank. I definitely wouldnt want that small tank.
It is the shape of the tank that makes it look vaguely Japanese.
Nice to see HD is finally listening to us.
Would it have been different enough, if it had come with a 21 inch front wheel?
High flow Air cleaner, two Bro’s 2 into 1 exhaust, and a lucky Daves seat! Thanks for the videos brother keep up the good work!
Jamie Morley and forward controls. I feel like I have my knees with my face when I’m on it.
Perfect blank canvas to start with. You could build yourself a pretty sweet bike for 20k
And sell it for less than $10k a few yrs down the rd unfortunately. Been there, done that on standards.
131 crate engine ;), and probably 16" apes... but I'm unfamiliar with the factory bars
They are 10 inch minis from the factory
@@Paniconthenet Size alone doesn't tell you how they feel in relation to the bike.
@@Dustin359 true. They are short. Why I changed mine to 13in
I dont think you can 131 a 107 unless they made an actual crate engine.
@@Ummbruuh They do.
Sold! It's for me... I like polished aluminum and black the best; chrome rust and pits and bubbles... With aluminum, you just re-polish it. Black paint on engine covers gets scratched when you do engine mods and repairs.
In the long run its much easier to maintain the finishes on the new Softail Standard and Softail Slim Models, in my opinion. Those are the two I'm interested in. And, at the $13,600.00 price point, the Softail Standard just became my 1st choice... Peace, Stiletto :-)
Good content love the review.
Change out the tank looks like the streetbob tank when they changed it it just doesn’t look good in my opinion
It actually the breakout tank
Well, either of you guys are wrong. Unless it’s the softail standard tank...
@@TheHarleyTech you are correct sir
The old FXST had a Ducktail rear fender. And the new one needs it also. OR don't name it
FXST
I have a 1999 FXST. Love it.
Oooo. I can see a test ride coming. Top stuff Mr Maxwell...
Hey guys, need some advise.. buying my first 2020 HD Softail Slim next week. I’m thinking of also buying the V&H twin slash 3” slip ons. Do I need a tune”stage1” or is it ok to just add the slip on? Need help
I was talking to salesman at the local dealer and he said he could sell more of these and other of the FX Softail models if they came with foward controls. Maybe HD should have made it that way.
I like it with mid-controls.
If you want one with forward controls, the dealership could do that.
Back in 2018 there was no kit. In this year p&a book there are 2 at $500&labor maybe $250-300 more. The sales guy was gone for a year so he thought it was closer to $2k to piece it together.
Just ordered mine, $600 extra installed at dealer.
HD wtf have u done to the softail image?
KostaAtlas replaced it with the dynas image. Like photoshop for middle schoolers.
I'd fix it to fit me.
I'd take a grinder lightly to those fins to get that highlight back. I don't like the purely black jugs.
Tubeless conversion of those rims.
Cobra Neighborhater Exhaust.
Saddlemen Tuck and Roll Step Up seat.
Find a good chrome air intake.
Swap the 5inch headlamp for the Softail Slim 7inch housing and put that new Adaptive LED headlamp in it.
I just put a set of the neighbor haters on my softail standard along with a quick release windshield and a 2 up seat and saddle bags , I love it but I think I want the single seat back . Lol
Hey man I have a 2019 street bob and I had a question for you I just installed passenger foot pegs but I’m going to remove stock exhaust and bracket to install short shots ware do the pegs relocate after I remove that any info would be great thanks man love the vids
Far cry different than my 2007 Softail standard. New one needs the bobtail fender imo.
Agreed and the 5 gallon tank
Can they please just make a street bob with a 4+ gallon tank?
Needs a 5 gallon or more. Anything less is a sportster tank.
@@PAULY-P Yeah, I agree. I like the street bob, but I'm on the fence about getting one because of the limited tank capacity. I'd get a lowrider, but hate the graphics on it and it also has too much chrome. Hard to get a simple bike that can do some good miles between gas stops it seems.
@@caffeine_strings5698
Try aiming for the wider forks over the narrow ones. You'll be amazed how much better the stability is. Like the WideGlide, FatBoy, Fatbob, Deluxe, etc. Deluxe has chrome though.... The Slim is like the StreetBob but with the wider front end and partially blacked out. Id go for that over StreetBob and it has the 5 gallon tank!! 130 front tire and 150 rear. Good luck!
@@PAULY-P I really want a M8 though. And I'm gonna have to go for one of the more "modestly" priced ones. Been saving up alot, but I'm not a big earner.
@@caffeine_strings5698
You'll have to shop around. I have a place near me called "Road Track & Trail and they have a 16' Blacked out Fatboy for only 8 or 9k with low miles. Nothing wrong with the M8s except the scissor gear sound they make. Sound more jap to me. The frames are 65% for stiff and have the rear mono shock and are overall a tad lighter than the twin cams. I just thought you would like the Slim if you like the streetbob. Otherwise get a nice 103 twin cam. They look good and have enough power. Also is a proven motor and sound better than the M8s. The 103 will be better for your wallet. Heck, i picked up an 09' StreetGlide last yr for $6800 out the door and only 29k miles. It does just fine for me. I whip it around as easily as my softails. Good luck on your search.
Just got one of these into the shop to be made "fast" as the customer put it. It's actually pretty badass once you beef the engine up a but, she ended up running an 11.2 on the quarter. I actually really like this bike.
Picking up mine on Saturday
Saw the 20 & just when down to the basement & hugged my 07 FXSTC...
Saw the 20 and went to my garage and hugged my 98 fxstc😁
Man, that's a nice mid-90s Honda VLX-600.
Which was a copy of a Sportster (not exact-and not as nice)!
Sir John just bought a 2019 FXDR here in the Philippines can i fit a 260 rear tire w/o any modification ? Thank you enjoy your vlogs, bvery informative.
I've came across this bike on Harley's website and fell in love with it. I want one! It's perfect for what I want.
I wanna see a CVO Road Glide Special Standard for under 25k.
Lol.
S Defiel I wanna see free Twinkies at Harley Davidson dealerships
Cvos are worth every penny they are very nice...
@@dennism103 Yes, they are _very_ nice, but one problem ... you can't customize them. :0
If you guys ever need another rider to help with these fill ups, I volunteer my services. 😂
Glad to see they are listening, I liked the Electra Glide Standard.
I have a 2003 anniversary edition standard and I love it I think it be a good everyday day bike and a good start out bike for a new rider
I also have a 2003 softail standard injected.
Just got done rebuilding the engine. Went up to 98ci, andrews 37b, port polished and cc the heads down to 72. CF pistons 9.5 to 1. Power commander, Baker dd6. Hydraulic clutch . Etc etc etc. Very quick and very fast.
But most of all, VERY HAPPY
It's hard for me to believe that they are calling it a Softail standard.
Standard sounds better than Basic.
HD has lost touch.
Prices on the new backers are Ludacris you can buy a brand new car AC power everything cheaper than a new Harley bagger
Great Vid Brother John
Bought the standard yesterday. Did 6 year screaming eagle warranty. Waiting on my extras to come in. Ordered a 300 watt soundbar, windshield, forward controls, old school tall backrest, gonna do a cam upgrade as well. Riding it bare till next month. I love the 107. Ive been riding 88TC's 5 speeds all my life. Better late than never is what I say.
I want it!! Needs forward controls and a mustang seat.
thats what they want fool
A 5 gallon tank ! That's the only thing keeping me from, buying a Street Bob, Fat Bob or now......Softail Standard .
Jeremee Gartner I agree. When the Dyna went away, the larger has tank went away as well. A flipping 3.5 gal tank ? ( I think ). What gives ?
It's 3.5. I have a fxbb and I can agree. It needs a bigger tank, if just for esthetics alone
@@Paniconthenet I also have an FXBB, goes 150 miles before reserve, that's plenty.
@@stephenfleming7056 mine's is stage 2 and I get about a hundred miles to a tank... I'm also always in the throttle. But mainly it would look bettef
Stephen Fleming yeah I have a ‘19 fxbb and the tank is plenty big
Hey John,I really like the softail standard, that’s how I like motorcycles,I might add a few extras but basically just leave it as is.👍😃
Been wanting a Harley for about 5 years now. I think this may be the one! Love the look of it, and the price.
This "entry level" Harley is a good idea. Just need to get younger people into the game. Great platform for also breaking in the younger crowd in the ways of customization to make a bike their own. Dodge had a thing awhile back where you built your vehicle online and they shipped it to the legal middleman where you could pay more. Neat concept.
Richard Alvis I agree that it’s a good idea ... but the price needs to be lower ... I’m not a Harley hater by any means but I was just at a “motorcycle mall” looking around and it’s amazing what you can get for $13,000 outside of Harley ...
Their big twin entry level bike needs to be under $12,000 to work in brining in the new younger crowd ...
Good analysis man
Hate that tank
Got one back in March. Loving this bike! Really fun through the twisties! So much more so than my street glide. I'll save that for my long distance rides. Anyway, first thing that had to GO on the Softail was the "dog bowl" air filter. Also needed a tad bit wider seat for my lady hips. But overall, a great addition to our stable.
Wouldn't mind giving that a test ride. What would I do to it: air cleaner (brushed aluminum cover or replacement) that black one to me looks off, small fairing and saddlebags.
Looks like a Street Bob not a Standard.
Right?! They need to bring back those solid mag rear wheels and traditional gas tanks!
@@timonstettler8403 Absolutely! and the rear fender.
This will probably cannibalize the Sportster, to those that are on the fence/new rider with a bike they’re gonna trade in anyway, and they”ll just get this softtail. 🤷♂️
I was thinking something similar; it's like a Sportster Plus
Dave Beals
I’m sure Harley “Hopes” this happens , since the Sportster will prob get replaced by the new water cooled Custom bike coming soon.
@@elithegreat6463 At the least, it would allow the MoCo to skinny down the Sportster line.
Nice adjustment to a softail, wouldn't be a bad lil scooter for around town or quick runs...🤙nice video man subscribed cant wait for more
I fell off my 2020 softball standard on a nasty dirty narrow country round and landed on my lift side on the bike which caused my gear shift stick to come loose now it's all flimsy. Any idea if it's a strip bolt or anything?
It's ugly. Looks nothing like the old Softail Standard. It has a Dyna Lowrider rear fender and an ugly gas tank.
Hi John, I have a 2006 softail deuce and my transmission is having some issues, when I shift up the gears the shifter stays up and I have to push it down before I shift to the next gear. Do you know what may be causing this problem. Thanks Robert
Slightly off topic question... I’ve got an Ultra Classic... frequently do 500 miles per day 2 up. I’ve got stock handlebars and they feel pretty good but I’ve seen other handlebars that look pretty cool. What is the truth about handlebar height Re: comfort? Thanks
7:36 “Then we turn left in a place where we are only supposed to turn right at” haha love it thank you for making me laugh bro I was having a shitty day up until this point.
Used that bike comparison last night. It is very helpful
well i have a 2003 heritage softail classic with the power commander i bought the bike from the originalowner with 27,414 miles on it for $7900, it has been garage kept since day one. the guy took real good care of it. the bike runs great and rides just as great. got forward controlls with 16 inch apes with 3 inch risers. and thunderhead 2 into 1 ehaust. with all the chrome extras. i love the bike and the way it handles. and sounds not to mention the looks and compliments... gladi bought the bike
This!!! This is what I've been wanting to see and I love the video of it. As someone who is obsessed with their FXST I wanted to see it first. While I am glad that Harley is listening it still tears my heart to see my beloved model become what I feel is comparable to an old sportster brand. Would be interested to see what it looks like with a 21" front wheel and forward controls. Maybe even an aftermarket dash panel for the tank to beef it up a bit and a duck tail.
New handles bars , new seat and new set of pipes !!!!🙏🙌
Finally one I like , cant wait,to get home and get mine
I have to 2018 street Bob blacked out love mine took off the tank emblems and USB box under tank and add my touch on it and for my longer rides have the The standard touring bike and road king great videos keep up the great work
@JohnMaxwell do you know if this is possible. Have a friend that just got the 2020 softail standard and he wants saddle bags for it. Harley dont make the brackets yet. Does the streetbob saddlebags brackets work on the softail standard
since it's a chain does this Harley mark it's spot? (i.e. is there an oiler that lubricates the chain while riding?)
Growing up in the 80s, this bike looks like the HD that I remember - Chrome and spokes. Love it. I'd change the Pipes to V&H, Air Cleaner, to polished alum, and hopefully you can still get a chrome rear fender brace, Pearl White tank and fenders. And lastly, a real speedo. Old eyes need analog...... Otherwise she looks mountable!
H D what is with the traditional engine roar ?
All I took away was your job is to ride different motorcycles back and forth . AWESOME 😎
I like that softail standard a lot! It reminds me of the FXDC which is a bike wanted to buy!
I just bought my 2020 street bob February 15 loving my street Bob
Stage 1 kit with heavy breather and Vance & Hines Pipes, saddle man renegade solo seat, Burleigh bars highball 16 inch, remove rear brake light , fit blinker / brake light kit. Sweet bar hopper in Australia for around $25k . Thanks Harley
