Dig Dug (c) 1982 Namco.
Dig Dug is a 1- or 2-player game with a color raster-scan video display. The screen shows a cutaway view of the land, most of which is below ground. The player controls the Dig Dug character who travels through and digs tunnels in the dirt. The object is for Dig Dug to destroy monsters by pumping them up or dropping rocks on them and to capture vegetables.

TRIVIA -
Introduced in April 1982 by Namco, Dig Dug was a shining addition to the golden age of video games. Dig Dug's charming world and innovative game play made it an instant classic.
SCORING -
Scoring in this game is relatively complicated due the dirt layer a monster is at and also how you kill said monster. In addition, you even get points for 'eating' dirt.
Over-inflating (bursting) monsters :
Layer 1 : 200 Points
Layer 2 : 300 Points
Layer 3 : 400 Points
Layer 4 : 500 Points
NOTE : If you over-inflate a Fygar horizontally, you will get double the listed points. This is due to the fact that you are risking your life dealing with Fygar's flame breath.
Dropping rocks on monsters :
1 Crushed : 1000 Points
2 Crushed : 2500 Points
3 Crushed : 4000 Points
4 Crushed : 6000 Points
5 Crushed : 8000 Points
6 Crushed : 10000 Points
7 Crushed : 12000 Points
8 Crushed : 15000 Points
You get points for collecting the prizes :
Round 1 - Carrot : 400 Points
Round 2 - Rutabaga : 600 Points
Round 3 - Mushroom : 800 Points
Rounds 4 & 5 - Cucumber : 1000 Points
Rounds 6 & 7 - Eggplant : 2000 Points
Rounds 8 & 9 - Bell Pepper : 3000 Points
Rounds 10 & 11 - Tomato : 4000 Points
Rounds 12 & 13 - Onion : 5000 Points
Rounds 14 & 15 - Watermelon : 6000 Points
Rounds 16 & 17 - Galaxian : 7000 Points
Round 18 onward - Pineapple : 8000 Points
When you are digging a new tunnel, you get 10 points per 5/8 inch dug.
TIPS AND TRICKS -
There are a total of 15 unique layouts in the game. After Round 15, layouts 12-15 repeat over and over in waves of four. There are patterns for these levels. Also, after Round 36, all of the enemies will speed up. The game does not award extra man after 900000 points; the score will simply flip over at 1000000. It is very easy to get a score of 999990 by eating dirt for ten points per section. Round 256 begins with a Pooka on top of Dig Dug. Since there is no way to escape, the game is basically over, no matter how many lives the player may have left.
Easter Egg :
1) Enter service mode.
2) Keep B1 pressed and enter the following sequence : Up(x6), Right(x3), Down(x4), Left(x8).
3) '(c) 1982 NAMCO LTD.' will appear on the screen.

“Go for the world record now!” The game is just mocking you at this point
Yep. Same goes to RALLY X.
But not Pacman or Galaxian.
He was actually petty close
if by close you mean 3 hundred thousand points away
25:53 15.000 points with a single rock.. I've count 8 kills with a single rock there! Perfect!
I bet I can do that in Dig Dug Arrangement too!
And it was on the 256th screen that Pooka decided to be the first to repeatedly abuse a spawn point.

2:35:03 here it comes. The killscreen
Due to 8 bit integer overflow, the level counter resets back to 0 after completing level 255. As a result, the enemy placed right on the player. Causes the player loses all of the remaining lives without doing anything

Aww I remember this game! This was my childhood. I've always loved puffing them up with air lmao.
Likewise!
Well played, I've been doing this wrong for years. I was happy just to get past level 40.
MrLee I agree and congrats!
When I was younger my high score I believe was level 48 I was on 1 life and I died instantly
Good god I’m happy just to get to level 25
You guys are legends! I've never reached round 10...

I might have seen the greatest Dig Dug player in the history of this game!
Oh wow being 25 and hearing the sound of this game brings me so much joy, I use to play against my grandma all the time to see who would get the highest score

Luckily, many of the arcade classics were only 8 bit. Otherwise we would have had to sit through 65535 levels before the kill screen.
BroqHans, the killscreen problem in DigDug is fully fixed in NMV3.
You sir are a digdug God.
2:34:00 - For anyone who’s interested, there’s a potential Dig Dug kill screen coming up…
(If you know, you know. 😏🤣)
I had a plug and play console when I was 8, and Dig Dug was my go-to game. So was Galaga. I thought that arcade machines are an interesting piece of history.
To think of all those quarters wasted as a kid playing this game wrong. Very good playing!!
Thanks to this video, was able to get my 5-man game high score from 150k to 434k in a couple of weeks. Nowhere near your level though, some of the moves you do are unreal.
Ah, there's nothing like looking up a YT video of your favorite arcade game as a kid and finding out that you thought you were the king of that game only to discover someone much better than you... ;-) There was an arcade across from the high school I went to and I played DigDug there a lot. Highest I ever got was about 2.5 million which took about 2 hours. I never finished it because 1) I didn't know it had an end! and 2)My bladder and wrist wouldn't hold out for 4 hours.
What I found so funny about this video was that it wasn't until about ~20 levels in that I realized that the fruit is an event triggered by dropping the second boulder! I thought it was a timed event! So here I am, 55 years old, and I just found out a game I played WAY too much as a kid had something very basic in it that I didn't even know! LOL! I guess because I wasn't playing the game for maximum points, like most people I played arcade games for maximum levels.
I played many hours in that game .You are the best .
All that work to be punked at the end. Brutal.
I remember playing this game years ago on a pac man machine
Come on everybody take a chance, we're going underground to do the Dig Dug dance!
mappy doesn't have a kill screen either, when you reach round 256 it just goes to round 1 and starts all the way over
even the difficulty resets when you get that far
2:26:46 I was wondering if that was possible to get all the enemies in the level with just 1 rock, great job!!! :)
You gotta time it just right
This is easier in Round 1.
And 15000 in one rock
You watched the entire thing 🙄
@@indiankid8601 I watched a few levels at the beginning, then a few in the middle, then jumped to the end, so I wouldn't have known unless this guy linked it for us (thank you!) From what I saw, it seemed 8000 was the max bonus for killing many at once... nope :)
It was a game that made a huge difference in skill.
I am NOT watching you go for the World Record, but I'm glad I watched it to the last round
I've been kinda confused. There's a jingle that speeds up the music when the last enemy is escaping the level. But there's also a second one that seems to happen when only two are left. What does this mean?
When there is a jingle when there are 2 (or more) left, it means that they are speeding up and more dangerous. When there is a jingle and there is 1 left, it means that he is about to escape.
I gotta get out of here
Yeah
I think the jingle only happens once per level. Either at a specified time determined by the level, or when there is only one left, whichever comes first.
Childhood memories this game alone is a special place to my heart i made it to level 100 before i stop playing dam dragons keep catching me on fire
256 isn't the hardest round. It's the last round, and impossible to get thru. Computer limitations of that time.
It wasn’t a computer limitation so much as a programming decision. They could have easily used a second byte to count more levels. But they either didn’t think people would play that long or didn’t care
Me watching level 1: GOD DAMN
Me also being happy passing level 7 until I see the thumbnail: ...
GOD PLAYER!

So. Here's a RUclips Wiki page for Dig Dug and Mr. Driller.
Dig Dug was released in 1982 by Namco (Atari helped too). It's also ported to a giant series of consoles, including ColecoVision, Atari 2600, and GB. Players play as Dig Dug (Taizo Hori) working to defeat the Pookas and Fygars living underground with his drill, harpoon, and pump.
17 years after Dig Dug's release came the game that was supposed to be Dig Dug 3.
Mr. Driller.
Players play as Susumu, 1 of Taizo's sons. Susumu was the only option in the first game. It's a puzzle game, where Susumu must drill his way to the bottom of the stage.
Susumu has a limited amount of air.
There are blue air capsules that refill 20% of Susumu's air. However, watch out for the Mud blocks (brown boxes with an X on them)! They subtract 20% of your air.
The game has plenty of sequels. Mr. Driller: Drill Land has been ported to Switch, from Gamecube, last year with higher quality and subtitles for many languages in options.
Dig Dug's 1st sequel, Dig Dug II (Surprised you haven't stopped reading.)
Dig Dug has an underrated sequel released in 1985.
Actually I'll do more on this later, my phone is going to die. I'll be back in a bit.
Alright, I'm back and ready to continue in here since idk how to edit.
Yeah yeah, maybe I should have done Dig Dug II before Mr. Driller. But I was more focused on making the article for Mr. Driller than Dig Dug's other sequels.
Dig Dug II is a pretty cool sequel to Dig Dug, honestly. It takes place on a series of islands in which the player must defeat the enemies. Sadly, no new enemies were added. Just Pookas and Fygars. However, Dig Dug has a new way of defeating the enemies.
On each stage are stakes that will break off the smaller area of the island if the stake cracks are connected. How to connect them? Well, just use your brain...and your drill! Using stakes is good for a perfect score record, which hasn't been done yet for Dig Dug II.
Stakes can also help get away from enemies. They can't cross cracks without ghosting through them.
I'm too lazy to continue now, when I get back I'll do Dig Dug Arrangement.
Feeling pretty lazy give me a bit more time :I
Alright I'm back and ready for more. Let's get started again.
The 3rd game in the Dig Dug series, Dig Dug Arrangement, which I'll call DDA for short.
DDA was a pretty good game if I do say so myself. The game gets a new simultaneous 2-player mode. Taizo gets a new buddy never reintroduced in the series. Everything also gets more detail.
DDA is a 50-stage game (Dig Dug being 255 playable ones and Dig Dug II having 70)in which Taizo and his buddy traverse through different worlds. (I love the music btw) And forgot to mention that Taizo's harpoon throw sprite has changed a bit.
Drop Rock on Enemies:
1 enemy: 1,000
2 enemies: 2,500
3 enemies: 4,000
4 enemies: 6,000
5 enemies: 8,000
6 enemies: 10,000
7 enemies: 12,000
8 enemies: 15,000
Pump enemies:
Pooka (for the color changing): 200, 300, 400, 500
Fygar: (for the color changing): 400, 600, 800, 1,000
1:28:11 15000 Points
This game brings me back to a time when I had almost no responsibility!

Me and my dad used to play this game ALL THE TIME. Shame i haven't been able to find it again
It's 2021 man! Emulation is all the rage! You don't have to buy a stand up arcade replica, but you will need a real arcade joystick to pull off the fast pumping actions required.

When 920,000 points are scored, you're on "survival of the fittest" mode thereafter. You can score however many points you can without earning more lives. This game had 28 lives. The 256th is unbeatable! Is there any way to beat that level?! Can the game be beaten?!
You set a record for lives lost: 8 lives lost in 43 seconds! Unbelievable!
Some end-of-game anagrams: rage move, Moe Grave, gave more.

no. there's no ending
This is inspiring to watch. Wow.
I burned through tons of quarters on Dig Dug in 1982, at every place that had a machine. Finally in the fall at a 7-11, I played for over 24 hours on one quarter and the machine pixelated and would not turn back on after they had to unplug it. I felt like a “GOD” and had superstar like status. Was really good at Asteroids as well...miss those times being 18 and 19 years old 🤘🤘🤘
how did you play for over 24 hours on 1 quarter when the game ends after 255 levels? did you just run around with them chasing you for 24 hours, never completing levels?
@@josephlalock8378 I have no idea how I did but, I never made it to the kill level and didn’t even know that one existed…all I know is I played until the machine pixelated and never timed how long each level took. I guess I could have said I played for a long, long time for I didn’t use a stopwatch. Nobody made a video of it for the local news or the paper didn’t write a story. If I could go with Marty and Doc back to that date and time, I would use my cellphone and film the thing.
