I’m doing the same thing…24 channels of inserts…16 channels of summing. I never thought i’d get into hybrid mixing/mastering…but, here i am and loving every bit of it. Thx for the video.
I 100% believe the concept of analog in with great preamps, compressors, eq's, etc. I really feel if you get a great take on the way in (the most important part in my opinion) you can 100% mix and master in the box with phenomenal results. That studio setup you have now is just awesome!
Been looking for a way to set up outboard gear as inserts for ages, is there a way to set this up in Logic or do you have to use sends? Also love the paintbrush on the side, guessing that's for keeping dust off gear
Don't you mind the extra ad-da when you are using a chain of hardware inserts? wouldn't it be better to create patches in the patch bay and not through roundtrips of conversion? Thanks Andrew!
I don't mean to sound bad but you look knackered mate - don't forget to take time out dude, I know you work very hard! That aside, another great video. Peace
I am using a similar setup with a lot of 500 series but something (I think) is not right, why using two insert points for the hardware (you'll convert twice and twice delay compensation) ? Why not using your patchbay and wire the units through it ? so that way it's just one insert point, DA & AD once, delay compensation once... The only positive point is the recall, you don't have to write the patchbay wiring.
I am trying to figure out how your hardware is wired.. is all of your HW units dedicated to ProTools inserts? Are you using a patchbay to flip those inserts or are the hardware units hardwired to dedicated interface inputs?
Most times it’s in a patchbay so it can be routed during tracking and for inserts during mixing. If they are hardwired to an interface you lose flexibility during tracking.
I love outboard and hybrid set ups but now digital is getting so good it's almost indistinguishable between analog and digital. A lot of guys are going all ITB. Jeez even basic usb interfaces are sounding legit these days. Preamps IMO are very subtle. Sick set up though. I'm getting rid of more outboard gear then ever latley. Nice to just not have to mess with patches or inserts etc. even some of those tape emulations are getting scary close. Interesting time to be in this game. 5-10 grand can get you a legit sounding rig now. With drums the room is what I'd spend the most on. Rooms make the most difference.
You don't have issues with running multiple hardware inserts on a track rather than all through one patch on an insert? No latency issues running in and out?
Thought the same thing. Plus 2 rounds of AD conversion. There should be some latency. Would be best to use one insert in PT and patch from EQ straight to COMP.
This was my thought, I wouldn’t like the multiple stages of conversion .. I guess the advantages are recall and the ability to easily move EQ before or after compression
@@humbert702 Antelope conversion is incredible and very transparent. But I don't think my computer would be able to handle it at 88.2. I'd have to move down
Great video Andrew ❤ I’d love to see specifically the cable and signal routing that happens between the outboard gear and where you select it in the DAW 🙏🙏🙏 I understand selecting and labelling inserts in the DAW, but is the hardware routing all done through DB 25 patch bays or the Orion IO?
So when you do a real time “bounce” of the mix, does that capture the HW inserts as well or do you have to print the mix by re-routing the whole thing to another stereo track before bouncing? I have a similar work flow, but routing everything out to a summing mixer… so I have to print it all coming back in on another stereo track, which can get a little tricky with monitoring/PT Master Fader, etc….
As it is mostly analog I bet that you get less latency than with some digital plugins. You only have to deal with D/A and A/D conversion which is usually not an issue.
Great video! Any concerns about phase issues with hybrid mixing? Have you ever thought about a summing mixer? Just curious. 🙂 I have been running a hybrid setup and after I saw a video from Eric Valentine, I'm second guessing my setup. I purchased a cheap (older) D-Box and will be trying summing.
Not since switching to this interface. If the interface you're using doesn't have automatic delay compensation you can not only introduce phase but weird latency issues. I used to have the Burl B32. I may get something down the line - but for now things are good!
@@itsstudiotime Thank you for the reply sir! Interesting that you are controlling delay compensation with the interface. I did not know this was possible. For years I had been controlling delay compensation within the DAW (i.e. mixbus32C).
Subtle but there are vintage vibes happening with physical units. I’m not confident enough to use hardware, I guess using real potentiometers as opposed to digital recalled ones requires experience and utmost confidence before moving onto the next project. Kindest regards from London 🇬🇧 UK
Sorry but, I haven't watched your content lately. I'm curious, what happened to the mixing console you had before? I know you moved recently but don't know if you got rid of it before moving.
Hey everybody, I have a question on processing your mix bus or master bus. Would you rather use hardware inserts or output your bus and run through all your hardware pieces and then go back into your DAW?
@@Fastvoice surely it takes time to route a signal out of a DAW, through a bit of analogue gear and then back into a DAW, no? Where is that compensated for?
This video doesn't show people how you have your Outboard Gear Physically Connected to your Daw. You're just showing people how and when you choose to Inject a Piece of Outboard Gear into your session. So maybe you should change the name of this video. Nice studio though.

Thanks!

That studio room looks great.

much nicer than the attic
Looking and sounding great over there.
O really love hybrid mixing but the first time i needed to make a recall was a nightmare, so now i print all busses before finish the mix.
Nice video! How do you "print" the outboard hardware effects in the final mix?

Lovin the new studio vibes. Big difference in size that's for sure. Been debating on the Burl B2 Bomber ADC.. Any experience with that unit?
I'm not very familiar with outboard gear but how does latency work with this kind of setup?

The SPL really bring the drum to life, the bypass button is forbidden
Nice setup. Are you using a patch bay at all for the mixing?
Yes, the setup is 64 inputs and outputs via my galaxy 32. I'm using (4) 96 pt tt patch bays.
Do you feel its better then the trident board?

Ive always been curious how others handle latency issues and the complicated routing involved in hybrid sets
Drums sound great!
What hardware is being used for I/o? Multiple interfaces, adat expansion, etc?
Galaxy 32! That's all ya need but I use a ton of inputs so I'm expanding IO with a ferrofish A32 pro via MADI to the galaxy.
I like your Lewit mic. Those are trusty little things.
can you please tell how did you setup the analog gear to pro tools
What made you decide on using the Barefoot monitors?
Comparing them to the speakers and set up I previously used. Made the switch over a year ago. Love them.
Bruh your Barefoot monitors got swole between b-roll cuts.
They went through a training arc.
How do you design a hybrid set up without latency?
What Version of the Hardware SPL Transient Designer are you using ? cheers
Rack mounted SPL TD4 mkII

Nice

Does your Galaxy handle the delay calculations?
It does automatically, it rules
@@itsstudiotime INSANE! I love my Orion studios synergy. But will have to upgrade down the line. Going to beed a ton of more preamps! lol

Does this not introduce a load of latency? How do you get around it?
From where should the latency come from? It's analog gear and the D/A-A/D process is usually very fast.
@@Fastvoice surely it takes time to route a signal out of a DAW, through a bit of analogue gear and then back into a DAW, no? Where is that compensated for?
The galaxy interface has automatic delay compensation built in for hardware inserts.

No wa73s on drums. All API 3124s, bass di was wa73.
