We really have been in something of a turn-based Renaissance for the last few years and I am absolutely loving it! This list is just a reminder that I have so many games to look forward to
I was so scared the whole video that Chained Echoes would be left out. That game was just.. Such a journey. I wouldn't even say it's for us old gamers looking for nostalgia. I'd say its the perfect entry point for new gamers to get into Jrpgs. Great pacing, characters, story, combat, music. Everything is fantastic. Eddie marianukhra who made the soundtrack deserves a place among the giants of the industry and Mattias Linda deserves his own studio.
DQ11(pretty much the DQ franchise in general) and the Octopath series have really got me to just overgrinding in these games, and that's not a bad thing in my opinion. I may just play BF 2 again, just because it's so much fun to just pick up and play. Turned based RPGs are just that... Pick up and play. and I love that specific type of play for me.
DQ11 and octopath had me in the zen of grinding. Lots of fun to just chill in those games. I think the best thing though in DQ11 is it reminds you of what you need to do next so breaks from playing it are not punishing. I wouldn't mind seeing that in more games. Great LIST!
Seeing Elie on the thumbnail, I just wanted to say that I finished Trails to Azure earlier this afternoon. Zero and Azure are two of the best jrpgs I have ever played.
I recently bought romancing saga 3 on the switch and after playing for just a few hours completely fell in love with the game. In my mind it feels like ff4/6 meets dark souls and I love the innovative gameplay mixed with the lack of hand holding and the games willingness to let the player stray to locations they aren't ready for. I still haven't completed the game but i made sure to pick up saga frontier and scarlet grace before the sale ended. I feel like this series is criminally underrated and undiscussed in the west and would love to hear your thoughts on these games.
I love that you give an actual reason for adding more games to your Top 10 lists beyond "Because it's my list, so why not?" Hells yeah, David! More games equals for games for us to play! That's right!
Surprised at no Triangle Strategy. I am finally playing through it on Steam at the moment. Maybe a third of the way through the game at best, but I'm having fun with it.
Octopath Traveller is such a cool game. I've seen too many negative opinions about it (and also Bravely Default while we're at it) in regards to the writing/dialog among a few other things. Maybe it's kind of dumb to bring up but these kinds of unfounded remarks irritate me to no end! These games are SO. GOOD. Not once did I stop and think "wow this wasn't written well!" I think some people keep expecting more and more from games... like they hyper fixate on everything THEY THINK the game should be doing. These games are basically perfect. Sorry haters but no. Play something else
I love almost the entire list, especially Bravely Defalbut 2, which doesn't get the love it deserves, but also i would include two hidden gems, Child of Light and Cris Tales i can not stress enough how much i love the latter
Nice list, David. No surprises with DQ11. Been playing Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. Enjoying it a lot. One of the best turn-based games on PS1. It did get a remake on PSP but I wanted the PS1 version.
It feels really nice not having to screenshot multiple times on your list videos for once, I'm glad I either already own or have them currently ordered them on playasia for most of these. Beautiful list! My favorite turn based is, etrian odyssey. Always
Thanks so much for this list! The last 6 months or so, I have been on a turn-based run and I've been looking for any and every game possible. I'm about 60 hours into Bravely Default 2 and 80 hours into Octopath Traveler 2 and they are exceptional games. Sea of Stars was a huge surprise for me - I loved it! OT2 has a beautiful soundtrack - to the point where I think 5 of my 80 hours is just not touching the controller while i listen to the music lol I just got OT1 this weekend to start (when I finish the other one) and I'm going to try these other games as well!
I love my switch! Such a JRPG Juggernaut! Personally, can't go wrong with any of these in this list. I don't know if I have a favorite. There's just so many good ones
Excellent video! This makes me realize I should get around to trying out the Dragon Quest Monsters games. I love the whole main franchise, so I'd probably enjoy it.
I don't know if this counts. But I also add in the Mario + Rabbids games. An Tactical RPG/Strategy game with an XCom alike style with an crossover between Mario & the Rabbids seems ridiculous at first, but it actually works and they became some of the best Mario RPG'S we had in an long time. And with the remake of Super Mario RPG & The Thousand Year Door coming soon, Mario RPG'S have become pretty heavy on the Switch and I'm happy for that.
I just beat Zero/Azure, oh my gosh. Trails is now my favorite series. I’m pissed that Cold Steel 1 and 2 aren’t on Switch because now I have to wait til I’m home to play them 🙁
I always love to see people fall in love with Trails. It's my favorite series of all time and means a lot to me. Playing through each one, from Sky 1, through the following 9 games to Reverie is quite an experience. I almost feel like I know these characters in real life after the years I've played them and over 2200 hours between all entries. Having now beaten Zero and Azure, you're gonna be happy to see some events in Cold Steel III and IV.
I didn't remember how you felt about SMTV so nice to see it on the list I take it there was an unspoken rule of there being no 10+ year old ports since there was no FFIV/V/VI? Also I watched this vid and got no ads, but then I refreshed and started getting them. Maybe I clicked too early. lol
Grandia HD Remaster! Grandia 2 was probably the first jrpg that I bought in the early 2000's. I absolutely love this game. It has a great story, likeable characters and fun combat.
I got Chained Echoes on my emulator on my gaming phone. I got the demo of Sea of Stars and Dragon Quest XI S for my Switch. I had DQXI digitally for my Xbox One S but for some reason it doesn't recognize that I have the game so now when I can afford it, I'm get it for the Switch. I also got the demo for Ys IX, but unfortunately it only allows 10 mins of gamellay then cuts off, even if your in the options menu. 😫
Trails, obviously, plenty of lore, content to unearth, fun worlds to explore, and characters that will click with you. Personas 4 and 5. I know people are gonna say " But Persona 3 is da best!" Honestly, while I'm glad that 3 portable gives you the option to control your entire party, It's really showing its age in terms of the slice of life stuff, and 4 and 5 let you pick who you romance, which I'm glad about. Hopefully 3 Reload can live up to its hype. Dragon Quest XI S. Thankfully this version has more content, and it's a fun game to just pick up and easy to access Tokyo Mirage Sessions: A fun cute musical Fire Emblem and SMT crossover with the session system that's fun to play around with, and if you love music, then this game is for you SMT V: Beautiful post apocalyptic Tokyo, creative customization for your demons, and for yourself. Pokemon Scarlet: Fun world to explore based on Spain, past and future motif is interesting, as well as a customizable party for your leisure. Also, Sprigatitto's the cutest starter.
Don't bother getting Sessions on Switch. The Japanese version on Wii U is the only uncensored version plus Nintendo even changed dialogue to the point they altered the JAPANESE audio to match. -_-
Wow I actually do really love chained echoes but I didn’t except it so high. I beat most of the game but kinda got bored at the end. Trails just grabs me so much more. They are good tho
I don’t mean to be rude but I’m confused. When you mentioned the Persona series you said that the Switch has the Persona 3 Portable Remake and then showed footage of Persona 3 Reload which has not been announced for the Switch, just Xbox, Play and PC. The Switch has the Remaster of Persona 3 Portable but not Persona 3 Reload which will come out Next year
I couldn't say a better list imho. I would swap a few in order (just my prefs) but god damn that was almost perfect!! :) Thank you David for reminding me of some of my backlog lol. I would like to add to the honorable mentions Atelier Ryza 1-3, Pokemon (i know it gets hate), Monster Hunter Stories 2, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. But once again amazing list.
I love you and your channel. I share the same LOVE in my soul for your fav type of games. Mario RPG Remake coming soon! Then Chrono Trigger after!!! LETS GOOOOO!!!!!
Baten Kaitos not being English voiced is insane. I beat the game as a kid in English. This is a step backwards and almost a slap in the face of NA fans 😢 Ps. Game has the BEST plot twist of any RPG. When it was happening I thought I picked some kinda bad ending without knowing, it’s that good.
I wonder, have you played Monster Hunter Stories 2? it´s a turn based version of MH with rock paper scissors combat that focuses on story and characters instead of the grinding and action the series is known for, I´m almost finished and it was a blast to play, check it out
It came out a while ago, and it's a Wii U port, but I heartily recommend Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. The turn based combat it has is actually insanely satisfying, using elements from SMT (Weakness and opportunity focused), Final Fantasy X (swapping party members during gameplay and turn order) and a little bit from Fire Emblem in that team composition and equipment play a major deal, especially on harder difficulty and that it feels more strategic than most turn based JRPGs. It's underrated as heck. And of course, it's a unique premise in the JRPG space with the closest being Sakura Wars more than anything else. As front, you're a bunch JPOP stars but actually are also skilled in defeating demons that are invading Tokyo by using Personas in the form of Fire Emblem Characters (Chrom, Caeda, Cain, Tharja, etc.) Honestly, the game just has endless good vibes, it's so colourful and its production is some of the best on Switch with great environments and characters along with fabulous animation.
CS1 and CS2 aren't available in English on the Switch likely due to XSEED owning the English translation. NISA has handled the English releases since CS3 but it's currently on XSEED to get those Switch releases going. That or Falcom and NISA would have to negotiate to use XSEED's English translation.
There is something that makes me uncomfortable with the current jrpgs. Sometimes I just want to enjoy the classic turn-based system but almost all of them have very long cutscenes. If I get hooked on the story, I just want to know what's next and I want to move forward quickly. That's why I like Pokemon games more. I can't handle that duality of JRPGs.
Dragon Quest totally deserves the #1 spot. Such a great game On the opposite though, Bravely Default was a huge disappointment. Graphics, story, even the jobs and the gameplay... it was all super uninteresting and I regret buying that game. I expected better after playing the NDS games
I played DQ11 all the way but it always surprise me that people liked this game that much. For me, the story was too simplistic and stretched for too long, and I found the battle system too generic also. The graphics were amazing but for me the music was too repetitive. The game in general didn't click for me, but I understand that everybody seems to have a different experience with it.
@XVa-uj8m Exactly. I kinda prefer Dragon Quest over Final Fantasy. They always give out an not so heavy, yet solid storytellings/plot and the gameplay is simple & easy to understand, yet still provide strategy and comes with an fair challenge and not as piss easy as most Final Fantasy games have. That & Dragon Quest felt more of an grand adventure.
David100K! 3 games not even released yet on this list? Unless...you've already got review codes |-) If you do we need to talk about the weather sometime lol
I never enjoyed Persona as much as everyone else but I found the high school aspect more fun than the dungeon areas, dungeon crawlers in JRPGS is a huge turn off for me

I may just play BF 2 again, just because it's so much fun to just pick up and play. Turned based RPGs are just that... Pick up and play. and I love that specific type of play for me.
BF2?
You mean Bravely Default 2?
DQ11 and octopath had me in the zen of grinding. Lots of fun to just chill in those games. I think the best thing though in DQ11 is it reminds you of what you need to do next so breaks from playing it are not punishing. I wouldn't mind seeing that in more games. Great LIST!
I'm thinking of finally playing DQ11. Do you think the definitive version for battle turbo is worth the upgrade?
@@Kainteeka Yep
Seeing Elie on the thumbnail, I just wanted to say that I finished Trails to Azure earlier this afternoon. Zero and Azure are two of the best jrpgs I have ever played.

5:17 I love that tongue in cheek remark about Final Fantasy and could not agree more.
DQ XI is the best JRPG from the last decade hands down, period !
Such a gem. 👌
If you like old school dungeon crawlers then one can give Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection a try. Loved this series.
Octopath 1 and 2 are the best. Nothin else comes close.
Sea of Stars is special too.
Must plays for sure.
I love Octopath and Chained Echoes so much, I hope everyone plays them.
Thanks for the vid, David, good stuff.
Wow the timing of this, was just making a list of games I want on switch and this is my favorite genre!
I love that you give an actual reason for adding more games to your Top 10 lists beyond "Because it's my list, so why not?"
Hells yeah, David! More games equals for games for us to play! That's right!
I got Bravely Default 2 on Steam/PC, it was the best surprise awesome game play wise that I have played in a long time.
Surprised at no Triangle Strategy. I am finally playing through it on Steam at the moment. Maybe a third of the way through the game at best, but I'm having fun with it.
I'm super excited for thousand year door, i even played the first paper mario to prepare for it
Another BANGIN' list of games! I never get tired of turn-based RPG's, they're the absolute BEST! Love the list, David, great work~
Glad you like them!
I'm loving Dragon Quest 11 S. Just recruited the twin sisters. Sooooo Gooood!
Octopath Traveller is such a cool game. I've seen too many negative opinions about it (and also Bravely Default while we're at it) in regards to the writing/dialog among a few other things. I knew DQ11 would be your number 1 entry before watching this video. And I'm happy for this. ^^
This is a magnificent list filled with truly excellent games and I was pleased to see there was some love shown for SMT. 👍
Nice list, David. No surprises with DQ11. Been playing Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. Enjoying it a lot. One of the best turn-based games on PS1. It did get a remake on PSP but I wanted the PS1 version.
Kind of hope they remaster SMT Digital Devil Saga and DDS2.
Great upload. Love your music choices in the background of these uploads man!
It feels really nice not having to screenshot multiple times on your list videos for once, I'm glad I either already own or have them currently ordered them on playasia for most of these. Beautiful list!

The Pokemon games probably count here too! But I love your list. I have several of these on my ever-growing backlog. One day....
David loves Dragon Quest so much he included an unreleased game on a top 10 list
Great list but 1 gettin bumped when the suikoden remasters drop!!
What, no Monster Hunter Stories 2? That game is amazing, and that's coming from someone who just can't get into the mainline games. Trust me, I tried.
hahaha oh my god please reshoot that shirt promo. so awkward!
Turn based forever ❤ Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤
I couldn't said it better ! 🇧🇪
For me, I enjoy Triangle Strategy more than Octopath Traveller. Granted I haven't finished either games but it just seems to interest me more.
I love my switch! Such a JRPG Juggernaut! Personally, can't go wrong with any of these in this list. I don't know if I have a favorite. There's just so many good ones
i just got my hands on the baten kaitos remaster, you've made me excited to give it a whirl if i can ever find the time! thanks for the quality vids!!
Have fun, I know you’ll love them!
Is it Namco Bandai? Curious to know whether or not I'll have to import it to get the Japanese text.
Excellent video! This makes me realize I should get around to trying out the Dragon Quest Monsters games. I love the whole main franchise, so I'd probably enjoy it.

Yup!

What was the music in the intro/t shirt modelling? I recognise it from a game but can't put my finger on it! Ff8 maybe? But don't think so
Still waiting for baten kaitos from play Asia. Been almost a month now. Economy shipping was a poor choice 😂
Awesome video! If you like TTYD and Mario RPG, I'd recommend The Origami King too. It's very different but it's a masterpiece in my eyes!
i actually enjoy the school segments in persona games it gives you some nice downtime in between the dungeons.
Didn't know that baten kaito's got an hd remaster. Thanks for that info!

No, it wasn't. At least I didn't find any info about it. Angelyuekero has a point, that bit is misleading.
I don't know if it counts as more of an rpg or a vn but Death Mark and Spirit Hunter are my favorite Spooktober Switch excursions.

Ps. Game has the BEST plot twist of any RPG. When it was happening I thought I picked some kinda bad ending without knowing, it’s that good.
English voices are notoriously bad
Another day another great list nice vid man 👨 👌 😊
If SMT IV or SMT I & II (as a one game) would be remade on Switch, it will be definitely in TOP 3 or even TOP 1.
Solid list and one I love to see!!! Turn based and Switch = YES!!!
they're the best kind of RPGs and they can take them out of my cold dead hands! LOL
What’s better for rpg jrpg switch or ps5
That modeling in the beginning 🤣
#7 playing the demo on the switch. When I can afford it, I'm get the full game.
Hello david do you have a cheatsheet for players wanting to get into Trails?
Gatta agree with DQ11. It’s 10/10 🎉
That model walk lol.
"Top 10 games" he said, then gave us like 20 games 😁, great list btw
The only one that I disagree with on this list is Bravely Default 2, and I disagree with it heavily.
I'm surprised that the Front Mission 1st remake isn't on the list
I wonder, have you played Monster Hunter Stories 2? it´s a turn based version of MH with rock paper scissors combat that focuses on story and characters instead of the grinding and action the series is known for, I´m almost finished and it was a blast to play, check it out
Do you need to play the previous persona games to play them or are they their own standalone?
@tenbones545 thanks I'll do that. I've wanted to for a while but wasn't sure where to start or if id need to play all previous.
Except Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Persona 2 Eternal Punishment@@tenbones545
Damn I thought DQ dark prince was out already 🤣 two months away. I hope the bestiary is huuuge
I love my Switch and RPGS!!!!🎮👍☮️
Pretty much a perfect list.
Now for a new product idea essence of david 😉😉😉
Fully wholeheartedly agree with list and I own all of them apart from the unreleased ones 😊😊
Hey handsome! As a turn based rpg lover, I am here for this!! This list, (chefs kiss).
Hey, thanks!
I have half of these games already yay 🎉
Which trails games can i play on the switch without having played any of the other ones?
Trails from Zero should be the best starting point on Switch.
Fantastic list!
I love turn based jrpg too ❤
Love your shirt
You can play cold steel 1 and 2 am missing something?
Also any computer can emulate the sky trilogy
CS1 and CS2 aren't available in English on the Switch likely due to XSEED owning the English translation.

Tokyo mirage needs to be on this list too :(
I ordered my shirt, I am going to be the coolest person at work. 😆
I didn't understand the last horable mansion can someone who did tell me pls 😢
The last honorable mention was WrestleQuest.
