Solid list I'd like to include Final Fantasy XII, Atom RPG and Skyrim (of course) in there but its hard to pick any on the list out to take their place
Octopath Traveler, especially 2, changed me as a gamer. Ive never had a gaming experience like that. It was different than BotW, I dont know why, I cant really explain it, but the characters, voice acting, soundtrack... It just got me.
God, I LOVED Xenoblade 3... Never played one before Completely out of my comfort zone, but I ended up doing 200 hrs on it... And, yeah Mark, when I inevitably return to it I'll have to start all over again! SO complicated, but still approachable for noobs... a nice drip-feed of mechanics
If you loved 3, you should definitely go back and play 1 & 2 and then Future Redeemed! It is a big time commitment but if you love the world building and story of 3, 1 & 2 are even better in my opinion!
These are definitely some great picks. If I were limited to 5, I would have probably gone with The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection (IV, V, and VI are all masterpieces), Persona 4 Golden, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Octopath Traveler 2 and Unicorn Overlord. Sea of stars, Star Ocean 2 and Golden Sun would be an honorable mentions.
Nintendo Switch is the home for an ultimate selection of RPG's. Paper Mario TTYD remake is really fun that I'm happy to have this and Super Mario RPG remake in my collection and soon to get Mario & Luigi Brothership to be next on my list.
after 890+ hours in the Xeno series - Xenoblade 2 is my fave - but god I loved getting lost is all the worlds and lore - great picks on your games - I love hearing what JRPGs people love
XC2 is also my favourite of the series. I can see why some don't like it, however. It takes far too long to teach you all of the battle system, and the navigation in the game is absolutely horrible. I wasted so much time running into virtual dead ends because the compass directed me there.
I knew a guy that had...not even joking...over 2k hrs at least even every XC game. It's crazy how much time you could truly sink into any of them if you're really going for a true completionist experience
XC2 has the best character designs, but I am not at all a fan of the story and the poor QOL implementation. It felt like 30% of the game was spent in the menu levelling up Blades
Octopath traveler 2 and xenoblade chronicles 3 are the two best jrpgs on the switch I’m my personal opinion. Two game on the year contenders when they released I would say confidently
Incredible list; the Switch is an unbelievably good RPG machine, it's basically all I have on there for myself. DQ11 is my all-time favourite JRPG as well!
I had never played a JRPG in my life until 34 years old when I got Octopath 2. Now I’m a full blown addict, working my way through dragon quest 11 now. Never thought I’d play anything like these games, wish I had started sooner lol.
Almost done with Star Ocean 2 R and it’s one of my favorite games on the Switch. Also recently picked up Octopath Traveler 2, so can’t wait to play that next.
SMT V Vengeance is my favourite, for the reasons mentioned in this video. Anyone who wants a unique twist on the Pokemon experience and incredibly engaging gameplay mechanics owes it to themselves to try this fantastic game. Probably my favourite modern JRPG ever. Honourable mentions to Xenoblade 3 for its great characters and narrative, Triangle Strategy and Fire Emblem Three Houses. I really need to try Dragon Quest 11 one of these days.
Tales of Vesperia and Ys Lacrimosa of Dana would make my top 10 in place of paper mario and sea of stars. But other than that i think you guys nailed it
Chained Echoes, Three Houses, Octopath, DQ11, Live a Live, SO2, 13 Sentinels, Unicorn Overlord, Xenoblade series are highlights for me this generation. I have a sneaky feeling I'm going to add Triangle Strategy to this list.
Great picks for the list, imo. My top 10 of Switch JRPGs, in no particular order: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Dragon Quest XI S SMT V/Vengeance Fire Emblem: Three Houses Tales of Vesperia DE Xenoblade Chronicles DE TLoH: Trails Through Daybreak Ys VIII Octopath Traveler II Atelier Ryza
A good list, I have played most of these. I'd also suggest the Atelier Rise trilogy for something a little different as well though I haven't played the third one yet.
Noticed that during Dragon Quest 11 bit the game on top, dev studio and pricing was shown for Hellpoint. Might just be a hellpoint DLC for all i know lmao
still need to look into some of these, I really wanted to like chained Echoes, but man the difficulty spike I got during the fight followingthe scene shown at 13:46 and a few other nitpicks just killed my intrest
I made Fish, Chips and Mushy peas just to watch this video with. Brilliant that after how many years into the switches lifespan and *gulp* SwitchUps too that were still getting great content and more gold to add to the backlog😂 never stop guys ... See Yaaa!
XBC is probably my favorite remaster of all time. I already loved Xenoblade on the Wii, almost 100% , but I did the whole thing on the Switch. Too bad I didn't like 2 that much and didn't even bother with 3 ( because, being Xenoblade, it's a huge time sink)
IMO Persona 5 is at it's best on Switch. It looks gorgeous, runs super well and being a LOOOOONG game it's best played in portable mode. Also - Star Ocean - I woudn't recommend on Switch. In the latter part of the games loading times are long and there are TONS of them. It's really bad and I much better on other platforms:/
Mark. Is this your name sir? You missed out on a legendary game, it is critically acclaimed as one of the best FF of all time and one of the best Remasters of all time for a game but ALWAYS been completely forgotten that it is even ported to Nintendo Switch and how Incredible it loooks!!! It is: Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age You have to play it sir and if you would it would be on the list🔥😍
This isn’t to disparage anyone who likes Xenoblade, but I finally took the plunge into 3 and it was such a huge miss for me. Put in about 65 hours before realizing it wasn’t going to change my mind. Love the gameplay, but the characters and world were just…not it for me. It never gave me a real sense of place or story. Instead of getting swept up in an adventure, it always felt like I was just playing a videogame. But I felt the same way about both Octopath games so who knows, maybe I’m just jaded.
Whooo go RPGs! All of these games are amazing !I e been be as ting my back log and I haven't touched xeno blad cause I know that's gonna be a long one 😅
I don't have the biggest hands but there is something very uncomforable to me playing action/reaction games with such small controls handheld. I've been really wanting to play RPG's handheld instead so this list is great.
I have issues holding the switch as well, so I bought both Linyuvo and IINE controllers. They have bigger "joycon" options that are much more pleasant to hold and work perfectly on the switch, minus the amiibo reader
Just picked up Xenoblade 3 from Argos for £35 in a clearance sale and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance from Amazon for £34. Bargain. Cheers for the recommendations!
bravely default 2 is an excellent game up until the very last area, where it just gets incredibly grindy as you walk through 4 same looking confusing dungeons. that's when I dropped the game, its a shame because the rest was fantastic
I feel sorry for the Chained Echoes creator because he signed up with 1st Press Games to get a physical release for the game and they are a terrible company making constant excuses for the delays they always seem to have for all their titles.
For Xenoblade 1, glad you mentioned the attack system taking some getting used to. I was immediately turned off by it because the way they explained it in-game made no sense. Might give it another shot. I was not prepared for relying on NPC AI to actually time their goddamn attacks properly. Or the other way around. Something like that. It was infuriating.
I remember finding it hard to get used to on the Wii and having more joy when I played it on the 3DS. It's not ideal in how it's explained, though. Glen
I quit Sea of Stars due to the stupid ant type creatures that kept respawning. I tried everything but I got to a fight where I dropped down into a cave and there were 4 or so of them. I gave it an hour or so, tried looking up strategies, then in the end very calmly deleted the game. Shame, as up to that point the game seemed fun and well made, but those ants were just ridiculous.
I might got it wrong but rpg stands for role playing games. Most games that tend to have decision making and are story oriented around the character you play are rpg, this could include games like hades or crosscode. Would find it more appropriate if the title was called "turn based" rpg.
Man could yall just put the titles of the games in the chapter descriptions instead of trying to be cute? I don't wanna watch a whole video I wanna go play some games!
Sea of Stars is a no go for me. The combat is weak. The characterization is terrible. And Garl... may just be one of the most _insufferable_ characters I've ever encountered in an RPG.
Interesting how some of those felt boring and repetitive very fast: XC1 - linear story, boring battles, boring inventory system. I gave it tens of hours, read some guides (how to make it interesting) but no... DQ11s - again, linear story, so boring battles (no challenge). Luckily demo is so long that you can assess this before buying. Sea of Stars - that was biggest dissapoitment. I gave it tens of hours, tried to enjoy it. It became stale and repetitive. Then major plot change happen (first trip through stars) and that pissed me off. Many hours of more and more boring gameplay. The story change came too late. In oppose Chained Echoes did this well. That worked much better. But others seems interesting. I might try Bravely Default 2 and Trails. Each to his own taste ;)
Please, separate JRPGs from RPGs (western). The ones you mentioned have no moral choices, nor character customization, and they are far away from that good western stuff like Fallout, Pillars of Eternity, Kotor, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc...
Xenoblade 1 is an absolute masterpiece. Maybe one of the best rpg ever, if its not the best🙏🙏🙏 The 2nd is excellent... but i dont appreciate the 3 over rated🤢
I get your point, but literally any game where you play as someone other than your literal self can be considered a role playing game lol. That said, I'd argue that BotW and TotK definitely dip their toes into the RPG genre.
@travislea640 they use RPG elements, but are officially classed as Action Adventure games rather than RPG and therefore, for me at least, don't belong in a RPG list. Action adventure, sure. Open world games, sure, GOAT lists, more subjective to each person but again sure, but not RPG. Another example I could use is pretty much any COD game or Destiny for that matter. Both have on their online parts a leveling up system and upgrading like many RPGs and you play the role of said character, but they are FPS games.
@@perfectomega1 yeah, I'm not denying the inaccuracy of the label of RPG in the context of gaming genres, just that I get why the latter ones make the lists. I myself don't consider them in the same category, just something that I was militant about for a while and had a sudden epiphany lol
I finished xenoblade chronicles 3 and it's DLC last week, took me around 150 hours and I bloody loved it! Only issue now is i don't know what to tackle next, this list came at a great time!
Dont know if you can do emulation after I finished Xenoblade series I played Xenosaga for PS2 and Radiata Stories. On Switch though Tales of Vespiria and DQ11s are great JRPG stories. Happy gaming.
@endless7115 I finished the other games, loved the trilogy, only one I haven't managed to play was xenoblade chronicles x! Hope it gets a switch release one day.
Go with legend of heroes zero and azure on the switch next if you want another one of those games that really leave a mark on you. And plus, when you're done those you can go back and play the sky games on pc and then you have 5 other 3D games to play in the cold steel series and now the final arc, Daybreak (which was mentioned on here).
Would definitely add Neo World Ends With You and Monster Hunter Stories 2 to the list, or perhaps another video? Both can be found for cheap and provided me a lot of fun. Neo has one of the most customizable battle systems and it just oozes style. MHS2 in the meantime replaced Pokemon for me because it has a reasonable amount of monsters to choose from and they all feel distinct.
Hey SwitchUp Family - it's not easy to choose just FIVE games each - what would your top five be? Mark
6:48 - Dragon Quest 11 is Hellpoint? 😂
Persona 5
Persona 4
Persona 3
😂😂😂😂 No joke though
Solid list
I'd like to include Final Fantasy XII, Atom RPG and Skyrim (of course) in there but its hard to pick any on the list out to take their place
After john jones

Nintendo Switch is an RPG machine. So many incredibly great RPG to play!

If you loved 3, you should definitely go back and play 1 & 2 and then Future Redeemed! It is a big time commitment but if you love the world building and story of 3, 1 & 2 are even better in my opinion!
Yeah it's really a great game but man do these all need proper "previously on" style recaps whenever you play. Mark
Can't stand the accents.
Just ordered one
XC2 is my favorite one in the series. It almost makes me want to go inside the game and live there, it is that amazing
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Sea of Stars, Trials of Mana, Triangle Strategy, and Ys VIII
Finally starting to enjoy JRPGs after 40 years of gaming! Better late than never eh?
lol, DQ XI has a note about Hellpoint.
Octopath traveler 2 and xenoblade chronicles 3 are the two best jrpgs on the switch I’m my personal opinion. Two game on the year contenders when they released I would say confidently
Wow, loved the music choice in this video! Thanks for showing some love for Final Fantasy VIII, at least in the intro and outro 😊
My Switch top 5 (that I’ve played): 5. Triangle Strategy 4. Chained Echoes 3. Witcher III 2. Skyrim 1. Disco Elyseum
Triangle Strategy really surprised me. I love how the game was not full of good/bad choices but lots of morally grey ones. Very good games
Don't forget to include Golden Sun on NSO :)
Really?? Skyrim without MODs? LIKE REALLLYYY????
Really wish Trails in the Sky 1-3 would be ported to Switch
I think the subtlety of how the stories in Octopath 1 tie together was really cool
I honestly would add CrossCode in here as an honorable mention. That game was GOLDEN.
Playing that for the first time now, but on PS5. About 2 hours in and it’s a lot of fun so far.
Incredible list; the Switch is an unbelievably good RPG machine, it's basically all I have on there for myself. DQ11 is my all-time favourite JRPG as well!
A game that's in my top ten on the switch that ppl don't talk about is Battle Chasers nightwar.. Such an amazing RPG.
I had never played a JRPG in my life until 34 years old when I got Octopath 2. Now I’m a full blown addict, working my way through dragon quest 11 now. Never thought I’d play anything like these games, wish I had started sooner lol.
You have me interested in thst Star Ocean game the moment you said Star Trek
The fact that Chained Echoes was made by only one german guy makes this Game even more impressiv
Chained Echoes is amazing
Unicorn Overlord.
Too overrated in my opinion.. It barely has any story/depth tho the gameplay is good
Could we get a second list that doesn't have these top 10, maybe with some more lesser known titles.
Almost done with Star Ocean 2 R and it’s one of my favorite games on the Switch. Also recently picked up Octopath Traveler 2, so can’t wait to play that next.
Mine are nier automata, cross code, bayonetta 1 & 2.
My favorite would be the dlc story for xeno3. Future redeemed.

I started playing jrpgs on the super nintendo, Tales of Vesperia was the first one I played all the way thru on the 360
Where is the background theme music from?
It’s sublime!
Playing through Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance now after being on a Persona kick and Loving it!
Don’t forget about Cross Code.
Such a classic you're right. Mark

Xeno 1 my favorite rpg ❤ can’t wait to check on xeno 3

Can someone explain to me non-confrontationally what I missed regarding Xenoblade? I played for about 20 hours and just didn't... Like it.
Star Ocean and Xenoblade on my list.
Chained Echoes is almost as good as Sea of Stars. Highly recommended
Person 5 Royal
No baten kaitos 1 or 2?
Feels bad

Sea of stars was the kind of game that you waited for it to get good any moment! any moment.. any moment... 10 hours later... ditched it.
Do you need to know the story of bravely default 1 in order to start 2 or is it its own stor?
It is its own thing

Links to background music ??
zelda is an open world adventure/puzzle game.
Yess. DQ11 is here. I approve this list! 😆
Remember playing final fantasy 7 with my cousin Manolo, it was peak
SMTV over P5R? You serious? Don't get me wrong, original SMTV was good (didn't play Vengeance yet) but Persona 5 is great and superior in every way.
I was enjoying Xeno 3 until your party doubled. Way too much crap/clutter on the screen during fights.
I can't believe persona 5 royal isn't on here 😭
I might got it wrong but rpg stands for role playing games.
Most games that tend to have decision making and are story oriented around the character you play are rpg, this could include games like hades or crosscode.
Would find it more appropriate if the title was called "turn based" rpg.
Fairy fencer f Advent dark forces
Really underrated jrpg kind of a Hidden gem
Man could yall just put the titles of the games in the chapter descriptions instead of trying to be cute? I don't wanna watch a whole video I wanna go play some games!
