Getting a custom mix makes total sense for your nursey. Just the time alone that would be needed to mix 12 yards of materials to a high consistency makes it a nonstarter. What you're doing ensures your time is spent on what is most valuable for you.

Thanks Joanne. Vermiculite holds more moisture and nutrients. Some plants don't like the extra moisture held against their roots. I do use vermiculite for seed stratification.
Hi Adriana - I wait a couple of months because of the incorporated slow-release. The newly establishing roots don't need a lot of food. I keep an eye on the growth at around 6 to 8 weeks after planting to see if they need a little extra bump as liquid feed.
Happy new year to you as well. I don't include soil in the potting mix - I feel like I'd lose one of the key advantages: a mix that I can expect is free of soil-borne pathogens. If I were up-potting a mature plant into a large planter, I might be tempted to blend some natural soil in for weight and nutrient retention, but for young plants I wouldn't see the point.
For slow release in the potting soil, I use a 120 day coated fertilizer 16-10-10 or similar at a low/medium rate, then top up with liquid feed as needed.
For home gardeners, does Sumasgromedia has a minimum? This summer, we have purchased 4-5 bales of pro mix already, so would love to be able to buy in a more bulk form. do they come in any kind of containers if buying in bulk or just a big pile of dirt? Also, would you happen to know where we can purchase coarse perlite. We got a 110L bag of holiday brand, it's better than some but still lots of fine stuff, and the larger pieces are not super large...
We'll put, Jason. One comment I would make for those of us that rely on bagged mixes from gardening stores is that you get what you pay for... Premium potting mixes are just that. They are balanced and have multiple ingredients. Budget mixes are a waste of time, effort and money. 🤔
For our hot weather down here, I find the plants are doing poorly in clay pots and loose soil. We need clay soil and plastic pots for our hot weather. I propagated my first rose bush in a plastic cocoa container which frequently grew alge on top Who knew?

Yes. You might want to supplement with cal-mag and iron, as cocopeat tend to hold a bit tight to those nutrients.

thanks for good info as usual, for perennial seed starts do you use HP for potting into 4" pots then a sumas mix for gal. pots
Usually into plug trays with the Promix HP and then Sumas blend into the 4" (and upward)

Yes, when I've bought from Sumas it's been more in the 10-yard type range.
